2023 Lexus RZ 450e - Night Drive Review

#Lexus #RZ450e #lexuselectrified #direct4
I take the all-new 2024 Lexus RZ 450e #EV out for a spin at night. Here's the light show inside and out.
Driving Performance
The 71.4 kWh battery delivers on performance with a total system horsepower rating of 308 and a manufacturer-estimated 0-60 acceleration time of 5.0 seconds. It has an EPA-estimated range rating of up to 220 miles when equipped with 18” wheels and an EPA-estimated MPGe rating of 115/98/107 (city/highway/combined). When utilizing 20” wheels, the RZ has an EPA-estimated MPGe of 102/87/95 with an EPA-estimated range of up to 196 miles.
RZ 450e utilizes DIRECT4, an all-wheel drive system first introduced with the 2023 Lexus RX, which features a rear eAxle coupled with the engine and front motor. RZ’s DIRECT4 system utilizes two high-output, high-torque eAxle units that each drive a wheel set, one in the front (150-kW) and the other at the rear (80-kW). Three-point eAxle motor mounts, each using a lightweight aluminum bracket, are placed symmetrically on each side to counterbalance the eAxle’s torque.
The DIRECT4 system works to optimize RZ’s drive force, traction, and posture control (e.g., pitch and dive) in accordance with driving conditions and the load carried by each wheel. DIRECT4’s front-to-rear torque distribution has a maximum range of 100:0 to 0:100, depending on the driving situation.
Also lending to the RZ’s drive performance is the front MacPherson strut type suspension and rear trailing arm multi-link configuration with both specifically tuned and located to enhance handling balance, roll posture, and ride comfort.
At the rear, Frequency Reactive Dampers (FRD) are outfitted to the RZ’s suspension, altering the dampening force on the extension stroke in response to road surface frequency input. The FRD works to provide a high level of handling stability and helps to achieve a comfortable ride. With FRD and e-TNGA, key Lexus Driving Signature traits such as the precise control of sprung weight, along with natural posture changes, a tactile steering feel and the linear responses of steering, braking and acceleration operations are enabled.
Braking and Steering
Lexus Driving Signature is also reflected in the new Active Hydraulic Booster-G (AHB-G) braking system that works with the DIRECT4 system and RZ’s regenerative motor capability to reduce vehicle speed while helping to improve vehicle posture. With a new Vehicle Stability Control actuator and on-demand pressurizing system using a high-performance pump motor, this braking system provides a natural and responsive brake pedal feel. The front-to-rear brake force distribution is controlled by independent pressure regulation, contributing to a comfortable drive and stable vehicle composure while braking. Furthermore, ergonomic brake pedal pads are used for easy pedal changes and pedal depression.
In addition, an all-new Vehicle Braking Posture Control program adjusts front-to-rear brake force distribution according to a driver’s braking input as well as the suspension’s vertical inputs. This aims to improve handling and body posture while braking and turning.
A standard rack assist-type Electric Power Steering (EPS) system reduces the amount of steering input needed by utilizing a new motor and reduction gear setup that is installed parallel to the steering box. Moreover, a Motor Control Unit (MCU) with an integrated motor and motor current control ECU, reduces the EPS’ size footprint and minimizes operational noise.

Like all lexus vehicles, looks more amazing at night than the day. Thanks for doing a night review on this one!!

Honestly I find the ambient lighting even in luxury Japanese cars to be quite disappointing compared to what I’ve seen in mainstream European or Korean rivals like Skodas/VWs or Kias/Hyundais. The exterior lighting is cool and all but at the end of the day you’re gonna be sitting inside the car at night so they should focus on that a bit.
Very cool, a true Knight rider. just an awesome machine for cruising the night and so sleek and so cool for lots of fun 👍

Man. The battery tech did the designers so dirty. Such a beautiful car. Should have gotten a 270 mile AWD model and a 300 mile single motor model.
Lexus please bring an EV like this with 300 miles range. I will be the 1st one in line with my check book.

