Nice review. Just one thing that I hope everyone is clear about: If anything, this would be the electric version of the M340/440i, not of the M3/M4. Just as the x40i's, this car is meant to deliver extra road performance, not track performance and aerodynamics. BMW has yet to announce any pure M electric car that's track oriented (I think they announced the iXM, not sure, but that's an SUV). If you keep that in mind, I think this car starts making a lot more sense. It provides luxury, comfort, performance, AWD, and quite efficient electric driving for commuting and road trips, but it's not a car you'd take around a track and expect it to beat an M car around it. It's direct competition would be the Tesla Model 3 and the Polestar, not really the Taycan.

The battery pack is built to utilize the shape of the drive shaft tunnel. BMW has a good press kit on the battery shape, so the tunnel does serve a purpose.

Think of it this way: With some of the battery molded up into the tunnel, the rest of the battery can be that much thinner so the floor is lower.

Test drove one today. It’s insanely fast and quick. No it’s not a track car but for daily driving good God it’s a riot. Way more immediate than a model y or model 3 performance.

@@KiNG-tx9je yes I have driven both a performance 3 and 7. They're quick obviously. The i4 m50 is neck snapping immediately quick.

The effort that goes into making these videos are pretty clean man, I enjoy watching these every time I get a notification.

I drove a demo i4 M50 not too long ago and it was the most fun I had in a while. It's incredibly zippy and the interior quality was really nice. The handling around corners incredibly responsive and didn't feel like I would lose control easily. It feels a little heavy but I don't mind it because it takes away that "go kart" feeling. The infotainment was a little hard to navigate and get used to but it looks incredibly nice and is very responsive but I do wish they would have cleaned up the menus a bit more and consolidate some things.

I'm torn. I prefer this over the Model 3 which everyone and their mom's owns where I live in Orange County, Califor is. Order the i4 M50 or wait for an i5 in the near future. Tough decisions.

Completely agree with you. I’ve owned one for three months now. It’s a great car and very fast, but not a sports car. On paper, performance is similar to my Aston V12 Vantage, but it would always beat the Aston from the lights. What it won’t do though, is beat the Aston through the twisties or give me the same thrills. That said, I really like the i4 M50. As a previous owner of two M3s, an M3 CSL and a v10 M5, I’d say it’s M-adjacent, but not an M car.

The shots and editing of the intro is from out of this world! BMW should hire you and your editor to do BMW commercials for them.

Nice review but some things aren't correct. That looks like Portimau blue, not frozen portimau blue. The rear seats do fold down. The back window is really small. Ventilated seats are an option. Everything else is spot on. "Ultimate Daily Driving Machine?"

Yes! Please do a BMW X5 45e……we’re currently torn between the above mentioned car vs Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid PHEV. We bought an 2022 X3 buuuuut the gas prices here in LA are nuts…..so hybrid would help with the costs.

Those so called horizontal flares on the front grill are called Air Shutters. They open and close depending on cooling demand. When the shutters are closed, the aerodynamic drag is slightly lower than when open, to achieve a slightly higher electric range.

Great review as always. What is the current rebate in Ontario? I don’t think m50 is qualified.?

There is ZERO rebate in Ontario for the M50 version of this car, unfortunately. No Provincial and no Federal.

Mine is coming this summer. Reserved it last August. Signed off on the build in February. Will hope to reto fit the 50th anniversary M roundels afterwards. Also isn't this one the mettallic portimao blue. That's not the frozen matte paint. I got the metallic portimao blue with cognac interior with carbon fiber trim.

Cool color indeed. I just miss my 2006 325i manual. Back when BMW's had good styling, awesome interiors, and were a joy to drive. I know this is electric so it will drive and feel different, but the styling to me is kinda meh (the grill is obnoxious and the rear end taillights remind me of the Acura TLX. BMW's used to have those artfully shaped gauge binacles-the square digital screen looks like the Hyundai/Kia electric vehicles. /nostalgic rant But aside from that, GREAT review as always!

BMW is taking reservations for this, can't get till late 2023.

It's Portimao Blue Metallic - in the video we incorrectly said it was the Frozen Portimao.

