I have been researching the Santa Fe Calligraphy recently as a possible replacment (and upgrade) for my Kona. Your video has been the most comprehensive I've seen so far and I apprecaite that! You were the only one who actually went over all the functions of the cruise control and I've come away from your review knowing answers to questions that I couldn't even find on Hyundai's own site. Well done!

Just came across this review of the Santa Fe on this KZread site today (8-31-21) . Most of this year I've watched a lot of on this make and model car. All have helped me. I know literally all the facts on it but, to get someone who rates in "tach numbers" is nice. I've yet to try this car out. Sat in the SEL version Santa Fe '21 back in May. (The dealership I stopped into did not have any Limit or calligraphy models in stock) A very impressive car with loads of "bells & whistles". Look forward to test out the car before long. Hope my wife of 45 years enjoys it too.

I know you mentioned (but didn't show) but one feature I REALLY love is the cargo compartments UNDER the regular cargo floor - allows me to keep all my work stuff (tools/parts) organized, not moving around, and out of the way! Really good review Lauren. I was looking for a 2-row SUV in this price range. Drove this and others and went with a Toyota Venza Limited. It came down to these 2 vehicles so I went with incredible mpg (40+) and Toyota quality versus Hyundai. The front seats in the Venza though not leather, are a little more comfortable as well but after owning the Venza for a couple of months, I do see the direct positives of this Santa Fe. In everyday use, The Venza fails. The controls are not intuitive, aren’t immediate and not as complete versus the Santa Fe. The seats seem comfortable at first but aren’t on longer trips. There are little things that the Santa Fe does that the Venza tries but fails. Bottom line, if I had to do it over again, I’d go with the Santa Fe Calligraphy, especially when the 2 are equally priced and the better deals are always at Hyundai. It’s a good thing I leased the Venza!

I have been pouring over videos of Venza’s and Santa Fe’s trying to decide between the two.. I would have never given a Hyundai a second look before.. I am shocked at how much technology and safety features Hyundai has.. with the best warranty on the market. It’s good to find someone else who was choosing between the two. The Limited Hybrids interior rivals that of a top tier Lexus and even a few Porsche’s I’ve been in. I can’t believe Hyundai can put out such a refined interior..

i bought a Callig yesterday!! 2022 FWD. I owned 2 Lexus models before this. I'll admit, I was one of those snobs. When it was time to buy a new car (my SC430 was totalled on I-85 a few months ago), i started the search with BMW and Lexus. Then I tried the QV70 based on stellar youtube reviews. Loved it and loved the quilted leather seats. BUT, they only offered the quilted leather in the 3.5L turbo (way too much for me). Then i found the SF Calligraphy via the Genesis. Then i decided to test drive. Game changer. I had waited 3 months for the NX 350 to come out from Lexus. Test drove it yesterday at 1:00 pm and then headed directly to Hyundai to buy the Sante Fe Calligraphy. If you would have told me 3 months ago i was going to buy a Hyundai i would have laughed in your face. It is VERY difficult to find the Calligraphy in AWD right now so I opted to take the FWD instead. I'm sure it will be fine. I live in a hot climate. I just wanted it mainly for rain. The NX 350s come standard with AWD but that wasn't -- obviously -- a deal breaker.

@@lgfrie Well, in week 3 here of ownership. I think i have 125 miles on it. haha Still loving it. Only thing i haven't liked thus far is my "around town" gas mileage. My errands are in the city and i rarely go more than 1.5 to 2 miles for any of my errands. Many times less than that. And maybe as a result of that I'm getting very low mileage. I'm averaging about 10.8 mpg on the first tank thus far. Hoping that will go up as the car gets more broken in but I'm not willing to bet on it. Everything else is terrific. When people see the interior they're blown away by the quality and tech. So that is my only "issue" thus far.

@@kevinbeatty7553 Yep. I know exactly what you're talking about, Kevin. Mileage is really, really bad on local runs to the store. To give you some perspective (and hope!), I get 9-12 mpg going to pick up groceries, but 28 mpg on pure highway 65+mpg driving. On a mixed drive - some highway, some stop and go - it's usually around 21-22. Interestingly, all those #'s were exactly the same on the X3 that this SF Calligraphy replaced. Was hoping for better but ... c'est la vie.

