I bought a brand new Kia Rio 2021 hatchback S and I LOOOOVE this car! The new body styling is very European and sleek looking..certainly an upgrade from the dorky older models. I get excellent mileage and have gotten up to 45 MPG when I'm really cruising. I can fit a ton of stuff in this thing, despite it's small size. The seating doesn't feel small, either, and I've had passengers in the back seat who had no complaints regarding leg room. I really don't think it should be considered a sub-compact, because it doesn't feel like it. It's got a nice wide wheel base, which isn't always the case with other small cars. The infotainment screen is huge and so easy to use..and works great with my Android Auto. I use google maps for navigation and play my KZread music the most. I've been maintaining it on-schedule with the dealership for the past 2 years of having it and have had no issues whatsoever. I hope to have this car for a long time and it's just perfect!

Good job with the review. It seems like a great car for under $20k. You got me interested in this car. My only concern is long-term reliability versus spending a few thousand more for a Corolla hatchback.

Canadian consumer here. In Canada, we have 4 trim levels with the top trim being an "EX Premium" and the entry level being an LX with, (low and behold) a manual transmission. LX+ adds the automatic transmission. The EX Premium adds a LOT of features for not a lot of extra money. Getting Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Rear Cross Path detection, Fog Lights, Telescoping Steering Column rather than just a tilt function on lower models, Sunroof, Satellite Radio, etc. made this trim selection an easy choice for me. I've actually traded a 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Ultimate for a 2022 Kia Rio EX Premium and got an insane deal because Hybrids are in such high demand right now. In fact my 2021 with over 10,000 kilometers on it is retailing for about $2,000 above MRSP for brand new ones, which simply aren't available at this time. The Kia dealer actually bought out my Sonata Lease and wrote me a cheque for $2,750 for the equity value in my Sonata. WHY would I trade such a beautiful car for a Kia Rio? Quite frankly, we were barely driving the Sonata as we also have a 2022 Kia Niro PHEV which is an awesome vehicle and we drive it everywhere, predominantly on FREE electricity. This Rio will simply be a "run-a-bout" for times when my spouse and I have different agendas. Our lease payments are going down over $400 per month and that will easily pay for the slightly higher fuel consumption in the Rio. Unfortunately, I don't know when this 2022 Rio will show up but the dealer figured it could take up to 4 months. I was able to test drive a lower trim level and as in this video review, I was blown away by the performance, ride quality, and noise levels for this "Entry Level" vehicle, especially around the city where it will be driven most. While I'd be hard pressed to call the Rio beautiful, it is an attractive well balanced design AND I can't see the outside of the vehicle while I'm driving down the road anyway. The things that impress me most about this Rio revolve around it's simplicity: 1) No turbocharger (just something expensive to go wrong) 2) No Direct Injection with all it's inherent problems (another potential problem eliminated) 3) 15' wheels/tires which are inexpensive to buy but yield best economy and ride comfort as there's more shock absorption in those taller sidewalls. The industry has gone insane with bigger and bigger wheels and ultra low profile tires which usually mean bent rims when encountering potholes. 4) Rear DRUM brakes which make total sense in a Salt Laden winter climate. Rear disc brakes always corrode away long before they wear out as they're totally exposed to the elements and salt spray kicked up by the front wheels, AND 70% of your braking is accomplished by the Front Disc Brakes anyway. Duh! All in all, this little Rio is a pretty amazing accomplishment for Kia and since it is FULLY warranted for the duration of my 4 year lease, buying a used vehicle with all it's potential problems made no sense to me.

Hey man that's great! Just wondering if you could provide an update when you have the car in your hands because I too placed an order on this car here in Canada albeit the LX Premimum last month and I'm "patiently" waiting for my model to come in :)

  • @claytonroot806

@@luisbolivar4781 At the time I placed my order, Kia Canada was NOT accepting orders from dealers, i.e. the Dealers got whatever Kia Canada decided to send them, partially based on allocation from previous years. I popped in to see my local dealership the week of September 5th and was informed that there is no word on my vehicle yet BUT Kia Canada is now accepting orders once again. They actually had a lower trim level of the Rio which just came in from Mexico. I suspect that my order will be delayed because of the higher "Chip" requirements for this high end spec. In fact, I'm now presuming that I will be getting a 2023 Model rather than the 2022 which I'd requested. As long as the dealer doesn't try to re-negotiate a higher premium should such a scenario evolve, I'm O.K. with that. I made my trade deal for my 2021 Sonata Hybrid Ultimate when gasoline prices peaked above $2.00 per litre and hybrids were experiencing enormous demand. Now we're back down into the $1.40 per litre range so I'm expecting them to try and renag on the deal if hybrid demand is now waning. However, I've now also put another 3 months worth of equity payments into my Sonata so we'll see how it goes.

