Got around to doing this today. Your video was a great help. Couple of points: 1- The JT sprocket I got did have the rubber surround despite the Aussie website's image and part number. 2- My 2014 500X has the foot peg bracket much more forward (which blocks the plastic sprocket cover) but easy enough to remove the 2 x 8mm hex bolts 3- The chain tensioner system is different - but works on the same tension nut/lock nut setup so easy enough to mark the nuts and back off 8 turns like you did. 4- The rear wheel alignment system is also different to your bike. I didn't check the alignment marks before I started as I only recently got new tyres but after carefully rotating the nuts the same both sides, I could see looking down the chain from the rear sprocket it wasn't straight. It wasn't a big deal to adjust one nut 1-2/6ths of a turn to get both side markings aligned. Eyeing the chain with a ruler looked much more flush afterwards. Your bike's alignment system looks easier to me. 5- The extra tooth took my chain stretch guide back about 4mm. I was 20% into the green but now same distance back into the white. 6- My speedo (European model I believe in Aus) is now spot on..like +- 1km/h to my GPS apps. Brilliant! Taking her for a spin.. it really makes a difference to me as a 100% road bike! I get out of the intersection now before changing into 2nd and the engine note sounds sweeter as each gear plays out a little longer and the bike doesn't run out of legs as quick. No highway speeds yet but will report back on any cons. Cheers again!

Hello from UK. Brilliant comment and will help others with different models I suspect. I’m definitely never going back to 15 tooth. Just completed 1300 mile trip to Scotland, quite a bit of motorway cruising, it’s just better in every department. I guess Honda have that very low first gear for offfroad use, but I use this bike only for road so it’s nice to have 6 road gears. Yes my chain went into the white also. But I think it’ll soon be back in the green as it’s a bit of a budget chain, at least compared to my 690 Enduro R which hardly ever needs adjusting. We did recheck the chain alignment at the end (didn’t show in video as it was already too long, in this case it was fine, but then it had just come back from first service and the dealer said it’d been adjusted so it was good it worked out just by counting). Great feedback - cheers! 👍👍

I did the same thing on my 2019 Honda CB650R when it was new 4 years ago and 10k later, I'm never going back! The bike's still an animal when reved but it has that lovely 'serenity' at lower rpm's. As you mentioned, the speed you see is what you're doing, so the indicated speed is the actual speed you're travelling at and in 6th the engine feels rather distressed. Great mod, would recommend it to anyone!

@@CodgerBiker My theory is that many people may prefer the oomph and eagerness the bike has with 15 teeth. I personally found it tiresome. So 16 teeth is the way to go for me and that oomph is still there, we just need to rev the engine marginally more.

In order to jam the chain so you can remove the bolt on the front sprocket put a rag between the rear sprocket and the chain. When it gets jammed in between the wheel will stop.

Just seen the video. I've 25k miles on my CB500X with a 16t front sprocket,it's a great mod for those who like me don't ride off road,it reduces top speed which is no hardship as the fastest I get to is an occasional 80mph,motorway cruising at 70/75mph is now much better and a boon for me as I use the m/ways for 30 to 70mile per ride. 1st and 2nd are now more useable and third and fourth better on 30/40mph roads, and I find the bike's upped gearing better in the twisties. The only difference as hilighted in the video is for fast acceleration over 50mph you need to drop a cog from 6th to 5th but the bike isn't a power or toque monster after all. I find fuel consumption with the 16t is usually between 80 to 90mpg imperial, which drops to mid 70s mpg on long m/way trips. EDIT:- BTW I did file a mm or two off the chain guard when I fitted my 16t just to give it a little more clearance, but theapt said I know of many who don't.

I have a Voge 525DSX. The standard Front Sprocket is a 15T, but I found the gearing a bit short, so I changed it to a 16T. Finally, the 1st gear is usable and you only put 6th gear, when you already reached 110-120-130 kph in order to cruise. There is no change at the speedometer, since the measurement is done by the ABS and the rotations on the front wheel, so the declination between the GPS and the digital speedometer remains the same (around 8-9%). All I need to do is 2-3 fuel ups, to see if there is any difference to the fuel consumption, although on my first fuel up the consumption was significantly lower (around 0.7-0.8 litres per 100 kilometers).

Great Video but would like to knot the rev difference between the 15T vs 16T. Going to see if I can get the sprocket here in Canada, if so will be doing the swap. Thanks for the video, well worth watching. I just picked up my CB500X a moth ago and have over 1500 km on it and loving it. I put the GIVI wind screen on it because with a open face helmet was getting to much buffing around the helmet, was very annoying. but no buffing at all with the taller GIVI screen.

It’s about 10% lower revs. More than that it gives you a more road focused 1st gear. It all depends what you want. This is my road bike so it is so much better for me, also shifts the vibes to speeds I don’t tend to ride. It might not suit everyone. I think that first gear is low geared for offroad work. I have a 690 Enduro R for that - Curiously I always think its 1st gear is too high. So it depends what you like to do. I have a Puig screen to try sometime. I’ve used them in the past with success on other bikes. Overall I rate this bike. Great value (relatively anyway) and adaptable. Thanks for watching! 👍

I had a V-Strom 1000. In my area it was common to get caught in gridlock for many hours where there wasn't an alternative route. After hours of stop and go and creeping along it was an absolute misery due to the tall gearing and the endless clutch work needed. On my 500F, I could tick along slowly using that low first gear with very little clutch work . No more cramped up clutch hand or pumped up arm. The stock 500 gearing has its uses if you have to deal with really heavy traffic frequently. Why not lane split? It's not allowed here. Just as well when you consider how well people pay attention here when they change lanes.

Ah but we adopt the position of Inspector when the other comes up with a job. The idea is to sew doubt, create issues and generally be sniffy about anything the other thinks is a good idea. If confidence survives this trial by scepticism then the first stage of testing is achieved before the bike gets anywhere near the road. I believe Wham used a similar technique on their early songs. Ridgeley, of course, gained no credit for his role in pointing out that Wham Rap! was actually crap. Time may yet come to recognise his true genius, similarly Dr J Winner. 😉👍

Hello. This is my road bike. I also have a KTM 690 Enduro R for offroad. I therefore chose road orientated crash cover protection. Usually used on race bike to protect the clutch and stator cases in the event of a slide down the road. Much lighter than crash bars. I'm aiming to keep this bike light as possible. It's not the fastest road bike but corners pretty well I think. With these type of covers it is necessary to remove and clean behind from time-to-time, in my experience. There will be a video soon 👍

Funnily enough I had same conversation when I pulled into a service station recently. Personally I’m happy with the 16 tooth solution for me. The UK speedo now reads 100% accurate. The bike has a nicer 6th gear to cruise UK motorways, which tend to be policed at 70mph with cameras everywhere. The mod is relatively easy with no need to cut the chain. So it depends on personal circumstance. I like that I could put it back to stock in an hour if I so choose. Well that is my thoughts on UK roads. 👍

I did wonder myself so tested today, both bikes read about the same on trip meter. Fueling same 70-80+ UK mpg depending on the riding. On balance, I like it. 5th is nearly as 6th used to be.

Really hard to get in UK. You can get them in USA, but they won't post here so you have to get someone with a US address to forward it. I almost gave up then one came up on eBay from USA, I snapped it up. Basically keep an eye on eBay is all I can suggest. 👍

They are not available in the UK as Honda charges dealers to access them online I purchased mine in the USA and had it delivered to a relative there, cost was around £70. Also just remember no Hiss on American models so wiring diagrams differ slightly@@CodgerBiker
