NONE both are expensive and both aren't even all wheel drive and they're standard Japanese badges. Why bother when if you want a 2WD car it's much cheaper to get a hatchback, and if you want a 4WD car three words- Range Rover Evoque.

@@abirsanu There are plenty of desirable alternatives to these two cars. Range Rover Evoque is one of them, and actually it holds it's residual value really well but if you're so concerned about "reliability" also BMW has it's X series of proper 4X4s and Mercedes Benz has good 4X4s too. Nobody in their right mind would pay £30000+ for a Toyota or Honda. You wouldn't pay £80000 for a Nissan, Honda or Hyundai. These cars are expensive and don't make sense.

@@shanjanusman9974 "You wouldn't pay £80000 for a Nissan, Honda or Hyundai" Perhaps not in terms of an SUV, but the GT-R and NSX are good exceptions in terms of having mainstream badges on what are effectively supercars. As for BMW reliability, they don't really fare too well in surveys, and nor do Land Rover or Mercedes-Benz for that matter.

Doug missing key info as usual. The Excel is the most well spec'd trim in the Rav4. The Sr is not in the CRV, so you can get a memory seat in the EX trim of the CRV. Also, the Rav4 has no through loading. Quite an important point for a family utility vehicle, which was not acknowledged.

In the U.S. versions, the RAV 4 has fake leather seats which is a big downside for many. You mentioned the RAV 4 and CRV are both leather but is the RAV 4 actually? I know it was a cost-cutting measure here and though not a major factor for some, it wouldn't be something I'd want to have when the Honda and others offer the real thing.

Honda’s current hybrid cars no longer use a CVT. They have 2 electric motors. One is connected to the engine and is used as a generator while the 2nd is connected to the wheels. The main purpose of the engine is to generate electricity, but in some situations such as high speed cruising, it is more efficient for the engine to power the tires. The compact engine-linked clutch delivers power from the engine to the tires enabling low-fuel consumption driving. When you press the accelerator to pass at highway speed, the clutch decouples the engine from the wheels and the engine acts as a generator to produce more power.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work all too well. In lower speed city driving it lacks the engine boost of power, so it uses the engine to charge the battery almost constantly. At speeds of around 50mph it switches to the direct engine drive and uncouples the electric motor, but because it’s a single gear that is ratioed for direct drive at 50mph, so at speeds above that, the engine revs quite high and the result us that it actually uses more petrol than the estimates say. Real world MPH is about 25% less than tested. If you just drive 50mph the entire time on motorways, it’s fantastic, but most don’t.

What's in a name? Both hybrids can vary the ratio of engine speed to car speed continuously; so in that sense they have a "CVT." Neither has a pulley-based CVT, which is what can be unreliable. The RAV4's eCVT is mechanical; the rpms are split mechanically between a generator and the wheels. The "e" means that the electronics control this split. The CR-V has no mechanical transmission. The engine usually drives only the generator, and a similar split occurs entirely in electronics between the generator and the battery. In both cases, high revs occur under heavy loads because the engine is driving something else besides the wheels. And it seems nobody really understands EV mode. All of the energy ultimately comes from petrol. You aren't saving anything by running in EV, you are using excess energy generated earlier. and stored in the battery. The trick is, that it was generated more efficiently then. So the distance either SUV goes in EV mode is irrelevant; battery size only determines how much can be deferred.

CRV beat RAV4 in more reviews than just this What Car one. I know this because I am looking for a car for my wife (RAV4, CRV or a little older RX450h) and seen many of these reviews. Honda rides better and has more space. I won´t get into the looks department because the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The main thing is that you are happy with the car you bought, and why wouldn´t you be since this RAV4 is excellent.

I have recently purchased the same Cr-v as shown, sr 2wd in white. i brought it online,(sorry What car) a nervous experience due to the amount of money but with their already brilliant feedback, turned out great in the end. I managed to save £5500 on the car (with extra's) and £3300 by sorting out my own finance. I don't want car sales man blowing smoke up my bottom when saving that amount of money. I get around 42.3mpg from it and don't drive like a fairy, spends a lot of time in sports mode and does get a spanking lol. I owned a white 2013 sr 2.2 diesel before this (and a Honda Accord 2.2td tourer before that) which was far more economical. I really do like my Cr-v and is far better to drive than my old one. They both hold their value. It's just person preference at the end. If your looking for reliability, it doesn't matter which you buy. Yes you will have the usual tyres and brakes etc which cant be helped but that will by it. Not like bmw timing chains, turbos or service lights coming on, even though it was only in for a dealer service 6 weeks ago. Land Rover electrics play up. And who wants to pinch a Rav4 or Cr-v. Range Rover Evoque's go missing on a regular basis.

@@richardw5179 No its quite. On the accelerator pedal, when its pressed to the floor, it has like a kickdown button you'd find on an auto. If you press the pedal down to the button, but not pressing it. its gives you round 80% power and is not that noisy. It's when you go to the floor and the power goes round to 100% that it gets a little noisy but how often will that happen. I've now sold that and guess what? brought another lol. Another SR in white but it has AWD and the Aero body styling pack. Handles a lot better than my old front wheel drive hybrid, feels a lot more planted on the road.
