    It reminds me so much my first ride 1 year ago - I drove my brand new cb125f 80km from the Honda dealer to my home. Jerky ride, perpetually forgotten turn signal and accidentally turned on high beam all the time. I've almost erased it from my memory, so thanks so much for reminding me 😂

    Looking good! Keep practicing, but also keep in mind some goals: - smooth on and off the throttle. Roll the power on and off, don't snap. Roll quickly if you need to, but roll. You can practice right hand finesse in neutral - see how slowly you can apply power. - smooth off the clutch. It's bathed in oil, you could slip that thing all day. Take advantage of that, it'll help you get a good feel for it 😉 - you never want to snatch the front brake, that's the quickest way to be off your bike. Preload and squeeze. As with power, squeeze as quickly as you need to, but keep it smooth, not sharp. Your tyres can take a LOT of load, just not all in one go. I find it incredibly useful to practice emergency stops, it's built up my confidence in the bike's behaviour to the point of being able to lift the rear wheel. - speed is usually your friend, especially when taking off. Powering on from a standstill (up to 2nd gear) makes it easier to keep balance on the road. I hope "use with caution" goes without saying though. - learning to control your bike going slow (

    Yeah all good tips! I have done around 300 miles so far and have learned allot already. My commute has a good steep uphill section that is always slow moving stop start traffic which gives me a great opportunity to practice staying in the friction zone and doing hill starts on a daily basis. Feels great when I manage to pull off a buttery smooth hill start then stay in the friction zone to keep my speed around 4-5mph to keep with traffic. ☺️

    @@taydan04 Sounds like you've got a lot of it covered! Do you get the chance to ride off into the country side on weekends? I gained the most confidence taking a few long-ish trips (1hr ones at first, then 3-4hr 😉) on back roads I'd never been on in my car. Bugs on visor get annoying after a while, but it's a whole lot more fun than the short daily commute (mine is 7 minutes and it got boring on day 1 🤣) and you get the miles in quick. Btw are you aware of countersteering?

    @@233kosta yeah I have found the years of riding a bicycle on the road starting to kick in as I am getting more comfortable. Have found myself counter steering particularly while turning right on roundabouts kinda subconsciously. Yeah there are some nice quiet twisty country roads quite close to where I live that me and a friend frequently head over to on the weekend. I believe there is a video of them on this channel titled “Nice Country Roads”. :)

If you practice always being in 1st by the time you come to a stop you’ll be fine. ^^ Even if you click through all of them in one go, as long as you are still rolling, you should be fine. :)

    This video brings back memories! I sat my cbt in August 2021 and bought a CB125R. Due to the pingdemic it was a nightmare trying to get a theory test booked for my full licence. Managed to get a slot in March for the theory and passed then straight on to my direct access in April and passed my mod 1 and 2. Where I live the car drivers are shocking and when they see L plates they see you as a target and do their best to intimate you and try to run you off the road. As soon as the L plates came off the idiots didn't try to intimate me anymore. I'm not going to criticises your clutch control etc but with more practice you'll gain more confidence and that's when everything starts to click into place (including your gears lol) Good choice of starter bike too. I sat my cbt on a 125F. These little Hondas are very forgiving!

    Wow well done on the quick progression from CBT to DAS! I’m not sure I’ll be able to gather the confidence or the funds that quickly haha. Yeah I love the CB125F. It ticks all the boxes for me which is what made me go new rather than 2nd hand. It’s easy to ride, forgiving of newbies, lightweight, comfortable, roomy even for a 6’3” guy like me and who can forget the mileage! With petrol prices in the uk on a steady increase getting 400ish miles to a £15 tank is pretty incredible. Even after I upgrade to a full licence I probably intend to keep her as a super cheap commuter.

    Extremely refreshing to watch. Done a CBT yesterday with absolutely no motorcycle or moped experience. I'm an absolute petrol head i love driving and cycling. But this! I found extremely challenging. Clutch control was jerky, throttle control especially in first gear was not smooth at all, I wasn't using the rear brake enough let alone knowing what it was actually doing when I was using it..besides slow me down.... The anxiety of anticipating when to switch gears before coming to a stop or slowing down approaching a junction...Which gear am I in?????... the low speed manoeuvring uhg!.. I had no idea what I was letting myself in for. It's a lot to take on board in a day and doing everything all at once while maintaining the same if not a higher level of hazard perception while being on the road bothered me a little even though they said my progress was fine and doing well. I definitely wasn't reading the road as far as I usually would and I was always leaving my indicator on! With all that being said it was extremely liberating and can't wait to get back on a bike even if I felt like a liability. Long story short, I'm gonna collect this bike next week and practice. Seeing your video here displayed some reassuring similarities 😭😭 . well done and I'm gonna keep track of your progress!

