This is my new favorite channel in a very long time! I get all of the information I’m looking for in a down to earth manner and the detail they provide is second to none! The fact that TK is a result of a dad and his kids sharing their passion of almost all things with an engine with the world brings back memories of my dad, brother and I doing the same thing. I just wish I could say we were still doing that… Cancer, what can ya do? Anyhow, keep up the awesome content guys! Y’all are the real deal!

I've had 2 ZJ's, a 96 Limited and a 98 SE. My 96 was bulletproof...my 98 I have no idea what happened, but that thing had transmission issues, electrical issues, and a horrible engine knock that wasn't the normal 4L I6 valve train noise this was low end....originally it would go away after a bit, but it got to the point where it was noticeable all the time. After the front transmission pump seal failed, that pretty much ended that...my 96 ZJ I took offroad all the time, it was covered in mud more than it was clean...it would go anywhere I pointed it, and it didn't have lockers, just the quadra-trac 4WD system. My 98 ZJ had Selec-Trac (one reason I bought it), I found out later on that it also had the rear factory limited slip as well. If it weren't for all the issues I was having with it, I'd still have it, way too many problems to throw money at. Did a lot of offroading and a lot of towing with my 96 ZJ, it did everything I asked it to do, and it also made several trips to California and back home to Idaho...it was a great go to the mountains rig, and take it on an out of state trip vehicle...never had any worries with it.

Thanks Steve hope you are feeling better … less snotty! I always look forward to your reviews and I’ve really been looking forward to the new Grand Cherokee. I’d be interested in hearing your opinion of the ride and handling vs a bmwX5 or Audi Q7. I had heard that Alfa Romeo engineers were involved in the design of this chassis and it was Stelantis’s goal to have this handle BETTER than it’s comparable BMW. I gather from your dad’s single comment that it is tight that he liked it’s handling. That is a journalistic comparison is important to me. Also payload? I realize this may be a preproduction model but when you do your towing test that is a very important number to me as the old Grand Cherokee only had a payload of 1050 Lbs. That made it only really a two passenger vehicle when towing at the limits (6200). I’m cross shopping this with the Nissan Pathfinder and it has a beefy 1298lbs …. Really a true three passenger tow vehicle and better fuel economy with its direct injected mill. I’d heard that this vehicle shed 250 lbs so that would probably explain the slight mpg increase.

I was really disappointed when building a new 2022 GC Laredo online when I could not add the 2 speed transfer case. It would be nice if they kept the classic around a few more years with the 2 speed transfer, or add it to the new ones. I am no off-road expert, but I know how nice low range is going up really steep hills off pavement. And how many of us really want to take a $70,000 vehicle off-road. Seems more logical to put the off-road equipment on the less expensive models.

But the cheapest is close to $58k in the Trailhawk. A mid-size, utility SUV shouldn't always cost more than a Full-sized truck. Can we let the Grand Wagoneer take Jeep luxury to the stratosphere and still have a budget Grand Cherokee with all the beef?

i don't get why they would do a phev ala the wrangler. the 8 speed "torqueflight" transmission just got a update from ZF to take a 200hp 330ftlbs pancake motor where the torque converter goes. this seems like a much more desirable way to achieve a phev in the GC than what's in the wrangler because you can still bolt it right to your hemi.

  • @CSLFiero

    @CSLFiero

    2 жыл бұрын

i mean consider that if you run a 5.7l hemi to the 4th gen ZF phev, you can still do cylinder deactivation, change the cam phasing to run atkinson cycle, and get nearly the same mileage as the 4 pot, but then compound the full power of both motors and you can be just behind a hellcat. why is this being withheld?

I don’t get why they can’t make a sway bar disconnect that actually functions properly on any of there models. Ford for example, has a sway bar disconnect on the bronco that works as soon as you hit the button, hell it even disconnects while under load! It just seems weird to me. Stellantis has the Power Wagon, Jeep Rubicon, and now this and they still haven’t figured it out?

that would involve R&D dollars to be spent. Jeep as a brand has enough of a market and fanboyism who are completely fine with the maker churning out tepid awfulness. the mustang suffered the same issue with the solid rear axle, ford openly admitted they saved $500/unit and justified that their buyers 'liked it'. that's now been fixed. my neighbor loves his 2018 wrangler rubicon and he's constantly 'tinkering' fixing things (like diff gears that seemed to be made out of the softest metal on earth) and he justifies it as being a 'part of owning a jeep'... i call it something different, 'part of owning a PoS', but that's just me. my brother in-law just bought a new wrangler, he asked me what i thought of it compared to a 4-Runner (they don't off-road at all) prior to buying, i gave him my opinion. his wife liked the way the jeep looked, so they ended up with the jeep (girls LOVE jeeps). it's most challenging obstacle will be a speed bump. he's already frustrated with how it handles on the highway, but hey, it looks cool.

