I went to the 2019 Long Beach Progressive International Motorcycle Show and rode as many bikes as I could. One unexpected entry was the 2020 Harley-Davidson Iron 1200, one of the remaining Sportsters left in H-D's lineup.

    This is the first bike I bought (just learned how to ride last year) and I was scared for the first 6 months because I hardly had time to ride. I just now got the 1000 mile mark on this bike and I had it since October 2020, but I am now focusing on making more time to ride because it's becoming "a way of life" feel to me now. I absolutely love this bike. I ride this more than my car now. I ride alone because I don't know anyone who rides. I still haven't rode the interstate because I still have that high speed fear mainly due to the slightest wind making it feel like I'm going to blow over.

Once you have that, you need need to have it for a certain amount of time before you can take a riding test and get your motorcycle endorsement. It really is a fun cruiser! 🤓 Just to be clear, the dimensions for the 883 and the 1200 are nearly exactly the same, so one shouldn't look "look smaller" than the other. The main difference between the two is the engine displacement (883cc vs 1200cc), the tank paint, and the handlebars.

    Quick question. So I will be a new rider soon and I'm considering the iron 1200. I'm 5'6" and have only bicycle experience in my past. I do plan on taking the MSF course and the new rider course by Harley Davidson. Is the Iron 1200 a good first choice for me?

  • @thatoneguymoto

    @thatoneguymoto

    3 жыл бұрын

    Generic answer is yes. I think it will depend on how you feel handling a cruiser after you've completed your MSF course. If you're sure you're going to ride a cruiser when you get your license, make sure you get on one during the course, then multiply the weight of that 125cc bike by about 2, and imagine what that'll feel like. Even before you get your license, you can head on over to a dealer and sit on one to get an idea. The power is very linear, meaning you're not going to be overwhelmed and jerked around on it, and once you're moving you don't notice the weight. Hope that helps. Good luck with your course, and making your choice. 👍🏽

    It's really a matter of taste. I personally think you get more for your money with the Scout Bobber, but the Iron has a unique style. If I was forced to only have one, I'd go with the Roadster 1200, and not the Iron, but again, totally personal preference.

    Do the 883's and 1200's have a future in Harley's strategy as the new 975's and 1250's roll out? You're sitting on 60HP, 67 lb-ft, 5 speed which is well below the competition. The Triumph Speed Twin for example at $12,500 comes stock with 96HP and 83 lb-ft and has a real gas gauge. The Indian Scout Bobber at $12K+ stock 100HP and 72 lb-ft.

    @Gene Clarke This is a great question and you make totally valid points. However, in the segment, it has a lot more to do with style, than anything else, and I think the fact that the 883 is still a relevant choice speaks to that. So, despite the numbers in favor of other options, the Sporty, IMO, could still hang with the others. We'll have to wait and see whether it will, or not, and if the 1250 Custom is coming to take it's place.

    Being honest. Im a diehard softail guy. I ride a 30 year old softtail custom with the old 1340 cc motor. Long trips short trips. It soldiers on. I dont do windsheilds or any thing. Like my bikes smooth. Truthfully any bike with no wind protection windshield fairings etc..cruising about 80 is comftorable. Get much above that. The wind noise and blast is annoying after a while. My old softtail with 30 years on it will still do 120 all day with a 5 speed. Not all that fun. The wind and noise really hit you. Doesent matter how much power ur bike has if its unbearable at top speed. Thats why truly fast bikes got fairings and are all shaped for less wind resistance. U want triple digit speeds u dont want a stripped down cruiser. U want a comftorable simple cool looking drive anywhere bike the sportster or softtail fill that purpose.

    So I’ve been thinking about trading in my iron 883 for a 1200, probably the iron, for the extra displacement and power, but wasn’t sure it would really be worth the trouble? I’ve put a stage 1 from DK Customs on my 883 and it honestly has completely changed that bike! Very noticeable performance boost! I figured I could transfer all that over to an iron 1200 and have all the bike I would ever need. Just not sure I want to part with my 883, it’s so cool. I have to have a sportster though! A real, true, air cooled, pushrod, agricultural, piece of Americana! I love the feel and rumble of my sportster!

    I have a 2002 Sportster 883R, upgraded to the 1200 and I can say that the difference is noticeable. But, it's not going to be like the difference between an 883 and a M8 or even big twin Dyna. If you love the Sportster, though, I'd say take one out and see what you think. I enjoyed riding the Iron 1200, but even as a Harley guy, I was more impressed with the Indian Scout Bobber, performance wise. ✌🏽

    @@thatoneguymoto Thanks! I just can’t justify the price jump up to the M8 or a big twin. They are so much more expensive! There’s a 2021 iron 1200 with 700 miles on it for 11k at the dealership and I can definitely swing that. I already have a stage 1 ready and waiting if I get it.

    yeah its a good step up. But...mod the bike's suspension, controls contact points and you'll handle anything you want. Bore out a few 2-300 CCs and you got a bike that will blow the gaskets out of any 114 M8. And dont think of it as "forking out accessories". Sportsters are for customization, Softails are for accessories.

    I just had someone ask me that the other day, and I told them yes. I've seen and heard of guys taller than you riding Sportsters so the fit will be up how it feels, to you. As far as never riding before, the power is very manageable, so I think if feels like a physically good fit, you could enjoy this as a first bike. Of course, you'll want to test ride it to be sure. Good luck!👍🏽

    I think it depends on how confident you are as a new rider. There are definitely lighter bikes with less power that you could start with, but if you feel good about your skills as a beginner, then I think you could definitely start here. If not here, definitely an 883 Sportster. Good luck, and ride safe! 🤓👍🏽
