2022 PINOCCHIO MOVIES! Which Was The Best? - Disney vs Guillermo Del Toro vs Vasiliy Rovenskiy!
Фильм және анимация
2022 Pinocchio movies are apparently a genre of animation now! Who would've thunk?! Well, before we ring in the New Year of 2023, let's take a look at the three times Pinocchio graced us at the movies this year and decide which one is the best! Will it be Pinocchio a True Story featuring yassified Pauly Shore and out of place Tom Kenny? Will it be the Disney 2022 remake of Pinocchio featuring CGI galore as well as completely botched story beats and morals? Or will it be the Netflix Pinocchio adaptation by Guillermo Del Toro? Aka, the only good one? Well, I guess that doesn't leave much to the imagination, but hey, hopefully it'll be fun to see me break down all 3 of these movies, give each a well deserved review and analysis, and hopefully end this otherwise meh year for animation on a really good note! Until then, Ciao Papa!......I mean audience! And as always, likes and comments are extremely appreciated, especially for videos as late as this one. ^^
P.S - I'll have a year end update hopefully ready for you guys soon, and yes it will include more Cartoon Clash amongst other things. ^^

The thing I love about Del Toro’s version is how janky and almost nonhuman Pinocchio moves at the start, as that is basically how a actual wooden puppet would probably move if had no strings or supports attached to it and had to learn how to move it’s self. Del Toro’s vs the others in 2022 is like using a flamethrower vs a stick (I also chose a flamethrower since Pinocchio is made of wood).
The way you described the Guillermo del Toro version makes it sound beautiful & very deep. It is now one of my favourite movies ever! I swear that it could’ve just as easily been called “Pinocchio and the Meaning of Life”, seeing how it opens & ends with a pine cone, a symbol of life & death. The way Pinocchio himself inspires Candlewick & Spazzatura to stand up to abusive figures (the Podesta or Count Volpe respectively), or Geppetto to let Carlo go. He became the hero they all needed (especially Candlewick to be honest, as he knew more about being human than his father ever has or ever will). The way you described Pinocchio himself as a metaphor for art that lives on is so beautiful & should inspire people to come. It is art at a time where most movies today are made just to make money. By at least 2032 (when it would be 10 years old), I would love “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” to be preserved into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

I listen to what this youtuber said about Del Toro's Pinocchio and it's core message about making choices, to teach lessons that'll endure others before our time on this little planet clocks out got me right here. Lemme give a little info about myself. A few years ago, I was looking through nostalgic content and lost media when I came across this page about a cancelled crossover film that was to star 90s Nicktoons (in the styles of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Lego Movie, and Wreck-it-Ralph) and I was so hooked that I began commenting on how IMO it may have or could work. I believe that was when it sparked something in me, to pitch these stories about rides, escapades; et cetera. I believe the first pitch treatment I ever produced was a crossover between Good Burger and Spongebob, where Plankton steals an oil drum filled to the brim with Ed's sauce after the many fails of trying to obtain the Krabby Patty Formula and Ed and Dexter go under the underwater world of Bikini Bottom to retrieve it; hilarity ensues. But I then lost interest and moved on to making two [incomplete] fanfics starring Popeye and company, one of them revolving around the opening of Universal's Islands of Adventure, featuring characters like The Cat In The Hat, Betty Boop, even Marvel legend himself Stan Lee was gonna be there. Currently, I've been working on a little tale that's in the early stages of treatment; hope I'm able to finish it, but in case you're wondering, it's a fanfic for Project: Playtime, spinoff to Poppy Playtime. P.S. There were also several other stories I had in mind, but they never came far through brainstorming. One of which is an AAHHH! Real Monsters crossover with the Ghostbusters (not referring to the cartoons) with the Ghostbusters finding themselves in an alternate reality where monsters indeed exist. Paranormal activity involved. P.P.S. There was also going to be a rendition of Elizabeth Van Lew's time during the American civil war, replacing the real people with the cast from Pepper Ann. P.P.P.S. Now that I think about it, the first two fanfics pitches I ever produced were the "Ernest & The Simpsons" and "Men In Scissorbeetles/Scissorjuice," with the latter being about the Men In Black during a secret mission gone wrong, accidentally stepping onto a teleporter that transfers both agents into separate universes. But here's the thing: the teleporter was able to trigger some kind of reaction that has both our protagonists (well, one of them an anti-hero) Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, who Beetlejuice refers to as "Ed" or "Eddie," take the agents place in another attempt to fulfill this failed mission. I even considered have Pee-Wee Herman joining them or being just an honorable mention (or a dishonorable mention, in Beetlejuice's case, given how he had great trauma from the time he tried to manipulate Pee-Wee into saying his name repeatedly and he succeeded, but at a cost of lasting for a few weeks of annoying talking furniture, singing little kiddie songs (views them as s**t), and the ear-grating laughter of said customer), or just a small cameo.

