The second hand market is how I got into sim racing. I got my first g29 for $100 that was new and in the box, the guy said he used it once and didn't like it cause it didn't work on need for speed. I got lucky but I think if you do some smart hunting you can definitely find some good stuff. Good video mate 👌👍

The guide covers it all, excellent video. One thing I'd all from myself is the fact that those cheap 270 degree wheel shaped controllers shouldn't even be a consideration for anyone. They offer basically no precision and immersion or any good feeling at all and it's quite literally a waste of money as you will want an actual wheel anyway. It's better to keep to a normal controller and then jump to a logitech or thrustmaster offering.

I swear I'm the luckiest man alive when it comes to getting into simracing on a budget, I ordered a Driving Force EX from CeX and received a Driving Force GT by accident (£8 spent), then found another DFGT on Gumtree for £10 which ended up going to my brother. I've not tried any other wheels yet out of fear of ruining the cheap-ass experience me and my brother are enjoying right now.

Still miss Will when new Sim hardware appears. A great guy with a big heart.. sigh... I'll see you after Will.. Thanks for the reminder and the great vid. Had a few of the wheels and pedals you mention and the recommendations are spot on dude. Cost is the one thing that puts people off upgrading to a wheel. IMO if you spend enough time in racing games or own more than 3-4 or even if you have a passion for watching racing then, it's easier to justify the cost and it's MORE than worth it. Even an ancient Logitech DFGT with it's laughable pedal set (which CAN be changed with other Logitech pedals), is perfect for beginners, I started on that myself, even making YT vids because I went from "above average" on controller to top 100 in the games I had then. From there I went to the G27, then the T300RS, added T3PA pedals and TH8A shifter, With that last setup I've been able to be in the top 20 in AMS2 regularly.. Recently got a set of Fanatec V3's (the biggest improvement I've had since the G27) and planning for the CSL DD later this year. Now I'm able to challenge the top 5 :)

@@koli0842 hey bro :D the axcsim truebrake mod is a no brainer if ur on a budget, just go for it. If ur worried about the throttle and clutch pots going bad, they sell cheap replacement linear pots now, too. So we should be able to use our g29 pedals for longer with these upgrades. As for the adapter, I tried cheap china ones but they just didnt work well for me, and the leo bodnar adapters are just too expensive for me considering you need two of them (1 for pedals and 1 for shifter). so I ended up making one myself. I still have the code and wiring diagram for a pedal+shifter adapter using just one arduino leonardo board, hit me up if you consider making one in the future

Honestly, I wouldn't buy a wheel without FFB. Better to save your money. I used to have one years and years ago, and it almost made me never to get into sim racing. Because I thought all wheels are f****** useless. Then I learned that some wheels have an actual FFB (lol, I know). FFB is a gamechanger, VR vs. flat screen level of difference. Although, it needs good enough physics for it to shine, in most arcade racers it doesn't matter that much

I would say, if you want to get into sim racing, don’t go with gear based FFB wheel.

It still works as well as the day I bought it, even if it looks a little worse for wear. It's got strong, precise FFB, and modern games even make use to the screen on the wheel, showing speed or what gear I'm in. My buddy has been considering getting into sim racing, so I was trying to find a CSR for him, as they tend to be pretty inexpensive. What sort of reliability issues do they have?

Not the guy who runs this site but a fellow racer. Use the g29 as a starting point as it also works on a pc. Both My brother and I use G920 and he is roughly a half a second from pro level lap times. We use mainly I-racing but we came from Need for Speed and some times Assetto Corsa. He did the Fanatec Load cell Pedal upgrade ( around $400.00 new) I just used a $15.00 Spring from Ebay which helps a lot. I originally used a 3 year old Thrustmaster and dropped about 2 seconds a lap on most of my races. Almost everyone complains its loud and correctly so but mainly on startup and booting into windows. MY advice is get The g29 and go racing. The new spring is an easy upgrade and since its a variable spring pretty much fixes lock ups under braking. My lap times dropped 1 to 2 seconds in I-racing. Finally if your really love racing you can always sell your g29 and upgrade from there. Finally good luck and have fun.

I just bought a thrustmaster t150 for £120. I thought it’s time I get a wheel as I’ve gotten very good on controller. I beat my friend with a controller on f1 2021 and he uses a g29. He suggested I get a g29 but I ended up finding an offer on the t150.

Fanatech has a large ecosystem but a full build with with even the DD will go above $1000. That's why, Fanatech needs to introduce new pedals, wheels and shifters at lower price than they currently offer.

I had G27 as my first more serious steering wheel. Recently I bought G29 and what I can say, it is a downgrade in terms of quality. And that rubber braking brake pedal is the most idiotic "upgrade" I ever seen. I bet Logitech implemented it because it is dirty cheap. That engineer that invented it is brilliant for Logitech but an idiot for the customer.

Thanks for this in-depth buyer’s guide! Why did you said that you do not recommend to convert a wheel stand to a « sim rig »? I’ve a GT OMEGA Classic Wheel Stand v1 so for years and I’m looking for the rear seat frame add-on.
