I have had mine for three months now and it is the best car I ever owned. It's fast, fun to drive, stylish. In the winter with snow on the road the range around 200 Km. But then I drive like I had stolen the car. Now with dry roads, the range is far better, still with the winter tires. I will change wheels on Thursday and expect the range to be even better. And, google assistant works perfectly. I just ask it to "take me to Nygatan 25 in Södertälje" and in a second I have the map ready. I dont even have to say "please".

thanks very much for well rounded review. it is somewhat surprising that the infotainment has these android phonelike sub menus considering how well it is implemented in the polestar 2. but maybe they will get some updates for better usability ota. one question though: is it known how soon after launch that lower spec xc40 p8's will become available. I really lust for a xc40 p8 but the first launch model price tag is a bit on the high side

Bought the XC40 full electric, then had to drive through France to the UK. 1400 kilometres. The real range on the motorway, speed steady at 115km/hour, was a maximum of 200km. Basically driving for 1h 45 mins, then having to stop for 40 mins to charge the battery. It is unusable for long drives. The range advertised by Volvo is 400km, which is completely untrue. I have now sold it.

Over at SwedeSpeed Forum a few guys who wanted more range than 208 miles (EPA) for the XC40 P8 are saying they'll just go ahead and buy the XC40 PHEV and wait a few years for the BEV range to improve. They all said that their daily drive would usually be less than the XC40's PHEV's all-electric range, and Volvo says that their PHEVs are driven 83% in 'Pure" or all electric mode anyway. Also, Volvo has said that all their BEV XC40 P8 production for 2020 has already been sold, so if you order one it will be next year. ...... As for me, I'm waiting for the BEV XC90 P8, out in a couple of years. Rumors are that SPA2 will have a 120 kWh battery, and the XC90 P8 will be a coupe-like SUV for better aerodynamics. It will not use Siemens electric motors, like the XC40 and Polestar 2, but an in-house electric motor that will be more efficient. So expecting a 300+ mile range for the XC90 P8 is not unreasonable. I can't wait.

When you close the doors, you can simply reach at normal hand/arms height instead of bending low to reach the doors to close them. 3. almost no buttons in the tesla, everything is controlled on the big ipad, eventhough the xc40 also has a touch screen, but there are still plenty of controls that are still old fashioned buttons and knobs. with the big ipad, you need to look away from the road and look at the ipad to make any changes. not safe. and lastly, 4. the air vents in the tesla seem to be pointing exactly at my eye level. it could be just me but driving the tesla (model y) with the air blowing into my eyes, not fun. i later heard that it could've been adjusted via the big ipad... so maybe it's not a big issue, but i prefer to adjust the vents manually at the vents, not thru a big ipad... oh and one last thing, the volvo rated range at 208 miles, but real world range seems to be higher. model y rated at 300 miles, but real world range is only around 250. so they are comparable in range eventhough not on paper.......

I noticed there used to be so many likes on Rebecca’s review when she was part of the channel. Were people following her instead of the channel, and liked her instead of her reviews? Well, I liked both and I still like the channel and the reviews. We recently have What Car India channel join the KZread. And just like yours, it has amazing content with my favorite anchor, Mugdha Mishra who was with other channel previously. Though, there needs a lot of improvement in the content but the presentation is class apart and conform with the What Car standards. Keep up your amazing review. It’s really interesting to see Volvo joining the league of accessible EVs. Not sure when this car will be launched in India or perhaps will never be launched given Volvo has still not established a firm ground in the country. Competition is ramping up and has become even fierce with luxury automakers bringing their international products to India, some of which are launched first in India itself while others been launched just a few months before international. Volvo seriously need to re-evaluate its position in India for its existence in the country.

It's a good car but we have to keep in mind is this isn't Volvo's electric platform full electric car. Neither is the Polestar 2. These are both shared-with-hybrids models. A less expensive, full platform Volvo that's a bit smaller is expected though when it will be introduced is unclear. An xc90 sized full-electric Volvo platform is also going to be introduced but the exact time is not known. It's probably some time next year. As is, the xc40 still has carry-over legacy from the regular XC40 platform as does the Polestar 2 which is on the same platform. The car is a compromise.

I don't understand the obsession with range. How many people drive far enough to exceed the range regularly? Most people drive 10/20 miles to work and then wake up with a full fuel "tank". And, tbh how many households buying this car won't already have another vehicle, (probably ICE) anyway? There are just as many differentiators in an electric car as a traditional one. How many xc40 petrol reviews mention a Kia as a competitor? I fear motoring journalists are going to make themselves less relevant by not reviewing the real world use cases and instead concentrating on why this electric car isn't a petrol car. A criticism of the industry, not this specific review.

Why do you guys keep hammering about "how far on one charge"? Not very many drive for more than 3 hours in one go anyway. And how many drive > 150 miles on a regular basis? For long trips you need to look at the combination of range, charging speed and charging network. The e-tron for example charges really, really fast, so even if the range in just OK, it does not matter that much... Look at Bjørn Nyland and his 1000km challenge. That's how you properly measure long distance travel.

I remember reading an interview where a Volvo representative explained how the engine adds so little to the total cost of the car on the manufacturing end (compared to the electrification) that it doesn't really matter. If that's true, it makes sense to go with the more beefed-up powertrain as it's just more fun, more enduring and more appealing to the business class.

Why on earth does a car like this need x2 201bhp engines? Get rid of one of the engines, replace freed up space with a few more battery cells and get 7.5 sec 0-60 performance (still respectable) and 300+ mile range (very desirable). Oh and maybe re-think the price tag to broaden your accessible market - current lease deals are horrendous! Overall, a lovely quality car with kerb appeal being held back by performance junkies in engineering trying to imitate a race car.... 95% of current and future EV owners are environmentally conscientious and want quality products with efficient running costs. How many real world driving scenarios do you ever go from a standing start to 60mph?!? Come on Volvo, seize the opportunity to make a difference!

  • @vomErsten

I agree with you. Volvo is having an identity crisis right now; on the one hand they go "SAFETY BEFORE EVERYTHING!" and introduce 112 MPH speed limiters but on the other hand they go and build a 402 HP electric car that can do 0-60 in under 5 seconds...why? So you can 0-62 yourself into a tree after mashing it on some ice? And on a model that is the antithesis of high performance, no less. It's almost like they are trying to make themselves irrelevant next to Polestar.

This is ridiculously expensive. Compared to a Polestar interface it is so dated; has a small boot and thirsty range does not make it appealing.