The artist and his creation analysis from Del Toro's version is something I didn't even think about as I watch this movie over and over. As someone who has a life long passion for art, but has a professional career far away from anything similar, returning back to it has always been so terrifying. This movie already helped me to rethink about loss, grief, and death that had defined the beginning of my adulthood. And this additional messaging on art and artists... I needed this movie in my life. I love it so much. 🥺

Regarding the "True" story of Pinocchio - I'm surprised you left out the scene where the cat flat out shoots him. That's a "WHAT?!?!?!" moment if I ever saw one. That said, the Del Toro version was so amazing, and just seeing a few shots of the ending in your review brought the tears back. I found it breathtakingly beautiful, uniquely original, and almost perfect (the songs in the early part of the film felt shoehorned in IMO but this is such a minor quibble). It was so worth all the years it took to get here.

I never thought of Pinocchio in Del Toro's movie as an allegory for art. But... it makes so much sense ! And the message is especially relevant now more than it ever will be, thanks to the tragedy of AI generated images eating more and more of the art industry. Art is finally becomming the puppet, when its strings used to be free. Make art, people.

In 2022 we also got 2 other versions of Pinocchio, Puss in Boots the last wish that even had Gepeto and the Cricket and another Pinocchio in Part 6 JoJo as part of the Bohemian Rhapsody arc.
great breakdown of the movies, really enjoyed seeing what were your thoughts on the original pinocchio and why was it so wonderful. it's a video worth of ending the year on. now all we need is a puss in boots 2 video.
27:06 and thus I'd still do think Guillermo Del Toro's version of Pinocchio is the better version both visually and literally with it's morals and great characters and Great stop motion animation this is the Best version of Pinocchio
Wow, that reading of Del Toro's Pinocchio as a metaphor for art someone puts in the world was gorgeous. It even ties in nicely with the role of constructive naughtiness and rebellion in its story. Your breakdown of the clock scene got me thinking that what I got out of it and the early scenes with Gepetto was more that Gepetto is an adult who has never had a child. He's creative and has a childlike quality, nurturing instinct, and love to give, but he's likely never actually done the hard work of raising a human. He's never had to childproof his home or workshop (full of delicate machinery, tools, fire and a GUN), and while he is a good caretaker of a cat and fish, with Pinocchio he's in over his head and naive (at least walk your kid to school for the first time the day after he's just born!). Which makes the contrast with Del Toro all the more interesting because that Gepetto HAS raised a child, but one who died young and remained a perfect angel in his memory. His challenge is very different, but both of them go through the terrible joy a child can bring.
It's weird that 2022 had so many of these 🤔
Let me say something about the Pauly Shore take. As a Russian by blood, this is not the country's best nor groundbreaking achievement. It made me confounded and dumbstruck that they usually make their films and series with optimism, care, time and dedication. In fact, Yuri Norshtein, one of Russia's prolific and influential animators and storytellers, has dedicated his whole life, alongside his wife and artist whom works for him, to make an animated film that is still in production for 40 years and they were still working on it! Russia's films and series has a lot of words to describe them individually. They are philosophical, satirical, witty, funny, heartwarming, tense, optimistic, bitter, sweet, tragic, charming, haunting, educative, loveable, beautiful, cute, down to earth, imaginative, fantastical, wonderful, deep, thought provoking and memorable. They DO NOT make films and series that they preach about communism. They most CERTAINLY do not. They tell personal stories and also adapt stories from everywhere else, even US. Rather it be folk tales, short stories, fairy tales, children's novels etc. Talking of which here are two recommendations that is about them. One is a 15 part documentary series called "Кто нарисовал нас?" or "Who drew us?" which it tells the history of Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian and Estonian animation. You can find it on KZread. The other recommendation is a website, "Animation Obsessive", in which it has a lot of stories, both biographical and behind-the-scenes, of animated films and series of the Russian animation industry. You can simply type, Animation Obsessive, to find it. Before I can finish this comment, I wanted to say something. Russian animation, alongside US, Canada, UK, France, Italy (both recently), a hint of Czech, Poland and China and also Japan were all apart of my life. I cannot imagine how I came about without them. That's all there is, there isn't anymore.

