2022 Ford F-150 Lightning | MotorWeek Road Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If the future of driving is indeed battery electric vehicles, we’re going to need a lot more choices than just odd-looking hatchbacks and super-expensive luxury cars. Now, Ford knows this, and is electrifying the longtime best-selling vehicle in America, the F-150. And this is how lightning strikes!

We will see what the real range is. In Maine, with a mild winter, my friends new Mustang went from 320 miles to...wait for it...150! Needless to say he no longer is a Ford owner. For the record, I saved from the age of 13 to 16 to buy my first car, a 1986 Mercury Capri 5.0. so yes, I'm biased, but sceptical.

So we’ve been demolishing numerous power plants since 2014. I’ve been on 4 big demos personally. And they didn’t replace them. So my question is with all the looming power shortages they keep talking about how are we going to power all these electric vehicles? I mean the torque and horse power are great. They know most people who buy this vehicle are going to be those who are well within the means of what it can perform. Most pickup truck owners don't even tow, and the most they haul is groceries, and maybe some furniture at best. For that, this truck will more than suffice. You're argument only holds up if talking about heavy duty towing and hauling, in which case, by all means stick with what you know. But don't generalize something as being undesirable that a lot of us are very much interested in and very much want to have just because it's not to your liking personally. The idea is to invest more in renewable energy sources, like solar, wind, geothermic, and hydropower. The problem is that there has been so much damn resistance from those in support of big oil and coal, that even trying to invest in anything renewable has been met with fierce resistance, and damn near blood in the streets from people who have a vested interest in what has always been, and zero interest in what could be. It's kind of hard to make progress when you have a bunch of people that are stuck in old-timey ways that refuse to embrace anything that resembles something different.

Aerodynamics is actually a measurable quantity. Often what LOOKS more aerodynamic isn’t. Even things such as no grille improves aerodynamics. That’s why cars have electronic controlled grille shutters in front of the radiator now. The Lightning has no grille at all just an small opening near the bumper. Other things improve aerodynamics as well. Again, it’s not visible appearance only.

According to the MAHB, the world's oil reserves will run out by 2052, natural gas by 2060, and coal by 2090. As oil gets hard (and more expensive) to pump out of the ground, the prices will go up 10 times in price long before we run out of it, all due to extreme competition for what little fuel is available. If gas will cost $50 per gallon by 2035, we better have electric vehicles so we can fill up with the much-cheaper locally-sourced coal-generated electricity.

Most people aren't thinking about the standard plugs. Once you get to your final stop. Camp grounds have 110-120v plugs. Does it take forever to charge. Yep, but you can plug it in on arrival and most of the time by next morning if you need to go somewhere it will be full. If you go to visit someone away from home and you're going to be there a few hours same thing. Throw them 5 bucks if you need to. May sound silly but you can buy a small portable generator used. Keep it in the frunk. Get somewhere without power? You can charge enough to get you to a charging station. All of these things can be inconvenient but will improve over time as more stations are built and charging becomes the norm.
