2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE - TRAIL MODE TEST - Diagonal Slip Test - Burning Rubber

Here's my 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE. I wanted to show what TRAIL MODE actually works. At first, I thought it was a gimmick as it didn't seem to do anything. I never used it. I knew that if I got one front and one rear wheel off the ground, I would be stuck.
After I got better wheels and tires I decided to push the RAV4 a little further. I tried trail mode again and was pleasantly surprised. It went from absolutely stuck in normal mode to unstuck in trail mode. I was so happy to find more capability with a press of a button.
Of course I wondered why can't the traction control system just STOP the wheel spin like every other 4x4 out there. After all, pretty much every other vehicle with traction control does this. My theory is that it comes down to the transmission in the RAV4 Hybrid. Or, lack there of. The electric and gas motors are basically direct drive. They are connected directly to the wheels with gears. There's no buffer like you get with a regular automatic transmission. So, pulsing the brakes to stop wheel spin could more easily damage the drive system.
I believe Toyota decided to use "flywheel" energy in this case. You can see that the free wheels still spin quite a bit in trail mode. The free wheel builds up energy while spinning, then the brakes are applied to send the power to the other wheel. This would produce less shock to the drive system. Also makes me glad I got heavier wheels!
I tested all modes. Normal, sport, eco and VSC off. Only Trail mode was able to get the vehicle moving. I'm holding my breath for locking differentials. :)

    Nice setup bro. I have the same wheel size setup on my XLE, but boxers and wildpeaks. Im thinking about the Eibach lift, but like you said in another comment, it tries to level it out which they shouldnt, most guys like me at least have a 60+ pound spare in the back plus other gear. Also I love how soft my stock suspension is, and Ive heard the eibachs are slightly stiffer

    Thanks! Yeah I can't do a lift if it's going to essentially lower the rear more. In this video I'm fully loaded. All my camping gear, full size spare, big stereo. I could definitely feel the sag in the rear. I was considering doing the Eibach springs and add ONLY the rear spacers. But then what do we do about the shocks? Hmmm...

    Hey Ben love the content . Only one on here that drives a Hybird like you stole it. You still liking it? Care to give an update on any issues and mileage? Thanks! I'm still loving it. I just passed 80k miles and no issues. I changed the transmission fluid and differential fluid but I probably didn't have to. I just did it as a precaution. Still running the original brakes. Still getting 40mpg. Still fun to drive. That's a lot of stills but it's my all around favorite car that I've owned. You won't be disappointed with the Hybrid.

    Thank you. I removed the exhaust tips because I scraped them a few times. Not bad, but enough to loosen them up. So I just tugged on them until they came off. One was barely on. I never liked fake exhaust tips anyway. I think the darker and smaller exhaust pipes are better. More stealth, less foo foo.

    Subbed. I have a 2022 RAV4 hybrid XLE with BFG AT tires and I live by the sand dunes... I had a 4x4 Yukon before this.. I realized they aren't the same but I didn't realize before buying that the awd isn't a true awd... What settings would you recommend in deeper soft sand driving? It seems to do ok airing down to 15 psi and using trail mode with traction control off... I also use manual 2nd gear unless I start losing traction then I'll shift back down to 1st... I'm wondering in your opinion what settings would be best for soft deeper sand? Wondering also about vsc off and traction control off vs just leaving them on.. ideally I want all 4 wheels to spin always if I'm on deep sand and I'm not sure how to accomplish this (or get as close as possible) with the hybrid. Any advice is appreciated

  • @benweber31

    @benweber31

    2 жыл бұрын

    You are correct. You want your wheels to SPIN in sand. Traction control off is a must. Airing down to 15 is perfect. Keep the revs up in "manual" mode. If you can turn off VSC with the "maintenance mode" that should help. I forget how to do it but it's the thing where you press the brake pedal and start button a certain sequence. I think just pressing the VSC button only disables it temporarily or partially. Keep in mind that you will be able to overheat in this mode, so I'm told. Get yourself an OBD2 wifi adapter so you can monitor all of the system temps in real time. It's cheap and easy. The problem is, when you start to turn in the sand, the VSC will kick in and start killing power or applying the brakes. You DON'T want this. Instant stuck. The problem we can't solve is the power split. The front wheels have access to over 220 hp and gobs of torque. The rear wheels get like 25% of that, and only temporarily. Once the inverter and battery heats up, the system goes into a gas engine only mode. Keep in mind that REVERSE ONLY USES electric motors. The gas engine will kick on to generate power only. You have MUCH LESS power going in reverse. If you are overheated, which doesn't take much in reverse, you will be stuck. I actually go in reverse INTO rough situations, so that if I get stuck, I can go forward in drive and use the gas engine.

    @@benweber31 thanks for all that. I've turned off vsc by pressing and holding the traction control button for 5 seconds then it will remind me (constantly) that vsc and traction are off on the dash, even if I clear the message. I've read about the pushing the petal method of entering maintenance mode, although I haven't tried it yet (haven't needed to). I read that if you damage your car, they can tell if you did it in maintenance mode and won't repair your vehicle under warranty. I also read that Toyota engineering confirmed that reverse is awd... I don't know if that's something new in 2022, but I'll have to test to see if under any circumstances the front wheels engage while reversing. I've gone out and intentionally got myself stuck just to see what I have to do to get out and trail mode, vsc and traction off and manual first gear while turning the front wheels left and right seem to eventually crawl out. I haven't got ballsy enough to take it in anything super deep, and I feel I probably shouldn't because of the limitations of the car... But I'd say it handles up to moderately soft sand pretty well with the above settings and some know how about driving in the sand.

    @@ParadiseEntertainmentCA AWD works in reverse. But it's only using MG2(front) and MGR(rear). There's no reverse gear in the system. This is true for all of hybrids like this. When you gun it in reverse and the gas engine revs up, it is using MG1 as the electricity generator. It sends electric power to the inverter/battery and powers MG2 and MGR. You can test this by going backwards up a steep hill like 30 degrees. Eventually you will have your foot to the floor and nothing is happening. Also, everything will heat up fast. I backed through some really deep snow doing this up a hill. The battery depleted immediately and the inverter/transmission got very hot. I've got a video showing this too if you are interested. kzread.info/dash/bejne/l2WGo5OjXdm4o8Y.html As far as the maintenance mode, I agree. Toyota could deny warranty work based on the logs. I personally have never done it.

It's super comfortable, tons of tech, super reliable, incredibly efficient, FAST AND FUN TO DRIVE and looks nice. I'm HAULING ASS up the Alcan highway. It's notoriously rough and dangerous. The "real tucks" can't keep up. They bounce all over the place and go slow in corners. The RAV4 can go quite fast as it has nice suspension for high speed rough roads. I have 500+ lbs of camping gear in the back and I can still pass 2 semi trucks at a time, no sweat. Someone please tell me of another vehicle that gets 35+ MPG, is super reliable, cheap to maintain, fun to drive, lots of power, comfortable and can do some soft roading.
