    15:10 For your info, in toyota hybrid system the 12V battery is not used to start the engine it only powers accessorry. The hybrid system use 2 electric motors MG1 and MG2 (motor/generator). Both are powered from the hybrid battery pack and MG1 is used to start the engine. This means that this car dosen't need a starter or an alternator as MG1 replaces both. The 12V battery is charged by an inverter converting the high voltage hybrid battery to 12V. Thank you for the review!

    @@MontyGumby It's a litle complex but basicaly MG1 is smaller and is used as a starter to start the combustion engine as you have no stater. It is also used to charge the high voltage battery when it's low similar to an alternator. MG2 is bigger and is used to move the car, it's also the only way to go in reverse as there is no reverse gear. MG2 simply spins backwards while MG1 recharge the HV battery if the enigne is running. There is an exception to that, if you go fast enough (highway speed), the combustion engine would spin too fast, in that case, MG1 is used to slow down the combustion engine RPM(they are connected to a planetory gear, too complex to explain here) and MG2 is used as a generator to feed power to MG1. This is why toyota hybrid are more efficient in city driving than highway, there is a loss from converting mecanical energy from the engine with MG2 and then sending it to MG1 when the car is above a certain speed. So basicaly, MG1 is connected to the engine and MG2 is connected to the wheels. This is necessary because let's say you are stopped in trafic for 5 minutes with your A/C ON. Your HV battery is feeding the A/C compressor and battery is running low, MG2 is connected to the wheels but your car is not moving so MG2 is not spinning, it cannot generate energy to charge the battery. MG1 on the other hand is connected to your engine, so it can start the engine wich while make MG1 spins and recharge your battery so your A/C keeps going and you don't empty your HV battery. Your car should never allow the battery to go below about 30%, you always need a reserve to make sure you can start the engine. For detailed info check WeberAuto youtube channel, he's very good, check for video about prius drivetrain.

    You can avoid having to use a pad under the floor cover if you remove everything from the spare tire well and just fill it up with a full sized tire and rim that’s taller than the little donut wheels. You can buy a compact universal tire change tool kit and inflator and velcro the travel case to the trunk floor so it does slide around. If the kit gets in the way when loading a bulky object, then temporarily move it to the rear seat floor. You can probably also stuff loose tire change tools in the spare tire shell with the wheel and just wrap them with something to prevent them from rattling. You could also skip the tools and rely on AAA to change the tire for you, but at least you will have a tire. If you only have the fix a flat kit and the puncture isn’t repairable, all AAA will be able to do is tow you. If it’s after hours for all the local tire shops, you will be stuck waiting until the next business day to get back on the road. This is much more practical than the fix a flat kit that doesn’t always work, ruins the TPM sensor and the tire. It’s also even better than getting a little donut tire that’s not safe at highway speeds especially when put on the front.

    Not sure if you're aware of this, however, blind spot monitoring and rear traffic cross alert are now available as a $500 option for the 2021 Corolla hybrid.

  • @braetonwilson4296

    I predict that almost all 2021 hybrids will have this 500 dollar option pre-installed. Whether you want it or not, you have to pay for it. Blind spot monitoring and rear traffic cross alert are nice but you're not supposed to rely on them. You're still supposed to manually check every time. So what's the point? I'll just check and save the money.

    Braeton Wilson, but what happens when you get tired/distracted (not that you text, but you are having a deep conversation with the passenger/s, you can’t do two things simultaneously - pay perfect attention to driving and to the conversation at the same time, your brain will decide which activity should be cut). Plus, if you pay $24k or $25k on a car, then $500 is not that significant, I would say it’s immaterial, so it’s worth it.

  • @braetonwilson4296

    @braetonwilson4296

    @@cosminmarincescu5457 You're right. $500 isn't much relatively speaking, especially for what you receive in return. However, if you can't depend on it and you still have to check manually every time, what's the point? Plus I've read reviews from people who have 2020 Corollas with the blind spot system who said it didn't work for them. They would have cars in their blind spot and the blind spot warning light wouldn't go on. Now that's scary and could lead to an accident. It's not the $500 that concerns me, it's getting used to the blind spot monitoring system and then the system failing on me, leading to multiple deaths.

