As an owner of this car for a little under a year, here are my quick takes: The Good - If you love Minis and their go-kart handling, this model is even more fun on the twisties. It has a near 50/50 weight distro. The instant torque at any speed is amazing. I've owned several Minis in the past, this has been the most fun to drive of all. One pedal driving is actually fun on back roads and works well in traffic as well. The Bad - If you live in or near a city, the range isn't a big deal. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone with a significant commute. The backseats are basically a joke. I wish I could take them out and add a battery pack for extended range. The Others - If it gets cold in your zip code for the winter, you will see a drop in range. Again, if you live in a city, not a big deal, but something you need to plan for if you have long commutes. You can program the Acoustic Pedestrian UFO sound to toggle on/off with a button with the Bimmercode app. I personally like the UFO sound mixed with the faint high pitched electric motor sound. If this had a convertible top option, it would be my perfect car. Overall, I love this niche car but I recognize it's not for everyone. I'm fine with that.

My first winter in Canada with this car. The range drops about 40% during cold days if you use steering wheel heating, seat heating, etc. I expected less drop in range since it does have a heat pump, but nope...
Mini is an ideal car to convert to electric but they really phoned this in. Once they do something proper in terms of range I think it would be a slam dunk.

Hopefully with the new from ground up EV they are working on with a Chinese brand (Great wall motors i think) they should be able get a few more batteries in and more range. I've owned mine for 1.5 years and nearly 12k miles...fantastic daily driver. As you note, the car's biggest downfall is a lack of battery warming when preconditioning the cabin. I've autocrossed mine a ton and it's really great with 200TW sticky rubber. It's really fun in the canyons and because of the smaller battery it charges quickly on a 50kW DC Fast Charger. The understeer you note is likely due to the winter tires. On summer rubber or even my Michelin AS4s it's not a problem. The range is not the issue most try to make of it. The worst I see in winter is 3-3.5 mi/kWh unless driving into the mountains where I'll get 2-2.5 mi/kWh going up and well over 5 mi/kWh coming down. Leaving TC on is actually best since it's not that intrusive and the electric motor makes it react very quickly and only as much as needed. My overall average is probably 3.8-4.2 mi/kWh which nets 110-120 miles of real range. Even on Level 2 home charging it charges very quickly, so in between trips you can top up if needed.

Are they expensive to maintain? Do they break down a lot?
I have a 2022 Chili Red Mini Cooper SE, my daily commute is 9 miles each way and I get to charge at work for free, so it's perfect for me. A lot of people don't get the 100-mile range, but one benefit of that is the smaller, lighter battery. The car still feels really solid and a bit weighed down, but not as much as an EV that has a 240 mile range like a Kona or a Soul, or even a Tesla. It's still really nimble and fun, especially driving around the city. It's a niche car but if it works for you, like it does for me, it's amazing!

Sure, the range is small compared to a Model 3 and newer (and larger) EVs coming out right now, but this car is designed for a specific type of commuter. I ordered one because I live less than 5 miles from work in Northern Michigan -- so 10-mile round trip. If I want to go out for a date night and drive up and down the peninsulas, I can easily do that without worrying about taking it to zero. Now, if I need to commute 35-50 miles one way with no option to charge at work, this probably isn't for you. Also, we have a second car that's gas (soon to be replaced with an electric!) that's our larger family car for longer trips. I've always been a big fan of MINI and feel in a few years, this range will be at least doubeld

I actually don't mind the sounds it makes when powering on or off. Driving a 330e, it's a tad annoying having to look at the gauge cluster to know whether the car is on or off. I see this being useful for someone new to EVs.

Love the grey cloth seats! This option wasn’t available in the 2021 version, only black leatherette or genuine leather [$]. I wonder if this stock sound system is on par with the $750 [CAD] Harman-Kardon option Mini used to offer pre-pandemic? I was a bit baffled by the cold weather battery issue at only 17 F° or - 8 C°, especially for a liquid-cooled Li-Ion battery pack. I guess the car was outside for a long time without being connected to an outlet? Anyway, thks for this review of the 2022 model. Probably my nxt car. 👍
Mini is the best
Thanks! I drive about 2500 miles per year in city only - slowly, no expressways, no passengers. If the safety rating on this is high, sounds good.
Would love one of these, but it would need next-gen batteries with around 230-250 miles of range for me to take the plunge. Gotta have enough in reserve for a winter round trip up to Denver from the Springs.
Hi Topher, could you do a 2022 Q3 Premium Plus please?
When doing these videos, do you have a go pro camera on your head? Just curious
Would this be good for a new driver and I’m 6’3 so would I be able to fit?
I have a 2015 Smart EV and except for the looks is very similar to the Mini SE. Above 70 degrees F. I am able to get 80 miles using 80% of the battery pack. Yes cold weather cuts into range. My only complaint is the regin breaking is low. If it was as sexy looking as the Mini Cooper I would be content. Unfortunately I can not fix the looks. Driving it around town is great. I love electric.

