I own this exact same model color and all! And I agree 100% with the critiques on this bike. Shaving another 15-20lbs off this bike and smoothing out the throttle feel could go a long way on this bike. But for the price this bike is one hell of a bargain. Really good linear torque and horsepower. The weight never really felt bad to me and I carries it well, and the suspension was nice and plush in town and holds well in a corner. All and all one my favorite bikes I’ve owned

Hi Scott, I always enjoy your videos immensely and the recent technical comparisons are particularly good. The latest emissions regs are completing ruining all bikes but it's pretty simple to rectify the bike if you intend to use it a lot. Decat and remap a bike and the riding is improved incredibly, particularly the low end torque and rideability. Perhaps you should try it on your BMW and compare the difference. Believe me, it's tremendous.

I currently ride a big 1900cc Yamaha Raider. Absolutely LOVE my big monster. But I have been wanting something sportier to park next to my Raider so I have something more nimble in the mid range naked class to ride on occasion. The Z900 and GSX-s750 have held my attention for performance to price value and them being the heaviest in the mid-range doesn't bother me since my bike is 750lbs wet hahaha. I also like that the power comes on later in the rev range of those two bikes. It would give me a bit of diversity in my rides. Since my Raider has close to 120lbft of torque as soon as I twist the throttle. My biggest concern is how tall the seats are since I only have a 28 inch inseam. Anyway... LOVE your content. Very informative and I look forward to each one. Ride safe. 😊

Very timely review for me. I have been looking at naked sport bikes and have settled on a first or third gen z1000, or possibly a Z900. Bang for the buck the Z900 is the top bike in the middle weight class IMO. I also guarantee you that it has the most solid reliable powerplant given the history of that motor. I'm not shy about a clunky shifting bike around town. The first think I would do is check the chain tension, it could be as simple as that. Most bikes I own are clunky shifters around town :)

I tried both the Z900 and a MT 09 SP last year. Prefered the handling characteristics of the Kawasaki to be honest, so that is what I went with. Not too fused about the lack of a quickshifter or IMU. Clutchless shifts are dead easy on the Z and the TCS does a good job of keeping the front wheel on the ground in Road mode.

Off to ride a Street Triple R now for a comparison and choice. BTW was that a Kawasaki screen or after market. Add anything?

@@NothingToProve Thanks Scott. Yes, nice TTF I test rode a Z900 and a Ninja 650. On both I had a couple of missed gear up-changes. Mostly into third and fourth. I worked out that the position of the gear shifter was different from what I am used to, and the lever has to drop back to the bottom of its range to pick up the next gear. If I accidentally left my foot under it there was some play and it would not upshift. I needed to consciously drop my foot for the next change. I rode a GSX S750 and Street Triple shortly after and both had crisper gear boxes with less movement in the lever and I could not really miss a gear. The triumph had an outstanding box. Both second hand (12,000 km) vs brand new Z. Similar for my Honda. Any comment from you or followers? Is this a Kawi gear box thing? New bike? Bad adjustment?

  • @NothingToProve

    @NothingToProve

    2 жыл бұрын

Oh, sorry, yea the (wind) screen was stock from Kawasaki. Now on to the subject of gear shifts...this is a rabbit hole we are going down...😒🤔 In my limited experience (sarcasm there) Triumph makes the best precision gear boxes bar none...well Aprilia is right there too but they are so small I usually don't mention them. So if you are comparing anything to Triumph or Aprilia, it won't stand up. Now that's my humble opinion. But still today I do not own nor ever have owned a Triumph/Aprilia 😁 So having a good tranny is just part of the equation. Now to the Japanese OEM trannies: they are good, Yamaha/Honda making some of the best of the 4. Usually Suzuki and Kawa are fighting for 3rd place, bike dependent for example: Hayabusa is great and ZH2 are very good trannies but those are also the top of the line and you'll pay top $$$ for them. With that said, the Z900 is very good for it's price, "there in lies the rub" & that's the difference between Kawa and Triumph with these two bikes. If you got the money & dealer support I'd take the Triumph but usually one or the other is in short supply for Triumph so guys will choose the Z900 over the STR. take care, Scott

@@NothingToProve Scott, I value your considerable experience, so thanks for the full response. Funny thing is every time I get on the little GSX S750 it makes me smile. Very tight, smooth, easy to ride around town despite the weight. The clutch friction point and fuelling seem to work perfectly for smooth changes up and blips down. That is until the clock hits 100km on the open road. The air flow is appalling. Maybe a small screen. And it is real cheap new where I live. I rode an MT09SP in 2019 but waited for the new model which took two years to arrive down under. The tranny was click click. Very precise. Rode the standard one this year and did not notice the tranny which is probably a compliment(?) But yeh two thumbs up Triumph. Mind you the STR looks are an acquired taste....

