Inside Church Headquarters | The Power of Councils

The Savior governs His Church through councils. This divine pattern is critical to the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at every level.
This Church News documentary, titled “Inside Church Headquarters,” examines the essential role of councils in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, beginning with the Council of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and extending to stake, ward and family councils. It highlights the need for women’s voices in councils. Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and general women leaders also speak about the purpose and functions of three of the Church’s executive councils: the Missionary Executive Council, the Temple and Family History Executive Council, and the Priesthood and Family Executive Council.
“In the abundance of counsel, there is wisdom,” said Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency. “When the Prophet Joseph Smith was called, he taught the world, and he taught all of us for the first time, the first principle about the plan of salvation is that our Heavenly Father introduced it in a great council in heaven. So, as Latter-day Saints, we begin with councils.”
The council system, said President M. Russell Ballard, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “is the way you move things safely and solidly from where it is to where it needs to be.”

We all make mistakes, no one is perfect. If our sins could stink, would we be able to stand the smell in our chapels? As mortal men and women we are all fallible. We are sent here to learn. I'm still learning, and I'm grateful for the gift of the Holy Ghost. A perspective that I heard recently is as follows, "I believe that we are in the Latter-day apostasy at the moment, where God is separating the wheat and the tares. He is seeing who are "His" and who worship His Church and lean too heavily upon the arm of the flesh. I feel empathy for all those who are struggling to differentiate between "The Church" and "The Gospel", but everyone will be tested to see where their allegiance is during such a divergence between the two. We will be accountable to God for choosing good and rejecting evil personally. We will not be saved as a group." I'm grateful for the wisdom of counselling together.

Good points, William, however, the apostasy has been going on since the original council in heaven where 1/3 of Heavenly Father's children refused to follow him and went away, and Cain fell away, along with many thousands throughout the centuries and in John 6:66, John describes how many who had followed Jesus left and went their own way and stopped following him. And during the Kirtland and Nauvoo periods of the church, ~1/4 of the membership left the church, respectively, went their own way and today, same thing is happening, many leave and go their own way so the apostasy of followers has existed since the first council and will continue to the end. One of our challenges is to love those who decide to stop following the same as everyone else and learn to not judge them and understand that we all make our own choices of how we live our lives and where we want to spend eternity as there will be no deception or surprise of what kingdom of glory we inherit. Your words are well written and so true.

For one ,in your statement you bring up, being saved as a group of people. I don't believe I know any of the church members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe they will be saved as a group. This is false Doctrine. We are all responsible for ourselves. As long as I have been in the church I have never heard of anyone speaking about being saved as a group of people. Not only that the church has never taught that type of Doctrine. Each of us is saved of the mercy after baptism of Jesus Christ. This is in the Bible and the Book of Mormon also the Doctrine and Covenants. I know of few that has had a falling-out with the bishop and his Council. Anyone can disagree if they would like. If you're going to follow the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the prophet with the 12 apostles then you are blessed more than others that do not follow the prophet and their counsel because they are led by the counsel of Jesus Christ self. Like the scriptures read you will know them by their words and actions. Every single Apostle and prophet have devoted their life without wages to serve Jesus Christ. All the people that work in the vineyard of the Lord is blessed more then those who set under the shade tree and eat the oranges. If you really want to change your life you will read the scriptures pray with faith and humble yourself and to understand his will and repent constantly. The great and spacious building is full of people mocking and criticizing and trying to start rumor with false Doctrine about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I don't understand people that want to destroy the faith and determination of people that want to serve the Lord. Also destroyed their testimony . Are they demons in the flesh? Every one of us has a choice to serve the Lord or not. We all will reap the rewards of our choice good for bad!

Les, your absolutely right, we will not be saved as a group, nowhere in the Gospel does it say that. It definitely doesn’t agree with the principles found in the temple or what Paul wrote about women “usurping authority over the man”. The woman is deceived, she’s the last one we need in any position of leadership. It’s also strange how they’re towing their wives around to all the speaking engagements now. They’re really trying to create the image of husband/wife teams instead of priesthood authority. @@yeboscrebo4451 I agree. I am not sure if the new move to "empower" women roles in the church is just lip service or if they are being genuine. Either way, you are correct that women presiding in leadership roles in the church (mainly priesthood roles) is not biblical. Personally, it looks like a company pandering to "wokeism" in hopes of keeping the younger generation from leaving as fast as they are. But the unintended consequences of that is the slightly older generation (like me, in my 40's) is starting to realize that what the church taught about prophets being directly led by God, is not true and never was. So, many of us true believers are slowly starting to realize that the church is going through a rebranding phase and it has nothing to do with God, it is a simple cost/benefit analysis to change their doctrines in order to appeal to the most people possible for maximum profits. Like. Any. Corporation. Would. Do....... That is what helped me realize I was in a company, not a religion.

