2021 vs 2020 Toyota Supra - Which One Is Better?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2021 Toyota Supra arrives at dealers this June. It comes with an upgraded engine, revised suspension, updated steering tuning and a host of other minor improvements. However, some 2020 owners have said that the updated engine making 382hp and +3 ft-lbs has them feeling left out.
We decided to set the records straight and directly compare a stock 2020 Toyota Supra against a 2021 Supra on the same roads back to back. We tested the handling, suspension and the engine. To see how quick the 2021 is, we pitted it against a tuned 2020 Supra with a downpipe and E30 fuel.
Find out if the 2021 is as good as Toyota claims!

    This car is simply wonderful I just received mine from Austria it took me 3 months to get this car here to Seattle Washington but it was worth every minute of waiting it's incredible the way you accelerate and brake and you don't even feel it it's very delicate when it comes to accelerate and brake. I have the 2021 Supra GR and they did a wonderful job with the exterior design . and yes I do feel the difference between the 2020 and 2021 . Great video

    Hey Eric!! Great review man! That’s coming from your fellow A90 nitro yellow bro haha! I appreciate how you include a tuned A90 in this comparison. Most people do not realize that the A90 has so much untapped potential from the factory! As the after market community continues to tinkle with Ecutek and racerom I anticipate the A90 will continue to impress and surpass expectations. It looks like shops are figuring out how to dial in full E85 tunes now. I love my 2020 and I am sure the 2021 owners will love their cars. It is an amazing build by Toyota! I am still learning about this car a few thousand miles in. We need to do that photoshoot Eric! ;) As for the whole bumpstop issue people talk about, I have never experienced this issue and I push this car to its limit pretty often. -Ron

    I had the 2021 at pretty ridiculous speeds in the canyons the day after but the footage was not good so it didn’t make the final cut. Suspension wise there is minimal difference. It’s mainly just a very mild update to the dampers to give them more rebound and a little more roll stiffness. I had my 2020 on the track today and it’s such a joy to drive fast. It’s a wildly capable chassis. Here’s my session from today. Only my second time at this track and second time on track with the Supra but it’s extremely easy to control. The suspension in these cars is fantastic. Here’s my session kzread.info/dash/bejne/haqho5ePZ5fJgMo.html

    I've owned them both. The 2021, feels lot quicker, it handles better as well. The 2020 model has more low down torque but doesn't pull as hard through the mid and upper range. The steering on the 2021 feels more direct as well.

  • @LearningFast
    @LearningFast4 жыл бұрын

    The biggest difference is the lower compression ratio and the additional high rpm torque. Below 5,000 rpm the torque is almost identical. However, above 5,000 rpm the torque is over 40 lb ft more for the 2021 model. If you are trying to compare them below 5,000 rpms there won’t be a significant difference. However, on a track once you are out of 1st gear you will be around 5k rpms or more most of the time. The 2021 will shine then. Also the lower compression ratio of the 2021 will allow much higher boost pressures without knocking. It will be easier to tune on normal pump gas.

  • @revmatchtv

  • @LearningFast

    @LearningFast

    4 жыл бұрын

    RevMatchTV no problem. It is an easy thing to get confused on. I really think the compression ratio difference needs to be explored more. There are only two other turbocharged cars being produced right now that have a compression ratio of 11:1 or higher. Neither of those cars are known for being easy to modify without changing that compression ratio. However, there are some people with the ECUtek tune that are getting 560+ lb ft without changing anything that would reduce knock or predetonation. That honestly should be impossible with an 11:1 compression ratio and pump 93 octane gas. That is the highest torque per liter of any production vehicle ever made currently. Something just doesn’t add up there. Either these cars are going to blow up after so many launches or they aren’t really producing that much torque on 93 octane pump gas. Can you do another Supra video that digs into this more?

    Toyota isn't too specific about the suspension revisions, are they? I'd like to know what they did with 2022 suspension revisions. Do you feel that 2021 traction control intervenes sooner than 2020? Do you think Toyota made revisions to the eDiff?

