2022 Mini Cooper SE - In Focus: Active Cruise & Nappa Heated Leather

Thanks for tuning in! In this video I take a close up look at the following features on the full electric 2022 Mini Cooper SE:
-- Nappa Leather Steering Wheel (heated)
-- Piano Black Control Buttons
-- Active Cruise Control (including HUD display)
-- Speed Limiter function
CLARIFICATION: Around 2:50 I talk about active cruise bringing the Mini to a stop and starting again on its own. If the car comes to a complete stop, you must tap the accelerator to wake it back up. It will not start forward on its own.
EDIT 09.28.21: Overall, I find the active cruise system to be less than great - it is not unusual for the system to lose tracking and turn off once on every lengthy trip I take, depending on the lighting situation. This requires me to do a long press on the follow distance button to enable regular cruise control.
EDIT 02.24.22: The ACC IS JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH, folks. It loses tracking quite often and is just frustrating. I cannot recommend paying extra money to get the ACC system which frequently loses its way and forces you to push extra buttons to revert to regular cruise control. Save your money in this area.

    This video was very helpful in understanding the Cruise control settings. I was concerned when I couldn't activate the cruise control the other day, but now I think I know why. I will try using cruise control alone next time the error occurs again. Great video, I'm subscribed to watch more of this!

    I have the same leather on my steering wheel and it is great. It was part of the "MINI Yours" package. It's a much nicer, softer leather than the JCW wheel. I am not a fan of the new piano black buttons as they show fingerprints too easily. Very thorough review of the driving aids! Good job!

    I've thought the AAC only works between 30-140. Does this mean i can use it in stop and go traffic too?

  • @minise-focus

    @minise-focus

    @@gudelauneee Page 174 of the manual gives more detail. The system is functional at speeds beginning approx. 20 mph / 30 kph - the system can also be activated when stationary - the max speed it can be set is 85 mph / 140 kph. If a detected vehicle comes to a full stop in front of you, the Mini can start forward again on its own if the car is only stopped momentarily. Otherwise, the Mini remains stopped and you have to tap the accelerator to resume ACC follow distance. I do not use the system in stop and go traffic because its lack of radar (camera only) causes it to lose tracking too often for me to feel comfortable in that situation.

    I own a 2022 Countryman S with the Iconic package and all Mini Yours interior upgrades and I love it! But, I agree, the buttons on the steering feel cheap. I prefer the old button my 2016 F56 had.

    I also find myself activating the Speed Limiter function by mistake when trying to adjust the ACC. That would happen less often if the buttons were individual cutouts vs the 'one plastic panel' design.

    We also own a 2022 Countryman Cooper SE Hybrid, and are having the exact same problems with sun strike de activating the ACC, it has happened at least a dozen or more times, our local Mini Dealer has been useless insisting the Sun would not affect the ACC

    You are not alone. Many SE drivers report problems with ACC cutting out in varying light situation, but largely when the sun is shining directly on the camera. It happened to me just yesterday morning, driving toward the sun in early morning, no clouds.

    Yes - hitting the down arrow button on the right hand side of the wheel and then the center OK button will skip forward, and the up arrow and OK skips back. This is on Apple CarPlay. I have not tried it via Bluetooth-only audio.

    Thanks for the video. how smooth do you find the ACC? A few situations; 1) If someone pulls in front of you traveling down the highway, how aggressive is the braking? 2) In traffic, at the closest setting, how much of a gap does the mini leave? i.e. does it leave a big enough gap that people are constantly pulling in front of you? 3) Have you found any situations where you turn it off because it's a hassle? Thanks a bunch!

  • @minise-focus

    @minise-focus

    (1) I have not yet been cut off on the highway with ACC yet. But I find the braking, in general, to be smooth. The ACC brakes later than I would, but I grip the wheel tighter, hover my foot over the brake pedal, and let ACC do its thing. It has not yet failed to stop. (2) As with other ACC I have used, at the closest follow distance, there is a gap that lets other drivers feel free to cut in. I will tap the accelerator to close the gap a bit if I feel like another driver is being obnoxious. The ACC remains active if you manually close the gap a bit, and then it slows down to open the gap back up with you let off the accelerator. (3) I do not find the ACC a hassle, but, as mentioned in the video, there have now been numerous occasions where the sunlight and shadows cause it to be disabled, forcing me to switch to regular cruise with a long press of a follow distance button.

    @@joshseal2000 Be aware - if you are ordering a 2022 SE or find one in stock (in larger markets), there have been manufacturing shortages, causing the Harmon Kardon stereo to be left out of the SE, regardless of trim ordered. Some reports of some parking sensors also being left out due to shortages. Just research carefully the specific car you might evaluate. I was lucky and had mine made before the shortages.

    Just yesterday, at highway speed, a car cut me off with about a long car-length in front of me. The ACC took it in stride, slowly easing me back to a normal follow distance. So there was no abrupt reaction from the cruise control. I was pleased with how it handled it.

    @@joshseal2000 I believe this to be the same camera system in my BMW i3, I personally don't like it at all. As mentioned, it will turn off when in certain lighting conditions, it doesn't like when the sun begins to set, mine refuses to work at this point, yes it aggressively slows when someone pulls in front of you on highway. This shouldn't be a camera-based system, I find it quite dangerous at times. I don't use unless low traffic on long trip. Again, I'm assuming this is the same system as i3.

    It’s such a shame that my LCI 1 2019 didn’t come with adaptive cruise control with stop and go. BMW has been using the technology since 2006 where it will actually stop itself, however the 2014 F56 with adaptive cruise control cuts off at like 21 mph or something. My 2003 Infiniti M45 had that way back in the day. Mini should have incorporated it much sooner, my car was $38,000 as tested without the drivers assistance package, Yet a 2017 Prius came standard with adaptive cruise control with stop and go. You can retrofit some Mini Cooper F56’s that already have adaptive cruise control and certain packages And code them to incorporate stop and go however.

    The SE has an optional speed limiter setting which prevents going over whatever speed you have set manually. It is a separate button from the cruise control which you would have to turn on each time you start the SE (I don't use it). I am not aware of anything tied to the posted speed limit.
