    Old video, not sure if you’ll check the comments. Just wondering what your thoughts are on the fact that there’s a 2500 High Country towing a triple axle toy hauler in the stock footage. The lightest Fuzion has 3,000 lbs of pin weight dry. That puts that truck at max payload before the driver even steps in.

    I think the thing that I find the MOST interesting is the fact that with all the things they upgraded in the drivetrain, they stated that the full power of the engine can be put to the ground in first gear. They don't have to de-tune it until higher speeds/gears. I think this will make a bigger difference than people think.

    Chevy states, on every new truck, they include a sticker giving all the towing ratings for that particular truck with its unique configuration. That’s great once you buy the truck. Why can’t they calculate those same numbers when you are using the “build and price” on line feature once you have done the configuration? If you find your specific configuration can’t do what you want you can change it BEFORE you buy the truck rather than find out when you pick it up that it isn’t what you want.

  • @johnwild757

    @johnwild757

    The actual numbers posted on the sticker are negligible compared to the website numbers. The difference is actual weight the truck gets after it is manufactured.

    JD again great research and info. Somehow I missed this video, although I have been subscribed. It has been 2yrs since you posted but I JUST NOW found it. Ironically this is the same timing when Im actually researching and looking for these specific stats. I have commented several times over the years, but here is my 1st question/scenario for you to help me... I am comparing these tow stats in order to tow a Grand Design 31MB 5th wheel (1,834 hitch weight 12000 GVWR 36ft ) and trying to decide purchase between 2500HD or 3500HD. The 3500HD has better suspension and robust , but the 2500HD suspension offers softer ride for my daily commute and comfort. I do travel full time and usually stay long term (3-6months)...then relocate 2 or 3 States away 1000 miles (another 3-6 months). I travel ALL States and relocate 3-4 times a year. I'm looking for your advise and experience between a) comfortable & smooth daily driving and b) strong suspension when I continue to relocate and tow 5th wheel 1000 miles each few months (sometimes driving Mountains of Northwest, snow in the Northeast or MidWest States, and sometimes SouthEast States). The 3500HD is great...but im concerned about the stiffer suspension as my daily driver (while 5th wheel is detached). Since I drive 200-300 miles daily (just the truck) mostly on open highway and then some off-road trails. The rig stays at RV park 3-6months, until it's time for me to relocate. I remember one of your other videos explaining to also consider the payload, gross weight & capacities, etc...not just the tow rating...and I fully agree. Do you have any thoughts...advise...recommendations between these 3500HD vs 2500HD ??

    Forget the Chevy 2020 2500HD gas version!, they dropped 4.10 gear option which has been around since the beginning of time. 2019 and earlier versions offered 4.10 rear gear ratios. Here is the difference in performance in max trailer weights for 2019 and older crew cab short bed models with 4.10 was 14200#, and 3.73 were 9700#. It would have been ok if they changed the transmission ratios but they didnt on the gas version! From 14200# to 9700# is a huge difference, saying you make up for it by increasing the engine torque wont make up for it on the hills. You need the extra gear ratio on the hills because the RPMs will drop too much when it shifts. Also the 3.73 will put more stress on the clutches that engage when the transmission shifts. I love my 2012 2500HD with gas, but the gears on the hills are barely acceptable and I cant afford to make them worse. Time to go to Ford that offers 4.30 gear ratios!

    I just purchased a 2016 40.5 foot momentum 376TH 5th wheel.( GVWR 19,500) We may take it out a few times a year. Im looking at purchasing a new truck to tow with. I'd like to stay away from a dually. The 3500 SRW Crew Cab Sierra Denali 6.6 Diesel is on the top of our list. What are your thoughts on this truck for our new 5th wheel considering the volume of use?

    Did GM change anything about the 2020 2500HD/3500HD Gooseneck/5th Wheel OEM setup? I've been told by several manufactures that they do not have an OEM 5th wheel puck mounted hitch due to GM changing things. Hard to believe that GM would do that given the "Industry Standard" previously used by GM and still used by Ford and Dodge.

    Hi I do enjoy most of your videos, they are good. But why is it it that you all focus on the biggest weight categories only. I don't know the %s of users that want a dually verses no dually. So I have an idea for you as a niche. What are the biggest weights for a srw in all the brands 2st in diesel then in gas with a crew cab? Isn't that the biggest market that people will care about? Do a good job on that guess what'll happen to your market share.

    There probably just going to put the biggest numbers out there to get there fanboys excited, and overrate all those numbers like they always do, so they can have the biggest numbers on paper out of everyone else, but at the end of the day, everyone knows its about how capable and powerful the trucks are in the real world, and not on paper. That being said though, no matter what truck you buy for yourself, you can definitely be confident that you got a truck that can easily get the job done. Especially now that they are probably rated over 35,000lbs. Pretty much the same weight lots of semi trucks haul.

    I think a more important observation is does someone really need to be towing almost 40,000 pounds with a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck? There are people who come to videos like this or experience that can tow that much weight properly and SAFELY. But the average person would say if it can do almost 40,000 why not another 10% or 20%. I see more dangers of towing that much with that little of a truck. Anyway who knows? I'm a mechanical engineer so it's not my field.

    Alex, as an engineer, don't you trust that SAE has developed the J2807 testing standard with sufficient safety in mind for those who are licensed to tow those weights? Assuming the manufacturers are all following that standard now (which is my understanding), that is what gives me confidence that the trucks can safely tow those weights.

    Keep in mind. While GM and ford are releasing their 2020 tow figures now, Ram is just now releasing their 2019 figures. So at the current moment GM is ahead with 35.5k tow rating, you can bet Ram will trump this with their 2020 release. So for the 2019 models, Ram is ahead.

    And we all know Ford will surpass Chevy's claims when they come out with their final numbers - big deal. And, Ford will use a 10 speed transmission, etc., etc. So, Chevy will be the king for a week...then Ram will come out with a 10 speed with more towing, Chevy will attempt something to keep up, Ford will best all of them...rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat...etc. At some point, you just need to buy a Class 8 tractor and be done with it.

    Buckhorn, your a bonehead. Having owned and currently owning several GM, Ford and Dodge (Ram) light duty trucks 1500 (150), 2500 (250) and 3500 (350). I can tell you they all have their advantages and disadvantages. Ram is pure power and grunt, falls short with tranny, technology and comfort features, but awesome truck. GM is power and reliable to it's own fault. The comfort and reliability is unmatched. Ford is stylish and comfortable, but the main thing you can rely on is paying several repair bills, the 5.9 was the last great engine and you don't know what will fail first, but know that the Tranny, A/C and electric technology will fail you, not to mention the 6.7.

    The best thing on the new Chevy is the 10 speed transmission. The new 6.7 Cummins is going to be a beast!! Stronger Rods, block and a bigger turbo!! 400 hp and1000tq and you know they didn't design that engine without room for it to be increased. Going to interesting to see towing comparisons of the two.
