2022 Kia Telluride Brake Controller Installation - Removable!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video shows the installation of a Draw-Tite brake controller. I struggled to find an acceptable mounting location until I thought of an idea to make it removable. This works well for me because I don't tow often.

Thanks for this as well. I would probably just route the Brake Controller connector through the opening in the fuse cover for a cleaner look but that may not be doable. I'll give that a try when I do this later this year hopefully.

Why not run the cable through the fuse holder pull? Seems like an easy way to get it out of the way.

Hello PIF, 2 great videos for the 2022 KIA Telluride Brake hitch, Wire Harness and brake controller. We just took delivery of our new 2023 Telluride SX, and I am looking at installing the trailer tow package. As I installed the Weathertech mud flaps in the rear, I saw the 4 threaded holes for the hitch, 2 on each side. Did your instructions tell what the MM size short bolts dimension was for the 4 short bolts. I was going to install temporarily SS bolts in the threaded holes to keep dirt out until the time I get around to the actual installation. Also, I think when you made up your wire harness for the brake controller, it's too bad you didn't do a soldered line splice and use shrink tube to insulate the wires. Also, as one suggested, perhaps running the harness thru the hand hold of the fuse cover would be another option for the wire harness. Overall, you provided a great video for us DIY's for this installation. Just wanted to thank you for putting in the time to help us out with this project. Dave

Thanks Dave, hope the video helps when the time comes. I don't know the size of the bolts, sorry. My solution works great if you only occasionally use your brake controller. For a permanent mount, going through the hand hold probably makes sense. I just don't want to fiddle with that for a temporary solution. I just want to quickly swap the door and grab the cable from underneath the dash. But I do wonder if there's just a better place for a permanent mount. Maybe you'll find it! I'm not a big shrink tube guy. To me, the benefit of shrink tubing is that it looks good and has a nice finished appearance, both of which don't matter when it's hidden under the dash. Functionally, my method works just as well and more important to me, FASTER :).

@@PIFDIY After I watched your video, I went out to our 2023 and reached under the dash and I believe I could feel that wire harness and plug. I am going to check again with a mirror and light. I also checked out a couple of discount KIA OEM parts suppliers, and it did not seem they have the hitch for the 2023 listed. As you have probably heard, KIA has a recall on the trailer hitch wire harness, so I might have to use an aftermarket market hitch. I may just take down that cover on the left rear side and check to see if it looks like yours. I also found out the mm size of the 4 short bolts. Thanks for the reply, have a great Memorial Day weekend. Dave

thanks for info. And does the brake controller put 12v back to pin 4 of the 7pin harness socket?

No, the brake controller has a proportional output to the harness and will increase voltage as you push harder on the pedal or decelerate . You might get anywhere between 0vdc (no brake) to 12vdc (full brake).

Thanks for the video! So, it sounds like all Tellurides have the wiring for a brake controller run from front to back of the vehicle, even if they don't have the factory tow package installed? I have an "S" model, so just making sure that it's not different for that trim level. Thanks!

Good question Matt, I'm really not sure. They went to a 7 pin trailer connector on the OEM hitch in 2022. 7 pin connectors have a dedicated brake controller signal, so my guess is that you'll only find the under dash brake controller wiring harness on 2022's and newer. I don't think it matters which trim level; if they offered a tow hitch for your model, it should have the wiring. This is my guess. Please report back if you take a look at your wiring. Thanks!

@@PIFDIY I verified that there is indeed a harness for the brake controller installed on models without tow packages. My model "S" has it. So glad that Kia does this. It's been fairly complicated to run that type of wiring on certain vehicles i've had in the past.
