    Bought a pair of dynastar m-free 99’s this fall after agonizing over my decision all summer. Couldn’t be more stoked on them, I actually cannot believe how much fun they are. They absolutely blew my mind in soft snow conditions, and carved drastically better than I expected them to. They absolutely rip, would definitely recommend based on my experience. 6’2” 180lbs skiing the 179 for reference.

    You guys rock! My Fav Ski KZread Channel along with Deb Armstrong and what a surprise seeing you coming down Mt Hood together on her channel! But I digress. Last year I demoed Mantra, Bonafine 97 and Elan Ripstick 96. The Bonafide was my favorite and I ended up buying it for its power and stability! I love to rip groomers and carve the heck out of them but still have a ski with a minimum of versatility for the occasional powder days. 1 Ski quiver for a resort - on-piste skier. I'm 6.6 -215lb athletic fellow and I definitely sized it down. 189cm was the obvious length choice for me but the agility of the shorter 183 without giving up anything in power and stability made me re-think the length. Not a beginner skier. I'd say I'm advanced level and what I love about this pair is that they are also a training tool. Your technique needs to be spot on and if I get lazy on them or slightly on my heels the feedback is immediate. If you are on top of them ... man they are SO FUN!

    Hi Riccardo! Thanks! It was a blast skiing with Deb at Mt Hood. We did a day of testing together, then our adventure to the summit, which you saw on her channel. I have a lot more to share from that trip when the time comes! We're also planning on meeting with her at least once this upcoming season to film some videos together. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Bonafide! I think others will find it useful too. Sometimes it can be hard to justify downsizing when you're an advanced/expert level skier, but the Bonafide is certainly one that's worth considering in a shorter length than what you typically ski. Have a fantastic season!

    I've had the Mindbender 99 ti their release, and they are RAD. In the 170, they're awesome in the bumps, trees, or wide open carves. I picked up a pair of the Bentchetler 100, 180 last year with some G3 Zed bindings and they are ALSO rad. They float, slash, switch, and rip thru turns! Cool to see both of these skis are basically unchanged. Couldn't give either of them a high enough recommendation. Mostly Front Range skiing, 5'9", 160#, 90% off-piste.

    Even though those 2 skis only have a 1 mm difference in waist width, that's a good example of how you can have complementary skis in the same width. Both are a ton of fun for different reasons. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I know others appreciate it as well.

    Hey! Thanks a lot for the review - I've watched your mid 90's and 100MM all mountain ski comparisons over and over, as well as the individual ski reviews and have narrowed it down to a few: I'm 165lb 5'10''. I primarily ski out west but occasionally make trips to VT/NH. Looking to do some trips to Canada or the Alps next year. I'm looking for one ski that does it all - I primarily spend my time on blacks/trees but would also like to elevate my experience in the park doing 180's and some box slides landing switch. I want my ski to hold an edge fairly well, while being able to maneuver through the trees easily. I've skied everything from the Elan Ripstick, to the Armada ARV's, and Mind benders, and find them all to be very fun. The Bent Chetler 100s seemed to be too unstable for my liking. After watching your videos, I have narrowed down to the following four: Dynastar M -Free 99 at 179 Black Crows Camox 97 at 174 or 180 or the Fischer Ranger 94 (92 at 177) Liberty Origin 96 at 176/182 My boots are the Lange RX 100 LV GW. Hoping to get your opinion on what best suits my need + some recommendations on bindings. Thank you, Chris

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey! So, I certainly wouldn't rule out the Bent 100 if I were you. It has a surprising amount of edge grip, and kind of matches your description perfectly. Very agile in the trees, good in the park, and holds an edge reasonably well. M-Free 99 doesn't have better edge grip in my opinion because of the longer tip and tail rocker. The construction underfoot is solid, but I would say that and the Bent Chetler 100 and M-Free 99 have very similar edge grip. If you wanted to boost that a little bit, the Camox does feel stronger than both of them. Ranger 94 has more grip, but feels very light, so maybe won't come across as more stable... That depends mostly on skiing style. Origin 96 is similar to the Camox, but a little more energetic and snappy rather than smooth and damp. For length, I would stay as close to 180 cm as possible. 179 M-Free, 180 Bent 100, 180 Camox, 177 Ranger 94, or 182 Origin 96. Hope that helps!

    Awesome reviews guys and a fav catagory for many. I've owned the 2gen MX98 (remake of the orgininal) FX95hp, MX99 and haven't tried the new MX98 which was supposed to be a touch more accessible than the MX99 that had metal and carbon. All the MX98/99's have been incredibly versitile IMHO for a good technical skier. For Whistler or other big mountains between dumps or after a small snowfall or in spring when AM is hard and fast and PM is wet and heavy they just haul ass and work so damn well Much more rewarding than most stuff in this catagory. Ya you gotta show up and icy east coast bumps not soo much but everything else - WOW.

