    I've now tested the Honda, Toyota, Tucson, and Sportage hybrids. All seem to drive acceptably but I really need some more drive time once I downselect further. Some comments that may help others: Honda - good availability at least in Cincinnati, came with sunroof, standard I believe; no spare tire or storage under rear floor which cannot be raised, rear seat does not lay flat which makes packing for bigger trips more difficult. Tucson I am 6 ft even and could not adjust rear view mirror properly to see out the back hatch. This it is out of the running. Sportage - base LX seats, lack lumbar support or adjustment and are uncomfortable for anything other than short trips, so the EX is a must for me but also increases price. Mirror was fine on the LX, I will need to check EX which has a different seat, possibly mirror. Alex has key start, EX push button start which is kind of weird that they're different. RAV4: this was my first test drive so I have to check things again. Everything seemed fine but appearances were a bit mediocre compared to the others. However, a proven track record.

    I can only choose between the Sportage or Tucson (RAV4 not available here) but the PHEV's both have terrible delivery times... 1,5 years :(. But this is the story with nearly all electric or semi-electric vehicles these days. Companies and governments are pushing us towards electric, but you simply can't get your hands on one. I think the Sportage looks better on the outside than the Tucson though so that would be my choice.

    The new Smartstream engines range from 1.0 to 2.5 liters so 2.0 is definitely included. This includes Kona from 2020 above and Sonata from 2019 and above. They replaced the troublesome Nu and Theta engines. They also replaced the Kappa and Gamma engines, which were 1.6 liter and below, even though these smaller engines are known to be reliable. If there is any concern is that these engines are still new in their product cycle and has not developed a record of anything yet. However this can be covered by a long powertrain warranty.

    With those extra batteries in the PHEV it's not possible for it to have the exact same fuel economy when performing as a normal hybrid. That's a lot of extra weight that will make the fuel efficiency worse.

  • @Snerdles

    @Snerdles

    Жыл бұрын

    That's only true for very long trips. For example, if the hybrid gets 40mpg and the PHEV gets the first 30 miles with no gas and gets 38MPG then you'd have to go over 600 miles before the hybrid comes out ahead (with zero charging, about 630 miles is the crossover point).

  • @peterlancucki4928

    @peterlancucki4928

    To your point, that is correct. The PHEV is actually 35 mpg on hybrid mode, (in ideal conditions). But if you want something that does cheap as chips for your short commutes and can go the distance for long haul 150mile journeys, and a little bit of AWD for driving through winery dirt paths, (not roads I stress), it’s a solid car. I will say this too. Once you get rid of the kids seats, pull the rear seats down and adjust everything properly, you can fit about 40 odd cases of wine and deliver them in the cabin area. I was shocked what I could do with the space when I first tried to really test it.

    @@carhelpcorner Thanks for replying 😀 But that’s the thing though. When the battery is depleted it’s dead weight therefore cannot contribute to the car’s displacement. The battery and electric motor on the 450h is bigger than the one on my 350h so the fuel economy when the battery is depleted is 7.2l/100km average vs the 6l/100km average one the 350h. That’s why this makes no sense to me. Maybe the Kia rep didn’t have the right numbers who knows. Unless, the battery is never fully depleted which could make sense sunset unlike Toyota/Lexus the Kia can’t go 50 miles on battery alone.

    J.D. Power, one of the most reputable sources for rating reliability, has ranked Kia as its number 3 this year, placing it ahead of Honda and Toyota. Additionally, the Sportage has been rated as number 1. While individual car reviews such as this one reflect personal opinions, J.D. Power's ratings are based on data collected from thousands of consumers, ensuring objectivity and no affiliation with the business sector. Kia and Hyeudai are already passing Toyota and Honda, in many aspects. They now compete with german cars.

  • @carhelpcorner

    J.D. Power only looks at very short term reliability data which is useless. If you look at sources such as CR, CarEdge, ISeeCars, they look at long term data over 5-10 years. Here Kia performs far worse, which most reputable mechanics would confirm.

