    Not explosive? Mate, try to get into the mind of someone who doesn't drive Porsches and other sportscars for their job. Try to think like someone who drives 1 car every 4 or 5 year and who is used to normal cars like VW Golf, Polo, Clio, Megane, Focus, etc. etc. I understand that if you drive multiple really fast cars every week or month, the Polo GTI doesn't feel insanely fast. But if you don't drive all those cars, and suddenly own a Polo GTI, believe me, it will feel VERY explosive.

    So the Polo GTi is basically a Golf GTi from 10-15 years ago. 197 horsepower and just over 235 lbs ft of torque it actually has better specs than the Golf GTi had until just recently. A 2010 Golf GTi was rated at 210 horsepower but only 207 lbs ft of torque and the 2010 Golf GTi and the new Polo GTi both weigh in right around 3,000 lbs or 1,360 kg which you would think would give them very similar performance. Given the Polo’s smaller size it might prove to be a better performer and choice.

    What kind of explosive acceleration do you expect from a 200 PS , 320 nm car? Not all people have the luxury to drive a expensive sportscar like a lambo or BMW M/ Audi RS. Go get yourself a Porsche... I own this car, and its truely amazing for its weight and size.. a true pocket rocket. Depending on your driving style, the Polo GTI can be economical and very fast at the same time, thanks to the driving mode selection..

    This is *not* the Mk 7/7.5 Golf GTI engine detuned. That is a common misconception repeated by reviewers who haven’t done their research. This engine has a different compression ratio, internals, and smaller turbo. It is actually the same engine as both the 132TSI Tiguan and the yet-to-arrive 2.0L T-roc. People buying this thinking they are getting a detuned Golf GTI engine (which they may intend to uptune to the same spec as a Golf GTI later) are getting misled and will be sorely disappointed.

    MyRealName Yes however the potential gains on the Polo GTI aren’t that amazing given its higher compression ratio and smaller turbo. To get even close to a Golf GTI you start needing expensive mods like a new turbo, and by that stage you could probably just buy a Golf GTI for the same money.

    R Soul This is supposed to be a hot hatch. This isn’t for someone looking at buying basic run-of-the-mill fleet cars. Anyone buying this will want to know what the engine actually is capable of, so maybe sit back down and let the adults talk?

    I always amazes me that testers criticise the gearbox for changing up too soon. All you have to do is to put the shift lever into manual and you can hold any gear until the rev limiter changes up at 7000 rpm, either using the lever or paddles. Same control as afforded by a manual gearbox.

  • @juusohamalainen7507

    Exactly as you wrote. When driving fast on narrow roads you should never rely on automatic transmission. Same applies to icy roads. You change gears manually then to know how the car will behave.

  • @harrisonsloan6036

    @harrisonsloan6036

    5 жыл бұрын

    Juuso Hämäläinen the automatic mode is pretty well engineered it changes gears pretty spot on, and in spot it revs for longer and when you are flooring it. It changes gears “earlier” for fuel economy. But yes the dsg basically behaves is a manual in manual mode, except it may change gears if you are way to high a gear when slowing down and go up gears if you exceed the rev limiter

  • @juusohamalainen7507

    @@harrisonsloan6036 I understand what you wrote. But I have had DSG equipped cars and normal automatocs. Currently I have among others new Golf Variant 1.5 TSI and new Polo GTI. I do not recommend ever driving fast on curvy or icy roads using DSG in automatic mode. You cannot handle your car if the car starts sliding. Any automatic transmission is too slow to react at the exactly right time. It will kill you one day. Any automatic transmission typically changes gear at the wrong moment and causes the car loose its traction and power hence making the driver loose control. When fast and correct reactions are a must the driver must directly control gas, gear and brakes. When driving turns demanding always use only manual mode. I have driven cars in difficult conditions for the past 50 years. My father drove cars from 1932 to 2016 and gave the exactly same advice. He had never an accident on the road.

    Or in to sport mode. It’s amazing how few reviewers know the box has a sport mode and this looks like another one. All you do is pull the gear lever back once while in drive and it totally transforms it. It changes quicker, holds in gear much longer and aggressively down shifts when breaking. It a fantastic box.

    What is the point of the paddles if the transmission shifts when it wants to anyhow? If I don't have a clutch pedal I want paddles that are a command switch and not an ask switch.
