    A used low mileage 2th gen Scion Xb over all this .. and I will endure the 4 speed tranny & the mediocre mpg instead of paying 3 times the amount for an unreliable Kia .But if you absolutely want to buy new and get screwed by depreciation , the Honda HRV seems to be the best direct competitor .

    I have a 2014 KIA Soul+. It is without a doubt the best and most trouble free car I have had, It has had three cross country trips (7000 miles each. Arizona to New Jersey) I have replaced one set of tires and a battery, that's it. I am now in my eighties and this is my 49 car and probably my last.

    I can't believe I'm saying this about a Toyota, but I really dig the exterior styling of the C-HR. I can deal with the less cargo space of the C-HR but the power-to-weight ratio is a buzz kill for me. If Toyota could drop a couple hundred pounds then maybe. With that, I'd go Kia Soul. The KIA without question. The warranty advantage versus Toyota's well earned reputation for reliability. But I've owned two KIA's and I spent not one dollar more owning it than if its warranty was an hour and half. Each has been totally reliable and durable. My experience with KIA dealers is that real world pricing with a dealer is considerably less than MSRP. Not so with a Toyota dealer. So I strongly suspect I could purchase an upper trim Soul for the actual price of a mid-trim C-HR. Performance. I'd go for turbo 4 that isn't even available from Toyota. Versatility/Practicality. No question on that score. Kia without a doubt. As for style/looks, around Seattle I see everyone from hipster millennials to senior citizens in Souls. On the funkiness dimension alone the Soul takes the prize. The C-HR strikes me as a nice little daily driver. The Soul is that and much more.

  • @stephenhendricks103

    @stephenhendricks103

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@moeanthony9308 Toyota sets the bar in terms of resale value. But what that means in terms of actual dollars is frequently misunderstood. If you keep a car for, say, two to three years, the difference in various brands' resale value can be substantial. But if you hold onto a car for, say, six to eight years, the margin is much less significant. Furthermore, the difference in absolute dollars lost through depreciation depends on the initial price paid. A $5OK automobile that loses 40% of its value is a loss of $20,000. A $25K vehicle with the same depreciation curve loses $10,000 in value. Not only do you save $25K in the initial purchase price, you save an additional $10K in depreciation. If you want to lose a lot of money via absolute or relative depreciation, buy a German luxury automobile or a Lexus and replace it two years after you purchase it. I can't speak to the expected depreciation of a KIA Soul versus a Toyota C-HR but last year I traded a six year old top trim KIA Sorento for a 2018 model. The dealer gave me within $800 of the Blue Book estimate of a comparable trim Toyota Highlander in the same (excellent) condition and same mileage. Considering that I purchased the KIA in 2012 for about $8000 less than the best offer I received for the Toyota, I made out like a bandit. So did my dealer. He sold the KIA I traded in 48 hours for $4000 more than he paid me for the car.

    The 2020 Kia Soul is a fantastic value in all fronts. I'm the proud new owner of a 2020 cherry black LX 6MT. All my previous cars have (with the exception of my 97 Audi A4 QT) been either 2 seaters or 2 door coupes; all of them with manual transmission. This is my 1st crossover/ small SUV-like vehicle ever, and so far I thing I can live with the Kia for the next 10years without regret. My reasons for buying it: (1) practical (comfortable, well appointed basic interior, good cargo space) (2) moves me from A to B with great mileage with reliability and a good warranty (3) is as light as possible ("Weight is the enemy") (4) It has some personality and style (I have owned each of my cars for 10 years + each, so I need to like the styling) (5) And more important, it comes available with a stick shift at some trim level. No car with small economy engines should come without some manual transmission options. My motto is KISS (Keep It Simple & Stupid). I have been driving cars since the early 80's and I have not had any need at all for any of these expensive new gizmos and "safety" crap (Proof: I'm still alive and kicking). So get off the damn phone and pay attention while driving people!

    Bought my 3rd Soul. My new 2020 is great. They improved upon the previous generation in all the right places. Increased ground clearance, Android Auto standard (not available on the Toyota CH-R who's rear seat was DREADFUL), slightly larger than the old model (102 cu ft passenger volume, dramatically bigger than a CH-R), Kia ISG Auto Stop/Start standard again not on a CH-R at all. Better MPG & I personally love CVTs & prefer it to the previous generation's 6-speed auto. Digital trip computer readout, speedometer & individual tire pressures displayed vs that likely absurd coffee cup warning on the Toyota (like my 2018 RAV4 had). I looked at a CH-R for about an hour & it was just far too inferior to even consider to a Soul. I do agree with a post here on the Scion xB having been a good vehicle. I may have bought one of those if Toyota offered it. My last complaint is Toyota Sales People, Sales Managers & Fans will speak of "impeccable reliability" & "never needing repairs". Why doesn't Toyota put their money where there mouths are then & back their vehicles with a modern warranty? 3YR/36,000 miles is absurd in 2019 to me.

