I think the reason they kept the portrait orientation for the M2 ipad pro but changed it for the 10th gen is because of the lack of pencil 2 support, since the charger would be at the exact same place as the camera and face id sensors and I'm not sure there's enough internal space for that. Just a hypothesis.

Yeah, that had to be done. But considering they prob working years ahead on those products, they had PLENTY time to make it happen. Just imagine a huge team worked on the new iPad for years - and the only thing they did is throwing M2 on there. That’s weak folks…

I’ve been on the 11” pro from 2018 since release. The new pro is an upgrade for me, however it’s still not a crazy upgrade overall from the latest pros. It’s a little odd. The real head scratcher is the new base iPad. It’s not in my use case, however it’s quite a weird system. It’s like they threw stuff together, new and old, and tried to get this out fast just to keep iPad going.

The reason they moved the camera on the baseline iPad is because they did a redesign. The pro didn’t get redesigned so it would’ve been harder move the camera. Still annoying though

I’m just going to point out the iPad Air 4 exists. Same size, same A14 chip. Supports Apple Pencil 2 and supports the other Magic Keyboard. It’s also cheaper on the official Apple refurbished section… this new iPad is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen😐

What I don’t understand is why the new iPad can’t support both gen 1 and gen 2 apple Pencils. It even has the flat sides to charge the gen 2 Edit: especially with that price hike

@Jacob Milford The new ipad is worse in many ways compared to the 9th gen, first of all there’s no headphone jack, no home button, no way to connect the pencil directly to the ipad, you can’t sit the new one flat on a table, overall I would keep my current 8th gen than upgrade to the 10 as previous models worked better for being used as a simple tablet which the ipad still is

Also, at this point, you would have to be a hard core iPad mini fan like Jon Prosser to not just spend $50 more and by the normal iPad. The pricing for the lineup of iPads just doesn't make sense.

Do you think it’s worth getting if you don’t buy iPads frequently? I bought my last iPad in ‘18. It’s works but it’s crazy slow now.

I held off for the new iPad Pro as an upgrade from my air 4,,,bit of an anti-climax for me as really wanted the horizontal webcam. im going to be looking for a a poss discounted pro 21 model instead. (upgrading for the full monitor screen support, if still exists that is unless an update has removed that capability)

Sam, I have worked with the Canadian CNIBB helping the blind and or people with sight disabilities and they use the iPad for its big screen so they are able to take pictures and videos and actually know what there camera is pointing at because of the largest view finder that apple makes and they use the LiDAR to be able to see doorway detection and machine learning for vocal sign reading and menu reading thru the camera

I'm definitely scratching my head on this "event" . Looks like I'll be keeping my 11" M1 iPad Pro for a bit longer. I have been waiting for Apple to give the 11" Mini LED, landscape camera, and MagSafe Wireless charging with reverse charging capabilities. The only "Good" thing to happen for me this year concerning Apple, is switching to iPhone. I got the Deep Purple 14 Pro Max to replace my OnePlus 7 Pro.

I definitely was really looking forward to the wireless charging coming on this iPad mainly as well as I have a glass top nightstand cabinet that uses this tech for phones mainly, but was hoping to eventually use this on an iPad as I already own the 2017 iPad Pro which fits the spot for it perfectly, but that iPad doesn't have the wireless charging tech....

Is there an app yet where your able to use the iPad as an external monitor while out on shoots. I think making it work seamlessly with professional cameras to be used as like a directors monitor would be a high selling point. They even could make and sell their own special apple holder for it

I agree with your assessment, Sam, the iPad lineup is disjointed. The new baseline iPad having the front facing camera in landscape view is positive, while having 1st generation Apple Pencil support is perplexing. Then with regard to the new iPad Pro's still having the front facing camera in portrait mode, again is a perplexing decision unless it was retained in the original orientation to reduce tooling costs. The ability to shoot and edit Pro Res video on the M2 iPad Pro is quite interesting, as it would allow editing of Mavic 3 cine Apple ProRes 422 video. The imminent release of da Vinci Resolve on the iPad Pro is a positive as it would join other "professional grade" applications such as Affinity Photo and Luma Fusion.

you didn’t talk about the new Keyboard Folio accessory, which is a great accessory BUT due to the Smart Connector placement being different on the new base iPad, it only supports that and not the Air nor Pro models. It even has a function row!

The prices have hiked by way more in the UK! You should do a video on it on all the price changes!

I bet the camera on the iPad Pro didn’t move to landscape because of the Apple Pencil 2 charging tech is placed there. Probably not enough room to put both without some sort of compromise

Another difference with the $149 AppleTV 4k is Thread support vs base model.

So disappointed with the iPad Pro not moving the camera to landscape. I was ready to pull the trigger on a new iPad Pro, I have the 2018 model and its starting to show its age, so was looking to upgrade. I guess I'll wait till the supposed 14.1 iPad comes out hopefully in the spring.

Yeah i never use my ipad with a pencil so its a non issue. A non laminated screen is though.

The reason the camera is in the same spot on the iPad Pro is because if they were to move the camera, they would have to remove the Apple Pencil to support like they did on the iPad 10

The camera moving to landscape means no Apple Pencil 2

I think the reason behind not putting the camera in landscape in iPad Pro is because of Face ID.

I find I regularly cover the camera when picking up my Pro 11 so problems with FaceId as well as the slightly shifty looking Facetime calls.

