For the latest BMW M340i pricing and information:
www.kbb.com/bmw/3-series/
This is the BMW M340i and guys, I’m gonna say it right now, I like this a whole lot more than I thought I would. Let’s talk about why.
The 3-Series acts as the workhorse of the BMW lineup. The base model, the 330i, comes standard with a 2-liter turbocharged ending (255 horsepower) and an 8-speed automatic transmission. No more manuals anywhere on the 3 until you’re talking M3, which will get to later.
BMW also offers a plug-in hybrid in the 330e which also gets that 2-liter without the turbo (181 hp) plus an electric motor (101 hp) that’s good for a total of 288 horses and a 12-kWh battery that yields 22 miles on pure electric range. Okay, that’s great if you’re looking for Bavarian efficiency.
This, the M340i is at the top of what I’ll call the “normal” 3-Series stack. This gets a 3.0-liter turbo straight 6 that makes 382 horsepower and comes with a 48-volt mild hybrid that is specifically for torque fill when you’re looking for power either off the line or a quick bump when you’re already at speed and say, passing someone.
VO: And hey, yo, folks, this guy delivers the promise of that premise.
Acceleration happens right at tip in. Juicy. Fat. Exciting. It’s there. Bam. This is quick and I like it. Just one note I also have X-Drive, which is BMW’s all-wheel drive system and that helps put the power down with some extra grip at every corner.
The BMW’s chassis feels sublime. It’s responsive and compliant but with the right dash of tautness. I seriously don’t remember driving a BMW 3-Series that’s felt this good before.
The suspension does a great job in different modes, well, that’s thanks to an adaptive M Sport suspension that’s got electronically controlled dampers and gives you a buttery smooth ride that’s still sporty. I’m not feeling a ton of unpleasant road imperfections under me. Even when hitting bumps that are bigger than they look. That suspension will cost you an additional $550 though. But more worth it than the $200 M 50 year badging we have on this car.
Two ways that road comes inside when you’re driving. The first, noise. It’s nice and quiet in here. There’s not a lot to distract, and the engine sounds pleasing when you’re in sport mode. Are they piping that into the cabin a bit. Maybe, but it’s not bothersome. Second, in the seat of your pants. The seats here are not exactly plush
The only other thing I’ll mention is the transmission. Shifts are so smooth they’re not even noticeable. If you’re not going to have the option of a manual, then make the transmission and good one that delivers power judiciously and selects gears well and this one does. You’ve also got paddles if you’re looking for some control over the situation.
All that and fuel economy isn’t as wallet busting as some other performance vehicles, except maybe when it comes to the high-performance M3. (M340i X-Drive MPG: 23 city/32 hwy; 330i MPG: 25 city/34 hwy; M3 MPG: 16 city/23 hwy)
Come inside and I’m again, pleased. Not too much screen but not too little. They’ve struck a nice balance with buttons for key functions. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are both standard but one gripe, connecting them isn’t always a successful situation. It took me a couple of times.
Wireless charging is an option (graphic: $200) but the head up display on the massive digital gauge cluster comes standard as well as the moonroof and power front seats.
The Driving Assistance Package ($700) will get you advanced driver assistance features including land departure warnings and assistance that frankly isn’t the smoothest in my opinion.
Base price on the 330i starts at $43,800. That 330e we talked about earlier will cost you $44,900. This M340i I’m driving with all the packages you could possibly want comes in at $68,470 (base price: $56,400) which feels like a veritable bargain to the base price of the M3 ($74,300), which gets a twin-turbo on the 6-cylinder 3-liter (473 hp/406 lb-ft torque) and a manual transmission - and you can go up to the MC Competition from there.
If you’re not as stoked about the BMW as I am, there are certainly other options including the Mercedes Benz C-Class, the Audi Q4, Volvo S60, yes, they still make it, the gorgeous Alfa Romeo Guilia or the Genesis G70, which the last time I compared it with the 3 Series in my book it won.
Again, color me floored. There’s not a lot that didn’t please me with the M340i from the why it looks to the way it drives. If BMW had lost any mojo with the previous generation 3 Series, I’d consider it found. Check it out for yourself. I think you’ll also be pleasantly surprised.

