I was a BMW guy for years, my last being an R1200GS Adventure oilhead, which I loved. But the cost of ownership was murder, so I bought the Africa Twin with electronic suspension. No regrets. It’s beautifully made, with quite enough power where you need it, and it’s a bit more comfortable than the BMW, for me, because of the firm seat, as Mark mentioned. Despite the 21-inch front wheel, it tips in easily with neutral handling that inspires confidence. BMWs are fabulous bikes, but far too expensive for me, both in initial cost and in running costs. Honda’s got a real winner here.

Nice review. For the records, I purchased a 2020 CRF1100 Adv Sports in June in the Montreal, Quebec area. 110km from home, on the inaugural ride, engine died. Gas tank was full of gas. Managed to ride back to dealer and engine died about 5-6 times on the way to the dealer. Bike was in the shop for 5 days. It was a known problem from other owners but Honda never publicized or made an official recall. Was found to be a fault in the gas tank welding seams that creates a whitish powder that clogs the fuel pump, injectors, gas lines and spark plugs. Gas tank problem only reported on the 24litre tank. New gas pump, injectors and plugs replaced on warranty. Now with 7600km, runs great!

Hi Mark thanks for pointing this review out for me. I have a 2021 ATAS ES plus manual in the black and gold. Great review, I agree with all you are saying. It does the lot for me commute, quick blasts and more importantly 2 up tours with ease in fact rides the same fully loaded my old tracer 900gt struggled with suspension 2 up fully loaded. It's so easy to ride and relaxed. Co trols are easy to get used to you don't really need to touch much on the move, android auto means no need for a sat nav, ES can be adjusted on screen or via buttons. Only criticism the side stand leans the bike over a little too much need to check where you land it as can be a bugger if too inclined. 24.8 litre tank great and avg of 54mpg over 4.2k miles and around 330 miles from full to empty impressive. Great review!

Great review mate! Got the 2016 CRF1000 DCT - Fully kitted with OEM Panniers and Top case. Added Armor protection, Air Vents, Bash Plate and Engine Guards. Slapped on some Enduristan Blizzard M’s Rackless soft pannier for more technical off-road rides. Love it and considering buying a 2020 or 2021 model...still on the fence for getting another DCT or not. I had some issues with technical stuff and “whiskey throttling” in the deep ruts...not fun without the ability to kill the engine force with a “Clutch” when going/coming in or out of a deep rut a bit too hard. 🇨🇦

Got the fully kitted out dct Africa twin adventure sports with electronic suspension after trading another bike in for it. I was surprised to like dct so much after the demo. It’s a great bike for miles and comfort. Love the CarPlay too. Having navigation at the top with the lower lcd dash showing basics is a great option. Great bike to do anything on it. Surprised that the large 21 inch wheel seemed so good on the road. I got 320 miles out of a full tank with still a little left. Casual B road and motorway riding. I’d say more spirited riding you would still get close to 300. Tall bike. Might be difficult for some people to manage. I got the tall padded seat as it’s deeper and more comfy. I’m around 6ft 3. Good video mate hope you do some more soon. Both black and hrc coloured versions have great paintwork. I prefer the hrc colours on it however. Quality appearance and build Honda are hard to beat for finish quality. Only thing I would say is you spend a lot of tweaking things in the settings and it’s easy to get quite close to someone in front while playing with settings! Care is needed. Love the way Honda have focused on torque from the fabulous twin.

I prefer the 1100L, but I'd have the DCT. And I like its lower screen. The retractable screen on the reviewed bike doesn't go down far enough. Too many riding modes etc., though. I think I'm going to settle for the NC750X DCT for longer distances here in the far north of Thailand. Your reviews are superb. Everything a prospective owner would need to know is covered.

If you mean the red, white and blue colour scheme then that is reserved for the sports version and is the HRC colours since the early 1980s or perhaps even earlier. Possibly the colours originate from when Rothmans cigarettes sponsored their racing team.

I don't know about the AT. It has always interested me but not really much more than that. I did try to get a test ride on one a couple of years ago as I was seriously considering an adv bike, but my Honda dealer in Peterborough are terrible. Must have gone in 4 times over a few months and on each occasion I was ignored until eventually some said hello to me, but even then they were in too much of a hurry as they were paper shuffling and couldn't really be bothered as like you I am a shorter rider and they didn't have any low seat bikes despite having about 6 of them in the show room. Anyway it was rather an unsatisfactory experience so thought sod them if they can't bothered to try and help me buy one. So I went to the KTM dealer and it was like chalk and cheese. They in contrast were really helpful and patient. I looked at a couple of bikes but fell in love with 2, the 790 Adv R and 1290 SDR. I think this Honda CRF 1100 AS is still a heavy bike and would struggle off road especially with that tank full of fuel on top of the engine and with panniers and top box on the back. Also previous AFs had problems with the spokes corroding after only a short time which is not good. The KTM 790 Adv R has similar power but is a lot lighter with the low fuel tanks plus it has adjustable suspension, illuminated switch gear and I think the TFT and electronics package is better and you'd be able to handle it better off road in gravel and on trails. Thanks for the review Mark. Interesting. How many times did you say boom? When you said it, it reminded me of Blackadder 4, Baldrick's famous poem The German Guns - Boom, boom, boom....... boom, boom boom .....BOOM, BOOM,BOOM ...........

And in the UK is there anywhere to ride them properly off road? not talking about off road small circuits, more proper long trails like they have in say US, Canada, S Africa and Australia or the Stans. Really thinking of one for a long bike tour say the TET and riding on into Asia, but atmo CV has made things very uncertain. How's your Trophy doing? Thanks for replying.

I got a real bollocking from the Aprilia guy as I had got the day wrong, should have ridden it the previous day, but I no showed. I was very very apologetic when I did arrive, but it was still a real genuine telling off. Then when I brought it back after about 45 mins he was very pushy for me to buy it, no how did it go? Just straight out, are you going to buy it in an irritated sort of manner. Then he turned rude and shitty when I said I wouldn't because the riding position didn't suit me as I got pain in between my should blades as it had really wide bars on it. Anyway I haven't been back since. I think my next bike is going to be KTM as the dealer near by seems pretty good. The future is orange.

Nice video mark. Im about same build, and height/leg, v.interested in your POV. Comparing this AT to the tenere700, the AT being tall&large whilst the t7 is taller&thin, which do you think would be easier to live with day-to-day size-wise?

Hi well i was really surprised how easy the AT was to get on with ....the extra weight you dont notice and seat height is now fine ...i think earlier models were very tall..i know its alot more money over the tenere but for me its ride experience/quality is worth it all the best mark

@@markpulling12 thank you for taking time to reply. Enjoying your videos. Not every rider is 6ft+, so its very useful to have a view of these adventure bikes (and larger bikes in general) from your perspective. When you do find something unmanageble pls provide a health warning for us shorter riders, lol. Absolutely love the look of this AT and previous model. Thanks again

finally tubeless in 2020. and you can see its made in japan, because no other reason to have lcd from 1976 to have on bike in 2020. I know why its there, but still it can be managed in more elegant way...

Had 2 of the previous models, heard horror stories about the new models with corrosion around the inside of the filler cap and Honda still haven’t sorted the spoke issue.. Decided against buying another so chose the S1000XR, rather glad I did !! Shame as it was a good bike but I’m sure the sales for Honda will still be strong. Ride safe
