2022 4AGE 16v 1600cc Hillclimb Starlet Introduction

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Introductional walkaround with lots of technical details and in-depth close-up video on our 1980 KP62 Hillclimb Toyota Starlet.
This is 2022 specification we run currently in hillclimbs around Europe including some FIA European Championship rounds and German KW Berg-Cup.
Racing history with this car goes back over 20 years. Owner and builder Mikko Kataja built the car in the early 2000 for rally grp F in Finland and rallied several years before moving to time attack and circuit racing and later to hillclimbs. Car was run first time in KW Berg-Cup 2013/2014 and 2014 Mikko won rookie of the year title and second place in the 1600cc class with the old 5k 8V engine and more or less rally specification against purpose build hillclimb machines.
2016 this car conquered Pikes Peak with it's new built 4AGE 16V engine and year later Mt Washington hillclimb in New Hampshire. So we can say that the car has a very unique history seeing winter rallies in Finland, wheel to wheel road racing and time attack and later some really extreme hillclimbs around the world.
There has been so many different evolutions of the car over the years that it would take hours to explain the whole story. Anyway what remains still original is the chassis including the rollcage that was fabricated 2001-2002 by Mikko like the rest of the car. The car was Mikko's final thesis on the racecar mechanics studies. Remarkable is also that no matter where the car has raced, sometimes against much faster cars on the paper it has always succeeded and the throphy collection is quite diverse.

    Thanks, yeah i was thinking it would be easiest to do something like this as i get quite a lot of questions what has been done to the car. Ended up filming the car and warmup really spontaniously without much planning and realized when editing could have done some things different, but maybe we will do part 2 at some point with even more indepth look on the electronics etc as there is so much more than the quick look in this video... Maybe then i could also explain not just film and write some details on the footage.

    Thx for the sneak peek! I like how you keep it competition ready, not showroom ready, this is no garage queen. I feared the worst for suspension, but was surprised, that high spec performance and yet the chassis is kept so original the suspension could be swapped back to 100% OEM almost overnight. That commands my respect, it speaks volumes about a very thought out, carefully modified, out of the box (in a different sense) suspension setup. A rare feat in a day and age where most people massacre the car until there's nothing other than outer shell resembling an old Toyota, and they won't EVER see the performance this car is putting out.

  • @VHTRacing

    Thanks, yes this car still somewhat resembles the original Starlet many ways. So not just a tube frame racecar Starlet look a like. Many things are kept true to original car due to regulations, but I think it is also what brings the challenge and joy on the whole thing. When you beat some serious cars with this “old car” you can say yes still has a solid rear axle, yea still has the original McPherson front suspension and yes firewall is intact etc. let’s see what the future brings to this car. Next update is going to be a big one, but I think stays still true to the nature of this car.

  • @VHTRacing

    @VHTRacing

    Жыл бұрын

    I did not mention anything on it in this video, but you can see all internal parts on the full engine rebuild series of this engine i did few years ago. I'm using MRP girdle on this engine with the original caps and ARP studs. I'm not 100% happy with that solution and if i would ever start from scratch again with the 4AGE i would make something different, it's not that it wouldnt be beefy enough, but something to save weight and also lover the oil pan even more would help. Every 100 gram counts on these cars and if you could save a kilo from the engine it would be huge.

    @@VHTRacing Thank you so much for the info. The MRP girdle is actually the one that had my eye- So thats quite interesting to hear. However my goal isnt to build a 11-12k RPM beast haha. Also super interesting to know theyre the standard caps!

  • @VHTRacing

    @VHTRacing

    Жыл бұрын

    @@SidewaysGts it was quite a process to get the girdle sit correctly and also to get the main tunnel straight and correct size what i wanted. We needed to machine the block and the caps etc and finally line bore/hone. I would not recommend using such girdle even on some over 200hp builds, like typical rally engines which are not dry sumps and wont spin anyway much over 9000. They do not need it, for a light street engine with some mods definitively not needed.

The barrels and barrel bodies are Aluminium and I also got the trumpets 3D printed in proper filament that can be used for structural automotive parts. What you need to do, is make a road car version, and put it into production, to rival the Porsche Restomod market!!! Still miss my Starlet ... it's the best car in the world!

    256bhp from a 4age, Jesus Christ. Imagine an aw11 built to this level, I wonder if it would be faster if it could still be brought down to the same ~700kgs

  • @VHTRacing

    @VHTRacing

    Hard to say, in theory the mr2 aw11 should be better platform what comes to weight distribution and center of gravity height. I think you could get them better in the mr2, but also our Starlet is not bad i have put a lot of effort to get the weight distribution better and lower the cg as much as possible. Never driven mr2's myself, been just a passenger on short rides and it feels also quite nice, but might be that depending on the course and type of road these two cars could have their positives and negatives. One of the fastest home built hillclimb cars in europe in my opinion is Manuel Dondi's Fiat X 1/9 it is with a 2l na engine incredible. It is low and wide and has crazy cornering speeds. When i saw that i actually thought could the mr2 be similar if properly built. Search him in KZread and you will be amazed if you dont know that car already. Anyway i think the car and driver needs to fit also together, even if some car is faster on paper it doesnt mean it will be faster on 17km up to Mt Bondone...