At least the m340i touring is made in Munich factory 😊
My coworker just purchased one of these after his other one (pre-facelift) was totaled in an accident. I have to say, I am not a fan of the face lifted version. BUT, these things are extremely quick for what they are. Between Challenger Scat Packs, Durango SRT’s, Audi S6’s, my BMW Z3 3.0 and my Model Y, we are all a bunch of gear heads and we love our fast cars. But that M340 for sure is the fastest of the bunch.

BMW M340i!!! if only made the touring model here! it would be so PRACTICAL!!!!!
I have the prefacelift 2021. Have been driving BMWs for 30 yrs. Best one ever up there with my E36 M3 back in 1999!!
Lovely car, precise review and with great details on what package is worth it or not! Heated options and LKA etc... on top of the base price for a luxury car shouldn't exist!
Great straightforward review!

I had the 2020 M340ix and it was fantastic! The reason bmw added the AWD to the M3 was because the M340ix was constantly beating the M3/M4 competition off the line. The other cars you mentioned are excellent alternatives, but they are a class below the BMW when it comes to performance and overall package. Currently I have the 2022 X3M comp and it’s a rocket. Burt he car is definitely not as comfortable as the M340ix. I do definitely agree, bmw seats leave a lot to be desired. I’d say the competition has much better seats. I’d say the Volvo has the best seat in class.

My friend has a BMW M5 and a Volvo XC90. The difference in comfort is night and day.
This is the only car I would consider having over my '22 Model 3P but the seats could be a deal killer.
Unfortunately, your press car doesn’t have Driving Assistant Professjonal on it, so it’s really not one with all the bells and whistles. DAP is better than the regular driving assistance package because it utilizes more cameras and a radar sensor in front vs the more rudimentary system.
Inked a deal yesterday with a local Canadian BMW dealer for an M340i with all major options except one. Though the price comparisons between the Canadian and US models are difficult for options because the packages seem to be different, the base Canadian price seems to be a little lower after direct currency conversion. The Canadian option prices though seem to be somewhat higher but difficult to compare as mentioned before. It may very well be the final prices with options included are not wildly different after currency conversion. However, what irks me most is the following. I've been an Acura driver for quite some time, with TL Type S and TLX SH-AWD, Had almost made up my mind for the new TLX Type S. But having researched TLX Type S, Audi S5 and M340i, decided on the last one for a variety of reasons - excluding the BMW allure. Even so, what disappointed me a lot was that I would be paying north of a five-figure CAD EXTRA to get the features in M340i that come standard in TLX Type S!! BMW may justify its business decision based on its allure, but allure can only go so far!! It's an excellent video!! Mostly confirms my OWN reasons for choosing M340i over others.😀
This is my favorite bmw front end. It is so simple looking and the grilles aren’t humongous. If only bmw brought this design language to the rest of their line up, all their veggies would be so much better looking.

Looks great in red.
Fantastic review!!! The red is nice, but I would like to introduce you to Dravit Gray Metallic. That color, imo, transforms this car to a whole different level.
Loved the laps in the storage facility!
Nice review. FYI, the BMW 330e plug-in does come with a de-tuned version of the same 2.0-liter inline 4 cylinder with a twin power turbo. You mentioned there was no turbo for the plug-in version and I was slightly offended because I currently own a 2023 330e. 😊🤓🙃 From BMW USA: Engine, transmission, and aerodynamic features. 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder, 16-valve 181-hp engine; combines a twin-scroll turbocharger with variable valve control (Double-VANOS and Valvetronic), high-precision direct injection and eDrive 107-hp electric motor (total power output of 288 hp)

Good looking car, still a little sedate, but it works for this segment. The color doesn't do it justice. I own its rival the B9 Audi S4, and it also has sedate looks. You can't go wrong with either one. People always harp on the Electric steering of these cars but it's really not that bad. That is, if you get the dynamic steering. Great review

I will have to disagree, I own a 22 M340i and just drove a 23 3 Series 800km across Germany and thought the seats were great. Very supportive but holds you in in the corners. Other than that, it was a great review.