    Thanks for the wide variety of reviews in one video. I hunting for some new skis, currently rocking the old Rossi Bandit B2s! My kids are off in college and I'm skiing solo again. My typical days here in the Northwest US. I usually just roll of the lift and don't stop until I hit the lift line at the bottom (if there is one on a weekday ;-). I'm an advanced skier (6'2 @ 195lb). If there is some powder I'll hunt it down but usually by lunch it's turning into some nice soft moguls which I'm happy to spend my afternoon bombing through. I'll cruise through the trees if there's some soft snow but if we're in between snow storms I'll just race down the groomers and occasionally through moguls if they're not rock hard. I hate skidding around on the ice so a ski that can hold it's edge is important. Which ski sounds best? Enforcer 100 is where I was leaning listening to your review but what do you suggest?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    You sound like an Enforcer 100 skier to me. If you're looking for something a bit friendlier, I'd take a look at the Black Crows Camox or the Dynastar M-Pro 99, but the Enforcer is a great ski that has a ton of upside!

    Good people of SE. Your reviews are awesome - thank you so much. We need to get you established in Europe, there's no-one like you guys over here. Anyway, I was just in the process of deciding between some Fischer 102 FR's, Blizzard Rustler 10's or Atomic Bent Chettler 100's. I've now added the Rossignol Blackops Holyshreds to this list! I currently have some fat BC 120's for powder days and some Line Sir Francis Bacon's for everything else. I'm an advanced skiier, spending about 2/3 of my time on piste (charging hard, playing around with butters, hitting side hits, occasional park and moguls) and 1/3 off piste. Looking for a new one-ski quiver for Alpine conditions. I'm 6'1" and 200lbs. I think I'm leaning towards the Rossies currently but feel I might sit in between lengths - 182 feeling a bit short, 192 a bit long? I want something that's playful but really holds an edge at high speed. Would appreciate your thoughts again!! Thank you guys, keep up the good work ....

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, Peter! I love the Holyshred because it feels like a fun twin tip, but really has no weaknesses. I don't think 192 is too long, especially if you prefer slightly longer skis, while the 182, you may be leaving some performance on the table. I'd say it's the most well-rounded ski on your list. Have fun! SE

    Great review! These are great to watch. Seeking some advice here... I ski mainly the northeast, most frequently at Sugarloaf or Sunday River with the infrequent Colorado trip. I'm looking for a ski that can handle several inches of natural snow fine after a big storm, like Brackett Basin at Sloaf for example, but also can handle steep groomers no problem. I like to bounce in and out of trees so maneuverability is pretty important to me. However, I definitely want to have a little bit of float to be able to duck in the woods when we get a sizeable storm. I don't go in the park often, but will hit most side hits I see. I'd say I'm 60% steep groomers and 40% glades. I've been looking at the 2021 QST 99, the 2022 QST 98, the Rustler 9, and the Black Ops Escaper. Certainly open to other suggestions as well. Any thoughts? Thanks again for the great video. The reviews are super helpful

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    We loved the new QST 98 this past year. It's got more rocker and taper than the Rustler or Escaper, making it a better floater. It's still not too shabby on the groomers, but not quite as grippy as the Rustler. I think the escaper is super-fun, but it's light, so it's not as stable as the heavier Rustler/QST's. I'd narrow focus to the Rustler and QST 98, and then decide if you want more grip or float--it sounds to me like grip, in which case the Rustler is a fantastic option.

    Guys your reviews are amazing! Thank you so much for putting in the effort. Was wondering if you can give me some advice. I ski mostly trees, bumps, and all sorts of other uneven terrain, so prefer maneuverable playful skis that can still hold their own on groomers. I am east coast but go out west at least twice a year. Currently ski Solomon Q98 but they are beat to hell and started delaminating so time for a change. Need a new one ski quiver. I would prefer something more maneuverable in tight trees, easier to turn on moguls, and better in powder and off piste. Based on your reviews, thinking about dps wailer alchemist 100, dynastar m.pro 99, and bent chetler 100, and Salomon QST but there are so many good choices out there hard to finalize the decision. Any recommendations? I am 5’9, 190 lbs, advanced skier.

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello! Bent Chetler 100 and QST 98 both feel like great choices. Wailer Alchemist 100 could work too. I'd rule out the M-Pro 99 as I don't expect you'll find that ski more maneuverable in tight spots than your Q98. The simplest, safest thing feels like getting a QST 98. It's basically the modern version of the ski that you have right now and in general has been improved in all the areas you're focusing on. Easier to turn, quicker in tight spots, better in powder, better in off-piste terrain in general. That would be my recommendation.

