3rd Gen Nissan Frontier Issues and Complaints - Should You Be Worried?

I'm in all the 3rd gen Frontier Facebook groups and forums and I see a lot of recurring issues/complaints popping up so I wanted to address them. I've had my truck for over a year now and so I'll share my experiences with the truck and my thoughts (having owned several Nissan trucks over the last 10 years or so) on whether they're actually anything to worry about or not.
If you're looking for thoughts/info on a specific issue, feel free to use the chapters to find what you want!

The Frontier is horrible off-road, that is the main problem with the truck. Even with a rear locker, the wheel braking to assist in difficult situation is horrible. And this is a fact, if you search online -- you will find this is the work midsize truck off-road out of all the major brand trucks available.

I bought a 2024 about a month ago. My complaint is always having to remember to push the auto stop-start button every time I fire it up. It has 4 doors so people expect the backseat to be useful if no they why even have those 2 extra door. It might not be as spacious as a previous gen tundra which is massive but if a backpack is wider than the seat then that’s probably what they are complaining about. Last time I checked one out I was able to fit 2 car seats back there but I am very short so my seats are closer to the front 🤷🏻‍♂️

Or maybe manufacturers can simply extend the cabins by 6 to 8 inches. However, they won't do that in order to milk ppl of all their money. The only other option is to buy a full-size pickup, but that costs an extra $15k to 20k. Also, most ppl dont need the power of a half-ton pickup anyways. A midsize truck with about 38" of rear legroom would make a lot of ppl happy.

  • @caddisguy
    @caddisguy2 күн бұрын

In Canada for 2022 and 2023 they made a PRO4X King Cab version with a 6ft bed. It is the same overall length as the Crew Cab + 5ft bed. The only sacrifice is the space in the back of the cab is smaller, but there is no offroad sacrifice as it has all the same approach and departure angles. I have this version and I love it. It's great for hauling lots of gear and plenty of room for my wife and I to sleep in the bed. The most common major issues I read about this truck is the e-locker switch goes faulty and grenades the rear diff and it's cheaper for Nissan to replace the entire rear end. This will be very pricy once warranties are up. Another one is the screen on the head unit delaminating and that will also be several thousand dollars once out of warranty (they replace the entire head unit) ... dash and cowl warping and paint peeling are a few other common issues.

Loved my loaded Pro-4X in Baja Storm. But I had trans issues and a rear diff whine. It was an 18mo lease, so I didn’t really care too much. But clunking shifts, delayed shifts and a CE light at 2k mi and trans valve body was replaced, but same behavior remained until lease end. Rear diff whine 40-45mph on decel. I never had that addressed. Absolutely loved this truck even with its little quirks/issues.

That's so strange. You're definitely not the first I've heard, but then I've had my truck for 17K miles and offroaded it for probably half of that time and no whine, no lights, no trans issues. But there must be some percentage that have the issues since I've seen it more than once. Thanks for sharing!

Awesome review The important thing about any steering configuration is THAT it steers. I have the Frontier S 4x4 & I LOVE IT. My advise for some would be, to get what you like and works for you - Me? I want light trails get through the snow functionality over gadgets, electronics and cup holders what I have is exactly what I want a mid-size 4x4 with a V-6. I love Toyota I own 2 a Sienna and Camry. I looked for a Tacoma 4x4 with a 6 cyl which are now unicorns for all intents and purposes. My only other choice would be a Ram which is just too much vehicle for my purposes. It all boils down to preferences and everyone has their very own -

I just bought a used 2023 Pro-4x 3 weeks ago. I took it out on the K-Trail in Oklahoma and the only issue I had is clearance. I see a lift in the future. Since I bought this strictly for trailing and camping, it's the right size for me. There are a couple of hills that I have to go up getting to our place in OK that every vehicle I have shoots up to 4000+ rpm if I have the cruise on so that's not a big deal. Since I have to drive 4 hours or more to get to any good trails I wanted something that felt as good on road as it does off, and gets good gas mileage. I am getting about the same mpg as I do in my modified Forester. I did consider an SV king cab but the price for a used base SV was only 2K less than the fully loaded Pro-4x I purchased.

I felt fancy springing for the Pro-4x until I looked at the difference in prices too. Seemed like a good deal for all the extra features of the Pro-4X plus then I didn't have to add or modify anything as it had everything I wanted.

I have a 2022 Pro-4X and I love it. I have 32K miles on it now, many of them driving from Phoenix, AZ to Homer, AK. And then from Homer, AK through Canada to Montana in January. I had a full U-Haul trailer the whole time both directions and was in 4 Hi the entire way through Canada in January on the Alcan since it's entirely snow and ice covered almost the entire way with plenty of mountain roads. This was right after the polar vortex when everything was around -20 F. It's been flawless. And those seats are magnificent. Also I'm 6"3' and I've never needed a telescopic steering wheel.

Like last weekends camping trip managed to shake loose a plastic channel insert where the rear window slides open. Hey, I’m sitting in Zambia right now watching your video. On my 2023 Pro 4x my issues are the drivers seat reclining back after turning the truck off, the radio randomly turning on and one of the USB-C stopped working. All these will be sorted out at the dealer when I return. I’ve had my truck since February and have put 17k miles on it. One trip I drove from Nashville TN to Santa Fe NM and back in 2 days. This is the most comfortable vehicle I’ve ever owned. I had zero aches and pains after driving all day. Zero problems with the truck and I averaged 21 mpg. I guess the only issue that I can’t fix is you really can’t do a proper U-turn because it doesn’t turn sharp enough. Love the truck and would buy again.