Hi Kirk, Your Lexus salesmanship definitely is phenomenal and getting the information through to the client, customer subscriber, etc. these videos are fantastic !!🇺🇸🇯🇵💙🤍❤️✈️🙏👍🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛🐕😇🌎
I testdrove one the other day, gosh I am in love. Absolutely a stunning looking vehicle. Yeah, the range is not the best but I think I'm going to take the leap. Lexus is even offering 30 days of FREE loaners for when I decide on a road trip so I'll just leave the RZ at the dealership. They have lease specials right now too so they are trying to move them. Great video thank you for capturing the night experience.
Love to see RZ with long range option.
Love those night time reviews and drives especially when its a Lexus drive.
Excellent review. I love love love the RZ.
Love these..thanks Kirk.
I want one
Good point on the lights. Could be intentional to preserve energy
I didnt even realize I wasnt subscribed to you till right now😂 Ive been watching for a long time too
It’s so dope at night. I like the Nike headlights.
The dealer should be able to disable the reverse beep. I had them do that on my third gen Prius.
The look of that fascia has definitely grown on me a lot. The rest is perfection. An exceptional vehicle I would be proud to own.
Good vid 👍Just to point out, there a double down arrow in the corner of the map display, tap that and it expands the map and removes the top row of climate controls (well, there is in my NX350h, I presume it’s the same in the RZ).

Excellent
It looks awesome
Thank you for this review! I bought the Luxury edition of this car a couple of months ago and absolutely LOVE it. I spend 98% of my time driving around town and only have to charge it about once a week. It is so much fun to drive that I look for excuses to go out. Once you own an electric vehicle, it is very hard to go back to gas. Now when I drive a gas car, it feels loud and sluggish. With that said, it is still nice that my wife has the RX350 we can take for longer road trips. We will need that in three years once the free loaners from the Lexus Reserve program run out.
Nice looking car, i like that lighted Logo. The interior is so much nicer compared to Tesla.
How do you get the front logo illuminate?
Just love it…
That reverse gear beep is to let driver know that you are in reverse, as the shifter gets back to its original position after shifting into gear, if the beep is not there you won't know what gear you are in, unless you look into the instrument cluster screen for gear position, this beep once saved me, almost pressed gas going into reverse, but in instant moment I realized I'm in reverse, so yeah that beep does not annoy me
Does it have creep mode?
may i ask Kirk, what camera and lens combo are you using?

The headlights look a lot like the ones on the IS.

Great question! I hope soon
I can see it makes its way to the all new LS that’s due to come in either 24 or 25
I truly think the RZ is one of the best EV's with the major downfall of having poor range and a slow DC charging speed. I really hope the next gen RZ (if it happens) is a lot more competitive in those regards.

Well, the quicker the battery charged, the quicker it’s degraded ( battery lose its hold charged). Maybe after 4 years, this lexus can go more range than any other EV on the market due to the fact other EV over exaggerates their ranges like Tesla. After 5 years people have to spend almost $25000 for new battery.

@@leonchen89if you want an ev with 15 years battery warranty yes, you cann't charge at high speed.... . The range is sufficient and this RZ will have some updates as well for 2024, better range and charging promised.

What's the range in km ❓‼️
The front logo looks great illuminated but I don't think you get it in the UK not sure why not
It needs solid state batteries for 500 mile range
can you turn off the illuminated badge with headlight still on?

I don't think so
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
That illuminated logo reminds me of Apple
All it needs is more range, and it will be the best.
I had an opportunity to drive an RZ450. It is a more beautiful and sleek design than the photos and videos I've seen before. Compared to the Tesla Model Y, some fantastic computer functions and one pedal driving are missing. But luxury ride quality, cabin noise level, attention to detail, and fit and finish are far superior to Y. In conclusion, I would choose Model Y. RZ has no glove box, not enough storage room, and one colossal disappointment is the short driving range. I wish the Lexus built Model Y in Japan. Imagine that the Lexus Model Y would dominate the EV market globally.
The charge lid looks like an after thought. Otherwise it looks sharp.