There is no difference between men and women when it comes to value, but there sure is when it comes to ability. The scriptures are clear that women are created to a lesser degree of glory. They are also clear that man is to “rule” or “preside” (insert whichever word triggers you the least) because the man “was not deceived but the woman, being deceived, was in the transgression”. The woman is supposed to follow the man, give her will over to him or take his name upon her, just like the bride of Christ (us) is supposed to give up her will and take on his name and follow him. This is the quintessential theme of the gospel.

In the Doctrine and Covenants, this is how the first presidency his to conduct these meetings of the church. The POWER of a council is that it simply protects an individual from receiving blame for all of the evil that it is doing. It was given to men in weakness for weakness because the members couldn't figure out how to receive revelation properly. This is all so sad.

I personally have seen the church work because I did some contract work in the translation department doing some computer programming for this department. I love the structure of the church and can see the Lord's hand in it. Unfortunately there are fallible people, sometimes extremely fallible, people working at the church. Like the ancient church, mistakes were and are made. things won't likely be perfect until the Lord is physically running things. It is comforting to know that is his church and authority restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith, and that the keys of authority are held by President Russel M. Nelson today.

Just like the Lord taught when he was alive with his 12 disciples period and duplicate the same things Our Savior did with his apostles. I would think there would be other churches that would do the same thing in their meetings, so they could be led by the spirit of the Lord. I'm so grateful for president Nelson and all of the Apostles starving everyday for the Lord. They are great examples to us all, even the nonbelievers and investigators. It's simple, Jesus Christ leads his people. Are you the only one that don't know, why don't you ask God. Will you walk blindly all your life? Instead of asking me, ask God your father in Heaven. If you never ask God for anything, you will not receive. While you're at it, ask if the Church of Jesus Christ is the truth Gospel of Jesus Christ. I did. I received an answer. I am only a servant of God, so why do you ask me? If I tell you , you will not believe me. But if you ask God , and you received an answer , you will know for yourself and never be able to deny it!

@@123mneil I really not sure what you're even trying to say with all those words. You did mention something about following somebody else. That's a bad idea. This is your study and no one else should even care. If you do not have the gift of discernment you will be misled and if you don't have gift of the Holy Ghost you will be misled. That's all I got to say. You do not ever take somebody else's word because it flatters the ears or it sounds good. You are looking for truth and nothing but the truth if not you will be misled by the concept of men and their philosophies. Why is it so hard for people to ask God for understanding. If you're not going to follow the words of Jesus Christ you might as well hang it up. And not take somebody else's word for it. Not even my word . I believe I give you the tools, go use them now, if you don't already have them in your toolbox. You know the only way I can explain it to you. Everyone pretty much has a house with electricity and lights. Electricity runs most of the world, right. Okay let's say you live in the house for 30 years with electricity and water. Every evening or night it becomes a problem. Only because you did not read the instructions how to turn the electricity on in your house at the breaker box. So for 30 years you've been living without electricity. You have a dishwasher stove and other items like washer and dryer but you could never use them without electricity 30 years go by and your neighbor comes over ask how you're doing and checking on you maybe bringing some cookies. And she asked why is it so dark in here why don't you turn the lights on. And you tell her we don't have lights but we have electricity but we don't know how to turn it on. She tells you, well go back there open the door and push up on the switch and that will turn on your electrical box. Wouldn't you feel stupid living 30 years with electricity and never use your lights. This is how I see many people with the Holy Ghost even prayer. I just shake my head. I thought maybe they don't know how to do that. The Holy Ghost is free use it ,ask and you will receive because it's free also. Ask for the gift of discernment so you're not living in a home for 30 years without lights. Come Judgment Day you better have all your ducks in a row. Are you going to flunk the test of mortality in seeking Jesus Christ and his true teachings. Is your name going to be in the books of remembrance and received the Tree of Life eternal.

They (and the 70) were strictly traveling counselors, never to govern the stakes of zion. This is why under joseph smith, the Twelve were 6th in authority, and under the stake presidents and stake high councils. - “President Smith proposed the following question: What importance is there attached to the calling of the Twelve Apostles, different from the other callings or officers of the Church? After the question was discussed by Councilors Patten, Young, Smith, and M’Lellin, President Joseph Smith, Jun., gave the following decision: ‘They are the Twelve Apostles, who are called to the office of the Traveling High Council, who are to preside over the churches of the Saints, among the Gentiles, where there is no presidency established; and they are to travel and preach among the Gentiles, until the Lord shall command them to go to the Jews. They are to hold the keys of this ministry, to unlock the door of the Kingdom of heaven unto all nations, and to preach the Gospel to every creature. This is the power, authority, and virtue of their apostleship.’” (Oliver Cowdery, Clerk. Feb. 27, 1835. The Seventy are to act in the name of the Lord, under the direction of the Twelve or the traveling high council, in building up the church and regulating all the affairs of the same in all nations, first unto the Gentiles and then to the Jews- The Twelve being sent out, holding the keys, to open the door by the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and first unto the Gentiles and then unto the Jews.” (D&C 107:33-35) - “The standing high councils, at the stakes of Zion, form a quorum equal in authority in the affairs of the church, in all their decisions, to the quorum of the presidency, or to the traveling high council. The high council in Zion form a quorum equal in authority in the affairs of the church, in all their decisions, to the councils of the Twelve at the stakes of Zion. I hope you learn to practice self love and find the glorious worth of your spirit. This will give you strength. To see yourself as the Lord sees you is difficult. When we think of unconditional love for our children that seems like an easy concept, it we are commanded to seek the same unconditional love for our own life and spirit since that is our worth and how we are seen through HIS eyes. Just know the LOVE is what connects us and is the universal language of our Lord and Savior and what will keep you connected to the Holy Ghost not matter you paper status in the church. You are loved, and you have immense worth!