    sounds exactly the same as i found m8. on the road part, I spent too much time trying to be perfect on the gears at the cost of the more important things, and the instructor said he didnt think he could give me the cbt as i needed another few hours practice, and TBH although i was disappointed had to agree with him. I've had a pretty much clean driving licence for 42 years, been a lifelong cyclist and ridden many scooters and 50cc automatic bikes on holidays so thought i would breeze it, but the reality was a little different lol, so im doing the extra training next monday and going to opt for an automatic which i feel confident will get the cbt, and then practice the gearing in a car park 300 yds from my home till i'm happy and feel more in control, which shouldnt take too long i think. Well done! I had a similar experience about 3 weeks ago when I got mine, being a bit older I had ridden a 125 in the past but that was 30 years ago, so I had the same problem with gears and gear changes to begin with. I guess I still have some muscle memory from before as after 3 weeks it has become more or less automatic but I found a little bit each day the best way to proceed. Unfortunately the bike has a head gasket leak so is going in for repair as soon as the warranty parts arrive. I have done about 900miles in the last 3 weeks and had the 600 mile service. I have to say that the whole CB 125 F functions much better after the oil change, acceleration, gear changes, clutch etc and from previous experience of other bikes the performance improves for 2-3000 miles or more as the parts bed in. I have had the same problem changing gear when the bike has stopped, especially if you stop in 3rd or higher, better to change down if possible before stopping, I have had to push the bike back slightly sometimes at junctions if it doesn't want to go from neutral to first gear. Have fun!

    Thanks! Yeah I’m hoping the gearbox frees up a little more as it breaks in. Atleast one occasion of getting stuck in gear has been after an emergency stop which kinda leaves me feeling exposed to being rear ended. But yeah the other times have just been me not planning ahead enough and being in the right gear by the time I get to a junction. Need to get it out on rides as regularly as possible to get those breakin miles out of the way. 900 miles in 3 weeks! That’s good going! Is that with commuting?

    @@taydan04 I live in West Cumbria so the main towns are 15 to 20 miles away but have had a concerted effort to practice riding and especially gear changing skills up and down the coast roads, so the mileage soon clocks up. As the miles go up the gearbox generally improves but I did have a problem on a busy junction in the first week where it wouldn't go into 1st so had to wheel it out of the way, eventually managed to get it in gear of course, sometimes it helps to change it up and then down. Like you say, emergency stops are the biggest concern as you are likely to be in a higher gear when it happens. When I approach a junction I try to anticipate in advance as to whether I need to stop or just slow down. If I need to stop I tend to put it in 1st just before finally stopping, at a very slow speed as that prevents the sticking problem, otherwise I will stay in 2nd. I suppose the main thing is not to panic, which was more difficult in the first week or so! The two other things I had to get used to is the low position of the foot brake lever and the position of the gear changer, but I am getting more familiar with them now. But yes its like a different bike after the oil change, the running in oil seems pretty poor at lubrication, like having sand in the engine. When you get nearer 1000 miles the acceleration over 40 improves too and its quieter at higher rpms than before. I temporarily fitted a tach meter wrapped around the spark plug wire. at 50 mph is doing around 6100rpm and in my experience....so far.....its most comfortable running at 5000 to 5500 rpm which is 45mph or thereabouts, but again it will probably be better at higher engine speeds when fully run in!

    Can confirm, engine feels a LOT happier 2k miles in! She'll happily get up to 60 and stay there. My arse isn't happy, but the engine is 🤣 As for getting into 1st from neutral, if you don't want to roll back, you can just let the clutch out in neutral first (and pull it back in, obvs). Gets it spinning and then it goes into first no problem. You can also hold it at the bite point (a tiny bit is all it needs!) and go down from 5th to 1st while stationary. If the lever is hard to push down, you've got too much clutch on. By the way, how the f-ck did you manage to blow the head gasket in 900 miles?

  • @truthseeker104

    @truthseeker104

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@233kosta Not sure why the head gasket blew, it wasn't my riding as I was very careful not to over rev or labour the engine, so I guess it must have been a faulty gasket. Anyway it has been ok since they replaced it under warranty, the also replaced the gasket at the bottom of the cylinder. Thanks for the tip about using the clutch when getting stuck in gears, I will have a practice at that before I need it. Generally I have got into the habit of changing down before stopping at the junction, but on the odd occasion when doing emergency braking I will need to do it. I generally find the seat is ok for about an hour or so and then need to stretch although I tend to run the bike between 45 and 50 on a clear run, most of the time as it sounds "happier" at those speeds. As A result of the blown gasket possibly being due to overheating, I have been looking around for better oils. They put Castrol Power 1 (semi synthetic) in it at the service but I have since changed it for Lucas synthetic motorcycle oil (it meets the specifications). I have found an improvement in performance, the engine is quieter and I am getting more mpg (currently about 170mpg). Overall its a great bike to ride and seems well designed with plenty of low end torque. Thanks for the tips!

