I would buy a CX 90 just for the Inline 6. I'm sick of drive trains out repairs, to replace 1/2 a turbo that no one can even get too! I just wish Honda would step up, and use their marine V8 in everything they sell here. I got rid of my Ridgeline because, where there used to be power, is now 2,000lbs of safety, and computers that turned a great small truck into a slug. I replaced it with a 2018 V8 Toyota Land Cruiser, that still has balls. I'm rebuilding an aluminum body 2005 Disco, with a 425 hp V8 Mustang drive train. I'm sick of my cars rusting away on salty Pa. Highways!

Motor Trend its not exactly a fair situation you placed the CX90 in. Mazda is trying to focus on entry level luxury, not on utilitarian commuter stuff. You even said it in the video! So, a fairer comparison would be with an MDX or XC 90 (those names are really close!😂)

The whole review points to Mazda being the winner until the moment he's gives it to Honda. Just because the Pilot a bit more utilitarian. As if the CX-90 can't fit all 5 of your kids and their drinks. It can, so why not go with the car that makes you feel excited about?

I own the 23 honda pilot. My friend owns the cx90. They are both good for nearly the same reasons, just comes down to taste and how you use it. This guy literally never really pointed out the main reasons you buy these things. I didn't buy it to "look luxury". Or to drive like a sports car. Or to feel like I'm in the future of tech. I bought for functionality, practicality, some looks, and for the ivtm-4 all wheel drive which he never even mentioned. Bogus review, do not use this to determine what you want. Go test drive them. Oh and bonus, I drove it on some pretty gnarly trails in goblin Valley utah and it exceeded my expectations. Ground clearance was admittedly an issue, but picking good lines cleared up most limitations.

The Mazda may lack slightly on the functionality front, but it is much a better vehicle on the whole. There's a lot to be said for a vehicle that is fun and responsive to drive, that is handsome, and that has a clean, stylish interior. And, those attributes don't belong to the Honda.

Current 2018 CX-9 Signature owner here. It's a nice car to drive, with nice feeling dive, squat and roll, as opposed to the more buttoned-up CX-5. A new generation of infotainment would do this car good, and so would an I-6, but the turbo 4 in the 2018 feels quite strong. And is the only engine I've seen advertised with two horsepower figures - one for 87 octane, and one for 93 (220 vs. 250 ... torque unchanged).

As soon as the door opens it automatically engages the parking brake and notifies you via aggressive chimes. After using the shifter 20 times it will become natural. TRY IT BEFORE DISCUSSING IT. There are several different seating configurations. You complain about it as if there aren’t any other options… same with the interior colour. There are several to choose from. • @vin6135

This summed it up, to roughly paraphrase …. “The Pilot does the 3 row family hauler thing better.” The interior is more flexible, there are more nooks and crannies for juice boxes, trinkets, toys, Kleenex, etc…. , the ride is softer, and as far as features IMO it’s a better value offering remote start on the fob (not thru subscription) in addition to matching most of the CX90s features for less. The CX90 is for the parents who need seating capacity but are passionate about driving and exclusivity (meaning that you won’t see yourself coming and going 100x in every Target parking lot). It’s def a step up in style and quality and really is a uniquely amazing vehicle for being a 3 row SUV. We haven’t had our CX90 PHEV for long but it’s been amazing. Our kids are older and typically have a phone or iPad and maybe a back pack. We don’t need tons of storage for little things. We need the seating capacity and the 3rd row down space for weekend errands. Not having the room for a second sporty car, the CX90 has to do double duty for me… family transportation and not be a penalty box. Not a Miata but it’s an amazing drive for what it is.

Yes! The gas mileage! 90% of our driving is well within the EV range. Bring the kids to school in the morning, run a couple of errands, come home and plug it in, pick the kids up and a few more errands, come home and plug-in for the night… Nearly 50 miles all on EV mode 5x a week. Crazy for such a large vehicle! And on longer trips, because it’s a hybrid, no range, anxiety, or fighting for public chargers. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Mazda drives nice very sporty it really felt like my old g37 sedan in handling, power and responsiveness. But it was too stiff for its purpose as a three row family suv. It’s great to drive but not super practical. Mazda is fun and will be fine if you don’t need a higher degree of practicality. Additional note on Mazda is that the midtrims like preferred plus doesn’t really have a nice feeling interior like mid trims of the pilot. Pilot is more boring but it handles well for the size with the torque vectoring awd system-basically a detuned Acura sh-awd system that is programmed less for cornering abilities. Pilot is just a few tweaks away from being the best practical three row. Just needs a nicer screen, stiffer steering to match its handling capabilities, and some small changes to make it more dynamic while staying smooth.