Thanks for this take. I have 23 340 on order right now in this exact color. I chose to stay with the sensatech seats as I didn't really care for the leather option. We generally drive no further than an hour for the vast majority of our trips, maybe a 3-4hr trip once or twice a year. Anything over that and I'm driving to the airport.
ngl I love pre-facelift more. not a big fan of big tv stuck there, it looks odd to me and also the gear shifter😑
Well if the lane assist stuff doesn't work very well, then I'm glad I have the option of not paying for it? At least that's probably what BMW wants me to think.
5:35 "They have plenty of buttons" ... not sure I agree with this. Isn't iDrive 8's HVAC layout universally confusing? Definitely preferred the usability and aesthetic of the old iDrive 7.5 with HVAC buttons, integrated screen and a recessed cockpit view. Not sure why everyone likes tablets now

I agree; I just picked up my 2023 540i last month, after a 7-month, 3-day wait (individual color), and I love the fact that I still have HVAC buttons; next redesign, the G60, I'm afraid will have them integrated in the touchscreen just like the new 3 series. Such a shame.

Largely agree, though the Q50 is a bit long in the tooth now. The TLX (of which I have a 21 A-Spec) is a little on the slow side in this segment but can be remedied with a tune. That aside, it’s a great car with above avg chassis dynamics. (Chassis setup is the main reason why the Type S is faster than the G70 3.3/Stinger GT in CD’s lighting lap.)

This is a terrific car. I was in the market last summer, and the BMW m340 was at the top of my list. The engine is as good as it gets, with terrific performance. Unfortunately, at that time, I couldn’t get it in red (my first choice), and the interior- especially the leather, was cheap and uncomfortable, and I hate that you see a 3 series on every corner. I ended up with an S4 in Tango red. Nearly the same performance, better interior quality, superior massaging nappa leather, better ride - even for long trips, and a little less common. Beemers are just classic cars. The downside to that is the baggage that comes from being so well known. In some circles, BMW drivers are reviled for their driving, or their presumed attitude, or just the fact that they can spend so much money on car. The online forums are full of people who adore those cars, and woe unto you if you don't share that adoration. All in all, I find them a great car to look at and drive, but not one I'd own. I love the Tuetonic engineering, but a little lower profile. ;) Lynn is great as always. Thanks for the review. Now lets see the Beemer go head to head with some of that competition.
Subscription based pricing on features can go to hell. It means the care will come "pre-wired" with the ability to have all the features, but they'll just turn some of them off to charge you again and continuously. It's a scam. It's another way for these brands to take our money without adding any value in return.

I mean...look, for a $40k+ vehicle, I expect a lot standard. My 2019 Fusion Titanium PHEV has heated and cooled front seats, a heated steering wheel, all all that other jazz. If you can't include that standard in something that's arguably a luxury vehicle then maybe don't be in the "entry level" luxury vehicle game, you know? Also, subscription-based *anything* for cars is BS and should be illegal. I'd argue it's worse than Ford's pending patent for a self-driving vehicle that repossesses itself if you fall behind on payments. Also, whose hangar is that?! That plane is friggin neat!

If you're looking for features, there are lots of cars out there that are more feature complete than a BMW 3 series. The point of a BMW 3 series, especially the M340i, is to put a smile on your face as you drive it. Guaranteed that Fusion Titanium PHEV will not do that the same way an M340i will. You are paying for the engineering, not the features.

Really good test, whatever your name is. I wish you guys would use timing gear...even Edmunds is finally doing "real" tests. The mpg smashes competitors, especially the idiots using a V-6. Learning iDrive 8 isn't any more complicated than learning an iOS update. Try figuring out UConnect in under two weeks. BMW will not F**k up the design of the bread-and-butter cars like the 3, 5 X3, X5. They generally "experiment" on low production models. One work about Hyundai and Genesis: They look high quality when they're new. But 20Kmi down the road, the wear shows you why they're so cheap.