    Thank you so much for the reviews! As someone who researches a lot before a big purchase they are super helpful! I demoed the Rossignol Holyshred 182 last week and had a blast on them and I am considering getting a pair as a one ski quiver for the next few seasons. I am spending most of my time on the east coast this year, but likely moving to the PNW next year. I am a 5'10 185lb progressing intermediate/advanced skier who mostly skis on groomed but am looking to gain more confidence off-piste/ in trees this season. I was initially looking at lengths in the 170s since I am more of an intermediate than an advanced skier, but I had so much fun on these. Is there any downside to going longer for me? Could you recommend any similar skis you'd recommend trying before pulling the trigger on these?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    Your welcome! I'm not going to talk you out of going longer or shorter--your experience speaks volumes. The longer will be heavier and more cumbersome, while shorter can be twitchy. It sounds like you've found a good length in that ski! I'd also check out the Black Crows Camox and the Dynastar M-Free 99 for fellow wider twins.

    They did make the new version a little more playful, but it's closer to the M5 than it is different. Enforcer 100s are a common choice for people looking for something similar, but a little more playful. It's not as precise, but still powerful. The new Maverick 100 Ti would be another good one to consider. Definitely in that same conversation. Hope that helps!

  • @SkiEssentials

    Yes, absolutely. Mindbender 99 basically falls right in between those two skis in terms of playfulness and power. Enforcer 100 does too, in my opinion, but I think it leans more towards the Bonafide side of things rather than the Declivity 102 side.

    Hey thank you so much for all the information and reviews, always super helpful!! Right now I’m deciding between the Atomic Bent and Fischer Ranger, and Ik they are pretty different skis, but I’m only going to have 1 ski in my quiver, and I’m having a thought time deciding. I definitely spend a lot of time on groomers, and love just ripping down groomers at high speeds, but Im doing more free ride and in the trees and bumps and off trail and just ripping all around the mountain and love doing that, and the atomic seems more of a more rounded ski for that. The only thing that’s really kinda holding me back is that can the atomic preform well on groomers and carve at least pretty well? I also love powder skiing and travel out west a good bit. What do you think? I’m a pretty advanced skier, 6’1 175

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, Andrew! The Bent is great, but doesn't quite have the carving ability of any of the Ranger skis. The Bent 90 is quite flexible in the tips and tails, so you have to be ready for the thing to fold on you if you put it in the wrong place at the wrong time. I love my 90 for bumps and trees. I think if you're looking for something substantial, the Ranger is a better choice. SE

    Pretty similar skis overall, although the Reckoner has a softer flex pattern, especially in the tips and tails. Lower camber height and a softer flex makes it more smeary, buttery, surfy, etc. There's more energy and responsiveness in the Bent Chetler thanks to a snappy, slightly stiffer flex pattern. Not as loose in soft snow, but more precise overall. They're both a ton of fun to ski.

    Hey fella’s, first of all, thank you for all the hard work you do! you help a lot of people make informed decisions on what I would say are fairly expensive investments. So in saying that I would love for you guys to recommend a ski for me, I’m looking for the closest ski possible to the Nortica 100 Enforcer but with a tail turned up just enough to ride in switch, something that has the power, edge to edge speed, dampness and all the qualities and feel of the enforcer 100 but with the ability to also go down the hill backwards, I know there is the 104 free but 104 is like a powder ski for me in Australia, looking for something around the mid 90’s to 100 range?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Stephen! I wouldn't completely rule out the Enforcer 104 if I were you. There's not a huge difference in feel between 100 and 104 in terms of edge to edge quickness and stuff like that. That said, if you want to go narrower, there's the Ranger 102 from Fischer that often coms up in comparison to the Enforcer 104. The Rossignol BLACKOPS Holyshred also comes to mind. That's 98 mm underfoot and has a similar blend of stability and playfulness as the Enforcer 104, just narrower. Take a look at those and don't hesitate to reach out again if you have more questions.

