2020 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 S Test Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

March 1st, 2019 we had the chance to test the 2020 Polaris Scramble XP 1000 S in the Nevada Desert, leaving us keeping our review of the ATV Industry changing Scrambler S secret for six-months.
The long-travel, wide-track 2020 Sportsman XP 1000 S creates a new segment in ATVing bringing with it some much needed excitement to the world of ATVs. We could see the Sportsman S working hard on a big ranch, construction site, or being used to haul back big game from a hunt. It’s sure to be the dominant Sport Utility 4x4 ATV force in the desert, dunes. and a dream machine for those looking to take on many of today’s wider, gnarlier trails.
With no other machine in its class, the 2020 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 S is a more capable Sport Utility ATV designed to keep up with a changing off-road world.

This is cool, I dont know what people are complaining about. I can make it fit on tight trails plus it's got tons of travel to jump and take rough terrain at high speeds. Less likely to roll, more stable with a wider stance. The only place it would have a hard time is on some east coast trails where the forest gets pretty overgrown. I think this quad is awesome!

They are evolving into larger machines to house larger drive line components. Engines keep getting bigger and more HP but the drive systems have remained relatively the same. That’s why these 1000 owners are always snapping axles ect. You are witnessing the evolution into larger ATVs to house larger drive components. It’s a smart move if you actually want to make them reliable. In a few years ALL 1000cc quads will be 55 or more wide. That’s why japan won’t throw a 1000 in their quads because they know it will destroy their reliability reputation. The only option is to build a larger sized ATV to handle the power. If this increase catches on and works well you will see a 1000 Honda ATV. I guess this is the test run. Of course they give all these “ performance” reasons but the truth is the standard size 1000 stays tore up all the time. They are testing the market for accepting larger ATVs

I remember when the RZR S came out and everyone decried the increase in width. Then they rode in one and it became the standard and actually grew a few inches wider in time. Narrow is nice in very tight trails for sure but not all trails are extremely narrow. Even in the east. For 60” trails this thing will be incredible I’d wager. Expect other manufacturers to follow suit in the next few years after people actually try these. My side by side is slightly more than 60” wide with a longer wheelbase than these and there is nowhere I used to ride my atv that I can’t take my sxs. I’ll take better ride and stability any day

You said that the Sportsman plows more on braking and cornering than the Scrambler and attribute it in part to the wider rear tires. I have a different theory, based on my Sportsman XP 1000 - the winch and its mounting bracket. That is over 20 pounds for a 2500 pound capacity winch. This Sportsman has a 3500 pound rating, likely weighs more. I have an ATV jack that can be placed under the skidplate to lift the quad's 4 wheels off the ground. It reveals that the center of gravity for the Sportsman is further forward than it is on my Can Am 800. That too would tend to cause plowing. I suspect that's why the 1000 S places all its added wheelbase (4 inches) in front of the engine

It could be a variety of things, as @SRVDean mentioned it could certainly be u-joints but that would be unusual for the hours and riding style (unless it was a manufacturing error). It may very well be a normally functioning part of the suspension as well since it's compressing when you hit the throttle and decompressing when you get off of it. It's hard to know exactly what's happening from your description. Is that happening every time you engage the throttle and let off, or is just when you stab the throttle and let off quickly? Can't buy one right now because I got a stand Sportsman XP 1000 and too much other stuff to pay for right now and I'm sure they be quit selling them by the time I get ready to buy one. LOL But till then I do everything I can to my Sportsman XP 1000 I can think of and it's already 53inches wide and just saying I have tested the 2020 Scrambler S it doesn't seem that wide and if I get a Sportsman S by the time I put bigger tires on it maybe about 58inches or so .

Would like to have this with a small engine and a bit less weight. Love the idea of long travel and moderate speeds but the weight is too much. Honestly, 570 would be enough power with about 200-250 pounds less. Polaris has always been heavy.

Based on having owned a XP 850 Sportsman and currently owning a XP 1000 Sportsman, along with two Can Am 800 ATVs, my view is Polaris is 'missing the mark'. Rather than design a new ATV that is too wide to fit on 50 inch trails and weighs OVER 1000 pounds (Polaris advertised weight is dry weight - no fluids), there is much more need for them to address existing issues. 1) Quality control has been mediocre at best - well below that of Can Am 2) Mediocre honoring of warranty issues (defective fuel pump has been a particularly annoying issue for 5 years and they STILL fail to acknowledge it and make it next to impossible to have it replaced under warranty. This occurred on my 2015 model in 2016 and on BOTH 2019 XP 850s that a married couple own nearby. And dealers have acknowledged it is a common problem 3) Loose (spongy) power steering - no match for what is on the Can Am. This becomes apparent at speed. But even in park with the engine off, you can wobble the handle bars a couple degrees side-to-side with zero motion at the wheels. This leads to vague handling at speed. 4) Terrible shifter (compounded by clutch and pre programmed idle speed) Sorry, but barring them addressing these issues, my next big bore ATV will NOT be a Polaris. The games Polaris plays with honoring warranty issues (especially the fuel pump) and the absolutely abysmal shifter operation have been WAY too persistent as to be downright grating.

Wouldn't consider it burying them. Sounds like you have owned enough of their machines to have a valid opinion. Test rider Chad Westcott and his crew have pointed out that our Scrambler s loaner unit is beginning to have more play in the steering just like their personal Sportsman 1000. Seems like all power steering machines have a little play in the steering but it doesn't necessarily get worse over a few hundred miles. Thanks for sharing your input we do appreciate it.

@@ATVonDemand My XP850 was a 2009 vintage, back when it was also offered without power steering. Even on the showroom floor, before I bought the XP 850 (with power steering), I could feel much more play in their units with power steering than those without. One of the ways used to detect and react to torque is to measure angular displacement (torsional strain). Cam Am used to advertise that they used a different sensing means (possibly piezo-resistive). The end result can be felt in the handle bars. All of the XPs I've driven (6 of them) have had more play even when new than my 2011 Can Am XXC 800 with 6000 miles on it. P.S. I still own a 2005 Sportsman 800

Eaen Joiner I hear ya. I always rode sport quads. Bought a 400ex new in 2001 and rode it almost 15 years. Back then a good sport rider could shoot up steep hills that the 4wd guys couldn’t do. We could build lots of steam really quick and slingshot ourselves up a hill. Of course now the big 4x4s have the power to do that so the sport quads died out. My favorite part is having a manual clutch and 5 speed. I’d love to have a scrambler or renegade 1000 with a manual clutch and foot shifter. Won’t ever happen but you can dream 😢. Who knows though..maybe Honda will roll out a v twin sport 4x4 with a manual clutch and surprise us
