2023-05-01 Swami Sarvapriyananda and Michael James: Advaita Vedanta and Ramana Maharshi’s teachings

In a Zoom meeting with the Ramana group, Helsinki, on 1st May 2023, there was a very special gathering with the guests Swami Sarvapriyananda and Michael James who discussed the essence of Advaita Vedanta and the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, and how to put these teachings into practice.
The event was broadcasted live on Zoom/KZread and reached hundreds of participants. The discussion brought up many interesting and deep insights about the true core of Advaita and how Sri Ramana has given an easy but also subtle practice of self-investigation. In the end this is the only practice to eliminate the ego, which seems to exist if not investigated.
A clearer audio copy of this video can be listened to or downloaded from Sri Ramana Teachings podcast (ramanahou.podbean.com ): ramanahou.podbean.com/e/advai... and a more compressed audio copy in Opus format (which can be listened on the VLC media player and some other apps) can be downloaded from mediafire.com/file/f94m4276qs...
Another recording of this same discussion is also available at • Advaita Vedanta and th... on Jussi Penttinen’s channel, / @jussipenttinen

I love how well versed in the material the swami is but you immediately understand that Michael is presenting the teaching in its pristine form. Thousands of years of philosophical conjecture have perhaps been sincere but it may be that the greatest gift of Ramana was to point to the truth directly, and that is what Michael James amplifies for our benefit.

I was just beginning to realise advaita. Just as I was realising this I began noticing certain changes in me. I realised world is a play of energy. Shivas cosmic dance. Then I suddenly stopped because I was beginning to be pulled apart from my family . Then I realised I have duties to my family. I can't get into this without fulfilling responsibilities to family. So I request you to spread message to everybody to get into vedanta only after fulfilling family responsibilities.

Fulfilling duty to family is also nondual. It only feels like being pulled away because of latent attachment to a projection of what spiritual life ought to be. Let go of subtle projections and be a nondual householder. Householders can be fully immersed in the nondual because nonduality is simply the truth.

To anyone struggling with ramana's teachings, all you have to do is hold on to the feeling of "I" and that's it. I accidentally stumbled upon this technique and I became enlightened on my own in 2 weeks at age 31 (now 34). I didn't go through ego death, as my merging with the universal consciousness was making functioning in the world very challenging, and out of compassion for my family and cat, I decided to stay in the world. So, hold on to the feeling of "I" for a few hours a night after work, and watch it happen. Time will stand still, and everything will look like you're on psychedelics. Love you all ❤️

If anyone is interested then Swami Sarvapriyananda can be found in conversation on KZread with Bernardo Kastrup.. This happened very recently. I think that Bernardo is a very significant person indeed . Here we have a very highly qualified scientist philosopher who gives compelling evidence for Idealism. This was bound to happen because Quantum Physics seems to be catching up with the aeons old philosophy of Advaita Vedanta. Advaita doesn't need scientific validation as it stands alone . Personally I think we are on the cusp of a change in scientific outlook that will be more profound than Heliocentrism. Bernardo in my humble opinion is one of the forerunners of this cultural change . I am hoping that our Blessed Michael will be able to chat with Bernardo . That will be a treat indeed 🙂. 🙏🕉️

I do not share your enthusiasm. This video here is one of the very few by Michael I can live without, it is just a chat and scratches barely the surface of Bhagavan's upadesa. I am also not interested in the musings of Swami Sarvapriyananda and Bernardo Kastrup and anybody else who is not following Bhagavan's path. That said, should Michael make another video like that I won't watch it. Of course this kind of video attracts many more seekers (what is necessarily not a good thing) and is spiritual click-bait 🙂

  • @johnmcdonald260

    @johnmcdonald260

My point is, for a devotee of Bhagavan there is no need for the concepts of other teachers or philosophies. A scientific outlook is irrelevant and part of maya, it can never touch what Bhagavan has taught. What does it matter if we are indeed on the cusp of a change in scientific outlook? Scientific outlooks are born by jivas with limited understanding, and as you've correctly said, there is no need for scientific validation. And why? Because science can never validate pure consciousness since it does not even exist in pure consciousness. Science, no matter what science, is actually ignorance. Bernardo could never add something relevant to Bhagavan's teaching.

Each of what I am about to disclose is a higher, closely guarded secret, and these are being shared to provide a true picture of affairs, and to give people another chance at salvation." *** Why the Creator Seeks to Save All Life "...The Creator is the Lord of all divine beings in the Cosmos. Most respected swami ji. We have received adequate Explanations and analyses. Can you state what one has to DO to obtain “Brahman” “pure advaita” or “pure consciousness”? WHAT that is well and clearly described . DONE. But With the sole exception of Bhagavan Ramana Rishi no one has actually attained “pure awareness”. Have they? That is so because we do not know what exactly you want us to DO.