I like how literally every single use case for an SUV cited at the beginning of the video would be better served by a minivan. I’m not convinced that buyers actually want an SUV. That’s just what auto makers have decided to tell everyone they want, and the only thing they make now. If I had to have one of these things, it would 1000000% be the Mazda. But, I don’t have kids, and (like the vast majority of people who buy 3-row crossovers) the third row would never be used. The Mazda is a better car, the Honda is a better toaster (appliance).

Functionally the Pilot and MDX are superior in the three row segment and from the looks Dept only the MDX interior and exterior should be commended. One other consideration. If you live where it snows no vehicle will function better than the Acura SHAWD.

When you sit down in Grand Highlander or Honda Pilot you feel instantly that it is your family SUV. Maybe not all is perfect but they feel like a good fit for your expectations. With Mazda this relation is more complex . In lower trim, Preferred, with leather sits , moon roof and still stronger and faster engine than natural V6 competition, it is not a bad pick. Especially if you can get it for thousands less than comparable Pilot. Turbo S is by far the best choice. Simple and elegant interior, nicely loaded, best in class engine ,but without any claims to be luxury . It certainly have some shortcomings but overall still better package than 53K Pilot, and certainly you can negotiate the price below 51K. When Mazda get more expensive it and hit 62K it starts to suffer from self imposed luxury claim because it is lacking true refinement and capabilities of more expensive luxury brands. As somebody stated before it is a bit of identity crisis, not truly that sporty and fast as comparable BMW, Mercedes, Genesis or Acura S and not truly as much utility and off road capabilities as Pilot or Kia Telluride

Um, yeah... depending on the trim (white interior only available on a few), you have at least tan and black available, some also have gray and white, and based on the priceline shown, it is top line so has all 4 available. Also, that same generic shape of the Honda you complain about? It allows for a lot more interior room than the CX-90. It's motor trend... they always choose a Honda or Toyota except rare instances. Gotta say, with 2 or 3 kids, would get a 2nd row bench, use 3rd row for kids only and buy Mazda. It has almost everything in that model, the S Premium Plus, there really are no options, just a few accessories. I would get the one that drives better so Mommy and Daddy enjoy the drive and the kids don't feel thrown around.

Mazda is the most slept on Japanese vehicle company. Toyota and Honda think they are Audi and Mercedes and starting to bump their prices up. I’d take a Mazda that looks better and is just as reliable

The winner is the one YOU NEED. If youre not filling up all 7 seats then the Mazda wins. You can use the back and any empty seats for storage space. What the shelf on the dash, counts for more space than 2 empty seats?? Ridiculous!

First of all, why are you comparing the Turbo S to the Pilot? The base Turbo model CX90 competes with the Pilot, NOT the Turbo S. Do not understand the complaints about the shifter… I LOVE the short throws of the Mazda shifter. Can’t argue about the utility of the Pilot and the ingenuity of the 2d row bench. Also… the lack of cubbies and storage in the CX90 is definitely infuriating. However, I chose the Mazda over the Pilot ( and the MDX) because of the driving dynamics AND even more important THE GAS MILEAGE.

The Mazda fanboys in the comments are delusional! Why wouldn’t the bigger SUV with functionality, practicality, and space win? Y’all are so removed from reality that it’s crazy. It’s a reason why the Pilot is currently outselling it!

I don’t know about Mazda fanboys, but I know I have had a Honda my entire life, several of them. And they are great cars I currently have a 2022 Civic Si. But now I want an SUV and I just can’t do another Honda, Passport CR-V or Pilot cause the mid dull interior that I spend all my time in does not appeal to me at all for spending 45k and up. I drove both and I prefer the Mazda but I’m also going to look at a Grand Highlander too. I wish Honda cared about how the cars look on the inside and this would be a much easier decision

It is out selling it because it's a Honda, people blindly buy Hondas and Toyotas without giving it a second thought, a lot of the times they are not the best in class but they out sell the competition anyways, I personally don't buy a car based on it sales numbers, because if I did I would most likely end up with some ugly boring box on four wheels like everybody else.

Yeah I think a lot of them are missing the point, the cargo space and functionality and ease of use are probably the top priorities of people who buy these things. I don’t think most buyers of these know or care if it’s unlike 6 or RWD or 50-50 weight distribution etc
