Cool video, I've only just found your channel. I actually own a Zero S and I absolutely love it. The instant power on tap is addictive. The lack of maintenance is really good and I don't annoy my neighbours when setting off early in the morning. My previous bike was a BMW F650GS 800 Twin which I really liked but the bills were getting more and more expensive and there were a few big jobs coming up on it. I test rode one of these and I was hooked. Yes, they are expensive, but I bought an unregistered ex-demo bike with fitted charge tank (faster charging) for £9,995. I had said to myself that 14k was too much but if I saw one for under 10k I would have it😀. Plus the 5 year battery warranty started from the day I bought it so its like a new bike anyway. The range is approx 100 miles. I have done quite a few trips of over 200 miles and it is doable, but you do have to plan where to stop and charge, plus have a backup plan in case of a problem with the charger. I tend to stop with 30% remaining to allow for some wiggle room. I have also fitted Pelican cases to the bike so I can do some limited touring, but I am toying with the idea of picking up a Royal Enfield Himalayan or Benelli TRK 502 to do some proper long distance touring. As for the height, I am also 5ft 7" but have a 29" inside leg. I got the supplying dealer to drop the rear suspension by 25mm and I have also fitted the Zero touring screen and bar risers which has transformed the ride for me. Ideally I want an electric bike that will do 150+ miles at motorway speeds, charge up in less than half an hour, and cost less than 15k. But realistically it will be several years before that is achievable. Now I thought that I could sit around and wait for this mythical bike to come out, or bite the bullet and buy one of these now. I don't regret my purchase at all.

I've had a 2018 Zero SR (14kw + charge tank) for 4 years now. There is no better 'daily commuter'. Quiet. Quick. Nimble. Silent. No shifting in traffice. No holding the clutch at red lights. Perfection. It does have (1) Achilles heel though, range. You simple can't take it out of town. (It has a 70 hwy range at 70mph + 4 hour charge time on level 2 charger). I am 100% happy with mine because I only need/want 100% a commuter bike.

Great review of the Zero S. I have had a 21 Zero DSR for about 1 yr. now . What you can't see in videos is the quality of build and components which justify the price for me. I have had many bikes, and this bike has the best brakes of any I've owned , and only 1 disc up front ! You really have to behave riding this as all other vehicles move like 🐌 snails . Being silent adds another element of watchfullness as pedestrians and cars can barely hear you. I have had it stop traffic with drivers amazed at what they are seeing. Quite revolutionary . Definitely the future

I plan to buy Zero S 14.4 but worrried about no fast charger at public charge stations. I think the basic model they offered me has no Charge tank installed. I have to travel 250km at Europe and needs a Type 2 fast charge option. (I live in Hungary and Type 2 AC is common here.)

Just wondering - do all Zero S models have the option to charge with a faster plug, akin to public chargers? I'd love to have one but would want the extra range of the power tank - so could I still charge quickly with the larger battery, or is it one or the other?

This would be fine for shorter journeys with around 90 miles per charge, other than that the range would still be a big problem for most folk that like bike tours. Very clean and maintenance easy.. but again the cost of ownership compared to a much cheaper petrol equivalent doesn't really make it worth it unless like I said short daily commutes.

Hi Mark hope you're well. Nothing wrong with your review and previous reviews of yours has got me wanting the said bike. However this bike limits the freedom of motorcycling which is the very essence of the hobby. Four of us have just completed a 1800 mile tour of Scotland and if one rider would have been riding this bike he would have been a day behind us with the need to charge twice a day. Sorry but i will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the Electric era.

Great review as usual Mark. I have been trying to find out what the import tax is importing one of these motorcycles from the USA to the UK. Unfortunately i was unable to find it. In the back of my mind i think it is 25%. Which is a lot the other thing is there are so fewer moving parts in an electric motor compared to a normal combustion engine. They should really be a lot cheaper. Thank you.

Hi Mark, your video and riding style is excellent. I have my Zero SR ZF14.4 from past 2 years,, 1200 miles on it, only ridden local streets to practice enough before going on highways. However, leaning this bike is feeling very scary as I feel the bike will skid outside from under my body when trying to lean at 35 mph in a 45 mph limit short/sharp turn or bend. What body position are you using when leaning this bike with such confidence? Specially when you said in the video that you are riding an electric bike for the very first time. Please advise, how to gain more and more confidence on this machine even after 1200+ miles. thank you.

Love these bikes. The range really doesn't bother me since my commute to work 12 miles one way. My problem is the huge price tag. I just specced one out on the Zero website and I'm looking at $13,890 before dealer and registration fees. That's a huge price tag for a low range niche bike. When compared to other naked bikes on the market, I can get an AMAZING bike from any of the big 4 for nearly $4,000 less.

Thanks Mark. I agree with most the comments here. Top speed needs to be higher. But then... it's really not a touring bike is it. Overall performance seems good enough based upon your comments. The really big issues are available public charging stations and time to charge. No one is going to wait more than five minutes for a charge and still buy one imo. Consequently, the people at Zero have really deep pockets to have gone down this road. They are clearly forcing an idea more than the reality of it. They have been around several years now and still going at it. Likely waiting for battery technology to catch up with their program. Gord

Obviously this will be the future but the charging infrastructure for all electric vehicles needs to be made a priorty and standardising and not the haphazzard way it is done now. Great commuter machine no doubt but on a long journey then you would probably need to carry a charging lead and somewhere to charge it, so still a bit of a way to go yet. For a commuter or urban rider who is buying the bike for the long term and where charging it is straightforward (drive, garage etc) and the daily mileage is within the bike's range this would be far better than a petrol bike because it costs so little to run and is virtually maintenance free and very reliable. I think it is a nice looking, tasteful machine and it looks very well made. I have belt drive on my current petrol bike - it is the best - cheap, light and reliable. I recently bought an electric car. I love it and I would never go back. Internal combustion engine cars seem so over complicated and old fashioned. I still like real classics though but modern cars are silly anachronisms. Mind you, given the amount of traffic, cars will soon be a thing of the past -Not so electric two wheelers though !

I went to a bike show in Peterborough yesterday & Zero were there, I did want a test ride on the SR/S but they were fully booked up.. While I was walking back to where I’d parked my bike a group of them rode by me, obviously I didn’t here them coming while I was walking along the road, my first thoughts were because of how quiet they are, is this potentially makes them much more dangerous while out riding on the roads! They are also far too expensive, & the real world range is in my opinion very poor! I can’t imagine much involvement from a riding perspective either - compared to a normal motorcycle, being just basically a twist & go… I think what I’m basically saying is I’ll be sticking with internal combustion, with much rider involvement & a glorious soundtrack to boot, with the added benefit of unlimited range. 😎 👍🏻

I don't know if the 'S' has 'custom' mode, but the engine braking (regenerative braking, charging the battery) can be adjusted to suit your tastes. 100% is too much for smooth riding with a pillion, but in the twisties it's fine and makes a big difference to the battery range. "sport' mode actually has less regen (braking) because you're expected to use the brakes for better control.

On the A1 category is really targeted at teenagers - the price is likely to be a real issue here. £2 per 100 miles approx is good, but price will be a barrier to entry for the target market. The 86 MPH might open up to the A2 class holders - but the reality is a Suzuki GSX 125S will do 70 MPH, and 100 MPG and is a fraction of the cost. As others have said. Otherwise Chinese will soon compete with these as they already had bike experience in asia.