    Hey Fellas/SE - another awesome and comprehensive review, super helpful! Looking for a little direction on which pair to seriously consider. I've been mostly focused on the QST 98s and the Mindbender 99Ti, and maybe thinking about one of the Dynastars in the lineup. I'm 5'9" 175/180 lbs, predominantly northeast skier with the 1-2 trips a year out west. I would call my self an advanced intermediate skier and a low level expert trying to nudge myself that extra bit to consider a confident expert. On the east, it's predominantly groomers, but when west, I would say 60/40 groomers to glades. Looking for something that can carve well, but then has that maneuverability and playfulness when in the trees. Any thoughts? And can you also offer a size recommendation on whichever model you point toward? Thanks for all the help! ps. Would your answer change if I were looking at 2021 models to save some money?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello! Those skis are going to feel different, mostly because of their shape. My impression is that the QST 98 is probably a better choice for you. When it comes to maneuverability and playfulness in the trees, the QST is definitely better. It's not super light, but feels lighter on your feet. More agile, more maneuverable, more forgiving. The Mindbender 99 is a better carving ski, especially at higher speeds, but the QST still carves reasonably well. It sounds to me that the performance of the QST would be more beneficial for your current ability and skiing style. Also better in deep snow if you happen to get a good powder day. For length, I'm about your size, and I preferred the 183 cm length. That might seem long, but the rocker profile of the QST makes it ski kinda short, or at least is very manageable in longer lenths. My answer wouldn't actually change with 2021 models. If you can find a deal on a QST 99, that would be an excellent choice too.

    Another great review, as always. I´m thinking about going to some Bent Chetlers, coming from my Rustler 10, because I want more playfulness but still being able to go fast on compact snow. I´m 175 cm tall, intermediate level, which size would you recommend, the 172cm or the 180 cm? I wish they had something in-between, as my Rusterls are 180 and I feel it just a bit too long.

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    It's a different feel than the Rustler, but length is a lot more about preference than stats. If you're intermediate and wanting playfulness, I say the 172 is a good choice.

    Hey guys thanks so much for these amazing video's they helped me decide I wanted a set of Salomon QST 98's, I would say I'm an intermediate skier that enjoys the bowls at the top of most resorts and haven't really ventured off backcountry...yet. I enjoy the chunky snow the upper mountains typically offer, and skick to blue and black's but feel intimidated in the double blacks at this point ( I'm a lifelong boarder switching back to skiing after 18 years). I ended up getting the 183 QST 98's as that is what is recommended for a guy my size (6'1" - 220 pounds) in most skis. My question to you is everything I see says to go longer with the QST 98's because they ski shorter, should I have gone with the 189"s? will it make that much of difference to me?

    I think you'll be fine with the 183 based on your ability and application. A skier similar in size who's expert, aggressive, experienced, and knows they prefer longer skis will likely gravitate to the 189, but that doesn't quite sound like you. I think 183 is a good choice. Have fun! SE

    Hi guys, thank you for an amazing review! Can you please compare QST 98 vs Rossi Holyshred? I would like to have it as an allmountain/occasional touring setup, so planning to mount some hybrid binding (Shift or Duke PT) on them. Do you think it would be reasonable? Thank you for your answer!

    Sure! Both are on the heavy side for touring, but with a Duke on them, you're getting true alpine performance on the downhills. Great for resort skiing for sure, but definitely on the heavy side for uphill skiing. We were very impressed with the QST 98 this past year--super fun and playful while still holding a darn good edge on the groomers. A better floater than the width indicates due to the rocker, and a quick turner with a shorter-than-average radius. Holyshred is a strong, damp, and versatile ski that's perfect for knocking around the mountain in any and all conditions and terrain. Not the best carver, not the best floater, but really, really well-rounded.

I can't decide.. BC100, CT2. 0, PRODIGY 2/3 seem like a good choice but lately i discovered the black crow minus cor. You guys did a pretty good review but idk if it will fit. So which onr would you recommend (also for nice turns on groomers)

    Hard to do much better than the Bent Chetler 100 for that application. The Mirus Cor is super fun, but does have some limitations too. Not the best in deep snow and not the most stability at speed. It loves to cruise around and play at moderate speeds, so I wouldn't completely rule it out, but I'd also think about whether you need more stability or more float. The Bent Chetler feels like it checks just about all your boxes. From Faction, I'd probably go Prodigy. I like skiing the CT skis, but find some limitations there too, mostly in regards to stability. More versatile than the Mirus Cor, but not as well-rounded as the BC 100.

    If I were to get one, I'd take the Justis hands down. I don't think it'd be nearly as accessible in the park, but if that's a minority of your day, then maybe you can live with that downgrade in performance. Overall, though, the Justis is about as complete of a high-performance ski as you're going to get.

    Both good skis for that application. I don't think you'd be disappointed with either ski. That said, the Revolt 104 will give you more float and in general better performance in deeper snow, but the Bent Chetler is more responsive, quicker, and a little better in the park.