1) looks like Portimao Blue Metallic, not Matte…. 2) the CLAR platform was always shared for both ICE and BEV drivetrains. 3) the tunnel is full of batteries - so is a good use of the space 4) a bespoke platform isn’t required

Yea many people don't understand but the CLAR platform wasn't gas and converted for Ev. It was always meant to be for both gas and EV. But the Neue Klasse in 2025 will be EV solely.

The platform is not "gass powered" or designed for ICE cars. The platform is hybrid, intentionally so, because BMW wanted to save money and be able to produce both types of cars in the same production line. There's info about these platforms on the Internet. It's true we'd like them not to have the transmission tunnel using space in the interior, but that's a side effect, a compromise, due to the hybrid nature of it.

To those saying it’s not toss able watch the video on my channel. I had the opportunity to drive it on an autocross course and I was blown away how well it braked and corned for weighing 5k+ extremely impressed and couldn’t recommend enough.

This is why I need to by a hemi while I still can. Lol.

@@IceTeaF00t nah, thats much darker. Tanzanite blue is very dark in dim light and deep blue in sunlight.

I just ordered an i4 M50 a few days ago in the Toronto area, but who knows when it'll arrive :( I was quoted 6-8 months :(

Always love your energy in your reviews. I still think BMW has forgotten how to make a car not look ugly on the front but at least it looks normal everywhere else. The interior looks... kinda cheap for the asking price. The screen looks very tacked on last minute. Also, very surprised there's no leather stitching or more premium materials at this price point. Nothing really says "hey, I'm special". Also, I'm sure it doesn't qualify for rebates in Canada since the base MSRP is over $50k. Otherwise, a solid EV. Would have been nice to have a PHEV because I still think full EVs aren't worth it yet.

Leather interior is pretty much standard in this car, Vernasca leather that is. You can also get Merino leather, which is actually nicer. As for the looks, that's subjective of course, but I think that it looks a lot better in person than in pictures or video. Regarding it feeling special or not, I think it feels typical BMW. It's not more or less special once you're inside than a regular 3 series G20. Actually, in terms of standard features and luxury, this car beats the 3 series by quite a lot, as it comes with a lot more equipment included than the 3/4 series does. I know this because I own a G21 and have tried the M50, and they feel just the same inside the cabin.

The acceleration in this car is mental. You are going to be replacing your tires every year. Even the 40 is 5.7secs and the 35 is 6secs. The 50 doesn't get the Canadian Fed rebate. The 35 and 40 does.

Nice color indeed! But it is not frozen Portimao. The M performance badges exist on many non M single digit BMW cars. It should be a common knowledge by now. Ie X7 M50 X6 M50 and so on. It’s a great GT car. Not a race track car such as M4 or M3. Maybe a iM4 will be launched later.

This review is excellent. I wouldn't normally look at a BMW review because I'm not a fan of the unreliable brand. Yes, they're fun to drive but I'd prefer a car to last more than 3 yrs. Maybe now, with no engine and all battery, BMW can score some points on reliability!! P.S. Mike could review a Yugo and with his style, persuade us all to buy one. 🚙

My 335xi (with much maligned N54) turns 15 in less than a year and my X5 is 11. I've had 7 BMWs in the last 25 years, so my sample size is probably bigger than yours. If you did in fact ever own one, maybe you should have considered getting a decent mechanic who know what they were doing.

Bit too negative. Nitpik? I'm coming from a manual transmission Audi A5. Pleasure to drive during test and on autocross. EV using mostly one pedal much closer to driving a manual...

the colour is not FROZEN....

It ends up costing 90k plus tax in canada and qualifies for no rebates and has limited charging options on long trips, so still a failure in canada and you can get a real m car if that's what you want for less.

This is an awesome car. It looks good. I love it but would not buy it. Being an Electrical Engineer / Master Electrician, it insults my intelligence to purchase a car with a brush type motor. Mark my words, BMW shall bitterly regret the decision to let down this Master Piece with such an unreliable motor

Compare to Model 3... this BMW i4 M50 is MORE EXPENSIVE. Slower speed, useless rear seat with Gas car Hump, Speakers not as good as Tesla and need to pay $875 extra, Cargo space is less than Model 3, no front trunk, less Miles, No Dog mode, less Tech, cannot auto drive as good as Tesla..... I'm waiting BMW to come out a TRUE EV plateform Sedan... like what they did with iX..... No waste space like this i4