Or sport mode on a Kia Rio is somewhat of an oxymoron. However; I am super happy to see a car under 20k available.Take note Honda. The young people are struggling right now and they need cars too. This appears to be a decent choice. So good looking out Kia

Sadly, it's not just young people who are struggling right now. Quite a few middle-aged adults are struggling as well. Especially men of divorce. Wife decides she can do better, and just leaves.... with your children! The kicker is, you get the "privilege" of paying her *twice* every month for doing so. Once to take care of her, and once for your kids each month. What a joke. That's why I never married. But, even if a family is together, Welcome to the 21st Century. Where the best car they can afford as a family vehicle is going to be a Rio sedan or hatchback.

Have had my 2022 Rio S Hatchback with tech package for just 2 weeks. So far just what I had hoped for. Mileage so far city/highway mix of 42 mpg (just me in the car, I don't use sport mode, and I only tend to drive about 5 mph over speed limit.) As good acceleration and handling as my last car-- a 2019 Sportage. The tech package MAKES this car-- I wouldn't buy a Rio without it. Tech package is some great safety features such as lane keep assist but ALSO alloy wheels, pushbutton start, disc brakes all around, SiriusXM radio, LED headlights, automated climate control, and more.

I don't even know if Kia is making any profit by selling this car at the price point with 10 years powertrain warranty. This car will decimate the used car market. This video randomly popped up in my feed. I bought a 2018 Rio hatchback back in October of 2017 for only $13,400 (no power windows, LOL) and racked up over 100,000 trouble-free miles in nearly 3 years before thinking I needed a slightly larger vehicle. Traded it in for a 2018 Corolla iM hatchback that had only 9,000 miles for only $16,100 when prices were depressed due to COVID and soon regretted it. Sluggish acceleration, just merely average fuel economy and a sometimes harsh ride quality. I'm back in a 2022 Rio sedan now...was able to find one brand new for $18,100 about 350 miles away from home ($20,100 with taxes and fees). It doesn't excel in any one particular category..rather it does everything "just right" with solid ride quality (especially when compared to the super choppy and larger Kia Forte), pretty comfortable seats, a great wireless Apple Car Play/Android Auto infotainment, a decently sized trunk, rear seats that can seat 2 adults just fine and the fuel economy is superb for a non-hybrid. Best tank so far was over 47 MPG driving from Mammoth Lakes to Los Angeles, but otherwise I can routinely average 43-44 MPG on the highway...better than the official EPA figures.. Never have to worry about acceleration either, as I can merge into traffic safely and quickly..just what you want for a cheap daily driver.

1:00 Perfectly adequate Halogen Headlights??? Uh, not exactly. I have a 2023 Kia Rio and while I generally really like this vehicle overall, my first reaction upon driving in the countryside at night was an "OMG, they forgot to put headlights on this thing"! Since the Rio is only a little runabout for me and will generally be used in the daytime, I can live with the poor ancient headlight capability. Our other vehicle is a 2022 Kia Niro PHEV with LED Headlights and it's nighttime vision in the countryside is excellent. Another comment on the Rio regards the horn. Kia must have hooked up with Stellantis to source excess inventory from an old "Plymouth Road Runner" bin. It's that sort of single tone, Meep-Meep affair. Again I don't go around blowing the horn all that often so it's certainly not a deal killer. Overall, the Rio provides excellent VALUE in today's overpriced vehicle market.

I find the headlights to be fine and I feel good knowing I'm not one of those people with the obnoxiously bright LED headlights. And on back country roads, the high beams work amazing (as long as there's nobody in front of me).

@@ninaj84 If you find the Rio's headlights on high beam to be "AMAZING' on back roads, it indicates to me that you've never experienced the joy of driving on such roads with either HID or LED headlights. My daughter lives in an area where the chances of a dear collision at night are EXTREME so ANY lighting improvement is welcome.. Also, MODERN LED headlights have been designed to minimize glare for oncoming drivers. I CAN agree that in the past, this "glare factor" was indeed an issue. Our 2018 Kia Niro had HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlights and they were stunning! When driving on backroads, it was readily apparent to see the cutoff of light into the oncoming traffic lane whilst brightly lighting the lane I was travelling in. That 2018 Kia Niro was one of the FIRST vehicles to receive the IIHS "Top Safety Pick +" rating specifically for it's superior "non-glaring" headlight design. We now own a 2022 Kia Niro PHEV with LED headlights and they too put the halogen headlights on the Rio to shame although I would suggest that the HID headlights on the 2018 Kia Niro were actually better. Don't get me wrong, I find the Rio to be an amazing vehicle for it's price and I can live with the headlight deficiency as it is simply used as an around city run-a-about where there are obviously streetlights. However, IF I lived in a rural area, those old style halogen headlights would have been a deal breaker!