I have done a ridiculous amount of research on cars these last few months. Even though we went with the Tesla Model Y, this car (2022 Santa Fe Calligraphy) is easily the best 2 row Gas powered SUV on the market. It has everything you could possibly want and more. For those interested on why we picked the Model Y I’ll explain. It had nothing to do with environmental factors or games or Netflix compatibility… it was strictly on the merits of the car and its price. I love that the car evolves through software updates and unlocks new features that are actually pretty impressive (like heated rear seats or heated steering wheel). I liked the fact that the infotainment is responsive as hell and is a fantastic size. The seats are the most comfortable I’ve ever been in. It’s the safest car that’s ever been tested. Electric cars are ridiculously cheap to maintain. You charge at home 99% of the time which is ridiculously cheap and then you have teslas wonderful cheap supercharger network for road-trips. The handling is phenomenal and there is no lag when driving. If you’re into “cruise control” you’ll love autopilot. Full self driving is a waste of money right now so no reason to buy that, same with the performance model. Of course Tesla’s build quality isn’t as refined as legacy automakers but it’s actually very good contrary to what you may think and if you spot anything during delivery they fix it right up at no cost. With Tesla about to open their Texas factory, the quality will improve dramatically. So given that you get the safest vehicle, the highest tech vehicle that unlocks new features for free over time, a car that has the best “cruise control” system, a car that has many fun factors including everything from apps to insane handling and acceleration, and given that it’s build quality is nearing legacy automakers, what’s the downside? There is always the subjective design which you may love or hate…. But for most it’s the MSRP. We ordered ours before $5,000 in price hikes and we live in a state with no sales tax on EVs. We got the premium white interior and the 20in wheels so in total the car was $58,500. This Santa Fe is $43k plus tax so somewhere around $45k. You’d therefore think that the Santa Fe is a cheaper car. You’d be wrong. We financed the car with 25k down. After all is said and done, the Tesla over 72 months is around $498 a month. The Santa Fe came out to $398 a month. So you’d expect it to be cheaper…. It isn’t. What do cars need to drive? Fuel. We would spend $200 a month on gas given the MPG of the Santa Fe, a $3.29 gas price and a monthly total of 1500 miles driven. Tesla is far cheaper to fuel, let’s call it $50-75 a month. After all is said and done, the Tesla costs less by 25-50 a month and that’s being conservative. After 72 months when the cars would be paid, the Tesla then becomes $125-$150 a month cheaper because now they’re only competing on fuel costs. You also are missing maintenance (oil changes etc) that you don’t need in a Tesla. You’re also not taking into account how teslas barely depreciate when compared to legacy gas powered vehicles. You’re also not taking into account the longevity of a Tesla, which will easily outlast any gas car by a factor of years, therefore extending the savings. So you get a better car for less…. that’s a no brainer. All of this is without factoring in a possible $10,000 in federal tax credits if bidens new bill or a different version of it passes in the senate. Rear sunshades and a HUD are cool, but the Tesla is a more comfortable, safer car. It’s cheaper, it’s more prestigious, it’s American, and it’s extremely fun. Easily the most compelling vehicle out right now, but like I said before. The Santa Fe calligraphy is the best value car you can buy if you only want a gas suv. Same can be said about the Genesis GV70 in the luxury segment.

