My daughter just purchased the Autobahn model in white with a 6 speed manual. Fully loaded. Digital dash, sunroof, great sound system, leather, heated and ventilated seats. Great acceleration and the 6 speed is silky smooth. VW has done a great job on the 2019 GLI.

@@timgridley1299 I was not sure what to expect. However, it sound really good. Certainly not a step down from the Fender system that was in the last GLI. My suggestion to anyone is to go look at the vehicle, check out all the new features, then take it for a test drive. I've been in other GLI's. The 2019 model is SUPERIOR to any of them across the board. The Autobahn was not cheap, but it is truly a sports sedan. Accelerates great, handles great, brakes are top notch and a comfortable vehicle.

Just bought a 2019 Jetta r line, comes with a 6 year warranty, we also purchased the term protection which covers wear and tear, ex. Brakes, battery, headlights, belts n hoses. Do you think something like this is worth it? Can I replace battery myself and take it somewhere to have brakes replaced? Not familiar with German car maintenance.

@@rudygonzales3589 Good luck with your new Jetta. Since you purchased the protection package from VW, I would only take it the dealership if anything needs to be done. Granted, the dealerships are EXPENSIVE, but you have a protection package and your financial liability should be minimal if any. German cars, (VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc....) can be tricky which is why I am recommending the dealership for repairs. Best of luck.

The GLI is a fantastic sporty sedan but frankly the SEL premium is a better buy. SEL premium is EPA rated at 40 hwy but real life is 44mpg on 87 octane. Also, if you learn to drive it as a "manual" and use the gear selector as you wish, you notice there's very little trade off to an actual manual. When you do the math you realize you have money for a fun sports car on the side to fill the need, or a motorcycle, or a Vespa. Love the GLI but you will pay a sheet ton more in unwanted/unforeseen costs.

I've owned many VWs since the 1980s (Sciroccos, Rabbits, Jettas and GTIs) and currently own a 2003 Jetta Wolfsburg (modified) and a 2018 GTI (stock) - - In 2018, I highly considered the GLI, but the plaid seats and dark, metallic blue paint color (new in 2018) sealed the deal for me with the GTI ... its a great daily driver.

I owned a 2017 GTI with plaid seats and loved those seats! Just bought the U.S. version 2019 white 35th edition GLI (with DSG) for my wife. She really likes the dark cloth seats it comes with (and so do I). She said she wouldn't have wanted her GLI if it had plaid seats. I think I agree with her on that. The plaid just goes with the GTI...not so much with the GLI. The GLI doesn't have to be an exact copy of the GTI. Having a unique look for the GLI is a good thing (in our opinion). My wife LOVES her new GLI! It handles great and looks great...and has plenty of pep.

Very nice review! Regarding your question on "Don't let them see you coming", I would say that I love that. I drive a GTI most of the times and enjoy leaving others left behind in disbelief. I also drive an Audi and those four rings give away the available power and handling capability and so I don't have the element of surprise on my side with that car.

We pick our GLI manual 35 Edition with all the Autobahn goodies next Thursday and am looking forward to it even if it is my wife's car. I have driven it and it feels a bit bigger, the seats are longer on the bottom which is nice. Lots of adjustments and power lumbar which I welcome. Nice road test, thanks. C and D should have their test up soon, they were a little slower to the mark as they wanted to do more instrument testing, so look forward to their numbers.

I had a 400whp 2012 6MT GTI for 5 years and I've gotta say, after purchasing the 2019 GLI S, I wondered why I even went with the 6MT to begin with. The DQ380 DSG transmission in these things are amazing. They do have their quicks though; mainly caused by stock software issues. If you have the willingness to upgrade your DSG software, do it. It makes the car feel so much better while spirited driving or even just cruising through town. I'd recommend TVS stage 2+ for DSG software.