Through all his troubles, he stays innocent and the toy donkey parts make sense here, since there should be no real consequences to good deeds, and his perseverance rewards him when these parts are removed. Videos like this are why you're one of my favorite reviewers :) You put into perspective things that I remember about watching the original Disney adaptation of Pinocchio and never realized before; the characters (whether they be heroes or villains), scenes, and other aspects and really showcase what makes the original so special And yeah, what you said about people creating things is important. We do need people to showcase their creativities. Even if someone has worries that it won't look as good as they thought, they won't know what to improve on if they don't try; and trying is often the bravest and most beautiful thing a creative person can do :) Thank you for putting this out for us, Finn. Disney's live action remake is definitely the worst one by far imo. Like it has no soul, it's boring and it's plot is botched and not to mention how Honest John and Gideon look like roadkill
I never really found the 1940 version to a liking when I was a kid (mostly of the donkey scene that traumatized me) but the way you analyzed human uniqueness from Jiminy to Geppetto along with the actions and choices make us human which leads to the “I’m a real boy” scene, was such an eye opener, and gave me a beautiful interpretation of the film
26:10 And I just realized that you gave this movie the BIGGEST respect by showing the SPANISH version of the title rather than keeping it in English. Nice touch.
I like how Del Toro doesn’t treat his audience like children, not to say children didn’t watch it, but that he understands to some degree even children can understand mature and deep messages or themes in a story, even if they’re not old enough they can comprehend right from wrong
Everyone knew the message about Pinocchio, but you broke it down in a way I could never come up on my own. I'm gonna recommend this video to my sister.
I went and watched Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio after this, I enjoyed it.
With you talking about Jiminy Cricket I could not help but think about the series Once Upon a Time episode where we see his origins
Thanks for pointing out that clock thing. They aren't just to keep time, they're individuals with roles and choices, they represent a living, breathing town, even they're just wood on a movement loop.
the last part when he talked about creation and art , was so powerful
I have to be honest, this movie nearly made it above my all-time favorite movie. I absolutely love the visuals, the characters, I love the atmosphere and the lesson that is taught. It's so much deeper than I thought it could be. It's sad that it beats the live action from the company that made a perfect version so long ago, but it is what it is and greed will never be able to pass art like that.

Okay I love this
Is no one gonna talk about how in Pinnochio: A True Story, the villain's motivation is literally "I didn't get enough sleep so i evil"
One of the many, many things Del Toro's version of Pinocchio got right that almost all movies produced in the past decade have gotten wrong was that it followed the age-old filmmaking rule of "Show, don't tell!" Other movies have been busily putting agenda ahead of storytelling, which turns everything in them into boring garbage, as audiences are after entertainment, not sermons. The true brilliance of the Del Toro film is that it gets the message out, but does it the right way. Instead of making the mistake of parroting "Fascism is bad! Fascism is bad!" in every other line of dialogue like other films make the mistake of doing, Del Toro's masterpiece simply presents its beautiful, heart-wringing story, shows fascism for what it is, and lets the audience independently come to the conclusion that fascism is, in fact, bad without beating them over the head with the message as if it were a wooden club.
Here's how it goes: A True Story is best in terms of comedic value, the Remake is the worst, and the Guillermo Del Toro is the best of these films. Edit: It is now my headcanon that the Coachman was another inspiration for the Joker. Mainly the grin, but it's possible. Also, for those who say Gepetto shouldn't have sent Pinocchio to school the day after he was born, I'm willing to defend this since, well, Gepetto's old, and he probably didn't want to be the only thing to teach and prepare Pinocchio.
Yay, this type of videos back
all jokes aside this is a really profound and interesting video for a deep topic that was done and executed well. Well done man, what a show indeed.
I legit cried at the Del Toro segment. The movie is just a timeless masterpiece indeed. Saying this is the best animated movie of the year is an understatement. It's top 3 best animated movies of all time! Yes, all time. And it's my favorite stop motion animated movie. A film that redefined animation as a medium of storytelling. I used to think Guillermo Del Toro was an overrated director, but Pinocchio made him become one of the greatest directors of all time and now I found new appreciation for his past films. It is a love letter to animation fans. People who haven't seen that movie yet are living under a rock and giving all the attention to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which is a great movie but doesn't compete with Del Toro's movie. You can call Puss in Boots 2 your favorite all you want, but GDT's Pinocchio is the best!

