I'm strugglin'. I'm near the end of my return window on the new Dell XPS 13 9300, which is an awesome little Windows machine. But now that they've released the new Air, maybe I need to have a mac in the house again. I ordered the i5/8GB RAM model because it was the config that was available and able to be shipped immediately. Looking forward to testing it out. If I decided to go with the Mac, I'll probably end up returning it and getting an i5 with 16GB RAM.

The audio recording quality certainly sounds vastly improved with this years model, and to me, the speakers seem to sound less "spacious" and a little more refined in the delivery of sound.

The highs and mids are way more clear on the 2019. 2020 sounds muddy - not from bass.

I have the 2019 MBA for small business use, and I don’t consider changing it for the new one. It’s been awesome so far, guess the new features of the MBA 2020 are more functional for people who use this computer for designs and that stuff.

For future buyers of Macbook Air 2020, this channel is the only channel that did a comprehensive review of Macbook Air. Other youtubers always "stuck" at reading specs and doing "video test". Since 2018 version, the Macbook Air series seems to have heat problem due to fan that isn't connected to the sink. Appreciate you mentioned about this in your video. This is the trouble I'm having with my previous Macbook Air 2019. Just opening a simple photo editing app and do very2 light editing and sometimes watching 1440p videos, the Air getting hot like crazy and producing loud fan noise. It was unacceptable. And the new model doesn't improve in this aspect which is such a shame because at the same time Apple gave us other things that we requested such as quad core cpu, ddr4 Ram and bigger storage. Wasted opportunity. The Macbook 2020 might be the first true "macbook for all" if those heat and fan problems solved.

This review helped a lot in deciding. I honestly went with the refurb 2019 air i5 256gb for only $820 via Apple. This is my first MacBook and I didn’t want to spend a lot just incase I didn’t love it and due to the pandemic I was also on a budget! I can always upgrade later if I need too!

Justin M. I’m a college student as well and I bought the 2019 version in August. Depending on what you need the computer for, the Air works perfectly fine for school assignments, like wiring papers, research, and i guess right now, using zoom 🤷🏼‍♀️ but if you’re programming and editing videos a lot and doing a lot more heavy duty things like that, the pro may work better. The air is capable of a lot, but it will work it hard and heat it up. So it’s a judgement call at that point.

I Liked your video very much! Last January I bought a Macbook Air (2017) which is working pretty well. I was confused with the existing line-up then. Because in order to have a Mac with a reliable keyboard, I had to choose the old model (Macbook Air 2017) or the brand new Macbook Pro 16 inch. I’m a student so I didn’t want to spend to much on my first Mac. Finally Apple brought us the Macbook Air with a normal keyboard again, so that people don’t have to think about this anymore! Could you maybe make a comparison between the keyboards of the Macbook Air 2017 and the one of the 2020 model?

There's a teeny bit of improvement in the camera quality and it's almost unnoticeable. The microphone however did noticeably improve. 😅

I actually have the 2020 and 2018. I have the 2020 while someone else in the house has the 2018. I actually compared the sound by changing the volume while holding shift to play some sounds and it actually sounded significantly the same for me.

Its because laptop webcams are connected via a internal USB header. While smartphone selfie cams are connected directly to the CPU itself Wait for ARM Macbooks, thats when the webcam will get iPhone-Like-Quality

The microphone quality of the 2020 MacBook Air is perceptibly less muffled than the 2019 model. The speakers sound identical to me.

Got the 2019 model back in December - really frustrating that they release a new model 100 cheaper with way more storage.

Pollux Chung I have a 2014 macbook air and I use archicad and make renders almost every day.. I regretted for not buying the pro 😓 even though I had no issues with it so far Just the fact that I know it has only one fan it kills me 😩 and it gets to hot when I make renders

Pollux Chung But the real issue here is even without heavy duty tasks, the Air easily get hot and producing loud fan noise. I spoke based on experience of owning the 2019 model which has the same exact build, ventilation system. Only watching a 1440p videos around 7 minutes the Air getting hot like crazy and produced loud, annoying fan noise. Mind you, I never installed Final Cut or Photoshop on my previous Air but the performance, especially the cooling system and fan noise are really unacceptable. And the fact Apple continue giving us the same cooling system with the same unconnected fan really bothers me. Glad I sold my Macbook Air 2019.

2019 speaker is louder and has a clearer high, but the 2020 has more bass, albeit a little muddy in the low-mids imo

Alex Crowell the current rumors put it at a May or June release. This makes sense because Apple seems to be really pushing its iPad Pro line now, they probably wouldn’t want a MBP to take the attention away from the iPad Pro anytime soon. Here’s hoping I’m wrong and that there’s a new one coming really soon!

Great video! Why don't you recommend the i7 for Macbook Air 2020? Can you do a geekbench between the i7 and the i5 Macbook air?

I feel the speakers were sounding lower because they were farther away from the mic. A good mic should be sensitive enough for the difference in distance to matter.

Keep on mind this is recorded through a small lav mic (not our usual setup due to me working from home during this time). The 2019 is definitely louder, usually 1-2db but to me in person the 2020 has more bass.

Hey Max, thanks for the review. I have been thinking about buying macbook air for traveling and editing videos and photos on the road. Could you please comment or make a short video on the editing experience in FCPX, especially the 4k 10bit h265 footage out of eg.fuji xh4 /since the cpu has 10bit h265 encode-decode capacity/. Is the playback and editing smooth? How about exporting? What is your experience and opinion? Many thanks.

Listening on my iPad Pro with my AirPods Pro and I can definitely tell that the microphone and sound quality sounds a lot better on the new MacBook Air.

Since these are Y cpus, I think the fan is more likely useful to cool the thunderbolt ports rather than the cpu itself.

i know about the thermal throttle, but i‘m curiouś if the i7 can outperform the i5 on any occasion. will not decide before i‘ve seen at least two comparisons. nonetheless i am going to replace my 2012 11“ macbook air with this years model for sure! i‘m proud about me beeing able to wait so long, cause it was worth it. keep up the good work. your reviews are by far the best out there!

I'm not interested in bass and I'm almost never using the stock speakers for music so for the sound test, I would have to say it sounded better on the older model, just because it seemed to cover the range of sound I prefer (higher end.) But again, this is completely subjective. This is the first MacBook I've actually considered purchasing in a long time. (Still using my 13-inch MacBook Pro 2012.) Can you compare these? I stopped upgrading my laptop when they keyboards started to fail.

Wondering the result using ext gpu with mba 2020 🤔 could it be super slim and light for outdoor use and (relative) powerful to use at home 🤓
