2022 Razer Blade 15 & 17 Review !

Ғылым және технология

Review of the 2022 Razer Blade 15 and Razer Blade 17. The latest from Razer comes packed with Intel's 12th Gen processors and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080TI. A few other minor updates to the design to make it an overall better laptop! Watch for the full review.
Two mistakes I made in the video. TGP of GPU is 165W. There are 2 NVME SSDs in the Blade 15 not 1. They are stacked.
Blade 15 TGP - 105W
Blade 17 TGP - 165W

the 15" version with the 12900H, 3080Ti & 4K/144Hz screen is £4400 in my country (UK), which is the equivalent of $5910 USD. On the US site, it's listed as $3999 (£2973), so in the UK we're effectively paying a tariff of $1911 (£1420), or 47%!! I'm personally not sure the Razer premium is really worth it for most people...

3 hours probably because of the 4k display. These processors are getting more efficient relative to their performance, but they’re not consuming less power overall, so battery life is only getting worse as we transition to higher resolution displays. I really hope battery technology starts giving us smaller units, because with QHD being the new norm, it’s really needed (although 100+ WH batteries are exceedingly rare due to flight regulations with lithium ion batteries).

Frankly I'm really excited to hear the speakers. I've had two Blade 15's (Advanced 2070 & 3070), and have to say I was WILDLY dissapointed with the sound quality of the 2021 Blade 15's speaker quality. I found my 2019 Blade Advanced w/ Dolby Atmos capable speakers to sound exponentially better than my current Blade 15. I understand the 2022 Blade 15 and 17 don't have the same speaker array, but I really hope this year's models across both SKU's sound good!

Awesome review. One thing holding me back to get a new blade 15 is the drop of refreshing rate when the laptop is unplugged. The refreshing rate can be put back up to 240 Hz only if you switch to dedicated GPU, which greatly decreases the battery life. The older mode (2020 or before) doesn't have this problem. (For the old ones, Optimus mode allows high refreshing rate) Did razer manage to solve this problem in the new gen?

  • @JimIBobIJones

    @JimIBobIJones

    2 жыл бұрын

@@Max-pr1ii Yeah, no. The batteries are the exactly the same as any other laptop - whether that's Mac, Chromebook, Linux or whatever. They are all the same Lithium batteries. The issue is with gaming laptops with dedicated GPUs. Windows laptops can game, so the high end for windows is filled with gaming laptops rather than "prestige" ones. These which come clocked at much higher TDP with more powerful (and power hungry) GPUs. To put that in context, the last macbook pro with a dedicated, powerful GPU (2018 model with AMD Vega 20) could only achieve 6 1/2 of light-moderate load (youtube videos and browsing). Windows ultrabooks with low TDPs and iGpus have no worse battery lives than the competition - with many being able to match the 14-18 hours on the various models of M1 macs. And like I said, you can lower the TDP/underclock your CPU quite easily and switch off dedicated graphics (if you have optimus or AMD's dynamic switchable graphics) which will make even the most power hungry gaming beast significantly more energy efficient for when you need battery life over gaming.

My current 17" mid-2021 model I'm sending back because the high pitch noise drives me insane even with headphones on. I'm not talking about regular fan "whoosh" noise, it's almost a whistle. It can kinda chirp and resonate as the fan speeds change as well. It was like this out of the box. Even with replacement fan it still sounds like this. I'm convinced it's a design problem and hope they fixed the issue here.

I’ve had two Razer Laptops now and I’ve only had problems with them. The first one I bought had an appearance defect on the trackpad and crashed constantly. Got that one replaced and the second one crashed as well just not as frequently. Mind you all I really do on it is music production, school, and watching KZread. I’ve gamed on it before but haven’t done that in a long time. Also when it crashes it’s never because it’s under load it’s usually when it’s idle(regarding the latest one). It just stopped working a couple days ago, stuck on the boot up screen. For the high end Lambo price you would think they have their quality control together🤦🏻‍♂️. For anyone that wants to know the model I have is the Razer 15 2018. By now it’s a older version but I started having these problems within the first year. You’d think it would last longer but nope. Don’t get me wrong Razer computers are in my opinion probably the best if they didnt have quality control issues. That puts a pretty big dent in their rep and brand for me. Maybe they got better with that, maybe not. Probably why I’m watching this video lol. Most likely switching to a Mac Pro M1 though

Hey Matt, I know this video has been up for a while, but I'm wondering about the fan noise difference in the 2022 and 2021's Blade 17s. Your videos show 58 dBA "on max" and 55 dBA "on auto" for the 2021 model, and 52 dBA for the 2022 model. I wonder if this 2022 figure is comparable to the "on max" or to the "on auto" figure from 2021? The difference seems quite jarring.

  • @MatthewMoniz

There is no turbo mode on the Blades. you can boost the CPU and GPU but when you do that you have no control over the fan. If you put it on balance mode you can crank the fan as loud as you want but have less performance. As for battery life its based on office productivity work, conference calls etc. Its done using PC Marks Modern Office test.

Can someone explain to me why gaming laptops nowadays have minimal ports? I got my 2016 model laptop in 2017 and it has 4 USB ports, one USB c thunderbolt, one HDMI, 2 mini display ports, one vga port, multi card reader, audio out/in and mic ports, Ethernet port and that weird port that lights up red I think it's optical or something. I may have also not mentioned one or two more ports. I paid 2400 for this laptop back in 2017. Modern laptops that cost 4k don't have half the ports mine does. What's up with that? Also why do modern laptops have very minimal ventilation vents on the bottom? The bottom of the laptop I mentioned has vents covering nearly the entire bottom side and even the left right and back has vents.

About that MUX switch. On a Razer Blade 15 (2020) running Linux Mint 20 you have the option to run with Intel (power saving), Nvidia (performance) or Nvidia (on demand). The last option was very useful in that all apps ran using Intel graphics by default unless you right-mouse click on the app icon and choose to run with Nvidia. This saves having to reboot your machine, saving battery and use Nvidia when you need it. This is with an RTX 2060. So how does this differ to the MUX switch?

Will they fix the battery swelling issue????? My Blade 15 (rtx 2070 Mercury White) was too swollen to click the track pad, so I removed the battery and Voila, back to normal size sans battery. The replacement battery I ordered on NewEgg was garbage (LBTECH) and came damaged with a massive crack in the metal shell and a noticable kink! Wanna know the only right position for a power button? Side of a laptop. Doesn't get confused with Delete key on your keyboard and allows you to turn on your computer, when you have it docked somewhere, with lid closed. Why nobody does it nowadays? Annoying thing is that having the machine plugged-in most of the time isn't great for the lithium and makes it even worse over time. Has anyone heard of pass-through..... Unfortunate as the razer chassis is the only one I like....
