2022 Genesis G70 | Luxury Sedan Family Review

Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. This new 2022 Genesis G70 is one of them. The Genesis competes with compact luxury sedans like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, & Mercedes-Benz C-Class. In this video, we drive the Genesis G70 to review its positives and negatives from a family perspective.

Nothing beats a sedan for looks, driving dynamics and seating comfort (for the driver). Come from an SUV or CUV and you'll notice. I don't think I'll ever give them up as long as they sell them just to sit up higher.

Interested in your thoughts - a lot of reviewers said the manual version was mediocre. But I'm interested in finding a used one since it came with the Sport package (LSD, brakes, etc.) and 2.0. What kind of gas mileage are you getting? The V6 seems to be very thirst.

@@Ryan-de9ox @Ryan-de9ox I looked at and drove a lot of cars since I wrote that comment. I drove a manual 2.0 Sport G70 and enjoyed it. The transmission wasn't like a Miata, but it was still fun. I didn't get to push it much, but the handling was definitely very good. My biggest issue was that the asking prices 18 months ago were not great. Dealers were still asking mid- to upper-$30k's. These days they have come down a lot: they're now in the mid- to upper-$20's. If I was buying now, I'd be much more likely to get one. But I needed a car last year, so I ended up going for one of the original inspirations for the G70: a 2004 e46 BMW 330i with the ZHP Performance Package and 6-speed manual transmission. It was a fraction of the price, and it's a lot of fun to drive. Of course, its a nearly 20 year old BMW, so I've put a lot of time and money into refreshing it. But it's been a (mostly) fun project and should hopefully last for at least another 100k+ miles (currently at 150k).

I am seriously considering buying one of these as they are seriously impressive for the money. Considering a slightly faster M340i is $15,000 more than the 46k mid range 3.3t rwd I want! That's a lot of money to be put to use, since the germans have gotten seriously over priced for marginally better performance and lackluster resale. Not to mention the long term repair's and durability, and standard maintenance cost at the dealer of the germans are much higher. Plus the warranty of 10 year/100k miles, Genesis is killing it.

@@borninhk1 So what? I owned 3 different BMWs in the past 12 years, all crap reliability. All of them started to break down after 30k miles, one at 18k miles. By far the worst reliability ever of all cars I’ve owned. I don’t give a crap if Genesis gets a couple miles worse in gas mileage as long as it’s reliable. If you can afford luxury cars, gas mileage is the least of your concern. As for “better” material quality of i340, it better for $15k more. My next vehicle will be the G70 or GV70.

Well, as long as he doesn't speak (and scares the crap out of me while driving alone) then I am fine. He's sort of cute anyway. So stunning. Very elegant looking inside and out. I love that Genesis makes proper rwd cars. Wished Genesis would have given it the GV70 powertrains as the G70's 2.0T engine is a dog. Really my only gripe. Hope they make a Sportier version to compete against the M340i or M3. In the 3.3TT trim, this would get my money when shopping given its looks, sporty driving, and generous equipment levels.

That way you don't have to move either hand on the wheel to move the dimmer stalk while on those twisty mountain roads at night! (Ok, Ok, integrate it with the stalk so either will work.) Did I hear right that the tachometer has a tenuous relationship with the actual engine RPM? Interesting feature!

Micah, that is a hefty "as-tested" price. Probably should have bought a '19 2.0t 6sp instead of my WRX and your video is yet more proof I should have done the Genesis route. Sure, "STI money" for a slighly less capable car, but I think the G70 would be a much nicer place to be in my 30 minute commute. The WRX is nice, but it draws way too much attention from "other" cars (and I don't have the STi wing either).

The g70 is a great second car for families. If you have to have two because parents work and need to commute, why get two SUVs? Get one SUV and one small, sporty car.

An undeniably appealing "sports" sedan. But there's one major fail in the refresh. While KIA, Hyundai, and Genesis have all replaced the relatively uninspiring 2.0L four cylinder engine in (at my last count) at least 9 vehicles with a much more powerful and nearly identically fuel efficient 2.5L turbo four banger, in many cases with a new wet clutch DCT, Genesis has elected to leave the previous two liter engine in the G70. The choice is especially puzzling considering that the new engine is the base motor in the Genesis GV70 SUV, the G80 sedan, and the G70's closely related cousin, the KIA Stinger. With the new engine in the Stinger the 0-60 performance improved by nearly 2 seconds, making it only about a half second slower than the 3.3L twin turbo GT versions. (5.1 vs 4.7 seconds). Similar improvements should have been expected in the G70. So why did Genesis fail to improve the performance of the base (and considerably more affordable) G70? The most plausible explanation is that the brilliant minds at Genesis felt improving the base model would cannibalize sales of the more expensive 3.3L version of the G70. And God knows overall sales of the G70 have been dismal. (Only 4800 units sold in the US in the first half of 2021. And according to my local Genesis dealer nearly all their sales are the V6 version. ) Still, it seems odd that with such terrible sales figures for the G70 Genesis would be interested in improving overall sales even if it means less profit on the lower priced base version. Most observers expect next year's model of the G70 to make the switch to the 2.5L turbo engine in the base trim. And since the Stinger will almost certainly be dead after 2022 the Genesis won't have to be embarrassed by the stronger selling KIA. But at least for this year, Genesis apparently decided not to show any love for the base version of their sports sedan.

The car looks so elegant on the outside but I really dislike the red accents on the interior, looks like it belongs in an STI or something, wish it was all black, or subtle white/brown accents instead.

I want to like this car but didn't realize how small it really was. A uselessly TINY trunk and all other interior and exterior dimensions within about 1 inch or less of a Mazda 3 Turbo AWD means I would save about $17,000 dollars and go with the Mazda, a no brainer.