This comprehensive liberation that Bhagavan Maha Rama Rishi achieved at the age of 16 can be achieved by anybody (as per Advaita) and this liberation comprises of three components: The first is what we term "Enlightenment" in Sanskrit - a realization of reality, where individuals confidently state, "I have seen it" or "I get it." But, intellectually realising the truth of reality alone isn't sufficient; two more components are vital: The second is "Vasana," the purification of the mind, involving the eradication of past impressions. The third, "Manasa," signifies the destruction of the mind, allowing for deep meditation, an advanced form known as Samadhi. In accordance with this text, achieving full-blown liberation in this lifetime necessitates understanding the truth of one's nature as Atman Brahman or pure consciousness. This realization must be vivid, clear, and beyond doubt. The second component involves transforming an impure mind, a result of life conditioning, into a pure mind. This requires dedicated ethical living, manifesting the enlightenment realization through a morally upright life. The third component is intensive meditation training to prevent the mind from wavering and to maintain focus on reality in Samadhi. Complete enlightenment is attained when all three components are developed. Such an enlightened individual would not morally falter. The text also distinguishes between those on a progressive path and those with direct realization, asserting that those who have followed a progressive path experience full-blown enlightenment. For others, stumbling upon enlightenment requires a deep inquiry, after which intensifying spiritual practices, maintaining a moral life, exercising self-restraint, and deepening meditation are recommended to stay with the newfound truth.

if nothing is there and consciousness is by default just plain blank, what is point of being in blank state. Won't it become bored of just being in a blank state ? • @johnmcdonald260

First of all pure consciousness is not really a "blank" (and to know that actual Self-enquiry is necessary). That is a judgment of the ego which is addicted to multiplicity and an immense variety of objects. It is also from the viewpoint of the ego that believes to get bored. The ego itself is the problem and the solution is to realize that this ego and its world is an imagination and not real. In order that there is a curiosity or interest to explore pure consciousness the ego (or what you to believe to be - this person) unfortunately needs to suffer a great deal to realize that this multiplicity does not give lasting happiness, it is always a cycle of pleasure and pain until one finally wants to end that cycle. Once that desire appears the first steps on a spiritual path are taken. Until then one keeps chasing pleasure and tries to avoid pain and suffering, an endless cycle of hell. It seems you have not suffered enough to be willing to explore infinite and lasting happiness as pure consciousness which is not a blank but subtle peace, full and empty, beyond the comprehension of mind.

@@johnmcdonald260 Thanks for the explanation. If the inherent nature of consciousness is joy and peaceful, why it created ego ( if there is only consciousness then ego has to come from it only) in the first place. Why it projected world from itself and then entangled itself in it. If it comes out of entanglement from ego and maya or whatever it is , will it stay like that forever or after some time go back to ego and the same cycle repeats. ( i don't know what that really is - but from various books and videos my understanding is - " realising oneself to be pure consciousness and not associating with the avatar in the waking world, dream world and sleep is the essence of that") . So will an enlightened person after some amount of time again go back to ego and maya ? . Why consciousness created or projected the world , why does it do that. why it cannot be just remain as is in joy and peace ?

  • @johnmcdonald260

@@next-topgaming Bhagavan was asked that question often. Pure consciousness did not create ego, it is not even aware of ego. The ego cannot exist without pure consciousness, however it is unreal seemingly appearing in consciousness. Since the ego is not real one cannot know the cause of its appearance, that would be trying to know the name of the child of a barren woman. With the rise of the ego this world appears too (pure consciousness did not create or project this world, only ego does) and with that the whole cycle of maya. Bhagavan suggested to look if that ego really exists (Self-enquiry) and if one has found the ego then one can wonder why or how it came to be. Since there is truly no ego that question evaporates after that is practically realized. There is no such thing as an “enlightened person” what would suggest that ego is pure consciousness. That is not the case. No person or ego can be pure consciousness or enlightenment. The ego needs to evaporate and with that any sense of individuality what we now consider to be, that mind and body. Self-realization is the annihilation of the phantom mind and only pure consciousness is left. That is a permanent state, in fact only pure consciousness ever existed but that is only completely clear after realizing self.

@@johnmcdonald260 The whole vedantha way of understanding this relies on logical reasoning. For example, since there can be nothing apart from consciousness, the world is not real and so on. Hence it relies on questioning and reasoning to come to the conclusions. The logical reasoning breaks down when questions arise on what creates ego ( or the illusion of ego) . What is the need for consciousness to explore itself by limiting itself to bounded objects in the world. I think only by taking a third person view, it can inspect itself. Why it is doing so and for what, that i think nobody knows. The problem of conciousness , i think it still open.

  • @johnmcdonald260

@@next-topgaming [Pure] consciousness is not exploring itself by limiting itself, that concept comes from half-baked spiritual teachers - that is not what Sri Ramana has taught. Pure consciousness is perfect - perfection does not limit itself, that is a preposterous idea. The limitation is the appearance of the ego and with that consciousness is seemingly connected with insentient matter through a “knot” called chit- jada-granthi. Ego needs to explore its chit-aspect (what is called Self-enquiry) and by doing so it realizes its own non-existence in being or attending to chit and only chit and not to any adjuncts like this world or any phenomena. Pure consciousness is NEVER doing anything, the only doer is the ego and even here in order to realize self being is the only way and not doing.

The “snake” is the interpretations, models, theories and beliefs superimposed to “what is”. The rope is “what is”. The rope is Consciousness. The snake is the measurements and the interpretations of the appearances of Consciousness. Phenomenon means “that which appears”. The root meaning of the word “maya” is "to measure". When you consider the measurements as if they were the beings and things themselves, you are living in illusion. There is only Consciouness.
