Nice and fair review, thanks for that, Thomas and the rest of the Autogefühl crew. It was nice to watch. Only comment from me that it shines through, that you are a little skeptical to the Explorer PHEV from the start on, compared to your other car reviews. However, my first impression was a little different I think. We just got our Explorer PHEV before summer holidays her, and so long we are amazed by its qualities. It’s fantastic car for family long hauling. So spacious, very quite and extremely comfortable on long trips. Just the sheer amount of space brings traveling with 2 adults, 3 kids and a dog to a whole new experience for us here in Europe. And it’s so fuel efficient too. It managed to do over 660 km pure electrical on a 1400 km trip, with only two chargings at the start of the trip (driven on 3 days). Well done Ford. If you consider that an equivalent German premium car similar equipment would cost you about 50K EUR more, this is really a bargain. And you get a bigger, more powerful, quieter and more fuel efficient car too 😃 Greetings from Norway

@@lundh821 My average consumption is 4.1 L/100km for all 15000 driven km until now. I consider this quite good for a car of this size. Both daily short rides and longer weekends trips. And we just finished a very cold 5 month winter with down to -20* Celsius daytime temperatures. Regarding cold temperatures the car managed to go pure electric, without the motor engaging, even in -17 when the battery is warm. So it works best with just finishing charging right before departure. In opposite to some other PHEV the Explorer don’t need the petrol Engine to heat the cabin, even in very cold weather. Still very satisfied with our Explorer, spacious, safe and confident riding feeling on snowy and icy roads and a very well working PHEV system. Could only wish for a little bigger battery. I guess the Explorer would be a quiet good pure electric car too, if Ford would go all the way in for it.

660km pure electric on 3 days? Given 50km electric range (10 more than the official claim), means you had to charge the car 13 times in 3 days. That's impossible, since the Explorer takes a minimum of 3,3 hours to charge it's battery. With standard charging at home it takes up to 6 hours! Now let's do some math for the best-case-scenario: 13x3=39. To do 660km on pure electric-drive you had to charge the car for more than 3 days. So there is absolutely no time left to actually drive the car...

@@BFD15i You are mistaken in the beginning of your thoughts about it. You forgot the fact that even if you don’t charge the battery and it’s empty, this car is still a HEV car. That means the Explorer will constantly shift between driving with the petrol engine alone, combined with the e-motor, e-motor alone and charging the battery, in the background. When you drive in Norway you constantly shift between uphill and downhill. Downhill you get quite good regeneration because of the car’s weight. The petrol engine will shut down too. And you even get enough power to do pure electric driving on flat areas, or in towns with low speed limits. All the major roads in mid- and north Norway goes straight through towns. So this kind of road profile makes it work well for HEV vehicles. So whenever you drive the Explorer, it will show you how many km you have driven with the petrol engine and how many km you have driven pure electric. As well the total consumption of your trip. You are absolutely right about it, that I didn’t charge for 600 electric km, that wouldn’t work, as you pointed out. It makes no sense economically too, whenever you have to pay for electricity it charges way to slow on trips. So I only charged twice, on the first day before departure and overnight to the third day. Those charges only last about 30-55 km, depending on various factors, but after that it’s a constant shifting between electric and petrol engine driving.

@@christiane.1305 Thanks for your answer. I still find it very hard to believe that you recuperated around 500km while driving. Especially with that small battery-pack of the Explorer. If that really was the case, hybrid-engines are massively underrated!

Somehow Thomas stays positive, informative and explains what other auto vid hosts miss. Take the active/passive sound insulation--good to know and something the magazines wouldn't mention.

Well, it doesn't really have that "premium-competition". The Explorer is fully loaded for that 76.000€. A similar specced X5 45e, Q7 55TFSIe or Touareg e-Hybrid easily costs 20-30.000€ more than this Ford. And all of those offer less power. The Explorer is a bargain!

Is this Ford Explorer having the powertrain both EV part and ICE part the same as Lincoln Aviator PHEV sold in USA?

The EV-part is the same, but the lincoln has the ST-Mapping with 405hp ICE and about 500hp combined, while the Explorer PHEV has the platinum-mapping with 360hp ICE and 450hp combined.

Who buys car magazines these days? Not me

I find this car quite unique în the European landscape. It is not Premium, still it is big and has very powerful engine, and ECO too, for the money. To me - married, 2 children, several animals like dog, cats...- it makes a lot of sense. I know somebody who actually paid the equivalent of 2 of these to buy a X5 M50d...similar equiped. Now, except for the badge and, let's say, handling, în what way is his car better than this one? Is it worth double the price?

The rooting of the harness is scary.

It’s a shame ford didn’t carry over the us seat options and interiors to Europe, I’m sick of European car models being only available with black interiors , bring back the lighter interior options to all European models ford , Nissan, Opel/psa

This is a review with personal points of view. A GLE or X5 with similar Power and options are 40000 euros more. Át least. Please spare us about german cars. Very unreliable these days, and prices up to heaven. Mercedes has 2-3 years guaranty... Full of them în service... And look át a GLE leather inside after 1 year.... Patetic I do nőt own or like ford vehicles, but your review, îs like you are working for Audi. A company bought a fleet of VW Golfs 1 year ago.... Every month át least öné is în service with hilirious problems.....so...german what? I Tell you... Initial good feelings, but very poor reliability

Thomas got it wrong. It's 76.000€ in Germany for the ST-Line. Platinum is 77.000€.

Police car in USA 🤣🤣 If you want American Luxury go with Lincoln or Cadillac. Good job Thomas 👍

That is incorrect info. Police buys a lot of Explorers. That is true. But, you can see Explorers in just about every parking lots in typical work places & they are everywhere on the road. (Most people don't realized this new Explorer model is heavily constructed with aluminum in its under body. This make the new Explorer much lighter than the older model). I will stay away from Cadillac now. It just have too many issues & internal design is old school compare to Lincoln. But public impression is Lincoln are for old people! The newly redesigned 2020 Ford Explorer also have a lot of problems, so much so that COO Joe Hinrichs was forced to retired early this year (rumor has it Joes' "forced retirement" was partly due to this new Explorer release problems). But European are fortunate. This plug-in Explorer Thomas reviewing is not available in North America. The reason is a plug-in Explorer will cannibalize the sales of plug-in Lincoln Aviator. As a result, only a mild hybrid, aka non-plug-in hybrid (in Sport trim only) is available in Explorer in North America (OK. at least in US. Not 100% sure what I said is true for our Canadian neighbors). However, the fuel efficiency of the mild hybrid Explorer is depressing.

So conclusion is to buy 50ke more expensive smaller German car that uses more fuel unless paying even 30k more to get hybrid.

apart from F series, first time that i like a Ford SUV/truck... but, dull interior continues.

Many details have poor quality in that car. Rear camera looks as purchased from alibaba, the brake calipers and discs looks poor as in Dacia cars. No led bulbs in rear lamps and plate lighting. Plastic is very chip, the warning signals are noisy and annoying. Lighting inside is very poor, no lighting under seats in the 2nd and 3rd row. This orange tape under engine cover (without hydraulic holder) is just complete misunderstanding.

Great car in the USA, but in Europe? Not so much.

I do not like it. Strange to have a 3,0 V6 engine in a PHEV car. And the quality is just not good enough. It should stay in the US...
