    The area off of Skilak Lake Road burned during the Swan Lake fire during 2019. It burned nearly 75,000 acres. That is why the fireweed is so prevalent there. It is the first to bloom after a burn. And lore is that when fireweed blooms to the top there is 6 weeks until the first snow.

    Angie, that's what we had heard, though didn't realize the fireweed grows as a result! We were very fortunate during our visit to Alaska in 2019 to miss the fires in Kenai Peninsula and elsewhere in the state (though we almost always had smokey conditions throughout our 2 month trip). Thanks so much for watching and we appreciate you sharing all the insider scoop on fireweed! 👍 -Howard

    You should have stopped at Wildman's in Cooper Landing to do your laundry....and have an amazing ice cream cone while you waited.

    You sounded like Mr. Rogers when you asked, “Do you know how to use bear spray?”

  • @NewstateNomads

    @NewstateNomads

    Now that you mention it, I can hear the resemblance! 😂 It's a little funny and kinda scary that so many people will buy bear spray, never practice with it, and just hope if the time comes they use it right. PSA for other viewers: take your can outside, practice releasing the safety, and give a quick spray to test your aim... 👍 -Howard

    Hi, fellow Highlander here. I've been following your Alaska adventure, looks like an awesome time with amazing sights. I think y'all are doing it right. Having fun. How do you keep up with the dogs? I'm about a year and a half away from heading up there as well. Planning to take one dog. Was curious. Enjoy your adventure.

    You mentioned bear spray...did you rent a canister somewhere and where? Or did you buy one, and where did you buy it? If bought it, it is good for how long, if not used, of course. Love the comment from mom!!!

    Terry, thanks as always for watching and great question! We bought our bear spray in 2019 during our first visit to Alaska. It is still not expired, and you can travel across the US/Canada land border with it. Would you be driving or flying up next year? You can find bear spray for sale EVERYWHERE in Alaska, but probably lowest prices will be at the Bass Pro or Cabelas in Anchorage. -Howard
