2021 Mini Cooper SE 12,000-Mile Owner Review

Ғылым және технология

The electric Mini is every bit as fun to drive as a gas-powered Cooper S, and maybe even more so. Here's what the Cooper SE is like to live with.

    Jesse, Yep. That's the thing some folks struggle to grasp. Range is just one measure of a car. For the money, I can't think of an EV that's more fun.

    I just bought the 2024 Mini electric. I was nervous about investing in it because they were so blatant about not allowing leases because they clearly don't want it back. They offered a super low financing deal at about half the interest rate of any other dealer. It suggests that they know the next generation of SEs will have much better range and the residuals will be awful in a few years. Despite the anxiety, i dont regret it at all. It's the most fun I've ever had driving a car and i absolutely love it.

    The next-gen top trim Cooper EVs are expected to have about double the range of the current Mini but since it will be initially be built in China it is not likely to be imported to the US for a few years due to the trade war. Who knows, but I'm hoping that will help keep the resale value of our 1st-gen Cooper SEs up due to their scarcity. They really are wonderful cars as long as you're okay with the range limitation.

    Thanks for this video. I’m in Miami and my car flooded two weeks ago. For that reason electric seems like a great move. Thanks for giving me the push to get it. I had a British Racing Green and the EV is the same gorgeous color! Happy Eving! There is also a $4k tax break here for getting the EV!!! Win-win!

    Excellent review, equal or better than motor week and the current BBC top gear. My only qualm with the mini is the mini advertisement is that it’s directed for younger people- I’m 50-years old, and ended up getting a i3s. I still like the mini and I’m glad it’s offered, but it appears a car for young. If a convertible SE comes around, I may be tempted to reconsider.

    Bill, Awesome review! I have a 2022 Cooper SE. I also love it. The whole point of this car is for your travel needs and the car's charging demands to exist hand in hand. In order to successfully own this car, you nearly have to have either a level 2 home charger or a public charger near worth. For example, I justify taking a few more car trips than before, because I can go recreate (bike rides) from a charging station near the bike path. This has successfully gotten me out for more bike miles. Mission accomplished, and I am very pleased to see this happening. My 2022 SE has the ability to switch off the gas stations in the navigation map within the settings menu. That's one of the things I tinkered with while the car was charging when it was too cold or salty outside to get out on the bike. I believe the curb weight of the SE is similar to a gasoline Cooper S with an automatic gearbox, or as you noted, around 300 pounds more than a six-speed Cooper S. I had to get used to driving with one pedal instead of three. In order to avoid driving other motorists crazy (heaven forbid....) with my brake lights flashing without need or reason, I find myself using the instantaneous energy consumption display. 20 miles per kilowatt-hour is the transition point. When that number is negative, the car is in dynamic, sorry, regenerative braking. The brake lights come on anywhere below -19.9. That 20.0 area is the closest you can come to coasting. The spot on the power/brake gauge (load meter) is not specific enough. I have found (in north-central New York) that the reduced regeneration setting is important if you are on snowy or icy pavement. If you leave the regen at full blast, the first time you take your foot off the throttle on snow, you are going to slide in a straight line, because there is no ABS nor traction control in regen. Active Cruise was only available in 2022 cars on the Iconic (+$7k) trim level. I wish I could retrofit it, but I fear that the wiring harnesses have been trimmed tightly to model-specific items, and it's going to take an electrically-savvy technician multiple hours and hundreds upon hundreds of dollars to replicate the changes needed. I have noticed it is now available as an option on our meager "Signature Plus" builds for 2023.

    Thanks! I searched & searched but I never found a way to switch off gas stations. I wonder if that option was added for the 2022 model year? If you get a chance to post a pic of the setting where I could try to change it, I'd appreciate a link.

    @@EVRider thanks! I’ve been reading a lot about the car and it use basically the same battery and drivetrain from the 2019 BMW i3. Which I think is a good thing since it’s a proven design that’s been on the market for many years now (sadly discontinued though).

    Hi Nicolas, Hey I deleted the earlier response I made since it was geared to a different review I had done on Cadillac's ELR plug-in hybrid. But yes, the Mini's battery does have thermal management (liquid cooling) and yes, as you point out in a separate post is based on the BMW i3 battery. I can tell you, like all EVs during cold weather, you will see a range drop. We saw a significant range drop over the weekend when the temperature got down to 37 degrees as we were driving from New Smyrna Beach to Jacksonville. No big deal here in Florida but just something to keep in mind given the Mini's limited range.

    @@EVRider Thanks for your response!! Yeah, I'm aware of the range drop in cold weather. But I live in Miami, so that's not a concern at all since I can probably count with one hand the days where it's less than 70 degrees. ; )

    I just purchased a 2022 MINI SE. I don't have a level 2 charger at home yet (that's a project for this upcoming year) and don't have easy access to level 2 or 3 chargers in my home town (they exist, just not near my home/work). So I've been charging at home via 110V (level 1). I'm concerned about battery degradation due to frequent charging. I've read that every time you plug it in, it's considered a charging cycle. Since the batteries (allegedly) have a limited charging cycle lifespan, I've been plugging it in when I'm around 30% battery and letting it charge to 100% before using it again. Unfortunately this can take a couple of days because of a non-heated detached garage and a cold climate (as of right now). Thankfully this is a second car, and I can use our other car when this one is charging. Would I hurt the battery if I don't charge it to 100% every time, meaning charge it less, but more frequently? It certainly would be more convenient for me, but I don't want to worry about the long-term effects on the battery. Also, from what I've read about EVs you shouldn't let the battery get under 20%. I understand MINI has tweaked the software a bit when it comes to battery life/range. Is a 20% reading truly saying I have only 20% power left, or is it technically more? I'm still working on alleviating my range anxiety, and would really like to know how scared I need to be if my car is reading under 20% power. Thank you for the informative and interesting content!

    Hi Catie, I've read many of the same things as you. I want to stress I am not an electrical engineer, but generally speaking, it's my understanding that most automotive EV batteries are pretty happy between roughly between 60 and 90% state of charge. In terms of frequent Level 1 charging, that's no problem. The main thing to do is try to avoid leaving your battery in a depleted state of charge for any significant length of time. Obviously with their limited range, we're all going to run our Minis' batteries to a low state of charge occasionally. Just try to get it plugged back in as soon as you can and don't sweat it. Instead, enjoy the ride.

  • @fliacragno

    @fliacragno

    Don't worry about battery degradation when doing short charges. Lithium-Ion batteries cycles are considered as full cycles. If you charge it from 0 to 100% it's considered 1 cycle. If you charge it 20% 5 times, it's also considered 1 cycle. With the exception that if you do that within the 20-80% charge of the battery, you'll be stressing the battery much less. So you'll be degrading the battery much less. Also, the slower you charge it (level 1) the healthier it is for the battery. Try to avoid level 3 charging as much as possible. Do it only on longer trips. The best thing is to charge your car at night at home with your level 1 charger. An overnight charge on a level 1 charger should give add 40-50 miles of range and that's usually more than enough for your daily driving. If it's not, maybe this car is not for you. You might need to get a 200+ mile electric car.

    Thank you! I really appreciate the information and it does make me feel much better about my situation. Thankfully this is a second, run-about-town car. Now I'm not so paranoid about killing the battery with charging it too often, I'll be more comfortable using it more.

    Yes, the range definitely won't work for some people. We're a two car family so the Mini is perfect for us. But if we're going on a road trip of more than 150 or so miles away we take the other car to avoid the additional charging stops the Mini requires on long distance travel.