I owned a 2017 Lexus RX350 for three years. It was a brand new design at the time. While it was a fine car, I was utterly disappointed by the infotainment, the fact that the gauge cluster had parts right out of the Corolla parts bin (inexcusable at that price point). The fact that the Lexus would sometimes have as many as SEVEN green lights on the dash at night telling me everything was working (can't you just warn me when things are not working?!). Bottom line, I traded for a Telluride (I'm sure you know Kia and Hyundai are the same company), and despite saving $10K on the price, it was a huge upgrade over the Lexus. In fact we liked the Telluride so much we traded for another one after just 2 years, because it had APPRECIATED in value such that we profited from switching to a 2022! Never seen anything like it. Our second car, a BMW, caught fire last week, and I immediately tested the newer Hyundai Santa Fe (2022) and it again wowed me. And they didn't even have a Calligraphy model in stock. I was wowed by a low to mid level model! In any case, I pulled the trigger today and put a deposit on a 2022 Calligraphy. Although I don't hate Lexus, they just didn't come close to what it should have. There were so many areas where I felt they cut corners, or made inexcusable tech or ergonomic blunders. For example, to adjust the heated/cooled seats you had to kind of twist your hand 90 degrees around the shifter. It was like the guy who designed the heated seats buttons had not been told where in the car they would be placed! Bottom line, my three years with a Lexus made me say never again. In fact, in general, I feel like the Japanese manufacturers no longer have the drive and thirst for the market that they once did. They seem happy to play it safe and just churn out ordinary cars. Conversely, the South Korean manufacturers are deadly serious and are relentlessly improving and bringing their A game. I just ordered my third one, and I have no doubt that was right. If someone gave me the $10K difference in price, sure, I'd test drive a Lexus again, just to see what they have done in the past few years. But after my last experience, I wouldn't even consider dropping an extra $10K of my own money for a car like that.

I wish they would put them up with the main lights, but mostly because I don't think they look that good on the bumper. In terms of safety, they should be ple ty visible. They are about 28 inches off the ground, which is similar to a sedan or other cars and quite a bit higher and more visible than those on most trailers, which also have the brake lights at a lower height. Anyone behind should be able to see them from any normal distance that you would need to see them from.

Very nice review! Can't believe my wife ends up with no lumbar! She doesn't drive so gets stuck with it. Not sure I want a crabby wife so could be a deal buster. One other thing: why doesn't anybody do a night driving test? Somewhere I heard that the speedometer and tach do not dim at night, making it annoyingly hard on your eyes. Maybe it wasn't the Santa Fe. It might have been the Genesis GV70. I will find out eventually. Wish I wrote down the source for that info.

Very good car with the very bad service. My Santa Fe 2021 Calligraphy with 20 wheels is already 21 days in service with steering wheel issue in the Round Rock Hyundai. Mechanics can't even understand how to fix this car. Hyundai will send their inspector to come to the Round Rock next week. By the way, Wireless Android and Car Play is available on the low trims only. And with 20 inches wheels trim you will not have spare wheel. I love my Santa Fe Calligraphy. By the way, in the Limited trim seats are more firmer. And forward brakes are not so comfortable. Also Calligraphy trim has head up display, which is great and informative and synchronized with the navigation. The only drawback here is that 20 inch wheels are too heavy and firm. 19 ones are better. But 20 wheels design are better. Also as far as I know - it's better to use just a little firm seats for the back issues. I agree that to have just 2-ways lumbar support for passenger would be great!

Does anybody have a comment on the regular engine for the Santa Fe and how it drives? I'm torn between the Urban and Preferred Trend, since I find the black leather with no moonroof a little dark inside... do I sacrifice the engine for moonroof and beige interior, or is it worth it to just get the Urban with the turbo engine? I looked at the GV70, the Santa Fe Calligraphy, and Lexus NX. I really wanted the quilted Napa leather seats if i got the Hyundai or Genesis. But it's only available on the 3.5L Turbo in the QV70 (boo!!). And i didn't wanna pay $57K for a car. I loved the styling in it (especially the center console...felt like a Bentley). But the styling in the Santa Fe Calligraphy was just a half notch under the QV70 and came with the quilted Napa seats. :-) And $13K less than the QV70. I test drove the NX (new 2022) and it was fantastic -- but SF Calligraphy was better. I bought the SF Calligraphy yesterday and very happy with my decision.

