2021 Toyota Yaris Cross Review - a hybrid SUV that's fun to drive?!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2021 Toyota Yaris Cross is a small family SUV that's designed to trundle along economically with its hybrid powertrain while also proving fun to drive when you get to a twisty road. Can Toyota deliver? Join me for a full review and walkaround of this Ford Puma and VW T-Roc rival to see if Toyota's managed to make another killer Yaris…

    I don't get why ppl look down on a reliable car like this and buy European ''luxury'' cars with comments like ''oh the plastics are hard''... so what, are you gonna rub yourself on the plastic??. For European cars the running costs are huge, in 5 years all the luxury features will look irrelevant anyway and the reliability is sketchy to say the least... The only reason imo to choose a luxury car over this is if you can put it in expenses, leasing etc. and have tax benefits

    I agree, Europeans can keep their namby pamby luxury motors I'd much rather have a reliable motor that will give me many great year's of cheap motoring not ending up broken down on the road side or incurring expensive garage costs.

    Honestly bought one of these pick it up next week- safe starter family car, more efficient on petrol when you live in the city with EV mode. As a first time mum, I can tell anyone exposed Isofix is still hard to come by- we were looking between this and a Ford Puma and that was a big hitter for us, I don’t wanna search my hand in the seat to find the isofix points. Safety rating is amazing AND Toyotas are known for their reliability. Between the two, for me was a no brainier. My husband however wanted that manual, petrolhead feel of the Puma… once I explained the extra safety benefits and efficiency of the Yaris Cross he agreed that we would be better off becoming first time parents in this then the Puma which I think would work better for us in 5/6 years time. I loved driving this car- I took it out for test drives multiple times before buying it, so easy to drive, the hybrid functions are easy to understand and I don’t care if people say I’m boring driving it. I’m a 28 year old first time mum 🤷🏼‍♀️ it suits my life.

    There are people that want a fun car to not chug down fuel. There’s *dozens* of us ;) So I don’t think it’s irrelevant, and I’m glad Toyota is making efforts to make hybrids fun to drive.

    I think it looks well. It ticks all the right boxes for me, good fuel economy, good amount of space inside, lots of standard equipment and it looks really well. Those alloy wheels look class and the interior is good, it’s well built, it’s not going to break and that’s the main thing.

    Good honest review - keep it up as it ticks all the boxes. One suggestion is camera movement which is a bit rapid, I am not sure what it is but I assume you tend to film as you see it; however, on screen it comes over as too fast in the movement. The Luxury Travel Expert on YT has iPhone filming off to an art as he recognises this and camera movement reflects the audience, not his eyes ability to take it in and film. Just trying to help so you can enhance your already good reviews!

    Test drove this twice and it’s a very good car with great fuel economy also, the optional City Pack and Panoramic Roof are reasonably priced however, in the end, I chose an automatic Ford Puma ST Line X mainly for a little bit more passenger space, the smoother ride and more fun to drive IMO 👍 Wasn’t a fan of the split boot floor compared to Puma and getting in and out of rear seats was just too awkward, still worth consideration though and apparently Toyota offer a 10 year warranty if you continue to service with them.........Great review 👏

    A lot of journalists get the CVT in Toyota’s hybrids wrong. Part of it is Toyota’s fault for having CVT in the name (they try to differentiate by calling it eCVT). But it’s just a single planetary gear set to tie the engine and motors together. No changing gears or CVT pulleys+belt. Just the motor changing speed to force the engine into the required rpm. It’s much simpler than a conventional transmission and therefore very robust and reliable.

  • @hedgehogthesonic3181

    @hedgehogthesonic3181

    Yeah, they need to do research on that before doing the videos, in no way Toyota hybrids use a conventional and unreliable CVT, the design Toyota uses in their hybrids is far superior in every single way.

    The Toyota eCVT is the best CVT ive ever used. I am a big fan of CVTs, I have a Subaru Outback which is fantastic but its nowhere near as smooth as the Toyota with having the steel belt, although its pretty impressive all the same, I have no hesitancy and it accelerates quickly. Perhaps Subaru will upgrade their system eventually though, who knows.

    Nice review ! Good comparisons too ! Had it been a 4-cylinder engine, the noise would have been less. The one-and-a-half exhaust pulses per revolution is noisier then two exhaust pulses per revolution, as in the case of the 4-cylinder engine.. While this does not matter in a GR Yaris, it makes the difference in a commuter vehicle. Trinidad & Tobago. West Indies.

    Considering Toyota have had time to see what was on the market, this vehicle seems to me to be a let down and why would anyone buy it? Over 25 thousand pounds for this ? - No chance.

    This car looks good and trendy from the outside and I like that a lot, but move inside and its plasticky and cheap with door handles that look and feel like they were made from recycled coffee cups only more fragile and nastier, and how you managed to squeeze yourself into the rear seats I will never know as the doors open wide enough for a toddler to get in and out of at best, not to mention the fact that its noisy and not that wonderfull on the old petroleum, get yourself a new Honda HRV and revel in its luxury compared to one of these, couple of grand more I know, but worth every penny, that's what I did!

    I wonder how you (6 ft 3) managed to show some legroom in the back... In my view neither the Yaris Cross nor the "standard" Yaris seem made for a family. When you see how limited the space in the rear seats is and how much (or better: little) the rear doors open, you wonder what the designers had in mind here. If I (with my just over 6 ft) had to sit behind myself and squeezed myself through that crack, I poke my knees into the driver's seat. Check out here how a person (6 ft 2) "sits" in the back seat: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k5iursebd7a0mso.html (from 3: 54) Compare the space, especially in the back, with a Honda Jazz or Jazz Crosstar. Here a video with the same 6 ft 2 person in a Jazz: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l2yeps2Rm82blKg.html (from 4: 42). They are 13.5 (Jazz) or 9 cm. Crosstar) shorter, 7 cm. narrower and have a 4 cm. shorter wheelbase. But... a lot more space and much better accessible! Unfortunately, you have about 85 liters of boot space less in the Honda's (if you did not know that in that empty space under the magic seats also fits a lot of junk, for example a foldable buggy... 😉). Guess what's the better choice for a (small) family... the Toyota Yaris Cross or maybe that Honda Jazz?

    While this is by no means the ugliest Toyota currently available (Rav 4 anyone?) it has to be said that their design department could really do with some new blood. After buying several Toyotas over the years and being delighted with their reliability, I eventually gave up after taking delivery of a Yaris a few years back - a visual and ergonomic nightmare. If a smaller company like Mazda can consistently come up with gorgeous designs, why can’t Toyota?