    Hi guys - thanks so much for your reviews, always my go to for detailed and honest advice! I am looking to buy a new pair of all mountain twin tips but will not be able to trial any so am trying to do my research on here to make the best decision. I ski mainly in the Alps and am looking for a ski that carves and handles the groomers well, but is good at exploring the mountain, in between pistes and popping of jumps. Also something that can handle the odd powder day respectively. I no longer ski the park as much but will pop in occasionaly and like to ski switch sometimes also. I am 6ft and 75kgs so after watching your reviews it sounds like the Poachers (not a fan of the graphic!), Bent Chetler 100s, ARV96s or BC Camox may suit - any thoughts on what you think would be a good ski (assuming no price range issues) and at what length? Thanks so much!!

    Hi John! Lots of good options for you. Bent Chetler 100 is a popular choice for that application. Camox as well. Poachers and ARV 96 lean a little more towards the park side of the spectrum rather than the all-mountain side. They would work, but I wonder if maybe you'd prefer something a little stronger. Nordica has a cool new ski for 2023, the Unleashed 98. They took the Soul Rider and tweaked it a little bit, changing the shape and adding some metal. Really good ski for what you're looking to do, so another good one to consider. For length, I would stick right around 180 cm. Hope that helps!

    Hey Andrew! Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I think at your size, it makes sense going with the more stable skis in that grouping. Poacher 96 and Revolt 104 stand out to me, which gives you two nice widths to choose from. Both of those skis have an awesome blend of stability at speed and playfulness and both will be supportive of your size. Those would be my recommendations, although realistically I'm sure you'd have fun on any of those skis.

    Hi guys, thank you for your amazing reviews! I am planning to buy skis this year and I would really use your advice. I am 6'3 and 77kg and I would say I am an advanced (but not expert) skier, skiing the Alps mostly. I used to ride Elan SL/SLX and Amphibio 14, and last year I had a chance to test Armada ARV and Declivity, where I preferred the latter. I got a hold of (used) Atomic GS, so I am now looking to complement this ski with an all-mountain ski that would allow me to explore 'offroad' (and hit the park occasionally) while maintaining carving performance. I was thinking in the direction of Enforcer (not sure which width) but since I have a GS race ski, I thought that maybe a more playful ski might be a better addition. I would be very thankful if you could give me some advice here.

    If park and/or freestyle is any part of your repertoire, and you like the Enforcer, I'd look to the 104 Free. It's sturdy on the groomers, floaty in the fresh, and even has a twin tipped shape for more playful skiing. Declivity is great, but not quite as surfy as the 104 Enforcer. Black Crows Justis should also be right there on the list.

    Hey guys! Very informative video. I am a ski instructor in Whistler, but originally from the east coast of Canada so I grew up skiing on piste/icier conditions. I'd say I'm an advanced skier and I'm around 5'11/145 pounds. I am looking for an all-mountain ski that I can use to teach and ride on during my off times, where I'll be able to carve with good technique but something that I can still have fun on off-piste and that will give me float in powder. I've demoed the K2 mindbender 106 which were super fun in powder, but I found a bit too wide since im looking to only buy one set of skis this winter. I also demoed the bonafide 97, which seemed a bit too stiff and not playful enough for the conditions in whistler. Currently the top three skis im interested in are the nordica enforcer 100, salmon QST 98, and the atomic maverick 100, but im open to other suggestions! Thanks so much for the help!

    Thanks, Julia! We were very impressed with the QST 98 this past year. We've always enjoyed the Enforcer 100 and had a blast on the Maverick, but the QST stood out as a strong performer with a ton of versatility. It's not the hard-charger that the 100's are, but for what it can do, it carves just fine, especially with the shorter turn radius that the new skis employ. If you're looking for the more playful option, I'd go that route. The other skis are still quite stiff, although the Maverick is on the lighter side for how beefy it is. I don't think you'd benefit much from the Santa Ana, as the shaping is still pretty much the same. I'd lean to the QST, with the Enforcer as a close second. Also check out the Black Crows Justis--one of those skis that everyone liked in our testing.

    Hello! Just based on your overall preference for groomers, I think the Maverick is the way to go. That ski is still versatile too, so it's not like you can't take it off trail, in fact it does quite well off trail, but it also will give you the smoothest performance on a groomer and more responsiveness than the other two skis. Hope that helps!

    How would you compare the QST 98 to the Fischer Ranger 102 FR? Sounds like both have good deep snow performance but how would you compare their ability to hold an edge on groomers, plow through afternoon crud, and overall playfulness?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Peter! Somewhat similar overall. In a lot of ways, they accomplish the same thing, but feel different doing so. The Ranger feels more precise. More torsional stiffness in the tips and tails. Slightly better edge grip, and a more responsive feel. The QST feels looser, especially in how easy it is to pivot and smear. It's not as precise as the Ranger, but in some ways it's smoother in how it maneuvers through tight terrain. So, edge hold on groomers I'd give to the Ranger. Afternoon crud is basically a wash between the two, they can handle that. Overall playfulness? I think some skiers would find the QST more playful because of the long rocker profile. Super easy for butters, slashes, etc. Some skiers might find the Ranger more playful because of its quickness, but I think most skiers would give it to the QST for overall playfulness. Hope that helps!