@@Darronsanderson so so true. I had a Bishop pound his fist on the table when I didn’t agree with the 29 year old boy that spoke with a knee jerk reaction and told my son that it wasn’t his fault he didn’t desire to serve a mission it was indeed the example of his parents. Well this is where his lack of experience fell short. My 21 year old of course defended his parents and then became angry and repeated his conversation with me. I had to explain that his experience was the man, not the mantle of Bishop. As I sat in his office he said you are probably upset with me for what I said and I said not upset but felt your judgment was misplaced. That’s when the fist pounded the table and with a angry voice told me HE WAS a JUDGE in Israel. I just sat there and thought what a naive dumb dumb. Life will teach him. I am not one to argue but I did not share anything with him again. You can’t give people life experience or wisdom. You have to forgive people in advance for the dumb and insensitive comments they say. If my testimony hung on what people said I would never have gone to church ever again. Currently I have a huge problem with the comment of this vax “is safe and effective” It all boils down to is this the restored gospel or not and for me it is so I keep pressing on

Don’t ever, for any reason, do anything to anyone, for any reason, ever, no matter what. No matter where, or who, or who you are with, or where you are going, or where you’ve been.. Ever.. @@Candymantempting41 Jesus said that very few would get into heaven and very few would be saved. Luke 13:23 Those who read their Bibles know that the prophets and apostles of the LDS church are false. Eternal life is a free gift. That is how much God loves you! Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the FREE GIFT of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 3:24 Being justified FREELY by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Eph. 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the GIFT of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. Joseph Smith and every LDS prophet since him have preached a gospel of “do,” negating the gospel of “done” that Jesus preached and was. The LDS church is all about what it and its members must still do and be if they want to live with God (and be a god) one day. The true church is all about proclaiming what Christ has DONE to make us right with God now for all eternity. It’s a certainty. Jesus Christ canceled the record of debt that was held against us. All you need to do is accept Christ by faith. It isn't because of who you are and what you have done for God. It is because of who God is and what He did for you in sending Jesus to be the sacrificial offering for your sins. To be your substitute on the cross and to satisfy the demands of God's law that stands against you. Christ has done the one work that was necessary to reconcile you to God. Christ has done the one act of righteousness that could bring justification and life to all men. All Christ is asking with open arms is for you to lay down your religiosity and works at the foot of the cross and allow Christ to take it. Salvation is quite simple. Luke 18 And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

I've learned looking back isn't fair to any current administration. That's proven outside the church itself in our American government where by the grace of god we are able to change every 4 years. Looking at the current administration and the work the leaders today represent is what all should base their judgements on. In my lifetime never have i been so blessed to be grace then when was most in need and had the service of members of this church. Let each make their own judgment but...asking about the past isn't anything anyone can change today. The Jewish religion started out with polygamy. Today if meet a member first ask their perspective. Just saints every last one of them. They do the work that answers others prayers. They do gods work and shoulder their burden and then some. my humble opinion. Invite you to make your own.

That's 12-13. And yes having many wives was the teaching's. Today try that and I'll bet my entire existence the current prophet will help the DA with federal prosecution. I know this much in the 1830s there wasn't monogamy. US law created it. Israel even was only formed in 1948. Before that Muslims ruled everywhere and they still, to this day, right now in Afghanistan since we pulled out the wrong way, as young as 8-9 years old allow men to "marry". I'm sharpening my sword at the very thought... I'll stand for the right. Ill stand for those afflicted down trodden and will provide support and aid to those doing the real heavy lifting. Speak of the work they are doing today. If you want me to highlight what Moses at 83 came down mountains to find the original Judeans' doing, I'm sure you would not find anything better. Lucky for us there is progression. Only where there are those willing to stand up for what is right. The argument that since other religions used to practice polygamy or still do is sickening and does not excuse anyone using a position of authority to prey on children. Whether it was done in 1830 or 2021 it is still wrong. Current and past church leaders fail to address the concerns it’s members have and refuse to take any responsibility. For a group of men claiming to speak on behalf of god I would imagine they could address these concerns many have and do more for the world.