A. In the 1940s version, Jiminy Cricket has this growth from beginning to end too- Beginning: can I get a medal too? Ending: thanks for doing that for him. He deserved to be a real boy. In the beginning it was about him and what he would get. In the end, it was about someone else. And that's why he gets the medal he didn't even ask about again. B. Guillermo del Toro's version is just magic. It's a far cry from both the book and the Disney version, and that's what makes it special- he poured his heart into making this and it shows. My only nitpick is Pinocchio not becoming a real boy at the end, but that's just a small drop in a huge ocean of amazing
Walt Disney's 1940 Pinocchio first release was a box office bomb. The news of this made Walt feel so bad that he had to be hospitalized for a time. A fun fact: This was the only Disney work that Mel Blanc did a part for (Cat's hiccup).

I think the main difference here is that Guillermo del Toro actually wanted to make a movie and not some quick buck out of people's nostalgia for classic pinnochio
The fact that a shovelware movie for Grandma is better than an actual Disney movie says a lot.
Oh boy here we go again (cue the next Pinocchio)
This is awesome Finn
Every frame of Pinocchio should be the loading screen wallpaper
Disney's Pinnocio and Russian Pinnocio having a slap fight while Del Torros Pinnocio is having a world shattering dbz fight with The Last Wish for best animated picture in the lower atmosphere
As long as stories are told they will never die including the bizarre ones
I watched Del Toro's version. It's an indescribable masterpiece. And the fact that the morals touch you so much that I almost cried watching the movie.
You really got me crying this time, because what you said about del Toro's Pinoccio is something i always think when i think about purpuse and meaning and, why i even try? Even when i have a writer's block now, i want to try and write about all the things i want to comunicate to the world; similar to sebastian the cricket: storys about imperfect fathers and imperfect sons.
One thing that irks me about the pleasure island scene in the remake is that it seems to punish the kids for indulging in things normal kids like. (Candy, soda, etc) In the original, the kids were enabled into smoking, drinking alcohol, fighting and vandalism. Things kids should NEVER do. They’re literally making asses of themselves. Also, Del Toro turning pleasure island into a fascist youth camp is brilliant.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio also has the upper hand of working so well in their respective dubbed languages. I'm learning French and Spanish, and I'm fluent in Tagalog, so I relistened the music from this movie three more times in those languages, and damn the voice acting is amazing! If you have a second language, I recommend rewatching it in that language.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocio and Original Disney Cartoon Animation Classic (not remake).
Del toro’s version is the winner, hands down!
It's funny, cause there was supposed to be 4, but Water of Life got pushed to this year.
Nobody seems to mention the fact that the war games ARE Toro's Paradise Island, and the new temptation is propaganda. There's a half second scene where the kids, newly brainwashed, have gas masks attached to their face as they're shoved out. Their faces are hidden, losing all humanity as they're overtaken by a long black head with large eyes- sound familiar? What an amazing way to do the donkey transformation so subtly and so quietly, yet the impact is all the same.
I love the subtle touch of the “Monstro” bg music from Kingdom Hearts in the disney pinocchio section
"my insides are made of unborn puppet flesh" with the meat circus theme. I see what you did there.
Here’s my prediction we’re gonna have 5 cinderella movies in 2024
Anyone else see the ridiculous irony in Disney bleaching the Pleasure Island scene for the remake even though the original movie intended to show the beer and cigars as what they were- a poor and very taboo choice?
Del toro
I loved when you showed the lion king on screen, thats my fav Disney movie infact
The Pauly Shore one at least has that so bad it's good quality going for it. Disney's just makes you want to watch a better version.
12:00 That made me jump. I was not expecting that.

Dell Toros was the g.o.a.t. of Pinocchio's
When you were describing the clock scene I heard the little ticks in the background and it terrified me. I had to take off my headphones and just sit there for a moment before going back. I’m not sure if this was intentional, but if it was, it worked.

Birds Sing, Fish Swim, Humans Create. . . . P.S. Did you see there's going to be Pinocchio steampunk souls like? "Lies of P" it is called.
“What’s that, a talking boy? *gun*”
My favourite part is when spy said “what” 17 times
O_o ....I never would've made that connection with the clocks in the original film. I thought it was just the animators showing they had some serious skills ^^;
