JDM Airbox Part Number: SU003-09558
Which would you do and why?? Cut the charcoal filter out of your USDM airbox, go with the JDM unit, or keep things stock? Post your thoughts in the comments below.

Did you personally notice any differences when swapping out the airbox?

As far as installation, no. As far as performance, yes, surprisingly so. Throttle tip-in is noticeably more firm, and throttle response is much, much better - to a point where I’m no longer contemplating a “throttle commander” type device. I don’t feel things are any faster, but quicker for sure. The air intake is louder too; I’d say 50-60% more “whooshy.” - Mike

Also want to know if there’s any power difference or better intake sounds? And is there any chance of a dyno test?

Yes, surprisingly so. Throttle tip-in is noticeably more firm, and throttle response is much, much better - to a point where I’m no longer contemplating a “throttle commander” type device. I didn’t dyno the car, but others have seen 8-10rwhp by removing the charcoal folter and adding and aftermarket air filter. The air intake is louder too; I’d say 50-60% more “whooshy.” - Mike

I actually just installed the JDM airbox myself, but for some reason, I can't seem to get the MAF sensor seated perfectly into the new JDM airbox. The screws are straight and appear to be as far in as they'd go (I tightened them down by hand with a screwdriver) but the MAF can still wiggle a bit in place. Did you run into any similar problems? Or is your sensor perfectly tight in the airbox?

Mine is snug as a bug. Check that the MAF is facing the correct direction (arrow on top pointing to throttle body). The screws also have tiny washers...I don't believe they can be removed but is worth checking.

@@KonkrRoads MAF sensor is facing the correct direction and the "washers" on the screws are just part of the head. It's possible that I just need to use a bit more force since I'm essentially creating the threads with the original screws..

Now that it has been about 4 weeks do you still feel the gains by having no charcoal filter?

100% yes. I doubt there's a better mod for money...JDM charcoal-free airbox + the HKS filter is an easy win. The throttle response increase still surprises me. 🤙

@@KonkrRoads Does the HKS filter require any “maintenance”? Are there any “maintenance-free” filters for this airbox?

Where did you order the airbox? Are there any US vendors for it?

I ordered mine from RHDjapan for $36 + shipping. To order is a bit tricky; you have to establish an account and then request the part quote--you'll get a quote via email and then you can purchase. The part number is SU003-09558. www.rhdjapan.com/oem-public-page/ It's doubtful you'll find a US Vendor as this is a unique JDM (and Europe & Aussie) part.

If Subaru or Toyota can link the engine issue with the loss of the filter, then yes. However I don't see how the removal of this filter would cause engine problems; the increase of airflow is minimal and the original JDM factory design did not have it to start with. A chance we all take I suppose.

I 100% agree but I feel they will do anything they can to make an excuse to not pay up