Looks like I’ll continue to use my 2018 iPad Pro that has been going very strong since and apple has not given any reason to upgrade. Will wait for USB C and a better upgraded screen…hopefully one with thinner bezels…maybe even the dynamic island in it. Anything other than just this. Might pick up that new Apple TV everything else I’ll just continue to be patient.

Something I find kinda funny when you mention the benefit of WiFi 6E, is that comparing the iPad models, the iPad Pro models don't mention the 6GHz band at all, only the 2.4 and the 5.

Im honestly glad it didn’t support Apple Pencil 2 or get a laminated display. I have an ipad air 5 and was pretty pissed that they upgraded the base ipad this much, makes my purchase more worthwhile

Did you consider that the camera module and hardware that inductively charges the pencil 2 can’t be integrated? That’s why there is no pencil 2 support on the unit with the portrait camera and no portrait camera on the unit that supports the better pencil.

I'll be upgrading from my M1 ipad pro to this new M2 chip solely because I want to see if it'll run League of Legends on maxed out graphics.

I know people keep saying that the Apple TV was a dumb upgrade, but I was thinking about buying it and now this really solidifies it for me. It may not be an upgrade for the people that already have it but for the people that don’t have it this was a nice change.

Is it expected in 2023 to change the iPad Pro 11 with the same changes in the iPad tenth generation?

The iPad Pro 11 inch an iPad Pro 12.9 inch each went up $100 here in Canada.

My guess for the landscape camera is that Apple never intended to have one, but once they had a reason to not put the Apple Pencil 2 magnet on it they decided to hide that by moving the camera up there. So the Pro still has it because it still has the pencil magnet.

The reason why the iPad 10 doesn’t have Apple Pencil 2 support is directly because of the landscape camera- this hardware means there is no longer space for the Apple Pencil inductive charger. The Pro does not have the camera moved as this would prevent Apple Pencil 2 charging- Apple thought that for the cheaper iPad the landscape camera was more important than Pencil 2 support.

The reason the pro is on Portrait is Apple has multiple teams who design things which is probably the same reason the MacBook Pro m2. Is the same body is it’s a separate team

What people need to realize now is that they will not do a new major chip and a new design in the same year. That's part of what makes it more stable and keeps the price the same. The fact that they don't have to offset the cost of a new chip and a new design at the same time and then pass it along to the consumer. This year was not a major update year for the iPad Pro just a spec bump year which means next year is going to be a major update year. They didn't move the camera because it didn't redesign the body, they used the old one.

@iupdate Concerning the Apple Pencil. I think so far they didn’t succeed to combine the FaceTime cam and the Apple Pencil at the same side. They might interfere electronically. Probably the reason why the front cam is on the shortest side on the other iPads, to be able to charge the Pencil on the longest side. Now they moved the cam on the regular iPad, it seems there’s no possibility to charge the Pencil 2 at all, and you can’t plug it into another charger either. So they need to use the Apple Pencil 1 once again…

I do not mind using Davinci Resolve…cause that’s what I use!!

I was gonna buy an iPad 10 to replace my 11 year old iPad 2 I got 3 years ago but I’m gonna get a used iPad Air 4 because it works with Apple Pencil 2 and is pretty similar from what I’ve seen on the Compare section.

They should have kept a sub $350 iPad. It's the gateway Apple device for a lot of folks. It was a screaming deal and I'm going to miss it. Lots of misses on this non-event event.

I’m actually glad the didn’t add the wireless charging to the iPad Pro. It doesn’t make much sense to me. Wirelessly charging an iPhone from an iPad would drain way too much battery from the iPad. Plus the iPhone would be too heavy. You’d have to awkwardly reach behind your iPad while working to use your phone too. I was very interested to see what they were going to do with the Magic Keyboard though. I’m just glad I get to save money for the rest of the year!

Most people who will be buying the base ipad will probably only use to make facetime calls and watch shows I imagine. They probably won't even buy a pencil.

If the pros got a landscape camera, there would be no room for inductive pencil charging as it would be on the same side as the camera. Hence why the 10's didn't get apple pencil 2 support

The base iPad still does not have a laminated display and the 11" iPad Pro still does not have mini LED. :-( I guess I will keep my 2018 iPad Pro and wait for the OLED iPad Pros in 2024.

Honestly, I have family members with older iPads and the 10th Gen is a perfect upgrade for them. They like using the pencil but not enough to drop an extra 200 on the next version. So now they can get the next Gen design and still use at least the pencil and not have to buy a new keyboard and pencil. The adapter is stupid but not as stupid as every tech KZreadr is saying right now. It’s not for Pros, it’s for people with old iPads who don’t care.

The most confusing thing for me was seeing the new “iPad” and the design and getting hyped and then the damn usb c adapter and not being able to use the 2nd gen Apple Pencil which was dumb as fuck…. I could be wrong but the reason the iPad Pro didn’t get the camera in landscape is because the camera would not leave room for the magnetic connection and it wouldn’t be able to support Apple Pencil 2. That’s why the iPad 10th gen can have the camera in landscape but not be compatible with Apple Pencil 2.

Sorry my guy, but the pro with the larger screen is straight up best used in portrait virtually always. In portrait, it has the same width as the standard iPad so you see the whole website or whatever just fine, but a lot more vertical real estate for better reading and scrolling. Same for drawing, more like a sheet of paper. The standard iPad is mostly landscape because the screen just isn’t wide enough in portrait; which doesn’t apply to at least the larger pro. If Apple put the camera on the side of the 12 inch pro, that would be much more of a head scratcher.

6:39 I didn't even notice that. USB-C is slowly becoming the standard for Apple. I wonder if the charging speeds will increase because of this.