PS. The new VW GTI is actually smaller in the vertical dimension than the MK6. They gave the vehicle more width which is of course beneficial when it comes to handling. But the roof on my MK7 is much much closer to my head than the roof on my MK6 was. I used to be able to pull right up to the line at a stop light and see the light, now I can't which is kind of annoying since it's a hard habit to break. I checked the dimensions to be sure and the MK7 is shorter, it weights about 100lbs less with fluids and everything in it, yet it has a extra 2 inches in its wheelbase, and we'll the exterior body width is actually only .5inches more than the MK6. So are they shrinking? No, but are they drastically increasing in size? That's a no too. For this I'm glad because the GTI especially strikes a balance between practical and sport oriented that is really hard to break away from once you get accustomed to it.

I had a 2013 GTI (S I think) with the plaid seats, and now have a 2015 GLI SEL with the (fake) leather. Plaid seats are better to LOOK at, the leather ones are better to SIT on. So since I can't see the seats while I'm in them but I sure can feel 'em - leather all day. Also, the design of the leather seats on the new GLI is better than the previous one - they are beautiful. The Autobahn trim on this car is perfect and I wouldn't ask for anything else (or take anything less) in a Jetta GLI. Bravo to VW for including the digital cockpit - that may have sold the car for me. Getting about time to trade in the 15, the new GLI is a very strong contender. Now the question: is ~60hp and AWD worth the ~15k price difference between it and the Golf R? That's gonna be a tough decision.

When I bought my 2016 GTI 6 speed, I got an Autobahn to avoid the plaid though I prefer cloth to leather. Thankfully, VW, though they used the Golf R brakes and the GTI suspension on the new GLI, gave the 35th Anniversary Edition its own distinctive cloth seats. I bought a pure gray one and was quite pleased VW did not co-op the GTI plaid. If I want plaid, I'll buy a Scottish kilt. Never understood the desire for plaid seats in GTIs. Thumbs up to VW for the decision to keep plaid out of the GLI.

Just wait till the MK8 GTI comes out in a year or two, then the honeymoon will be over and everybody will start to bemoan the GLI as the underperforming sibling. The GLI has been behind the GTI in platform sharing since 2015, and at around 200 lbs heavier than a comparably equipped GTI, it has a bit of a weight problem. The Mk6 versions of these two cars were more closely matched in terms of power to weight ratio. But the addition of a true LSD and variable valve lift is certainly a a welcome improvement over the outgoing generation. My wife has a 17' GLI so I'm not hating on the new ones. It's a great car as is, and we got it brand new as a year end clearance model for 6k off MSRP, so it was a steel. But I'd wait a few years before pulling the trigger on a current generation model, just to allow VW to work out the electromechanical "kinks" that are common to redesigns..

The Clark plaid should absolutely be available in the GLI, and IMO should be the default material in all trim levels of both the GLI... AND... the GTI. I will always choose the plaid over leather, to the point that I will end up buying a lesser GTI model to be able to get the plaid seats. And add to that, buying the GLI is much lower on my purchase list because I cannot get the plaid seats. Honestly, if the GLI had plaid cloth, at this point in my life I would choose the GLI over the GTI... just not without plaid. Add to this. I want the plaid in the Golf R.

We had an 77 VW Rabbit when I was in college (around 82) that had blue plaid seats much like my 83 GTI. So plaid was never exclusive to the GTI. I believe I recall some Siroccos having plaid seats as well. I don’t remember if early Jettas ever had them but certainly the precedent for plaid in other models exists.

Bought this in the 35th Anniversary Edition in pure gray at $2300 off sticker with no factory money available. Preferred the new 7 speed DSG to the manual - a first for me. As said in the review, these are not the short, precise throws of a Mazda Miata. Shifter needs to sit lower. A short throw shifter is a must for me to prefer this to the new DSG. I would only buy it in the 35th Anniversary Edition because of the adaptive suspension not available on the S and the Autobahn. I actually prefer the cloth seats, analog instrument panel, and surely don't miss a sunroof. The wheel styling is light years better than the wheel on the Autobahn trim. My only quibble is where are the fog lights ? ? ? Will we see them on the 2020 model ? Unlike the reviewer, I am so pleased there are no plaid cloth seats. I bought my 2016 GTI manual in the Autobahn trim and one reason I did was to escape the plaid seats. And, though the shift is better than the GLI, I still put an APR short throw shifter with a different shift knob in my GTI. I intend to do an APR Plus tune on the GLI which will take it up around 300 hp and, with the Plus tune, offer me a third party powertrain warranty. Besides that mod, the only thing I've done to the GLI was remove the O.E.M. Hankook Grand Touring A/S tires and replace them with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 +. ultra-high performance tires. Had a 2017 MK 6 GLI DSG - one I bought at almost 8 grand off sticker with no miles after the 2018 GLI was introduced - and one test drive in the new 2019 made me instantly decide to trade. The new MK 7 was that much of an improvement over the MK 6. With the MK 7 VW has truly approached its goal of transforming the GLI into a true sports sedan - a GTI with a trunk.