  • @revmatchtv

    @revmatchtv

    Here is what Toyota said about the 2021 changes: "The Supra 3.0 chassis was also tweaked heading into its second year of production. Lightweight aluminum braces were added to increase lateral rigidity, along with front and rear bump stops and new damper tuning. Revised programming for the electric power steering (EPS), Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Active Differential made the Supra more stable through quick transitions, such as compound turns." 2022 is has no mechanical differences from the 2021 as I understand it, but there are programming changes. Here are the 2023 changes: "To counter the possibility of “snap-off” oversteer - something that may be hard to control with the car’s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) alone - an Anti-Roll Program (ARP) has been adopted for both the manual and automatic versions of the GR Supra. This intervenes at an earlier point with the VSC to cover any sudden loss of grip when the car’s high-response suspension setting it used. In addition, the Track mode has been tuned to allow for easy drifting with freedom of throttle control. The vehicle remains agile, but there is less risk of spinning thanks to specific engine and torque control." To answer your question, in the 2021 TC intervenes more seamlessly and and the car feels more planted overall. There are some other minor adjustments to valving, spring rate, sway bars and VSC that keep improving every year, but the big change was for 2021. For 2023 the VSC is at Porsche levels of refinement when I drove it on track.

    I've seen i think 2 or 3 racing drivers ( Robert Mitchell is one of them ) talking about 2020 supra issue with the rear suspension , the car suffered form a huge bumpsteer , the rear wheels change the toe from toe in to toe out during compression and decompression which is huge change in car dynamic . I think that's why toyota had to redesign it .

  • @revmatchtv

    Yes, Robert made a whole video on it. It's a complete non-issue at sub 100mph speeds. I've tracked mine too and I disagree that there is bump steer. The rear end is lively, but I don't think there are significant toe changes that he is claiming. He did not put in on an alignment machine to show us. The behavior he mentions can be dialed out with SPL end links.

    Great review, and as 2020 owner, the question is, with aftermarket parts we can match the 2021, and it seems to be the case. As you said, would be interesting to see how the 2021 engine respond to mods. I am about to go for the Pure800 turbo and maybe port injection, that for sure will make more power on the top end and above 500 whp with pump 91 gas. More compression means more power but also make it easier to knock, while the 10:1 of the 2021 will allow more boost, I would like to think that the higher compression could get good gains with meth. Let's see. Still 500 whp for the size and weight of this car, is more than enough to have fun and to get into trouble.

  • @revmatchtv

    @revmatchtv

    With that setup you will make LOADS of power. The pure800 is good for about 100hp alone. It’s an easy install too. You can surpass the 2021 in power with nothing but a tune. Due to time constraints, I failed to include a 4th car which was tune only. It was much much faster than the 2021.

    I find heads up drag racing comparisons completely useless. Different reaction times, driving styles, etc etc, there are just TOO many factors that change the results. I find more use in seeing multiple runs by the same driver using some type of GPS timer(then use an average), and even compare some dyno results(I have seen 388 to the wheels on the stock 21) Having said that, I would agree that most typical drivers would not likely know the difference, but if someone is indeed considering tracking the car, the 21 chassis/motor updates give you a better place to start. Having said that, having driven the 2020, and know several people with them, there should be no regrets in owning them, as the mods are plentiful.

    Unfortunately too little time was available with this car to test. I’ve driven the 2020 on track a few tiles and ultimately if you decide that’s something you want to pursue you’ll modify the car anyway. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the 2020 despite what Robert Mitchell will have you believe. Having driven both back to back, I would doubt there is much significant difference in track behavior as the suspension differences boil down to minor tuning changes.

    If the car has relatively bad rod placement to the control arms, like the previous 2020 model does, even if the track is smooth it will slip out on rolls, hills or even on braking and accelerating due to weight transfer as it's not a race car. People have driven 2020 model on track and it still does exhibit pretty bad bumpsteer on tracks when most car that suffer that on road tend not to on tracks. Idk about you but I don't think driving 50mph or so on a slightly curvy road is a good enough meteric to see if a car is stable mate. If someone is drivin fast enough, it might slip out and be the end of them.

    mrjj if you’re paying MSRP it’s absolutely worth the $500 premium. The updated engine is likely to have more tuning potential. The suspension differences are minimal. The ride quality is the same. Other journalists drove them a year apart. I specifically wanted to drive them back to back. Matt Maran Motoring and Albon have a similar position to mine. I took a lot of care to be as unbiased as I could be and drove them on the same roads within minutes of each other. I explained the differences in the video as best as I could without going into endless detail. Right now 2020 models are going for $48-49k. Is the 2021 worth a $9k premium over a 2020 at a discount? Absolutely not. Is the 2021 a better car overall? Yes it is. It’s a very nice incremental upgrade, but this is not like the Mustang going from the 4.6 to the Coyote.
