Major John Lee of the 4th Battalion, of his own accord attacked a wagon train in 1877 murdering everyone except the children. John Lee and his cohorts were excommunicated and John was executed for his crimes.

@@ningenJMK Yes Lee's colleagues wanted directions from Salt Lake on how to deal with the wagon train. A messenger was sent but before they returned Lee ambushed the wagon train. What was the response from Salt Lake when it finally arrived? Leave the wagon train alone.

Translation: libertarianism is the solution. I don't tell you what to do and you don't tell me what to do and we respect our differences. Sadly I think the Federalists have grown so big that libertarianism isn't much of an option. There is too much power at stake at the Federal level which turns it into an ugly battle as each side fights over control. Sadly the Federal courts have contributed heavily to the problem by allowing extra-constitutional power grabs by politicians. In fact politicians have learned it is far easier to get a Federal court to allow unconstitutional powers than to pass constitutional amendments, and why we rarely see efforts anymore by politicians to propose amendments. The solution is a drastic return to a minimalist Federal government as intended. James Madison said the powers of the Federal government are "few and defined." Would you agree with this statement today?

But wouldn't it be better if we believed in the bible as the word of God, being Mormons and all. Why not be a man like Paul, who could write the words of Romans 1 to people who lived among the Romans? Why not be a man like Moses who could reveal the words of Leviticus 18 to people who had grown up controlled by the Egyptians? At the very least, why not preach their words? When such characters have roamed the earth, should we be among those who hold up their sacrifice and reveal their words anew with bold testimony of their truthfulness instead of burying their words and excusing the people from doing the same?

Hateful comments for a speech trying to accommodate our differences. Can't we come together and listen to each other? Nothing is absolute in our pleuritistic society and some accommodation on both sides is needed. Let them

People just hate being con'ed.

Some people have lovable personalities no matter what. I think it's up to us to find lovableness to respond to positively So that we can encourage good will But also balance ourselves to 💂‍♂️ 💂‍♀️ Our virtue as our life.

I think most people are perfectly fine with tolerance; as soon as all opposition to their viewpoint is stamped out, and there is no need for tolerance anymore.

I guess they should change their name from Mormon studies now to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints studies.

He’s pretty spry for a man his age. An eloquent speaker with excellent points, it’s unfortunate: the “kids of SSM” policy will haunt his organization for decades to come. None of the upper management has copped to the fact that the policy was not divinely inspired.

Perhaps a rather long winded version of" Live and let live " However for a man of 89 he has an elegant and profound understanding of law and constitution. Perhaps he has been misuderstood at times and the non discriminators have mis judged him. Or he has changed his attitude to some minorities because he wants a mutual respectful and practical outcome for all concerned without supreme law intervention. He does not tell the full truth all the time he has a convenient memory I suspect, well he trained and is a lawyer. Even Jesus did not trust them!

He doesn’t “sit on the fence” between “Church doctrine,” and matters pertaining to “Secular law.” What he’s trying to do is “build bridges of understanding” between the expectations of both camps, as you stated “Live and Let Live.” Your implication that he can’t be trusted to tell the “full truth” isn’t fair. God would certainly let him know if he wasn’t candid enough in his talks. Like all of the apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ, he gets God’s “approval” on his speeches “before” he delivers them.

Forbidding voters on long lines from being given transportation to the polls or water on line and gerrymandering minorities out of a chance to elect their peers must result in challenge more than simple agreeable passive manners and reconciliation. At some point, you must say yes to no. Accommodation of white religionists historically has meant injury to black religionists.

Tax one non profit, then you must tax them all. Every PTA, every community organization, every hospital or medical faculty like MidTown clinic that offers no cost to low cost care for all. The tax argument is a red herring and should be recognized as a way to destroy every non profit.

It really makes me mad when people call Joseph Smith a charlatan! So what if he made those gold plates in his garage. Also, so what if he made up a religion and was a lifetime grifter and liar. Also, so what if he made up the angel being named Moroni. It’s like, halfway between moron and macaroni. People should be able to make up whatever religions they want, it’s a free country.

I am pretty confident Joseph Smith had more integrity in a small percentage of his persona than you do in your whole body. It’s easy as an antagonist to criticize someone for their weaknesses but what about their strengths. You accept a lot of the criticisms of Joseph but ignore all the amazing things he did and the legacy of the people that came after him. The things he taught are evidence to me that he was inspired in spite of the presentism that you use to judge the past. I hope your posterity is less harsh on your idiosyncrasies than you are on people that lived over 150 years ago. That being said, the history of Joseph is not clear cut, is highly disputed both good and bad but you still stand here criticizing someone in a different time with different standards. Even ten years from now societal standards will be different and your current behavior will be scrutinized 10 years from now.