  • @233kosta

    @233kosta

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@truthseeker104 Yeh, about 45 seems to be its efficient speed. Seat vibrations aren't too bad up to about 55mph, then they pick up and start to get unpleasant after a while. Downshifting becomes one of those default habits, you end up doing it without thinking. A lot of people advocate doing it while hard on the brakes (emergency stop), but at the beginner level that's more of a distraction than anything else. Do practice those in controlled conditions, by the way, you don't want to be discovering your front tyre's grip limit in an actual emergency. Regarding the head gasket, did you spend much time stuck in traffic with the engine idle and the bike not moving?

    i hope to get my cbt shortly, and of all the bikes i've seen the new cb125f looks great, and although i can afford a new one (which i suppose i really want) im a tad worried about dropping it and causing expensive & heartbreaking damage on my new toy in the early days, but as a newbie yourself (or anyone) who has jumped straight into a new bike what's your opinion?, as i'm considering second hand for a while till i gain more experience, however what puts me off that is that the prices of 2nd hand honda's/yamaha/suzuki seem really high, so the incentive to get one as opposed to new seems a little diminished, especially with the 2 year warranty and advantages of new. It's nice to have a choice i suppose, and atm i expect to keep on a 125 for a while and not want a bigger bike as it will be for fair weather fun around the yorkshire and scottish lanes mainly, and i expect to keep it for a while, so any help or advice is welcome. Hey there. Yeah I went through the same internal debate as you are now. Worried about dropping a brand new bike but finding that the price difference on 2nd hand made it seem not at all worth it. For me the decision maker was reliability. I commute every day on mine so I wanted something I knew wasn’t going to get me stranded on the journey. With 2nd hand, especially a 125 where the previous owner was probably also a learner, you never really know how the bike has been ridden. Whether it has been redlined down every road sort of thing. Wether it has been dropped already, whether the gearbox has and clutch have been abused etc. In my opinion, unless you can find a really good deal 2nd hand where the price difference is drastic I would make the same decision I made last time and go new. I find mine to be so much easier to ride than any of the older bikes I rode while doing my training and CBT. The CB125F is built to be a beginner bike through and through. It is hard to stall with a wonderfully light clutch and has much meatier tyres than allot of older 125s. And it has started on the button from cold every single morning without fail. It also gets an absolutely amazing fuel efficiency compared to older models. Especially if you are intending to keep the bike for a very long time. As then you could even look at the deal I went for with a hire purchase. I pay around £80 a month for 3 years with no balloon payment at the end so I will own the bike by the end. She’s a lovely bike to ride, has no problem keeping up with traffic on any road 60mph or below even with all 20st of me on her. I couldn’t recommend her enough to other new riders. There is also the possibility of installing crash bars if you are worried about dropping her.

    I am using the REAP Alarm disc lock available on Amazon for around £30. However I don’t recommend it as the alarm stopped working the first time it got wet. Perhaps something from a more reputable brand like Oxford will work better. :)

    I’d say like pretty much any 125. It was kinda rubbish. It seemed really bright but the beam scattered almost immediately so not allot of road gets lit.

    We’ll spotted haha. I was pretty nervous riding it for the first time which resulted in some poor indicating and not noticing the nice clear high beam light on the dash 😂. Im totally in love with the thing. It has a surprising amount of poke for a 125 considering the 120KG me sat on it haha. Can’t wait to take her out on some longer rides.

    @@taydan04 it's alot if fun and I was the same nervous as hell on my first ride I actually got up at 5am so the roads would be less busy 🤣, but the more you ride on your own the more comfortable you get with gearing before the first service I found gearing to be a big touch and go after a few miles it's soo much easier to anticipate what's happening in front of you and being the right gear, have fun man ride safe....what camera do you use by the way I'm looking to get one for the rides

    This was shot on a GoPro Hero 4 Black. Its an older model that a friend donated to me. Recording quality is pretty great, however the battery life is pretty pants at around an hour of recording. Though the battery is replaceable so if you are recording a longer ride you can take multiple charged batteries with you and pull over to change them when it dies.

    contructive criticism, first you start video an stearing is straight, so no stearing locked. and i would concider more lessons on clutch control , as you seem to just let go , an the bike lurches each time. keep the bike in gear longer when coming up to a junction . don't coast with clutch pulled in.

  • @taydan04

    @taydan04

    Yeah the bike had literally just come off of the back of the truck when the video starts which is why the steering lock wasn’t on. Had just gone inside to sort insurance and gear up to go straight out. Yeah clutch control in general is my biggest area I need to improve on. Clutching early has landed me stuck in gear a couple times now. ☺️
