2020 Highlander Hybrid | Fuel Sipping 3-Row With 8 Seats

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Looking for one of the most efficient 3-row vehicles in America? Look no further than the all-new Highlander Hybrid. At the moment this is the only 8-seat hybrid in America and one of the few CUVs to get over 35 MPG. If you need the extra seats and want to save fuel, this is hands down one of the best options for the moment.

Probably it's unusual comment on this channel, but thank you. I'm improving my English listening skills from your videos. You have quite clear pronunciation. I like videos about hybrid cars. This is technically interesting and a good solution in general for those countries where electric-cars infrastructure is not yet good enough but people has ability already decrease pollution and fuel consumption. Also, they seem became much more reliable in past few years.

I would like to know how it handles climbing long hills or driving in the mountains. Will it slow down significantly depending on the grade of the hill? Do the electric motors assist in the braking when going down a long or steep hill? I drive a Honda Pilot which I like a lot. The Toyota Hylander Hybrid would increase my present gas mileage by 50%. I live in Ohio and have only used the 4 wheel drive maybe twice in four years. So maybe the front wheel drive only would be my best bet price wise. Thanks for an informative video review!

You asked great questions but these new Highlander Hybrids won't be available for purchase or longer term testing until late Winter. These reviews posted on KZread are all based on one day's driving in Texas in ideal conditions. In Ohio I would definitely pay the small extra charge for the AWD system. AWD will help in inclement weather and towing. We will see how long it takes for Honda to come out with their own Hybrid Pilot as the Hybrid CR-V is already on the way. The new RAV4 Hybrid has been so popular that buyers have often had to wait months to get one. I suspect something similar will happen with the Highlander Hybrid as 35-36 mpg is a fantastic achievement in this class of vehicle.

Unless you are in the small minority that routinely tows 5,000 lbs with your Highlander, the 35-36 mpg and more than ample 3,500 lbs tow rating make the Hybrid decision easy. As a bonus it is, "Quieter and more refined than the V6 it replaced." Choose the reasonably priced LE AWD and Bob's your uncle.😁

Love Toyota Hybrids, they are the best family cars you can buy - I have the Rav 4 Hybrid (2016) -the new model is even nicer. With the new category of all weather tires (not as good as snows in winter but much better than all seasons), it destroyed the massive Feb Seattle snow storm, which was deep and our roads are hilly. Incredible efficiency (easy 32 plus mpg) and solid acceleration. Top notch reliability and durability. Two minor cons 1) On long steep mountain passes, the car is slow. It's because the battery depletes and the engine now has to pull the car up a grade AND recharge the battery. It's a scenario I come across once every 2 years. This is NOT an issue on Mt passes like Snoqualmine, but super steep ones like Highway 20. 2) Aggressive traction control cuts power if car is spinning all wheels on ice. This happens if at least both front and one rear wheel is on ice/has no traction, anything better and it will pull through - if you find yourself in this situation its really time for studded/ice optimized tires.

However, I'm not looking for an off-roading vehicle and I just want AWD because I live in the NE. So, I'm thinking going with the Hybrid system and snow tires should get me through most snow scenerios. yeah snow tires make a much bigger difference than AWL (I have both on my 07 MDX which I swap during winter). But in California they require AWD or chain when you go to the snow... car industry has been pushing AWD as for safety but that does nothing for stopping or cornering. Check videos online of rear wheel overpowered cars with snow tires vs 4wd (alas summer tire) going up an icy hill and it's not even close...tires matter much more.

Kia and Hyundai have made significant strides to close the gap in quality, but a Toyota will have a better resale value directly DUE to reliability. A Hyundai telluride hybrid would suck. Remember the Hyundai fuel efficiency scandal. A hyundai telluride hybrid would also be much smaller than the highlander hybrid to achieve anywhere the same mpg numbers. There is a reason why other companies are shying away from creating hybrids in the 3 row cuv segment and are instead going for size and horsepower. They simply can't match toyota,s expertise in hybrids. Toyota simply rules hybrid technology and are the only company with the ability put out a decently sized vehicle with very good mpg numbers. Looks at the Mitsubishi Outlander plug in. To get a descent all wheel drive plug in, they had to severely reduce the size of the vehicle and still the mpg numbers are much lower than the bigger 2020 Toyota highlander. In this segment, the only thing that matters to large families is fuel savings. Other companies put out high horsepower or bigger cabins but Toyota is putting out high mpg and decent but not a huge sized vehicle. A huge sized vehicle will cut down mpg. Once Toyota gets their solid state batteries which will be super lightweight, the can upsize the highlander prime a bit to give it more leg room and bump the horsepower to 350hp and still achieve 35mpg in all wheel drive. The solid state batteries may not be ready till 2025.

On paper this is the vehicle for my family. We want the best mpg possible, to put two car seats plus one adult in the 2nd row, and have a 360 cam to help with parking. Maybe twice a month we’d put one petite adult in the third row. I don’t think there’s any alternative that’s better. The problem is whether we like the Highlander Hybrid when we actually test drive it. Last year I drove the non-hybrid and felt really lukewarm about it. I’d totally go for the Pacifica PHEV if only it offered a bench 2nd row.

This month we unfortunately found ourselves in the position of needing to replace our 2015 Highlander because it was totaled in a collision. Had it happened a few months from now the 2020 hybrid would have been the obvious choice - we even contemplated buying a beater for a few months to wait it out, but the uncertainly around when they’ll actually arrive and buying the first copy of the first year of a major redesign made us a little nervous. 35+ mpg in an AWD vehicle this size is remarkable and basically a class of one. We ended up with a Subaru Ascent, which we love, but love a little less at the gas pump.
