2022 Mini Cooper SE - In Focus: Range!

Let’s talk about the infamous Mini SE range! Covered in this video:
- Why was it designed with this range?
- What real world range can you expect?
- How does that compare to the Mini’s range computer?
- How do you calculate estimated range left on the battery?

Once again I must say thank you for yet another really useful, concise video. Much has been said about a the Mini SE (Mini Cooper S Electric here in the UK) range and indeed it’s less than useful GOM but at the heart of owning a Mini SE is the love of owning a Mini that is also an BEV, two things that make me happy every time I drive mine. I drive mine daily, 99% of my car journeys are in it, yes it isn’t the BEV for road trips but then I don’t road trip much and if I do I have an old ICE Mini Countryman that stands in.

Thank you for this video, especially the hints about how to find the true remaining charge and the trip odometer. I watched this video over 4 months ago while I was deciding whether to go ahead and buy one, and now that I've had mine for a week, I searched to find this video again as a reminder of how to find the real data and calculate the range. I knew that the GOM was not accurate, but I needed a refresher on how to calculate the better estimate. It doesn't appear that you are planning to make a version for Android phones, but it seems that I could easily make a spreadsheet like yours to let it do the math. I was already doing a similar thing to keep track of MPG on my old ICE Jetta, so keying in the data after each trip or after each full 100% recharge wouldn't be too much trouble. It's true that I wouldn't have that so handy on the phone, I suppose, but once I get a feeling for the car's efficiency under my driving style and usual roads, I'll have a better idea of what the real range would be. I appreciate this video very much!

At that commute range of 20 miles the current '23 will serve you well, as long as you don't need the SE for longer road trips often. My family still uses our Honda CR-V when we hit the road due to the lack of wide-spread charging stations in SC. I feel like there are too many questions around the '24 at this point to make a call on it. Apparently, it will be manufactured in China, while the '23 is still being made in Oxford, England. (In case you have a preference on where it's made.) It it was me, and range was not an issue, I would go ahead on the '23. When the '24 comes out, it will be a new platform. My personal preference is to not buy the first iteration of a new car platform due to possible design / quality issues.

Of course this is wonderful information, and thank you. But, (and as an EV owner), having to do range calculations on a regular basis, contributes to range anxiety. I'm here as part of my research, was highly considering the Mini. But now, with this info, of how inaccurate the range meter is, I'm seriously reconsidering. BMW really goofed here! The range is acceptable for me, but still isn't much. Now, to deal with a range meter that is off significantly, and I have to break out the math. It's issues like this, that are definitely a deterrent for the masses to adopt. Not being negative, just realistic. I love the Mini SE!

It's not as big of a 'daily use' issue as you might think. I only worry about range when I'm making a road trip (130+ miles) where I know I will have to charge at a public facility. I have not manually calculated range in a few months now. Once you know what your Mini is capable of, you can just keep an eye on the battery % and estimate in your head if you are getting low. I would not let the poor range meter prevent you from purchasing the SE since you said the range is acceptable. It is such a capable EV.

Can you elaborate about how far off the miles/kWh that the car states is from your calculated miles/kWh? Folks are testing this car online with far lower miles/kWh (3.4-3.5) than you seem to be managing. Is the car also misstating the miles/kWh average, or is that onscreen figure accurate? Does the miles/kWh automatically reset when the trip meter is set? Thanks for any advice MINI SE drivers can give on the actual range of these cars. Seems to be between 100 and 150, and few have driven way beyond 0% which sees to be available, but not necessarily without risk of battery damage if used there intentionally.

I have not tested the accuracy of the mi/kwh display on the trip computer because I always calculate my own. It has been a few days since I drove my SE, so I just checked some stuff tonight. It appears to be a running average that does not reset until you reset it manually with a long press of the button on the stalk. It does not reset when you reset miles. Over the winter, and with me driving almost 100% in Sport mode, my average miles per charge has dropped a little - I’m currently averaging around 122 miles of range overall. But I know if I drive more conservatively in Green mode (or really, just in Mid) that I can get that range back up to 128 or so pretty easily. If you look at some threads on the Inside EVs forum, I am not the only SE driver averaging in the 120s for range. Especially in warmer weather.

  • @minise-focus

    @minise-focus

    2 жыл бұрын

As a follow up - I just competed 87 miles in Sport mode with the mi/kwh meter reset to zero. The guess-o-meter said I had 28 miles remaining. Calculated range had 39 miles remaining. My calculated mi/kwh was 4.37 - the TRIP COMPUTER mi/kwh read 4.3. So that is pretty accurate. My total range could have been around 126 miles. Warmer weather definitely helps.

I guess I am a “people”. If you don’t have a place to regularly charge it (like at home), then it’s probably not the car for you. At my house we have three ICE vehicles and the SE. For around town and short trips, the MIni costs very little to operate. A gas fill up of one of our SUVs is currently around $45, and they get around 3 times the range of the SE. The SE costs $4 for a full charge, so $12 for equivalent mileage. Versus a $45 fill up. I just plug it in at night when needed. My first scheduled maintenance with Mini is a brake check two years from my purchase date. Other than that, I have to pay for windshield wiper fluid and tire rotations. And in 2023 I get a $7,500 tax credit. For my household, the Mini makes a lot of sense and saves money over operating an ICE.

@@cadriver2570 strictly for commuting only though. If you drive RT from SF to SJ, then making third stop is questionable. Also hotter days in summer & cooler days in winter is not fun as range anxiety kicks in for those trips. $30,000 is not cheap and for SF & LA area really need minimum 150 - 180 mile range EV (EPA rated) so one can travel comfortably at 70-75 MPH and use heater or A/C so stop calculating KWHs. No Doubt Mini EV is most fun & great car to drive. It’s way better that Tesla model 3 or model Y. But 115 mile really suited for smaller cities

@@clapon1907 Yep - based on what you describe with that geography - it would be tight. $30K minus tax credit of $7,500 makes it a worthy price point for buyers who don't have to worry about its range.

@@minise-focus we have L2 charger in the garage & the driveway that can be used simultaneously and we do have 2 EVs and ICE for longer trips. We had EVs since 2013. i3 range just didn’t cut it. Mini EV is such a great car and SO MUCH fun to drive but $30,000 can buy lots of gasoline. Hope BMW can make 180 mi range Mini EV (EPA rated) @ $35K, then probably a better bet.
