If Youn Yuh-Jung wins the Oscar, it would be the first time in 20 years that a Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner doesn't get a Golden Globe nomination, which is what has me thinking it's not as clear-cut as you think it is. Yes, Maria Bakalova lost the Globe for Actress-Comedy/Musical, but so did Catherine Zeta-Jones for Chicago and she still won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, so I still think Maria Bakalova has a shot (even if Youn Yuh-Jung is the frontrunner). As for Anthony Hopkins, I'm rooting for him (I think he and Riz Ahmed are the best in that category), but I still think the Chadwick Boseman narrative is too irresistible. At least this way Hopkins has an award for this performance. I also think The Father has a better chance at Adapted Screenplay. It seems like the best place to honor it (and Chloé Zhao is already winning Director and Picture, so they may want to spread the wealth). Either way, Emerald Fennell will be winning Original Screenplay and will be the first woman since Diablo Cody to win that particular award.

I just saw The Father last week and it's insane to think that Hopkins wouldn't win this, any other year it would've been a cake walk. I would even think he should've won his second already last year with The Two Popes, that nomination was his path to a second Oscar. At first when I saw Ma Rainey I've accepted that Boseman is deserving to win even without his tragedy but after The Father, I can't say that anymore. It's crazy that we live in a world where Viola Davis could win the Oscar with Boseman losing. I wonder if that's how they're going to do it to assuage the possible backlash from a Boseman lost. Indie Spirit will be very interesting since Frances, Viola and Carey are all nominated although it seems like it means no shit, I mean Glenn Close won there and she still lost... I wonder if they may even go with Andra Day now. Im all for this exciting Best Actress race in ages but I just cant bear to see Sir Anthony Hopkins losing, when else can we reward this legend, man, what other lead roles can he possibly take after this??

  • @keeganthorpe

The fact remains however, that there will never be another opportunity to award Boseman. If the Academy loves Hopkins so much, why haven’t they given him a second Oscar in 30 years? It’s not like he retired after Silence of the Lambs. I think it’s tough to deny Boseman when you realize he gave that performance while sick and knew he was dying.

I think is dumb to not give Hopkins the Oscar because we literally have the example of boseman of how sometimes if you don’t recognize the talent maybe someday it’s going to be too late, and we have here a 80 some-year old who came back from a semi-retire to do one of the best roles of his career. I really hope that they invent some award to honor boseman and what he’d done to the black kids/community and then give the actor award to Hopkins because honestly he doesn’t have any competition, he’s a legend

But if they’re giving each actress one major award each ceremony then i can totally see her getting it. I just don’t think she needs to win right now. Her or Andra . Their nominations prove that they’re big in Hollywood and it will help their careers, especially Andra with a GG. It’s too early for them. And viola and frances have already won an Oscar, and the voters like to be democratic with handing those out, not overdoing thee wins too much with the same actors or films. objectively speaking, Anthony Hopkins gave the best male performance of 2020. The moment I saw it last year at Sundance, I immediately said it was THE best male performance of the year and he will be undefeatedable. No doubt Chadwick Boseman is so so great in 'Ma Rainey' but Hopkins performance is a flawless masterclass. The lead actress category is one of the tightest and unpredictable races in awards season history. Everybody got their trophies. McDormand and Mulligan has BAFTA and CC respectively and they got most of the critics awards, Kirby has Volpi Cup, Davis has the SAG and Day has Globes.

Meanwhile _The Father's_ editing, even though I'm not the biggest fan of stagy films, firmly puts you in the demented mind of Anthony Hopkins' character.

Trial won at the globes, just like Green Book, and I think it will win the Oscar. PYW has a big shot, but don’t count Trial out. Also, Promising Young Woman is a British film, just like the Father. @@mr.tintin6312 do you not think Trial has a chance at picture? I think it does. Especially after the SAG win. That said, Nomadland is definitely the front runner, and Minari could even come in and shock everybody. But Trial beat Minari (The only other major competition for picture besides Nomadland) at the SAG awards. I know Nomadland wasn’t nominated, but neither was 1917 the year Parasite won. In 2016 (For 2015 movies) Revenant wasn’t nominated at the SAG awards and was the clear front runner for Picture but Spotlight won SAG and the Oscar. I really think Trial could pull a Spotlight this year. Nomadland feels a lot like the Revenant and Roma. Trial feels a lot like Spotlight and Green Book. Also remember that MANY of the members of the Academy are 60+ years old and still vote for the big crowd pleaser films. Nomadland is the clear front runner, but it is not 12 Years a Slave, and I personally hope it doesn’t sweep. If a film sweeps, it better be as good or better than 12 years a slave IMO.

Mulligan and Davis would have mostly gotten in if there was no jury system.

@@rhythmoriented Agreed but I’d argue statistics are not to be trusted this year. Jodie Foster is the first supporting actress winner in 44 years to not be nominated for the Oscar. And other winners like Colman, Lawrence and Stone won in the Comedy category, where they were the only ones (Stone had Streep who wasn’t really competition that year) while the rest of the eventual Oscar nominees and their main competition (Close, Chastain, Huppert and Portman) were in the Drama category. I really don’t know if Colman would have won the Globe if she were to compete against Close in GG (it’s possible but not as easy). And the Globes were just weird this year. Sorkin won and then lost all steam, Music was nominated, Foster(already mentioned), Minari acting snubs (and now Youn is frontrunner), Bakalova lost even when she was the only eventual nominee from the Comedy actress category (and she was nominated for every precursor winning one). If Day had won CC, she’d be frontrunner, no doubt. Plus she’s the sole nominee in a bad film and not as established as Streep, Moore, Theron etc who won based off sole nominations. But rn, it’s anyone’s game imo (I’m saying Davis vs Mulligan with Day and McDormand right behind, Kirby is unfortunately out).

Ma Rainey was bit boring, and you're only able to watch it mainly due to performances. Anthony Hopkins deserves the award it's not just the best of the year performance but people will remember his performance in decades to come. Boseman does have upper hand due to emotional connection people have with him, and I think he will get the Oscar. Which is fine, as I reckon it will shine light on his career which wasn't long but very impactful for generations to come from 42 to Black Panther to Ma Rainey.

The Annies are in general much better resource when looking at the best animated feature of the year then any other award shownmy opinion, because their voted on by pepole who actually understand and respect animation.