I didn't like the new Grand Cherokee at first. I think it was because they first showed the 3 row "L". I thought it just looked fat and ugly, like most new SUVs. The rear end is flat like a bus. But now that I've seen the 2 row, it's grown on me. The rear end and overall shape is just so much nicer. Especially the Trailhawk. The off road bits on the Trailhawk make it a lot more fun and playful. I'd only consider the 2 row to be honest.

They had solid axles front and rear, making them the best mid-size offroaders out there....well the Grand Cherokee from 1993 through 2004 had front and rear solid axles...but when the Grand Cherokee first came out it was more of a luxury type base, but people loved them and as they aged they became the step up in size from the XJ Cherokees for offroading. The ZJ's and WJ's were great for offroading because they had so many options for aftermarket stuff to build them into whatever you wanted to do whether it be hard core crawling, or overlanding, or even both. Not sure I'd want a Grand Cherokee, or any Jeep for that matter after 2004. The Grand Cherokee from 1999 to 2004 you could actually get with one of the best offroad capable 4WD systems....Quadra-Drive. Not only did you get full time 4WD, but you also got front and rear visco-locking differentials...after 2004 you could only get a rear locker in the Quadra-Drive equipped models.

I really wish Jeep would resurrect the iconic Jeep Cherokee XJ... classic boxy 4 door.... all it needed was to be slightly enlarged... but instead they discontinued it in 2001 and replaced it with that VW bug looking Liberty.... Jeep has been unsuccessfully trying to recreate what they lost ever since... First with the Commander, then the 2nd Gen Liberty , then the Patriot... all flops !!! I really want Jeep to make a true working mans sUv with the emphasis on the "U" .. There is a reason the old (1980s) Jeep wagoneers and Toyota land cruisers are so popular.... classic boxy look.. easy to see out of... The wrangler does not have the cargo room and I don't need a roll bar, and doors and roof to come off... I want a body on frame SUV I can see out of, use for hunting and camping, and easily load kayaks on.... a lower end new GC Laredo trim may first the bill !!!

This is the first grand cherokee not based on the mercedes developed WK platform since 2005. They REALLY had to do a clean sheet for this thing with the target market they're going after. And with what I see it's paid off very well, but time will tell if the sales hold up. The plug in hybrid overland trim with the trailhawk package is what has my interest because its a plug in hybrid in a world full of regular hybrids and full ev's, and phev's are the only kind of ev's I want. They are probably keeping the old grand cherokee for the SRT models until they get the SRT models onto the new platform (or if they do) because the ram classic is made for fleets more than anything else. They probably don't want the same gap in production ford had with the raptor being MIA for a year because they were late to market with it. Edit: the only real competitors to the grand cherokee are the bmw x5, gle, and q5, except those are dedicated luxury platforms without any real offroad. That only leaves the land rover discovery and maybe one of the budget range rovers. You could make some arguements for the 3 row grand cherokee L competing with all the CUV minivan things, but really the only competition for the grand cherokee L is the explorer and the aviator.

None are MB-based. The WK is a modified WJ. And the 2011+ was built on conjunction with the 2012 ML and 2013 GL-Class. Some say the Jeep version of the chassis is even more premium due to fortification for off-road mission.

The new GC is significantly more expensive. The Trailhawk starts at $51,670. My '18 Trailhawk started at $43,295: $8500 less...! This is a big jump. New, more refined platform, but practically, you get a bit more ground clearance and the adjustable sway bars. In ’18 Jeep didn’t charge for paint (now $400). Destination charge is now an outrageous $1800! ($1100 on the '18), a profit center for Jeep. Also, it's worth noting that if you want a (sluggish) V8, it's not available on the Limited anymore, meaning you'll have pay a lot more for a higher trim level to get it. This is a lot of money for what cannot be described as Toyota levels of quality. No Thanks.

My 98 Grand Cherokee SE 4L I6 with Selec-Trac and rear limited slip was about $32,000 new...yep, a limited edition was about $35-37k new back then....pretty much double, almost triple those prices now unfortunately. I love the 1st and 2nd gen Grand Cherokees, don't think I'd want anything newer than the 2004 WJ though.

Idk... I'm a bit of a cross between the 2 groups... I just got a GC L Limited. I do love my truck but I do wish it had a few more of the off-road features. Like maybe the E lockers... I don't want the full air suspension. I have it in the rear for the towing but I don't want the full thing... But I would love slightly better diffs... Especially because I live where it snows a decent bit...

So i've been watchin ur channel for couple of days now - old and new stuff - and daaaamn you guys are just stating opinions basen on nothing in particular... Like "this thing will be great for towing" or this will be "good offroading"... Based on what???? Most of the facts you cite are maker-based. You dont ever try to exceed trucks limits to see if its capable.... Like - i can read the add for myself - you're supposed to give it some testing/excersize/etc... I understand you borrow/loan your vehicles, but then state it clearly - "we didnt have the courage/insurance to test this, and all we can do i assume"... And dont call yourself a testing channel....