The update for the CC is awesome. Love my cruise now. Works like it should have from the beginning. The complaint I hear is camera resolution. Back up cam is fine, I don’t need it to be 4K. The front cam, would be nice if it were clearer. Fine for parking, but on the trails, sharper would be nice. But steep climbs where all you see is sky out the windshield, the cam does its job.

Took one for a test drive about two months ago, really liked it. I can't remember that I ever used hydraulic steering (oldest car I had was a 1996 Cavalier), but it only took a minute to get used to it; the weight threw me off because I've never had to put the gas down in my sedan as much as I did the Frontier. It should fit into the garage considering it's maybe a tad smaller than a 2014 Silverado, and we crammed that thing in there. It might take a minute to practice parking again but if people can do it in a full-size then I can do it in a midsize (would already have that down except the dealership has a small lot so I wasn't able to practice much). I hope to get a '22 model by the end of the year (I want to improve my credit a bit more for a better rate even though it's already good, because why not try for a better rate?). Given that the ones in my area are ~$40k, and my annual income can't easily cover that, I'm thinking to either get lucky on a sale or lease it and then finance later. I'm trying to be as smart as possible since I can't afford to screw this up, and hopefully once all is said and done I'll have a forever vehicle.

I have a 2012 sv king cab which i got because i needed a longer bed and i just swapped the axle for a m226 off a pro4x and wired up the locker and couldn't be happier i did all the work myself though i cant stand getting ripped off by shops.

You are a strong man. Of course the steering is just fine! I am also a strong man and loved my older Hardbody SEV6. My wife needs to be able to park the truck in tight quarters like Costco. We are in our 70s and are waiting for the 2025s to be released. Hydraulic steering is a deal breaker ever if we pay more for the Tacoma trd off road trim. Only if electric steering is available will we consider the Frontier top trim level.

I'm a big fan of the steering...as someone who has owned many trucks over the years, with both hydraulic and electric steering, I can tell you first hand that over assisted steering of either type is way worse than a slightly heavy feel. As far as having a manual...the only vehicles I've ever wanted a manual in were sports cars and muscle cars. Never once have I driven a manual 4x4 (I've owned a couple) and said to myself I was glad I had it instead of an auto. There might be 1 or 2 scenarios where having a manual in a truck is a benefit...the rest of the time it just makes drinking coffee on a cold morning a pain in the ass.

I liked many aspects of the Frontier, but it doesn't have enough ground clearance for off roading from the factory and I didn't want to put aftermarket suspension on a brand new truck. Now, I'm sure it's sufficient for maintained forest roads and I know Nissan claims 9.5 inches of clearance, but in reality, the Frontier has low "rocker clearance," esp compared to a TRD Off Road Tacoma or even 4Runner. I parked my old TRD Off Road Tacoma next to a Pro 4X Frontier at the dealer and the Tacoma's rocker looked 5-6 inches higher off the ground vs the Frontier

  • @AllThingsOverlanding

I actually agree with you here. Not sure if it's a packaging thing or a cost savings thing or what, but the fact that it's so low is a bit disappointing. I put on the All Dogs Offroad RC Killa kit which is basically a longer coil spring up front and an add a leaf in the rear and it was inexpensive and easy to install and picked up the truck 1.5-2" and with the addition of 33" tires, I'm up off the ground plenty for my needs. It does suck though that other trucks have so much more ground clearance, haha.

How about the driver power seat, does it move a little unintentionally? I’ve read on the internet it does. Nissan says it’s the way the driver gets out of the truck. Sounds like a design flaw that Nissan needs to fix. The seat is also 1-1/2 inches narrower to allow for a wider center console I’ve heard. The rear seat is a waste of space, rather have area for storage, wish it was an option. Thanks for the review, the SV fits me better since I’m not an off road driver.

An option would be to remove the backseat. In my 2nd gen Frontier, I did a 60% seat delete and built in a dual battery system and fridge slide back there and it was awesome. I don't have any issues with the seat but I've heard that. Might just be a thing you need to test getting in and out of the truck. If you're buying new and it's an issue (that isn't related to getting in and out) then it should be covered under warranty.

I have a 22 and the three things I've noticed: First, my infotainment sometimes freezes after startup. I'll drive for a few seconds and it locks up (I wonder if it is because it leaves WiFi range). It fixes itself but is strange. I also have the volume dial which must be broken and so far it's been a six months and Nissan doesn't know what they want to do about it. It's minor because I can just use the steering wheel but a little annoying. Second, the turn radius is a little poor and I find that parking is tough to get lined up. In my case, I wonder if it is just because the edges of the hood make it a little hard to see the lines relative to line up, but I also find that if you use the passengers mirror to line up that it will get you lined up wrong. I just use the camera to check and adjust it need be. I'm never not in the spot, just at an angle. Third, I found that when backing up at night the glare from the backup camera on the infotainment made it hard to really see the edge of the lights when backing up using the mirrors. I really had to dim the interior to its almost dimmest setting to help, and I added bright backup lights to my new offroad bumper to really allow me to see.