  • @lorkaaaaaaaaa

    @lorkaaaaaaaaa

    Over-generalization of J.D. Power: You mention that "J.D. Power only looks at very short term reliability data which is useless." I find this to be an overly generalized statement. Short-term reliability might not serve the needs of those looking for long-term data, but to categorically dismiss it as "useless" seems unfair. Some consumers are keen on knowing how a car will perform in its initial years, especially if they have plans to change or upgrade within that timeframe. Lumping Diverse Sources Together: You've grouped CR (Consumer Reports), CarEdge, and ISeeCars as sources that focus on long-term data. While that might be true to an extent, it's essential to acknowledge that each of these platforms has its unique methodologies and criteria. We can't assume they all come to the same conclusions or offer equally reliable insights. Broad Statements about Kia: When you say, "Here Kia performs far worse," I can't help but ask for specifics. Which Kia models are you referring to? From which years? It's crucial to provide context rather than making blanket statements. Citing Unspecified Authorities: Your claim that "most reputable mechanics would confirm" Kia's purportedly subpar performance sounds like an appeal to authority. Without providing sources or citing specific mechanics' views, it's hard for me to take this claim at face value. Mechanics, like all professionals, will have varied opinions based on their experiences. Constructive Feedback is Key: Your statement criticizes without offering alternatives or suggestions. If you believe J.D. Power's methods are lacking, what improvements would you propose? If Kia's performance isn't up to mark, what should they focus on, in your opinion? Korean Car Bias: I've noticed there's been a consistent narrative surrounding Korean cars in your reviews. This obvious bias can be observed by anyone. Such a predisposition affects the objectivity of your assessments. Kia Sportage's Reliability: Speaking of specifics, Consumer Reports, which you referenced, actually rates the Kia Sportage as quite reliable. They say it is not just a sporty car as they claim it. Nowdays, with proper maintenance, any car can go around 200k miles@@carhelpcorner

More of an EV experience than other hybrids, great economy, no plug in needed, no range anxiety, no heavy batteries to lug around with the rare earth metals. A great EV stepping stone until the future generation of batteries with better range, smaller production material footprint and overall efficiency. Here in Australia it will have strong appeal.

The volt is a big battery so you have the option of dealer new or second hand from a car wrecker. The best option in my opinion is find a specialist battery recondition business trained technicians will go through you car battery and charging system to replace the faulty parts. I could settle for the vesta blue and black interior for the sx prestige but dealerships dont have them and then with the rav 4 hybrid I was thinking of getting the xle premium but they have them in the colors I dont really want so I dont know what to actually do. The rav 4 is supposed to be more reliable but the sportage looks better and has more room and technology. I dont want to settle but I dont want to make a bad decision also. All the reviews say pick the sportage eventhough it gets 2mpg less than the rav 4 and it does have more hp and it has less fuel capacity.

    I am right there with you. I have a deposit on the Vesta Blue/Grey interior. Its gorgeous. I fell in love. But am skiddish like you. I am easy to scare. If 3 of 100 people say BEWARE, I cannot unring the bell. Fear of the entire car or all the electronics failing. Not sure what I will do. Looking j to Rav4 and even the new CRV. But they would probably cost close to $10K more to get what I want. Heated leather seats, Panoramic moon roof, blue exterior light interior. Also, how much will I save on gas? @@jherstein well I live in southern California so I cant put a deposit it's what ever the dealership gets. Like I was got get the ex premium package and the cruise control doesn't bother me because normal cars dont have where the car drives it self it was it not having memory seats or the blind spot system in the gauge cluster and it's a different cluster on the ex model those are my disappointments. The ventilated seats I used on the sx prestige was very nice. If you get the xle premium rav 4 hybrid you get heat seats and steering wheel with the weather package and you get memory seats and a sun roof no panoramic unless you get the top trim just it looks basic which Toyota makes regular vehicles that are reliable so cant really be picky and the hybrid xle premium is priced right around the sportage ex.

Plus I find it weird that they have the same gray seats in the gas version with ventilated seats so maybe the service department could switch out the seats with them since it's the same seats. Plus they just give us carpet and not weather floor mats. Toyota gives you all that with the weather package they even give you mudguards. The Toyota sales person really wants to sell me a rav4 hybrid but I dont see myself in a gray car or I would have got the sportage in the shadow gray matte color its looked cool with the blacked out trim but I dont want people to think I'm a raiders fan.

    Toyotas in the 80s and 90s were great with less electronics... I've owned two Toyotas and I've had transmission oil leaks. My Honda Civic coupe LX was reliable but way underpowered and boring to drive. My mom's '95 corolla was a THREE speed auto..simply awful experience. You know Toyotas recalled well over 10 million vehicles for "floor mats and stuck accelerators" right? Today, Hyundai/Kia/Genesis has the advantage for exterior styling, interior styling, tech, handling / ride (in this compact SUV class) and warranty. My guess is that reliability is probably very similar now (Note: Toyota and Hondas are no where near where they used to be...but their reputation is solid). The industry, including Honda and Toyotas have moved to small displacement engines with turbos. Styling is subjective but definitely prefer the exterior / interior of the Hyundai and Kia over the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV...
