Only way to tone down that awful thick black plastic cladding, but in a few years that plastic will look like faded crap after being out in the elements. Black paint also doesn't hold up well here in southern Arizona.

For me, the CX-30's biggest negative is the tiny fuel tank. The CX-30 fuel tank holds 12.7 gallons vs. 16.6 gallon capacity for the Subaru Crosstrek.. That translates to approximately 143.4 miles more City range & approximately 170.7 miles more highway range for the Crosstrek. The Crosstrek is supposedly available with a 6-speed manual transmission although you might have a better chance of seeing Big Foot than actually seeing that 6-speed manual in a Crosstrek. The CX-30 is way cooler with the turbo engine. I'd opt for the Mazda CX-5 for more of a backseat & larger fuel tank (15.3 gallons).

The small grab handle on the back is to close the door when it is raining so you don't have to get your hand wet. It takes a little bit more force but I do it on my Mazda 3 all the time.

Liked your review... I could not agree more... bought it February 11, 2021. Love the look, the ride... more than enough power, safety features are excellent but the interior is fantastic!!! I had a Mercedes... I like this interior better!!! Price was great!! Black on black... GS awd with Luxury package... love it!!

@@13love I'm 5'10 (178cm) and I don't feel cramped in the driver seat. The back seats are a bit more cramped, but I can still sit behind myself without my knees touching the driver's seat.

Just a quick correction, emblem has always been where they put sensors not "nowadays"... you can tell the versions that have sensors as the emblem is rounded versus just a plain badge.. I think they started this with the first version of cx5 and 3

Can pinball machines from Stern, Jersey Jack & others fit in the back if you pull the seats down?

I feel like the car needs some simple LED ambient lighting inside, front and back. That would really kick it up a notch for such an already elegant interior. LED's are cheap nowadays.

Also, that lower grill opening (see 1:05) is nakedly open & exposed. Why didn't Mazda use the same upper grill mesh down there also? To save $1 in cost?

I bought a 2020 CX-30 last year and really like it. I would never seriously consider a turbo version since the standard engine has all the performance I could want.

@@keyshawnrussell245 eh not really. In sport mode it’s fine but the engine requires a good push to take off quick.

I just bought one last Saturday, love it so far!! But, I can't figure out how to open the back from the driver seat, I'm at the store picking up my grocery store order and actually had to get out of my car to open the back and then it wouldn't open until I turned the engine off!! It could be a safety feature but regardless a release/button to push to open it from up front would really be helpful, so don't get why they didn't add that feature?? One other thing, I love that I can start it and stop it from indoors using the Mazda app, that will be amazing when it's cold or snowing!!

The button to the left of the automatic seat adjustment buttons opens the trunk. You have to hold it down for a second or so

I tested both and felt no difference. Beware that you sit pretty low in the Mazda 3, if you are older it could be an issue getting in and out.

Looks mean in black. I've decided that this is going to be my next car. Although I will probably get the select trim and in black. Been looking at several other small SUVs and I kept coming back to the CX-30. I'm pretty excited.

I'm getting the preferred mainly because the drivers seat has adjustable lumbar support.

the only comparison are the rear lights

I wished I got this instead of the 3. I like that it’s higher off ground and the look of the back. Might end up giving the 3 to hubby and getting this for me.

I tested both the 3 and CX-30. The Mazda 3 is way more fun to drive, but less practical. I ended up buying the CX-30 because it's indeed higher off the ground, but mostly because it has a bigger trunk. Beware that the CX-30 burns more fuel than the 3.

Crosstrek now offers the 2.5 182 hp engine. I drive a 2016 Mazda Miata Touring but have been looking at this segment. I'd prob get the crosstrek due to how versatile it is.

I put 270K on my 'Manual Transmission' Toyota Corolla S and then replaced it in '16 with 6 speed manual Miata. I wish more than anything crossovers and compact SUV's offered Manual Transmission. Technology is killing my fun!! :)

That thick, cheap-looking black plastic cladding makes it look like a $18K budget vehicle. A few years out in the sun/elements & most of them will have hazy-grayish weathered plastic cladding just like every other vehicle that does it.

Mazda, please get rid of the cheap black plastic all around the suv.

Everyone gripes about this, but seriously- look at the Crosstrek, Kona, and others. It's not that bad, and it is in logical places where it best protects the paint, especially if you get it with the gorgeous Soul Red.