I like your style and presentation. I’m slightly confused on your overall happiness with the bike compared to other contenders. Most of the review you’re super positive with the machine but towards the duration you start mentioning the clutch, throttle and this shouldn’t be happening at this price point. I was sold on this bike during the 3/4s of your spill but that last part worries me. It doesn’t come to a stop smoothly and taking off when engaging clutch doesn’t operate like most bikes in that range? Please explain further, if you have time. I’m looking to purchase soon and whatever I choose I may be living with for a very long time. FYI, I like the cutaway shots from multiple angles and the ride-a-long cam off to the right of the bike. I really liked you walking through the suspension and braking components as well. Would love to see you put together short reviews with a focus on mechanics. You seem pretty knowledgeable and that expertise is well needed.

Hi and thank you, It's Euro 5 that ruined the on-off throttle for me and set the mood for a not so smooth ride. So if you get a 2021 model you'll have to get it re-mapped but if you are in Europe you will have to pass emissions every year once it turns 2 years old, so re-mapping the motor is really a pain (setting it back to factory spec for inspection then setting it back once done with inspection). So just get a 2020 model year and you'll love it! If you are in the U.S. then just do a power commander re-map and be done with it and you'll love it. 😁👍 ride safe, Scott

Hey Scott, its me again, in my never-ending research for my 1st bike :D I`m 32, 110 kg whats your opinion in getting this as my 1st bike and running it in rain mode (55% of the power, around 70 HP) untill I get confident enough to use it at its normal capacity (1-2 years in probably) ? I`ve owned a fast car in the past, I know how to respect the power, and I`m not into that "get a small bike and work yourself up" thing, as I think it can get expensive and I don`t have any problems with spending more time with a z900 for example and learning everything there is to learn in rain mode and than open it up. The proccess of getting better at riding might be slower this way, but I`m not in a hurry, as I see riding as a lifelong thing once I`ll get my 1st bike in 2022. @@Rolilasx I think you'll be fine. The Z900 might look like an absolute beast, but it's actually a very easy bike to ride. Personally I find it easier to ride than the various 650 twins due to the smooth and linear engine. Rain mode does reduce the power and dull the throttle response quite a bit, but TBH I don't think that you'll ride around like that for 1-2 years 😉 Not an issue because the power comes on in a very linear fashion, so it won't give you any nasty surprises. BTW. I started out at age 30 in 2020 on a Honda CB600F Hornet with 94 hp. I felt much confident and in control as newbie on a motorcycle at 30 than I did as an 18 year old in car. Thing is that someone who's been driving a car for more than a decade just isn't a beginner on a motorcycle in the same way as an 18 year old, who's got zero experience in how to deal with what you may encounter on a public road. I bought a new Z900 in May last year and it's easier to ride than the Honda despite being heavier and more powerful.

The Himalayan needs a bit more power and a decent touring speed. Other than that, I love its looks. For the price, what’s there to argue against?

@@chrishart8548 my speed is really all that ever concerns me personally. Keeping the legal limits when those exist, or simply sticking to my preferred range of speed. I’m not cool by any stretch of the imagination but, I can describe in full colour the splendor of the views I witness during trips. I also enjoy the silent mode option most phones come with!

  • @NothingToProve

Euro 5 made the Engine mapping worse. Trying to make the motors burn lean, less gas more air, they get hot and the engine mapping suffers. Meaning that the on/off position of the throttle is not smooth any more. A lot of guys either live with it or buy an after market ICU and that fixes it.

Well that is a though question. Performance wise they are about the same, one is a little better here the other a little better there so it's a wash. But when you ride in traffic or are riding within the speed limit the Z900 is a little boring but the MT09 is still fun and around 90% of the time we ride like normal people, so I'd take the 09. ride safe, Scott

Well, Turkey is in the EU but only joined in the last 2 decades BUT most of Turkey is on the Asian content 🙄 So technically only partially physically in Europe but technically still in the EU. 😁 But the bottom line is if you sit on it and it's too high, then it's too high, period. But there are after market lowering kits that you can get for it. Just google it and you'll find some but probably not many will ship to Turkey 😒 It's just a kit for the rear link on the rear spring and the front you just loosen the clamps on the forks and lower it then tighten them back up to match the amount lowered on the rear link. Sounds simple, if you are mechanically inclined but if not then you might want to get a mechanic to do if for you. take care, Scott

This is euro 5 for you. Earlier Z900's have a much smoother throttle, in fact they are smoother than the MT09. It is heavier than the MT09 but once rolling it is no problem and actually has a better suspension and chassis set up than the old model MT09. Instability at higher speeds was a common issue with the old model Yam. The new one is much better.

If you get an aftermarket exhaust and pipe, you will save about 10kg. When you ride hard at the highway, a little weight is neccesary. I test ride a ktm 890 duke once and it was wobbling all over the place on the highway with some wind. Kawasaki is a no nonsense manufacturer..