I have had the MINI SE 3 months and I have not had an issue with range. Unless you driving 90 miles in one direction and coming back another 90 miles home yes then this is not for you. Otherwise I doubt that there are many people doing this. So this vehicle range is not as bad as everyone would like to to assume it is.

No, run flat tyres are fitted.
the Mini Electric is the cheapest electric car available in Canada, and the 242km-rated range is pretty good. But 104km @ -8*C for 93% charge is pretty terrible. I would love to consider this thing, even if it would be tight in the back with the kiddos, but in the winter we routinely see -20*C, and -30*C isn't rare either. I'd be pretty pissed if I could barely make it to work & back on a single change. I wonder if it's being ultra conservative and factors for cabin heating (which I don't use anyway), defrost, heated seats (my bum fat's enough), or if that range improves once the battery heats up in normal driving. Anyway, this is why I think electric cars would be such versatile little machines should they have small range extenders. I cringe at the extra weight, but I'd trade some battery size for one...then again, that's what a PHEV is for. But then...weight...dahhh. Anyway, great review, as always.

@Ben.Royals
2 жыл бұрын
Different range testing as in the UK we use the WLTP range which has a higher priority on city driving, as thats what we do most. In the US the EPA test prioritises more highway driving as that is usually a big part of peoples commutes. In the city driving scenario you are more likely to benefit largely from lower speeds and the regenerative breaking hence the higher range rating.
Waiting for 350 Km.for one charge.
The startup sounds like your starting up a console for little kids
The price is now over $34K which is too much for an EV so small with limited range. A Leaf plus does over 200 and others do more for the same or just a bit more.
I hardly ever say this, but Mini is actually one of the few automakers that I think should just dive full-on into the EV game ASAP. Makes a lot of sense for the small, athletic cars they offer, and could provide an opportunity to breathe new life into some of their more niche models like the convertible and the Clubman. Yes, the stickshifts and gas engines would be missed, but I still think it’d be the right move. Provided they can get the range/charging times improved, of course.
@ARCNA442

The average compact/subcompact car sells for around $20k. This sells for $30k, which is cheap for an EV. Going full EV with MINI would mean largely abandoning their current customer base and instead aiming for more of a luxury second car market segment.
@williamlong2682

@@ARCNA442 Mini’s already kinda moved upmarket, though, into this whole premium-but-not-quite-luxury netherworld where automakers like Acura and Mazda are. If they could keep prices reasonably comparable to their existing gas models and make the range more competitive, I could see a lot of current owners making the switch. And models like the 2 door Cooper and Convertible are so small anyway that they already lend themselves well to being second cars.

Jesus christ. 110mile range is just plain unacceptable, I don't see this selling at all here. Possibly makes a bit more sense for the UK which is much more condensed, but not being able to drive 55 miles in a direction and back is a dealbreaker. Maybe that range would work if it was actually designed to be a second/weekend car. Nobody buys a Mini as a weekend car. Its 0-60 is 6 seconds as well which is also hilarious. @@Ben.Royals I'm talking about the US because this video's in the US, and is discussing the US market version of the car. Manufacturers pay an arm and a leg to sell cars in each country, and I really doubt they'll make any money selling this here. My daily commute is around 45 miles one way, and so is plenty of other folks where I live (semi rural/suburban Michigan, decently far away from the big cities that most people work in.) Not even including the road trips that you just could never have if this was your only car. That 0-60 is pathetic for a car that's intended to be "sporty" because the primary benefit of having an electric motor is fast acceleration. Since EV taxes are becoming more of a thing worldwide (governments don't want you to just stop paying fuel tax when you switch to an EV haha) there's not much of a compelling reason to get one over a regular Mini, since the battery is (not all that much, but significantly) heavier than an ICE engine. That's why it's a bit disappointing that they just took an existing ICE chassis and slapped a battery on the bottom. I always thought Minis were cool in general, totally valid to like this particular model but it really just doesn't make much sense to be sold here. Maybe I'm also just a bit toxic that we get this because we don't get stuff like the GR Yaris LOL