That "cheap black plastic" is what protects my CX 30 from stones that are kicked up from my 1/3 mile long gravel driveway. The body protection was a selling point for me and nicely matches my Machine Grey paint. I like it.

I LOVE the black cladding on my silver AWD CX 30!!! I traded in my soul red ‘18 Mazda 6 GT for this because I moved up to the mountains! I LOVE it and the black cladding!!! ❤️

Your comparing an older Crosstrek 152 hp to a new cx30 the 21 trek now has 182 hp which makes it more comparable as well as very peppy. It’s a tough decision between the two.

I think the Crosstrek brakes better but steers worse than the CX-30. The new extra Crosstrek power should make it take off from a stoplight more like the 186 horsepower Mazda.

What I dont like is the keys :) When I put it in to my pocket and my wallet or phone is in my pocket too it presses the open or the close buttons :)

no it isn't. the 2020 does have touchscreen when parked, but the '21 does not have any touch screen at all.

I like the thick black plastic. I got my CX-30 in white to even accentuate the contrast. My version is the 2.0L Mild hybrid, and yes I was hoping for a better gas mileage (it's not terrible either, I was just a bit disappointed by the "hybrid" part)

Im waiting for them to get rid of the ugly plastic cladding around the body. I would trade my 2018 mazda 3 for this no problem then.

I got my CX-30 in white to accentuate the contrast. I love it! The Mazda 3 is basically the same car without cladding if it really bothers you.

Cladding in the wheels kills it . Dafug is wrong with the designer. Seriuosly a fkind circle? OMG

Styling and quality are first rate. Six speed auto, no turbo version and lackluster mpg aren’t.

This car deserves a manual gearbox. I'm not sure they are selling those in the US, I got mine in the EU and I love it!

The key fob is very ordinary. Nothing good about it. It is fragile, cover falls off easily and you must replace it. I have a 2019 mazda 3 and replaced one in less than 2 months. Looks fake after market-ish.

I also have a 2019 Mazda 3 and mine is in mint condition (minor scratches here and there) have not had to replace anything. Perhaps your just rough with your keys?

That's not a naturally aspirated engine. It's a gdi, which is notorious for carbon bild ups......great car, but bad engine...

I hate the blue on the inside

The plastic cladding looks horrible, the rest is great.

@@richkreyche7064 The location of the screen in this vehicle would make it too far to reach to make it a touch screen tbh, plus touch screens are easier to navigate but are more distracting while you are driving cause you have to looking where you are touching

It is vinyl, Mazda, VW, and Toyota all have plastic seat coverings, (only the premium level Mazda has leather). The vinyl (leatherette) or high-tech plastic seats that they are trying to push on us feel awful, they should stick to quality fabric or real leather. Some of us know better and aren't fooled by fancy names for plastic.

I usually like really your reviews but you got it so wrong on this one. The interior is not leather, it's vinyl, the infotainment system is very hard to use while driving. The front seat bottom gets uncomfortable after about an hour and rear seat is very cramped. The electronic parking brake operation is annoying, the stereo is weak, the A/C is weak, the engine is coarse, and the ride is choppy. The transmission slips between shifts so much that you'd think it was a bad CVT. Also the black plastic around the wheels make the 18 inch wheels look tiny in all colors but black. The Sport mode brings out the worst of the engine's harshness. On the positive side, the steering feel is very good, it has seat memory, and it has rear seat vents. When the car first came out I thought it was so nice and classy looking that I rushed to the Mazda dealer to check it out. They gave me a demo car (premium model) for a day and I able to discover the cars multiple shortcomings. This is one of those things that looks good on paper but lets you down in reality. I wanted so badly to like this car. By the time it was optioned up to a decent level (including AWD) it was approaching $32k. BTW, the 2021 Crosstrek has a new 2.5 liter engine with similar power and much smoother operation. I do agree that people should consider this when shopping this segment but I suggest that they try it for a day like I did. I'm so glad that I waited for the 21 Crosstrek with the bigger engine because the previously weak engine was its major short coming. I'll still catch all your reviews because you are usually so informative.

We found the mid-level Crosstrek has a lot fewer features than the mid-level CX-30. I think the Kia Niro hybrid gives you more for the money, but is not as comfortable and is slower. The Kia Seltos might be good to compare as more similar.

@@swishes41 31,570 with reasonable options according to the Mazda website, similar to the one I test drove. It is still an awful car no matter the price. So, glad I didn't buy one. Other people may like awful cars like this.