Here is South Africa it's a problem owning a Toyota for their lack of security - judging from the light key, and the point about plastics above, I doubt that had been improved too. So the interior is very similar if not almost the same as the hatchback. I guess it's because the US only gets the SE and XSE hatchback trims. The hatchbacks overall just have nicer trim. Soft touch door panels. Piano black trim on the doors. Nicer seats.. just overall, it makes a big difference. The hatchbacks get the 2.0 liter engine for all models. The base 1.8 gas engine isn't available. It would have been interesting if Toyota made a 2.0 hybrid that made more power but also got 45+ mpg average. I'm not sure if there is a market for that though..

  • @joespittle1

    @joespittle1

    @Adam its also super slow and looks a bit nerdy, the hatch has improved the looks to ricer status, however, the interior quality is much better. This is most likely because the hybrid stuff cost extra money so they looked for other places to cut costs, plastics, insulation, etc.

    Are spare tires standard enough that all you have to say is “15 inch donut spare”. Don’t you have to worry about offset or anything like that? I ask, because I just bought a 2020 Corolla Hybrid and would be interested in buying a spare for it. Plus, I thought the 2020 Corolla (non-Hybrid) with 15” wheels comes with a 17” temporary spare. Wouldn’t that be the size to get then? Does the Hybrid have any additional clearance concerns for the spare over the non-Hybrid Corolla? I asked Toyota, and they refused to give me any information about a spare that would work.

    Makes zero sense to buy the donut spare. Then you have to buy the $300 Toyota foam support pad made for it. Just buy a full sized 15” tire and rim and then it won’t need a support pad under the trunk floor cover.

  • @braetonwilson4296

    $300 increase in MSRP (compared to 2020 Corolla hybrid) plus $500 safety package (most likely pre-installed in the majority of hybrids) plus pre-installed dealer options etc. When you add in sales tax, dealer fees, registration etc. you can easily spend 28k or even 30k in places with high demand like CA. If Corolla hybrids keep going up in price like this, people will start buying the much faster, more spacious, and more fun to drive Camry Hybrid instead. Especially since the Camry Hybrid LE gives the same exceptional fuel economy despite being a larger sedan and having a bigger more powerful engine.

    Not to mention, the 2021 Corolla hybrid has additional competition this year. If you want either of those two features, then get a 2021. If everyone using the car will be Apple iPhone users for the entire time you own the car and you don’t want blind spot monitoring, then save money and get a left over 2020. That “non-flat” cargo area is a deal breaker because... ..now sliding in bulkier items such as larger boxes; bikes; or just sleeping in it (when economic depression comes) is not possible due to the step. Also; those exposed wires seem dangerous; hope it does link critical systems such as rear brakes... Way more utilitarian to get the corolla hatchback or the Prius!

    A full size spare tire fits. You just won’t have room for a foam spacer pad with cut outs for the tools. Find somewhere else to put the tire change tools or have AAA use their own tools and you are set.

    My 2007 Camry hybrid has 427k miles. I’ve replaced the hybrid batter once ($1100). I’ve replaced the brakes 3 maybe 4 times. I did have that engine oil issue that the 07 is known for but Toyota eventually fixed that and have had no issues since. I’m on my 2nd 12v battery. Both CV axels replaced. But really, these are the only major issues I’ve had. I still get 38-40mpg (according to my ScanGauge). I’ve never changed any of the fluids in the car except for the engine oil. You pay up front for a hybrid but if you run cars into ground like me, I believe that up front cost is justified.

    So , nothing new for 2021..only Android. By the way..in Europe they build the sedans in Turkey. So, quality isn't at its bests.. I prefer made in Japan. More expensive the new model...And still offers stupid cheap feeling hard plastics inside the doors & dash. I went to a dealership & tried it.. the worst ever made plastic..peice of junk. Also, when you try to get inside the car often you hit your knees at the dash..unwise ugly design which takes so much place from interior space. Toyota wake from your deep sleep.