C'mon, Lauren. You list several competitors but you leave out the most obvious rival, the closely related KIA Sorento. Nearly identical overall size. Same engine and transmission. Same AWD system. Same infotainment system. Same blind spot cameras. Same (ridiculous) "Sounds of Nature" feature that reminds me of sleep inducing white noise machines. (We already have too many drivers falling asleep at the wheel.) And comparing the top trim Santa Fe Calligraphy trim and the Sorento SX Prestige X-Line MSRPs within $130 of one another. Differences? The most obvious is the standard 3rd row seating in the KIA. It's not generous to be sure. In a rare example of honest marketing KIA characterizes the 3rd row as "Plus 2" seating. But that undersells the feature to some extent. With 29.6" of default legroom, the Sorento offers 2" more than a Toyota Highlander. And adjusting the 2nd row allows even more legroom in the third. Most owners use the 3rd row only occasionally but I can testify that it's a huge convenience on occasions when the need to transport 6 or 7 passengers on a local outing would otherwise require two vehicles. Furthermore, the Sorento's 3rd row doesn't reduce overall cargo space when it's not deployed. Compared to the Santa Fe's 36.4 cubic ft of cargo space behind the 2nd row, the Sorento provides 38.4 cubic ft. Overall the Sorento offers 75.5 cf of total cargo space compared to the Santa Fe's 72.1 cf behind the first row. The Sorento's 3rd row enables the Sorento to provide another feature in its higher trims the Santa Fe lacks, standard second row captain chairs. Not possible in the Santa Fe without reducing the total passenger capacity to four. Offering separate seats in the 2nd row is a trend among upper trim and luxury 3 row SUVs but it's not necessarily a positive feature even for families without a mess of kids. We're a family of four, two adults and teenager and a big dog. Our canine family member's body shape means he needs a second row bench. And the new Sorento offers that only in the lowest trims. That means we won't be considering the top trim Sorento as a replacement for our 2018 version. Otherwise, differences between the Santa Fe and the Sorento are mostly (but not universally) a matter of personal taste. Personally, I find Hyundai exterior designs to be less attractive than KIA's. Almost as if Hyundai designers complete their work before the entire design is submitted to a committee that adds creases and bulges here, there, and everywhere. The Santa Fe's unique "smart park" party trick doesn't impress me. I would never park so close to another vehicle that I couldn't open a door. And if I returned to find someone had done parked so close by that I couldn't open a door enough to squeeze in I'd prefer an explosive sledge hammer I could activate from my key fob to resolve the problem. 😁 On the other hand, I have to admit that the fact that Santa Fe has retained driver's seat memory and driver's four way lumbar support in the vehicle is a major plus. KIA has inexplicably eliminated seat memory in all Sorento trims, reduced the previous 4 way lumbar support to two way, and eliminated the powered thigh extension in my current 2018 Sorento. Shame on you, KIA. If I were shopping for a replacement for our 2018 Sorento I'd be torn between the Santa Fe and the Sorento. I'd be hard pressed to give up the occasional benefit of a third row of seats and I prefer the styling of the Sorento. On the other hand our dog strongly objects to the elimination of a second row bench seat. And my wife for whom the Sorento is her daily driver says I'll have to pry her cold, dead fingers off the steering wheel if I insist on replacing it. Perhaps if the forthcoming PHEV Sorento includes the bells and whistles of the top trim SX-Prestige version and a bench second row we can consider it.

Looking for a new car but it MUST have lumbar for the passenger. I am so tired of the back pillow that my spouse must continually adjust. In some countries that are right hand drive the driver's seat has all the controls including lumbar on the right side of the seat. So the seat does exist. All Hyundai has to do is include it for passengers in countries that have left hand drive. A no brainer but the car is a no go at present. The same it true of the Tucson. That leaves the Ioniq5 if it ever gets to the USA or the great looking new Genesis GV70.

The base engine+transmission on the 2022 XRT is the worst in the 10+ cars I've owned. Acceleration power is virtually non-existent from stop or any speed. Forget about a quick lane change with oncoming traffic, or getting up to speed quickly from a stop. Perhaps this car is decent with the turbo engine, but otherwise stay away, much better options out there for the mid $30k spent on this car. There is also noticeable vibration on the steering wheel, as if the tires need balancing, even though it's brand new. I'm just shocked that an SUV in this price range and with so much competition can be such a disaster driving-wise.