Usually (covid) work back to back winters ski patrolling(Australia) and instructing(Austria). I'm a very strong skier but not incredible - can't pass the euro test. I currently ski the: Blizzard bonafide 187 (pre true blend) Fischer rc4 masters 183 And head collective 105 191 (which I hate but has my touring binding) As my volkl walls were stolen I don't have anything "fun" any more and while I absolutely love the bonafides and like that they now come in 184 I would like to try something new and a bit more playful that I can occasionally land switch on and is a bit more fun in the air. I was thinking maybe a blizzard rustler 9 although I don't like the sizing 180 or 188 would prefer 184 ish. Possibly a nordica enforcer 94 186? Sorry for the wall of text I wanted to provide as much of a picture as possible. Thanks

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello! Rustler 9 feels like a great choice to replace your Volkl Walls. It's a very fun ski and is certainly more playful than anything in your current quiver and also more playful than the Enforcer. It's also a great ski for doing a little bit of switch skiing and some tricks in the air. It's not a full twin tip, it's not a park ski, but it's certainly capable for someone who wants to do a little bit of that stuff on the side. For length, I think 180 cm would be best. 188 cm feels like overkill for your size, especially for a ski that's supposed to be playful for you. If that feels short to you, you could consider a 185 cm Ranger 94 FR from Fischer. That ski is a little lighter, but has similar characteristics to the Rustler 9. I wouldn't worry about that feeling long in the 185, but I think a Rustler 9 would feel long in the 188 cm length. Hope that helps!

    I've been skiing a 179 enforcer 88 and a 186 enforcer 104 free for the past few seasons, both skis have well over 100 days on them and need to be replaced. Looking to get some thoughts on sticking with the two ski setup (considering 184 mindbender 90ti or just buying another set of enforcer 179 88s, also looking at 184 ranger 102, 188 corvus, 188 rustler 10, or just another set of 186 enforcer 104s) or cutting down to one set for my everyday setup, thinking of 184 mindbender 99ti or 184 mantra 102. I ski mostly in VT and teach at Stratton, I do have narrower carving skis as well as a wider touring setup and would probably keep the current enforcer 88s as my teaching/rock/mogul skis. I know this question is a lot but any input is great, Thanks.

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Owen! Great question. Is there anything you particularly don't like about your Enforcer 88 + 104 combo? If not, it does seem perfectly reasonable to just replace them with new versions of the same ski. Sometimes, however, it's fun to switch things up just for the sake of switching things up. IMO, the Mindbender 90Ti does feel a little more versatile than the Enforcer 88. Slightly better performance in moguls and trees. Not quite as quick in how it comes across the fall line when carving, but still a good carving ski. So, if you wanted a slightly more versatile all-mountain ski, switching to a Mindbender would be perfectly reasonable. For the wider skis, it's kind of the same story. In this case, I think the story mostly revolves around weight. Were you at all bothered by the weight of the Enforcer 104? If not, I think I would just get another one. It's a fantastic ski, as you know. If you wanted to go a little lighter, however, both the Ranger or Rustler would be good options. I think the Ranger is a particularly interesting choice for you. Very similar characteristics to the Enforcer 104 overall, but a little lighter, which can come in hand in tight VT trees. Let me know what you think. I'd be happy to chat more about it.

    HI Leonardo! It'll do fine for touring, but is better in the resort. The longer tail rocker doesn't always enjoy having a skin on it, so it's not the best climber, so in that sense, the M-Pro would be a better choice, but then you're dealing with additional weight. They do make the M-Tour 99, so if you're looking for a tour-specific ski with the same shape, I'd take a look there. Have fun! SE

    Ranger 99 Ti would probably be my personal pick. Maverick 100 is good too, as well as the Kore 99. Even some of the heavier skis in this comparison are sometimes chosen for touring. Depends on how long/demanding your ascents are!

    Great review! Im looking for a little help? Debating between the QST98 and the Bent Chetler 100, I live on the West Coast of Canada and our snow can often tend towards the warm wet side. I have POW ski's for the deep days and this will be my daily driver for the groomers, bumps, crud, tracked out trees, spring skiing, basically everything but the deep days and the park. Iv been skiing all my life (43 Years old) some days I charge hard but others I like to just cruse around. Im 5'9 170lb Advanced skier. Any opinion to help me decide would be great, Thanks.