  • @stephenhendricks103
    @stephenhendricks1035 жыл бұрын

First things first. Plaid seats are for the GTI. Period. No debate; it's an issue of heritage. Now, as a GTI owner I'm happy to see that the GLI hasn't been neutered in the critical areas of the engine and drive train. For those who want/need a sedan with more back seat room and less of a want/need for cargo space and versatility it's a great choice. Unfortunately, there are some flies in the ointment... Inexplicably (other than for cost cutting reasons) the GLI has no rear seat HVAC vents, much less separate controls. For a vehicle whose primary advantage over the GTI is rear seat accommodations, that's ridiculous. It may seem a small issue to some but my big dog whose second home is the back seat of my GTI says it's a dealbreaker. Second, in an unsurprising boneheaded move the US spec 35th Anniversary edition provides adaptive chassis control (i.e. dampers) while the top trim Autobahn does not. That would be absurd enough but in Canada the "35th Anniversary Edition" is an option package rather than a trim level that can be added to any trim level. Why? Does VW Canada have compromising photos of German VW executives? Considering this isn't the first example of Canadian buyers getting a greater range of choices in VW vehicles compared to folks south of the border, that might be the explanation. More likely, I suspect, is that the supply of suspension components for the GLI is currently limited. I'm guessing that VW managed to find enough to supply the limited edition "35" GLI in the US along with any trim level in the much smaller Canadian market. Once the "35" edition is sold out in the US, I'd expect to see adaptive dampers appear at least in the Autobahn trim level. Until then you can choose between the eye candy of a digital cockpit and adaptive dampers in the US.

@OspreyBravo18 “Oh get out of here dude, so what they fudged the numbers on the diesel vehicles.” You need to grow up kiddo. Are you sure that it was the only thing they did or do? Many customers even out of the US was complaining that their DSG transmission were nreaking down right after the warranty expired. Did you hear any of them? “Do you know how many trucks roll coal around here because they mucked with their exhaust?” Who cares about the exhaust fumes, the act of rigging the ECU’s is unethical. Do you reward the thieves who steal cigarettes from the grocery stores because they are not robbing banks? What kind of distorted reasoning is this? “Every single one that has a diesel engine. Maybe every once and a while a stealthy unmodified diesel truck will whistle on by, but most people like them loud and belching smoke.” I like them that way too. “Comparatively the VW's were harmless.” But the mentality that rigs the ECU’s of the cars is not. “But, "there's more of them and it's a multiplicative effect on the environment" are we really going to get into that?” Nope, since your perception of this issue is distorted your presumed counter arguments are not valid. It is not a matter of environment, it is a matter of ETHICS. “If car people cared about the environment that much we wouldn't have the desire for fast cars that are less efficient, and we would be drooling over the Prius.” Prius is an engineering masterpiece … you feel the need to mention it because it forces you to admit its existence in the car market. However, as I mentioned above, your perception is utterly distorted about the issue. “The only other thing I know VW fudges is their power numbers, and my insurance thanks them for that.” Ha! LOL! That’s right, as long as you benefit from it, it doesn’t matter what kind of crooked scheme is there behind it … It figures!!! “Sincerely” With such ethics, you can’t even believe in to yourself if you said this in front of a mirror, LOL! “Someone who used to not like VW's.” Once you were ethical ???
