2020 MG ZS EV Review: Making Electric Accessible?

2020 MG ZS EV Review
Please note, this video was filmed before the Coronavirus outbreak in the UK.
Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession. So, you think electric cars are expensive? That's not so in the case of the new MG ZS EV, the first ever electric car to come from the British/Chinese manufacturer. On face value alone, it looks to offer great value, but is it any good? This review will give you the answer.
The MG ZS EV is available in two trim levels; Excite and Exclusive, which have respective starting prices of £25,495 and £27,995. The latter features in this video, offering standard features such as 17" alloys, silver roof rails, leather style seats, heated front seats, 6-way electronically adjustable driver's seat, 8" touchscreen with DAB radio, Bluetooth, navigation and smartphone connectivity, air conditioning, rear parking sensors with reversing camera, a health amount of safety kit, plus more... There is also a 7 year warranty as STANDARD.
Powering the MG ZS EV is a 44.5 kWh battery which of course feeds its power to an electric motor which turns the front wheels. 143hp is produced along with 353Nm of torque (260 lb ft), meaning 62mph is dealt with in 8.5 seconds and the top speed is 87mph.
However, what you really want to know, is the range. The ZS EV is able to command a range of 163 miles, which isn't exactly groundbreaking, but it should be just fine for those looking to use the car in an urban environment.
In regard to charging times, it can go from 0% to 80% in 40 minutes when using a 50kW charger and it can be charged from 0% to 100% in 6.5 hours when using a 7kW charger.

Good evening everyone, I do hope you're well and keeping you spirits up in this difficult time. I do hope you enjoy my in-depth review of the new MG ZS EV - the first ever electric car to come from the British/Chinese brand.

What I particularly like about this car is how... normal it looks. So many EVs have such outlandish styling which is cool but can be far too bold for the average buyer and this is hampering the progress of EV sales. The MG doesn't scream electric car at all and I think this is to its advantage.

Well done on this review! I did see this car in last years London Motor Show. Its good to see that the MG brand is making good and steady progress and buyers need make no apologies for their purchase.

Using the MG brand has a reassuring aspect, it works better than "Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation". This car is 100% built in China :(

I have an MG ZSEV, and I cant have a home charger in my London terraced street. So far I have not had a problem although I am lucky to live in a borough that is serious about providing infrastructure to charge.

Major shortcoming is lack of app to prewarm/defrost whilst its still sat plugged in. From what I hear its available in some markets and the car is ready for it but the app needs converting to English so hopefully its coming. Also if they added a couple of grand on it and got a 60kwh battery in for the extra money would still sell like crazy.

I've got one, and this "major shortcoming" hasn't been noticed (not by me at least). With a home charger, unless you're doing 120 or so miles a day, the battery size and range is fine. As it's an electric the heating is pretty instant, and better than waiting for an older technology ICE engine to warm up before it heats the inside.

Sorry about being a bit dumb but on a fast charge will it charge the batteries to full or only 80%, if it's only 80% then how can I fully charge the batteries without being able to do it from home , cheers Jared and sorry again about sounding think

  • @CarObsession

Hello Brian, thanks for watching, and thanks for commenting. When using a fast charger, it will get to 80% and then past that point, it will reduce the charging capacity and revert to a slower charge pattern. So it will get to 100% but the charge will become slower from 80% onwards.

Nice, but I think we should be looking at entry level prices nearer £15,000 for cheaper electric cars to become popular. I think prices are still too high and assume manufacturers are trying to get a return on their investment in the short / medium term rather than playing the long game. I also think that the government allowance on each new car really ends up in the pocket of the manufacturer rather than the consumer because of inflated pricing. Until there are a lot of EV vehicles appearing on the used car market and a better network of charging stations many people will still opt for ICE cars.

Great for the price, would've been even greater if they'd kept it as heavily discounted as before (I think even the Exclusive was cheaper than the Excite is currently), but MG has to make money somehow.

Absolutely fantastic car, have driven a couple of these (including the very car you actually drove), and they are brilliant. The suspension is a bit soft, although it does make the ride quite comfortable, and some of the interior plastics are a bit hard, but it is still my favourite electric car.

@@CarObsession, absolutely! The warning bongs drove me completely mad (I spent over a minute in my review just on that point as it was a bit of a pain), and it's definitely not perfect, but as an easy way into an electric car for the majority of people it is very, very good and sales have been correspondingly strong. Glad you managed to get this all filmed before the lockdown!

Manual climate control and no tinted windows is a no go 🙅‍♂️ … 4 wheel drive would also make it a very interesting alternative.

Hi Daniel, thanks for watching, and thanks for commenting. The problem with four wheel drive is that it would push the price up, which would pretty much take away the whole point of this vehicle being affordable.

i see we did not mention a number of areas were this car falls down. you did not bring up slow and laggy info screen. if you use cruise control the car uses brakes and not regen. the car has one of the poorest miles to a kwh of a lot of ev's on the market. so is there for more expensive to charge up. unless it has been changed the car bleeps a lot. you can not heat or cool the car while charging and the car doors need to be locked. there has been a number of issues turn up if you watch all MG you tube video which if your interested in this car you should watch before buying

@Wooly Chewbakker I own one too in Australia and I agree 100% with all your comments. Is it fun to drive? It’s so much fun and this is from a tragic sports car fan including an MG TC back in the day. EV legendary torque is very addictive.