    The best way to decide between those two skis is to think about whether you want a ski to feel energetic, responsive, and snappy in its performance, or smoother, damper, and more surfy. The BC 100 is the energetic one. High camber height and a vey energetic flex pattern. It gives it a very poppy, playful, bouncy feel. QST 98, on the other hand, is more damp and more smeary. It doesn't feel snappy or energetic like the BC 100, rather surfy and smooth. Those to me are the biggest difference between those two skis. They basically accomplish the same things, but feel different when doing so.

    I kind of like the DPS on your list, but it took me a minute to think about it. They're all pretty different skis for occupying similar spots and widths. Eastern bumps and trees I'd take the Dynastar, and western powder I'd take the Maverick. I'd take the Bonafide for western groomers, and the DPS for all of it.

    Do you need a twin tip or do you want a more playful ski? If yes or yes, I would go Bent Chetler. Do you want more stability and vibration damping? Go Maverick. Realistically, there are pretty close in overall performance, but that's the difference you're going to feel. I think most directional skiers, at least aggressive directional skiers, are going to prefer the Maverick, while if you're a more playful skier, skis switch sometimes, and/or likes to do tricks, Bent Chetler is the better choice.

    Hey guys! I am a Pennsylvania skier mainly but I ski the west for about a week a year. I currently have the line blends for all mountain and for when conditions are bad out west, but they aren’t stable enough for me and I’m not huge into park. They’re too soft and not very durable. I hit jumps occasionally but do more trees and groomers and off trail stuff. I am between the Armada Strangers and the Atomic Bent Chetler 100s, but can’t decide!! Any input? I have the armada ARV 116 JJ UL Zeros for powder and love them, I need a better east coast and bad condition west coast all mountain ski!

    Hey Matt! Bent Chetler 100 would be a nice ski to add to your quiver. The Stanger has a softer-flexing feel. Not as soft as the Blend, but I wonder if you would feel some of the same limitations on it as you do on your Blend. The Bent Chetler has much higher camber height, which gives it more stability and a very snappy, responsive flex pattern. I think you'll find it's still super playful, but more capable on firm snow and through poor conditions.

    How is the Dinastar M Pro 99 in trees and softer snow?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Aidan! For a strong skier with good technique, they are fantastic. For an intermediate, they might be a bit much in the trees and/or softer snow. It all has to do with the tail. There's not much rocker back there and it's fairly stiff with the amount of metal. The tip of the ski handles soft snow really well, but it does require some active unweighting of the tail of the ski to get it to come around in really tight situations. The M-Free 99 is definitely easier in the trees, but for good skiers, the M-Pro 99 is a very versatile tool.

    Hey, i am looking to buy a new set of skis and i am wondering what you guys reccommend. I am looking for a stable ski to charge hard and fast with in the backcountry on all conditions (mostly hard snow like we have here in Norway, but i want them to work in a bit of powder as well). I will use them to tour but i prioritize the downhill heavily. I am looking for something around 100 mm underfoot, 180-185 cm which i will mount shift bindings on (tempted to mount cast touring look pivot 15s but i reckon thats a bit to strong for this ski width). I ride Lange xt3 140 boots. Been looking at the armada tracer 98s, ben chetler 100s and the g3 findr 102s. Any reccomendations?

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    Tracer 98 and Bent 100 are both good options. Both pair well with the Shift. They're not tremendously stable for high speed charging, but if you're touring, that's always going to be an area where you'll have to make some sacrifice for weight. You could consider a slightly heavier ski if you really want to maximize stability. Plenty of people tour on skis like the Ranger 102, especially if it's only occasionally and you'll be using a Shift. I don't know how wide you're willing to go, but the new Hustle 10 from Blizzard and Enforcer 104 Unlimited from Nordica are pretty impressive new players in this category.

    Hi Nick! My initial thought is that the BC 100 does really well in the trees, bumps, and powder. Are you specifically looking for more playfulness in these new skis compared to the Rustler 10? I do think the BC 100 is a more playful ski overall just because of the flex pattern and shape, but I'm still somewhat hung up on the width similarities among all these models.

    Hi Cameron! I generally find Prodigy skis feel a little bit stronger, while the Bents are more energetic and responsive. Both are a lot of fun to ski and I think both could work just fine for what you're doing. For length, mid-170 cm is probably ideal. In the Bent 100, I would probably go 172. 180 feels like overkill for now, unless you feel like you're growing so fast that next season you'll be closer to 5'10 or taller, then I would go 180. Hope that helps!

  • @SkiEssentials

    I would say it's pretty close between those two actually. Mindbender has slightly easier edge release, but the Enforcer has a shorter turn radius and longer rocker in the tip. Similar overall playfulness, just a little different. Maverick probably is the easiest to ski out of the 3 and also might be the most playful too. Definitely the lightest, which obviously plays into playfulness.