    You mentioned every trim level for the Soul except the most competitive from a feature/value perspective, the EX. For only slightly more than the plasto-clad X-Line and about $6k less than the GT-line Turbo, you get most of the safety tech (sans adaptive cruise and LED lamps), the big 10.25" touchscreen, power drivers seat, projector lamps rather than standard halogens, the 2 height rear load floor (also in the GT Turbo) allowing a flat rear load space, rear center armrest with cup holders and the best fuel economy in the lineup at 29/35/31. I don't think there's any trim level of C-HR that can match specifically the EX trim on value. Just sayin'.

You can get many amenities not seen in the X-Line including a wireless charger, more safety equipment, heated seats and steering wheel, rear armrest, illuminated sun visor, and remote keyless entry for only $23,000 CAD. I looked at test drove both cars. Not only was the Kia cheaper for me but on the higher end models the Toyota is not even a competitor. It was a no brainer for me to buy the Soul. The GT's turbo and 7 speed DCT are amazingly fun to drive and the handling on the GT model steps it up a notch from the vehicle tested here. Anyone who thinks Kia quality isn't on par with Toyota needs to crawl back under a rock. Soul fan for sure. Toyota does offer more features per dollar though. The GTLine Turbo on the Soul has every modern day bells and whistles that you can't find anywhere else for sub $30K car. KIA has always been cheaper to buy off the dealer showroom floor. With some good negotiation skills you can get the top of the line GTLine Turbo down to $27K or less with incentives and rebates. Toyota doesn't have much room for price reduction from MSRP in my experience, at least not as much as KIA does.

    Hate to break it to you but the CHR is not good for a small family at all. It's better for a single person in college or highschool. This thing is tiny inside and has a very claustrophobic back seat. My sister-in-law has one and it barely fits a convertible car seat and when you do get it in, good luck having anyone sit in front in the front seat of it. It doesn't even fit a stroller very well. I will say the driving dynamics are not bad at all, it's very fun to drive but then your constantly reminded of that awful CVT that gets very annoying especially on the highway.

    I'll probably buy a 2020 or 2021 Kia Soul. It's a well designed car with a lot of standard options for a reasonable price. The second factor is Kia's warranty. It's a lot better than Toyota which is what matters to me. I've had drivetrain issues in my last two cars that were not cheap and happened way too early (right outside warranty). I will say overall ownership costs will probably be the same for most buyers as Toyota will get the extra cost returned back to them with trade in value.

    I have the 2020 Soul Kia ex and overall is a great car. After a recent snow/ice I had a second of regret about it not being awd. My relatives have the Toyota it’s nice, but forget your knees in the backseat. I was actually looking at another Kia but having driven a soul as a rental I decided to test the one in the showroom. Don’t regret it at all-

    I leased a 2020 Soul S line. Good news - I really like it. Bad news - I had to have the transmission replaced at just 4,000 miles. It was really dangerous, as I was on a highway traveling four hours to home. It took over a month to get the car back. I have always wanted a Soul, but I prefer the early designs.

    I had 2015 limited edition Soul. I like getting a new car for < 18K, and it so hard to get a manual. Nissan Sentra standard can only be found in Canada. Entry level Soul (LX) lacks Sirius XM. Nice review.

    Soul is a fun utility vehicle, CHR is a fun heavy hatchback with not much utility, you might as will get the corolla hatch much more fun and lighter and just a little less space. Soul hands down as a utility vehicle. Of course there is the Civic Hatch which has way more space than CHR and faster and better handling so maybe that's the real winner!

    My friend has a Soul and I have a CHR. The CHR handles way better. The Soul definitely has more interior space, but side-by-side the CHR is a way better looking vehicle. Out of the two CVT‘s I would go with Toyota hands-down they’ve had way less issues with engine and transmission‘s than Kia has.

    To be fair here. The interface you portray is from 2018. For 2019 it is Entune 3.0 and different interface. It is not dated. Yes no Android auto but it is a significantly bigger improvement over last year. Bigger screen too 8 inch.