    Pretty sure it would fall on the right side of the sign, but it would also be one of the lighter skis on that side. What's really good about the Ripstick is it achieves a ton of stability and vibration damping, but is lighter and softer than most skis that are as smooth. That gives it more playfulness and maneuverability, without sacrificing grip or overall power.

    Deciding between bent chetler 100 and qst 98 for daily driver. Tahoe is home mountain. Spend time on and off piste. Advanced skier 5’8” 178lbs. Which would you recommend and at what length? Thanks guys!

  • @SkiEssentials

    @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    QST 98 is a more surfy/smeary ski. Bent Chetler 100 is more energetic and with a snappier flex pattern. Interestingly, the QST feels a little stronger at speed too, even though it has more rocker than the Bent. I think it's best to focus on that difference in surfy/smeary vs energy/responsiveness, however. Both skis would work great in Tahoe, just think about which matches your skiing style better. For length, I would go 172 Bent or 176 QST.

  • @SkiEssentials

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's an interesting conversation and one that comes up quite often. It's actually hard to say one is better than the other. The QST is quick and agile because of the long rocker profile. It's very easy to pivot and has a surfy, maneuverable personality. The Bent doesn't have as much rocker, but it's equally quick thanks to a snappy, energetic flex pattern and a lighter feel on your feet. So, it more comes down to skiing style. I think an accomplished, expert level skier would feel similarly as what I described. They're different, but hard to say one is better. A less skilled skier, however, may benefit from the easier edge release of the QST. It requires less skier input, so to speak.

    Hi, i can't stop watching your reviews. :-) But now I have a question. I am an advanced recreational skier, I would say. I ski about 20 days a year. I am 45 years old, 5'9 "230lbs, in very good physical condition. I ski in Europe. For icy and packed snow, I have a Salomon 24hrsTI, but basically it's only about 15% of my skiing. I am looking for a ski for all other conditions. I really love to ski off-piste, but in reality, in recent years, I would say that it is about 20% and the rest are mostly piste in different conditions. On the piste I would say I need some charger. I very rarely have the opportunity to ski in the woods, and on bumps, almost never. I was thinking to take the Enforcher100 186cm, but I'm not sure if I really need such a "strong" ski, maybe I would still take something livelier and more relaxed. What would you recommend?

    Hello! The Enforcer 100 in the 186 can feel like a lot of ski. You would probably actually benefit more from the 179 if you decide to go with the Enforcer. In fact, a 179 Enforcer 100 feels like a really good choice to me. 186 just feels like overkill as it's already such a stable ski. Maverick 100 would feel a lot lighter, but I think the Enforcer construction will be more supportive for you. M6 Mantra is a fantastic ski, but not as capable when you take it off trail, and it sounds like even though you don't get to do that super often, you still enjoy it and value that performance. Ranger 99 has a very stiff tail, which can feel like a lot, and I think it's probably not the best for you. Mindbender would be my second choice, but I feel pretty darn good about pointing you towards a 179 cm Enforcer 100...

    Hello everyone! Here's a little summary. When your answer arrived, I had already ordered the Enforcer 100 186cm, as my vacation time was fast approaching. I have to admit that I was a little depressed when I saw your answer. However, the moment I stood on them, it was love at first sight! 😍 OMG do they fly! The first few days the groomers were hard, since the snow did not fall for a couple of weeks, it was a combination of artificial and natural snow. I have to admit that I was afraid that the ski wouldn't be dynamic enough, considering the length! Man, how wrong I was. The ski goes and cuts almost like my frontside skis. On the third day, some 40 cm of fresh snow fell, but with a strong wind, so of the track it was combination of packed slabs and deep snow drifts. But with these skis there are no problems. In the past I was afraid to let the skis go so fast in those conditions. These, however, give such security that they simply make you fly. 🙂 After that, the conditions were mixed, but there is nothing more to say, it sure looks like you own the whole mountain. Whot to say, I am in love! 🥰

    Both are a lot of fun. The QST is looser, especially in soft snow. More surfy/smeary. The Maverick is more precise on firm snow. Longer effective edge, a little more edge grip too. It's not quite as surfy in deep snow, but still a lot of fun off-piste for sure. The amount of rocker is probably the biggest difference between the two.

    Depends if you want to focus on playfulness or stability. That's the easiest way to think about it. The Bent Chetler is going to feel lighter, more energetic, and in general more playful. The Mindbender, on the other hand, will feel more stable at speed and with better vibration damping. It's not as energetic or as easy to maneuver, but you definitely gain a lot of power compared to the Bents. Hope that helps!
